  • Rules and advice for logging?

    - by Nick Rosencrantz
    In my organization we've put together some rules / guildelines about logging that I would like to know if you can add to or comment. We use Java but you may comment in general about loggin - rules and advice Use the correct logging level ERROR: Something has gone very wrong and need fixing immediately WARNING: The process can continue without fixing. The application should tolerate this level but the warning should always get investigated. INFO: Information that an important process is finished DEBUG. Is only used during development Make sure that you know what you're logging. Avoid that the logging influences the behavior of the application The function of the logging should be to write messages in the log. Log messages should be descriptive, clear, short and concise. There is not much use of a nonsense message when troubleshooting. Put the right properties in log4j Put in that the right method and class is written automatically. Example: Datedfile -web log4j.rootLogger=ERROR, DATEDFILE log4j.logger.org.springframework=INFO log4j.logger.waffle=ERROR log4j.logger.se.prv=INFO log4j.logger.se.prv.common.mvc=INFO log4j.logger.se.prv.omklassning=DEBUG log4j.appender.DATEDFILE=biz.minaret.log4j.DatedFileAppender log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{HH:mm:ss,SSS} %-5p [%C{1}.%M] - %m%n log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.Prefix=omklassning. log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.Suffix=.log log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.Directory=//localhost/WebSphereLog/omklassning/ Log value. Please log values from the application. Log prefix. State which part of the application it is that the logging is written from, preferably with something for the project agreed prefix e.g. PANDORA_DB The amount of text. Be careful so that there is not too much logging text. It can influence the performance of the app. Loggning format: -There are several variants and methods to use with log4j but we would like a uniform use of the following format, when we log at exceptions: logger.error("PANDORA_DB2: Fel vid hämtning av frist i TP210_RAPPORTFRIST", e); In the example above it is assumed that we have set log4j properties so that it automatically write the class and the method. Always use logger and not the following: System.out.println(), System.err.println(), e.printStackTrace() If the web app uses our framework you can get very detailed error information from EJB, if using try-catch in the handler and logging according to the model above: In our project we use this conversion pattern with which method and class names are written out automatically . Here we use two different pattents for console and for datedfileappender: log4j.appender.CONSOLE.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{ABSOLUTE} %5p %c{1}:%L - %m%n log4j.appender.DATEDFILE.layout.ConversionPattern=%d [%t] %-5p %c - %m%n In both the examples above method and class wioll be written out. In the console row number will also be written our. toString() Please have a toString() for every object. EX: @Override public String toString() { StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.append(" DwfInformation [ "); sb.append("cc: ").append(cc); sb.append("pn: ").append(pn); sb.append("kc: ").append(kc); sb.append("numberOfPages: ").append(numberOfPages); sb.append("publicationDate: ").append(publicationDate); sb.append("version: ").append(version); sb.append(" ]"); return sb.toString(); } instead of special method which make these outputs public void printAll() { logger.info("inbet: " + getInbetInput()); logger.info("betdat: " + betdat); logger.info("betid: " + betid); logger.info("send: " + send); logger.info("appr: " + appr); logger.info("rereg: " + rereg); logger.info("NY: " + ny); logger.info("CNT: " + cnt); } So is there anything you can add, comment or find questionable with these ways of using the logging? Feel free to answer or comment even if it is not related to Java, Java and log4j is just an implementation of how this is reasoned.

  • Turning off hibernate logging console output

    I'm using hibernate 3 and want to stop it from dumping all the startup messages to the console. I tried commenting out the stdout lines in log4j.properties but no luck. I've pasted my log file below. Also I'm using eclipse with the standard project structure and have a copy of log4j.properties in both the root of the project folder and the bin folder. ### direct log messages to stdout ### #log4j.appender.stdout=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender #log4j.appender.stdout.Target=System.out #log4j.appender.stdout.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout #log4j.appender.stdout.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{ABSOLUTE} %5p %c{1}:%L - %m%n ### direct messages to file hibernate.log ### log4j.appender.file=org.apache.log4j.FileAppender log4j.appender.file.File=hibernate.log log4j.appender.file.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.file.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{ABSOLUTE} %5p %c{1}:%L - %m%n ### set log levels - for more verbose logging change 'info' to 'debug' ### log4j.rootLogger=warn, stdout #log4j.logger.org.hibernate=info log4j.logger.org.hibernate=debug ### log HQL query parser activity #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.hql.ast.AST=debug ### log just the SQL #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.SQL=debug ### log JDBC bind parameters ### log4j.logger.org.hibernate.type=info #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.type=debug ### log schema export/update ### log4j.logger.org.hibernate.tool.hbm2ddl=debug ### log HQL parse trees #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.hql=debug ### log cache activity ### #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.cache=debug ### log transaction activity #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.transaction=debug ### log JDBC resource acquisition #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.jdbc=debug ### enable the following line if you want to track down connection ### ### leakages when using DriverManagerConnectionProvider ### #log4j.logger.org.hibernate.connection.DriverManagerConnectionProvider=trac5

  • Perf4J Logging Config Help

    - by manyxcxi
    I currently have a long running process that I am trying to analyze with Perf4J. I currently have it writing results in CSV format to its own log file using the AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender and a StatisticsCsvLayout on the file appender. My question is; when I try and use the --graph option from the command line (using the perf4j jar) it isn't populating the data points- it isn't populating anything. Are my appenders set incorrectly? The log file contains hundreds (sometimes thousands) of data points of about 10 different tag names. <appender name="perfAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.FileAppender"> <param name="File" value="perfStats.log"/> <layout class="org.perf4j.log4j.StatisticsCsvLayout"> </layout> </appender> <appender name="CoalescingStatistics" class="org.perf4j.log4j.AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender"> <!-- The TimeSlice option is used to determine the time window for which all received StopWatch logs are aggregated to create a single GroupedTimingStatistics log. • log4j rootLogger seems to inherit log level of other logger. Why?

    - by AndrewR
    I've got a log4J setup in which the root logger is supposed to log ERROR level messages and above to the console and another logger logs everything to syslog. log4j.properties is: # Root logger option log4j.rootLogger=ERROR,R log4j.appender.R=org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender log4j.appender.R.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.R.layout.ConversionPattern=%d %p %t %c - %m%n log4j.logger.SGSearch=DEBUG,SGSearch log4j.appender.SGSearch=org.apache.log4j.net.SyslogAppender log4j.appender.SGSearch.SyslogHost=localhost log4j.appender.SGSearch.Facility=LOCAL6 log4j.appender.SGSearch.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.SGSearch.layout.ConversionPattern=[%-5p] %m%n In code I do private static final Logger logger = Logger.getLogger("SGSearch"); . . . logger.info("Commencing snapshot index [" + args[1] + " -> " + args[2] + "]"); What is happening is that I get the console logging for all logging levels. What seems to be happening is that the level for SGSearch overrides the level set for the root logger somehow. I can't figure it out. I have confirmed that Log4J is reading then properties file I think it is, and no other (via the -Dlog4j.debug option)

  • Perf4j Not Logging Correctly

    - by Jehud
    I setup some stop watch calls in my code to measure some code blocks and all the messages are going into my primary log and not into the timing log. The perfStats.log file gets created just fine but all the messages go to the root log which I didn't think was supposed to happen according to the docs I've read. Is there something obvious I'm missing here? perf4j tutorial link: http://perf4j.codehaus.org/devguide.html#Using_the_log4j_Appenders_to_Generate_Real-Time_Performance_Information Example code import org.apache.log4j.Logger; import org.perf4j.LoggingStopWatch; import org.perf4j.StopWatch; public class PerfLogger { /** * @param args */ public static void main(String[] args) { Logger logger = Logger.getLogger(PerfLogger.class.getName()); logger.info("Starting perf log test"); StopWatch stopWatch = new LoggingStopWatch("test time"); try { Thread.sleep(1000); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } stopWatch.stop(); } } Example log4j.xml <log4j:configuration xmlns:log4j='http://jakarta.apache.org/log4j/'> <appender name="STDOUT-DEBUG" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender"> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d %-5p [%t]%x %M (%F:%L) - %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <!-- Perf4J appenders --> <!-- This AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender groups StopWatch log messages into GroupedTimingStatistics messages which it sends on the file appender defined below --> <appender name="CoalescingStatistics" class="org.perf4j.log4j.AsyncCoalescingStatisticsAppender"> <!-- The TimeSlice option is used to determine the time window for which all received StopWatch logs are aggregated to create a single GroupedTimingStatistics log. • Class decorator to declare static member (e.g., for log4net)?

    - by Ken
    I'm using log4net, and we have a lot of this in our code: public class Foo { private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(typeof(Foo)); .... } One downside is that it means we're pasting this 10-word section all over, and every now and then somebody forgets to change the class name. The log4net FAQ also mentions this alternative possibility, which is even more verbose: public class Foo { private static readonly ILog log = LogManager.GetLogger(System.Reflection.MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); ... } Is it possible to write a decorator to define this? I'd really like to say simply: [LogMe] // or perhaps: [LogMe("log")] public class Foo { ... } I've done similar things in other languages, but never a statically-compiled language like C#. Can I define class members from a decorator?

  • Environment variable does not get read?

    - by sanjeev40084
    I have a console application in Visual studio. i have log4net stuff with smtp appender in my app.config file. I have set environment variable in my code (i.e. my email address) and trying to reference this environment variable to send email. However log4net doesn't seem to read this value when the application is run. My log4net: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?> <Configuration> <configSections> <section name="log4net" type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler, log4net" /> </configSections> <log4net> <appender name="smtp" type="log4net.Appender.SmtpAppender"> <param name="to" value="${EmailAddress}" /> <param name="from" value="[email protected]" /> <param name="subject" value="testing app" /> <param name="smtpHost" value="<smtp host name>" /> <param name="bufferSize" value="1" /> <param name="lossy" value="false" /> <param name="Threshold" value="ERROR"/> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%d{ISO8601} [%t] [%-5p] %c - %m%n" /> </layout> </appender> <!-- Setup the root category, add the appenders and set the default priority --> <root> <priority value="ALL" /> <appender-ref ref="smtp" /> </root> </log4net> </Configuration> In my console app, i have set environment variable something like this: Environment.SetEnvironmentVariable("EmailAddress", "[email protected]", EnvironmentVariableTarget.Process); Does anyone know how can i make it work? Thanks.

  • Logging a specific package in log4j programmatically

    - by VinTem
    Hi there, here is the thing, I have to deploy a web app and the the log4j.properties file is created by the client so I dont have control over it. Their properties file is like this: log4j.rootCategory= FILE !-----------FILE--------------! log4j.category.FILE=DEBUG log4j.appender.FILE=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.FILE.File=${catalina.base}/logs/rcweb.log log4j.appender.FILE.MaxFileSize=1024KB log4j.appender.FILE.MaxBackupIndex=10 log4j.appender.FILE.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.FILE.layout.ConversionPattern=%-2d{dd/MM/yyyy HH:mm:ss} [%t] %5p %c:%L - %m%n And in my classes I do something like this: private static final Logger LOG = Logger.getLogger(MaterialController.class); LOG.info("my log"); But the log file has never been created. I did the test and changed the log4j.properties file and deployed in my computer adding the following line: log4j.logger.br.com.golive.requisicaoCompras=DEBUG This works, but I cant use the file like this. Is there any ideas? Thanks

  • Logback: What would cause DEBUG - WARN to append to file but NOT ERROR?

    - by Zombies
    I am running a Java program from Eclipe, and I am using the logback console plugin. I can see the ERROR level statements being appended to console (as well as all of the others). But for some reason my file, which is correctly recieving new DEBUG-WARN statements, is NOT recieving the ERROR level ones. Here is my logback.xml: <consolePlugin /> <appender name="FILE" class="ch.qos.logback.core.FileAppender"> <file>logs/main.log</file> <layout class="ch.qos.logback.classic.PatternLayout"> <Pattern>%date %level [%thread] %logger{10} [%file:%line] %msg%n</Pattern> </layout> </appender> <appender name="STDOUT" class="ch.qos.logback.core.ConsoleAppender"> <layout class="ch.qos.logback.classic.PatternLayout"> <Pattern>%msg%n</Pattern> </layout> </appender> <logger name="WebsiteChecker"> <appender-ref ref="FILE" /> </logger> <root> <level value="debug" /> <!--<appender-ref ref="STDOUT" />--> <appender-ref ref="FILE" /> </root> </configuration>

  • log4j.xml configuration with <rollingPolicy> and <triggeringPolicy>

    - by Mike Smith
    I try to configure log4j.xml in such a way that file will be rolled upon file size, and the rolled file's name will be i.e: "C:/temp/test/test_log4j-%d{yyyy-MM-dd-HH_mm_ss}.log" I followed this discussion: http://web.archiveorange.com/archive/v/NUYyjJipzkDOS3reRiMz Finally it worked for me only when I add: try { Thread.sleep(1); } catch (InterruptedException e) { e.printStackTrace(); } to the method: public boolean isTriggeringEvent(Appender appender, LoggingEvent event, String filename, long fileLength) which make it works. The question is if there is a better way to make it work? since this method call many times and slow my program. • Log4j: Issues about the FallbackErrorHandler

    - by rdogpink
    I am working on a client-server-application and wanted to implement a flexible Loggingframework, so I chose log4j, which doesn´t really evolve anymore, but it is still handy framework. Because the Logging happens along the network, i wanted a solution for the case, that the network drive isn´t available, so the Logger has to change its destination file(s). Now I wanted to use the FallbackErrorHandler (configured with a XML-File) from the Log4j-library and the implementation worked: When my network drive isn´t available, it switches to a local Logfile, so no logging should be lost. But I headded two problems since yesterday and couldn´t figure or find out, how to solve it. No return to initial Logging Configuration: When the network drive is on again and the Logger could write to the old destinations, log4j still logs at the local drive and I can´t figure out, how to notify the original (primary) Logger to start again. I also tried to attach a second Appender to the ErrorHandler, which should mirror the failed primary Logger, that it tries to write on the network destination and when the network is on again, it logs in both files, on the local and on the network drive. But unfortunately it didn´t work out, I only got a failure message that the ErrorHandler-content doesn´t fit. log4j:WARN The content of element type "errorHandler" must match "(param*,root-ref?,logger-ref*,appender-ref?)". This is the responsible code. <appender name="TraceAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.DailyRollingFileAppender"> <!-- The second appender-ref "TestAppender" leads to the error. --> <errorHandler class="org.apache.log4j.varia.FallbackErrorHandler"> <logger-ref ref="com.idoh"/> <appender-ref ref="TraceFallbackAppender"/> <appender-ref ref="TestAppender"/> </errorHandler> <param name="datePattern" value=".yyyy-MM-dd" /> <param name="file" value="logs/Trace.txt" /> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%-6r %d{HH:mm:ss,SSS} [%t] %-5p - %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> So, how could I trigger log4j to reset to initial configuration or hold a second appender parallel to the "Local-Logger". My Application should work by itself and shouldn´t have to be restarted often. First Error message is swallowed: I recognized, that the first message, which leads to the switching between the primary logger and the FallbackErrorHandler (for example a logging-request to a readonly-File), is swallowed, so neither the primary logger logs it (because it can´t) nor the backup-Logger knows what it missed. So anybody else ran in this problem and could solve it? Or has any suggestions?

  • .Net Logger (Write your own vs log4net/enterprise logger/nlog etc.)

    - by Jack
    I work for an IT department with about 50+ developers. It used to be about 100+ developers but was cut because of the recession. When our department was bigger there was an ambitious effort made to set up a special architecture group. One thing this group decided to do was create our own internal logger. They thought it was such a simple task that we could spend recources and do it ourselves. Now we are having issues with performance and difficulty viewing the logs generated and some employees are frustrated that we are spending recources on infrastructure stuff like this instead of focusing on serving our business and using stuff that already exists like log4net or Enterprise Logger. Can you assist me in listing up reasons why you should not create your own .net logger. Also reasons for why you should are welcome to get a fair point of view :)

    To be honest I have not been very interested in the caching before I’m going to a project which would be using the multi-site deployment and high connection and concurrency and very sensitive to the user experience. That means we must cache the output data for better performance. After looked for the Internet I finally focused on the Memcached. What’s the Memcached? I think the description on its main site gives us a very good and simple explanation. Free & open source, high-performance, distributed memory object caching system, generic in nature, but intended for use in speeding up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. Memcached is an in-memory key-value store for small chunks of arbitrary data (strings, objects) from results of database calls, API calls, or page rendering. Memcached is simple yet powerful. Its simple design promotes quick deployment, ease of development, and solves many problems facing large data caches. Its API is available for most popular languages. The original Memcached was built on *nix system are is being widely used in the PHP world. Although it’s not a problem to use the Memcached installed on *nix system there are some windows version available fortunately. Since we are WISC (Windows – IIS – SQL Server – C#, which on the opposite of LAMP) it would be much easier for us to use the Memcached on Windows rather than *nix. I’m using the Memcached Win X64 version provided by NorthScale. There are also the x86 version and other operation system version.   Install Memcached Unpack the Memcached file to a folder on the machine you want it to be installed, we can see that there are only 3 files and the main file should be the “memcached.exe”. Memcached would be run on the server as a service. To install the service just open a command windows and navigate to the folder which contains the “memcached.exe”, let’s say “C:\Memcached\”, and then type “memcached.exe -d install”. If you are using Windows Vista and Windows 7 system please be execute the command through the administrator role. Right-click the command item in the start menu and use “Run as Administrator”, otherwise the Memcached would not be able to be installed successfully. Once installed successful we can type “memcached.exe -d start” to launch the service. Now it’s ready to be used. The default port of Memcached is 11211 but you can change it through the command argument. You can find the help by typing “memcached -h”.   Using Memcached Memcahed has many good and ready-to-use providers for vary program language. After compared and reviewed I chose the Memcached Providers. It’s built based on another 3rd party Memcached client named enyim.com Memcached Client. The Memcached Providers is very simple to set/get the cached objects through the Memcached servers and easy to be configured through the application configuration file (aka web.config and app.config). Let’s create a console application for the demonstration and add the 3 DLL files from the package of the Memcached Providers to the project reference. Then we need to add the configuration for the Memcached server. Create an App.config file and firstly add the section on top of it. Here we need three sections: the section for Memcached Providers, for enyim.com Memcached client and the log4net. 1: <configSections> 2: <section name="cacheProvider" 3: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.CacheProviderSection, MemcachedProviders" 4: allowDefinition="MachineToApplication" 5: restartOnExternalChanges="true"/> 6: <sectionGroup name="enyim.com"> 7: <section name="memcached" 8: type="Enyim.Caching.Configuration.MemcachedClientSection, Enyim.Caching"/> 9: </sectionGroup> 10: <section name="log4net" 11: type="log4net.Config.Log4NetConfigurationSectionHandler,log4net"/> 12: </configSections> Then we will add the configuration for 3 of them in the App.config file. The Memcached server information would be defined under the enyim.com section since it will be responsible for connect to the Memcached server. Assuming I installed the Memcached on two servers with the default port, the configuration would be like this. 1: <enyim.com> 2: <memcached> 3: <servers> 4: <!-- put your own server(s) here--> 5: <add address="192.168.0.149" port="11211"/> 6: <add address="10.10.20.67" port="11211"/> 7: </servers> 8: <socketPool minPoolSize="10" maxPoolSize="100" connectionTimeout="00:00:10" deadTimeout="00:02:00"/> 9: </memcached> 10: </enyim.com> Memcached supports the multi-deployment which means you can install the Memcached on the servers as many as you need. The protocol of the Memcached responsible for routing the cached objects into the proper server. So it’s very easy to scale-out your system by Memcached. And then define the Memcached Providers configuration. The defaultExpireTime indicates how long the objected cached in the Memcached would be expired, the default value is 2000 ms. 1: <cacheProvider defaultProvider="MemcachedCacheProvider"> 2: <providers> 3: <add name="MemcachedCacheProvider" 4: type="MemcachedProviders.Cache.MemcachedCacheProvider, MemcachedProviders" 5: keySuffix="_MySuffix_" 6: defaultExpireTime="2000"/> 7: </providers> 8: </cacheProvider> The last configuration would be the log4net. 1: <log4net> 2: <!-- Define some output appenders --> 3: <appender name="ConsoleAppender" type="log4net.Appender.ConsoleAppender"> 4: <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> 5: <conversionPattern value="%date [%thread] %-5level %logger [%property{NDC}] - %message%newline"/> 6: </layout> 7: </appender> 8: <!--<threshold value="OFF" />--> 9: <!-- Setup the root category, add the appenders and set the default priority --> 10: <root> 11: <priority value="WARN"/> 12: <appender-ref ref="ConsoleAppender"> 13: <filter type="log4net.Filter.LevelRangeFilter"> 14: <levelMin value="WARN"/> 15: <levelMax value="FATAL"/> 16: </filter> 17: </appender-ref> 18: </root> 19: </log4net>   Get, Set and Remove the Cached Objects Once we finished the configuration it would be very simple to consume the Memcached servers. The Memcached Providers gives us a static class named DistCache that can be used to operate the Memcached servers. Get<T>: Retrieve the cached object from the Memcached servers. If failed it will return null or the default value. Add: Add an object with a unique key into the Memcached servers. Assuming that we have an operation that retrieve the email from the name which is time consuming. This is the operation that should be cached. The method would be like this. I utilized Thread.Sleep to simulate the long-time operation. 1: static string GetEmailByNameSlowly(string name) 2: { 3: Thread.Sleep(2000); 4: return name + "@ethos.com.cn"; 5: } Then in the real retrieving method we will firstly check whether the name, email information had been searched previously and cached. If yes we will just return them from the Memcached, otherwise we will invoke the slowly method to retrieve it and then cached. 1: static string GetEmailByName(string name) 2: { 3: var email = DistCache.Get<string>(name); 4: if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(email)) 5: { 6: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email not be in memcached so need slow loading. (name = {0})==>", name); 7: email = GetEmailByNameSlowly(name); 8: DistCache.Add(name, email); 9: } 10: else 11: { 12: Console.WriteLine("==> The name/email had been in memcached. (name = {0})==>", name); 13: } 14: return email; 15: } Finally let’s finished the calling method and execute. 1: static void Main(string[] args) 2: { 3: var name = string.Empty; 4: while (name != "q") 5: { 6: Console.Write("==> Please enter the name to find the email: "); 7: name = Console.ReadLine(); 8:  9: var email = GetEmailByName(name); 10: Console.WriteLine("==> The email of {0} is {1}.", name, email); 11: } 12: } The first time I entered “ziyanxu” it takes about 2 seconds to get the email since there’s nothing cached. But the next time I entered “ziyanxu” it returned very quickly from the Memcached.   Summary In this post I explained a bit on why we need cache, what’s Memcached and how to use it through the C# application. The example is fairly simple but hopefully demonstrated on how to use it. Memcached is very easy and simple to be used since it gives you the full opportunity to consider what, when and how to cache the objects. And when using Memcached you don’t need to consider the cache servers. The Memcached would be like a huge object pool in front of you. The next step I’m thinking now are: What kind of data should be cached? And how to determined the key? How to implement the cache as a layer on top of the business layer so that the application will not notice that the cache is there. How to implement the cache by AOP so that the business logic no need to consider the cache. I will investigate on them in the future and will share my thoughts and results.   Hope this helps, Shaun All documents and related graphics, codes are provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. • OAuthWebSecurity.VerifyAuthentication IsSuccessful returns false how do I to determine the reason?

    - by Eonasdan
    I'm using DotNetOpenAuth with a MVC 4 application. All the sudden Google auth is failing (MS is working). The stock code does this: [AllowAnonymous] public ActionResult ExternalLoginCallback(string returnUrl) { var result = OAuthWebSecurity.VerifyAuthentication(Url.Action("ExternalLoginCallback", new { ReturnUrl = returnUrl })); if (!result.IsSuccessful) { return RedirectToAction("ExternalLoginFailure"); } I know that result.IsSuccessful is false, but how do I get the reason? result.Error is null. I also looked at this page to use log4net. I do get a log on the local dev box but not when I deploy it to a remote server. log4net webconfig: <log4net> <appender name="RollingFileAppender" type="log4net.Appender.RollingFileAppender"> <file value="RelyingParty.log" /> <appendToFile value="true" /> <rollingStyle value="Size" /> <maxSizeRollBackups value="10" /> <maximumFileSize value="100KB" /> <staticLogFileName value="true" /> <layout type="log4net.Layout.PatternLayout"> <conversionPattern value="%date (GMT%date{%z}) [%thread] %-5level %logger - %message%newline" /> </layout> </appender> <!-- Setup the root category, add the appenders and set the default level --> <root> <level value="INFO" /> <appender-ref ref="RollingFileAppender" /> </root> <!-- Specify the level for some specific categories --> <logger name="DotNetOpenAuth"> <level value="ALL" /> </logger> </log4net> Edit I also tried log4net to a sql db but it still didn't log anything

    Hello everyone, I'm creating additional module to already multi-module maven project. And for this one I want everything to be like in other modules(meaning dependencies) just to test hello world, then I'll go do some more complex stuff. And it does print hello world as it should when deployed onto jboss server, but I get some strange error on console, had anyone had similar experience? and how can I fix it? Here it is : 15:48:35,789 ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR A "org.jboss.logging.appender.FileAppender" object is not assignable to a "org.apache.log4j.Appender" variable. 15:48:35,789 ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR The class "org.apache.log4j.Appender" was loaded by 15:48:35,790 ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR [BaseClassLoader@9a8d9b{vfszip:/C:/jboss-5.1.0.GA/server/default/deploy/new-module-0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.war/}] whereas object of type 15:48:35,790 ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR "org.jboss.logging.appender.FileAppender" was loaded by [org.jboss.bootstrap.NoAnnotationURLClassLoader@506411]. 15:48:35,790 ERROR [STDERR] log4j:ERROR Could not instantiate appender named "FILE".

  • How do I make my Log::Log4perl logger work?

    - by Geo
    Here's the code I have: use strict; use warnings; use Log::Log4perl qw(:easy); Log::Log4perl->init({ level => $DEBUG }); my $logger = Log::Log4perl->get_logger("my.logger"); my $appender = Log::Log4perl::Appender->new("Log::Log4perl::Appender::File",filename => "my.file"); $appender->layout(Log::Log4perl::Layout::SimpleLayout->new); $logger->add_appender($appender); $logger->info("this is an info"); all I want to do is log a message to a file, and have the level show up. I understood that is what the SimpleLayout is for . I'd like to do this without a configuration file. Running the code above shows the following message: Log::Log4perl configuration looks suspicious: No loggers defined

  • log4j relative file path

    - by Bob
    Hi, I'd like my web app to log into files with this path: webapp/logs/ I can set the absolute path in the log4j.properties file, but the production environment's directory structure will be different. Is there any way I could do it? Here is how I do: log4j.appender.f=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.f.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.f.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{ABSOLUTE} %5p %c{1}:%L - %m%n log4j.appender.f.File=log.out log4j.appender.f.MaxFileSize=100KB This is printing logs into a file named log.log in my eclipse directory (c://eclipse). I'm using Tomcat 6.

  • Jboss logging issue

    - by balaji
    Our application is deployed on JBoss As 4.0x and we face some issues with JBoss logging. Whenever the server is restarted, JBoss stops logging, and there is no update in server.log. After that it is not updating the log file. Then we do touch cmd on log4j.xml, so that it creates the log files again. Please help me in fixing the issue we cant do touch everytime. We face this issue in both the nodes. I could not figure where the problem is? If any other issues, we can check the log files. If log itself is not getting updated/logged, how can we move further in analyzing the issues without the recent/updated logs? Contents of log4j.xml, copied from the comments below: <appender name="FILE" class="org.jboss.logging.appender.DailyRollingFileAppender"> <errorHandler class="org.jboss.logging.util.OnlyOnceErrorHandler"/> <param name="File" value="${jboss.server.log.dir}/server.log"/> <param name="Append" value="false"/> <param name="DatePattern" value="'.'yyyy-MM-dd"/> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d %-5p [%c] %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <appender name="CONSOLE" class="org.apache.log4j.ConsoleAppender"> <errorHandler class="org.jboss.logging.util.OnlyOnceErrorHandler"/> <param name="Target" value="System.out"/> <param name="Threshold" value="INFO"/> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <!-- The default pattern: Date Priority [Category] Message\n --> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%d{ABSOLUTE} %-5p [%c{1}] %m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <root> <appender-ref ref="CONSOLE"/> <appender-ref ref="FILE"/> </root> <category name="org.apache"> <priority value="INFO"/> </category> <category name="org.apache.axis"> <priority value="INFO"/> </category> <category name="org.jgroups"> <priority value="WARN"/> </category> <category name="jacorb"> <priority value="WARN"/> </category> <category name="org.jboss.management"> <priority value="INFO"/> </category>

Thanks !

  • Perf4j Not Logging to Separate File

Example log4j.xml <!-- This file appender is used to output aggregated performance statistics --> <appender name="fileAppender" class="org.apache.log4j.FileAppender"> <param name="File" value="perfStats.log"/> <layout class="org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout"> <param name="ConversionPattern" value="%m%n"/> </layout> </appender> <!-- Loggers --> <!-- The Perf4J logger. Note that org.perf4j.TimingLogger is the value of the org.perf4j.StopWatch.DEFAULT_LOGGER_NAME constant. Also, note that additivity is set to false, which is usually what is desired - this means that timing statements will only be sent to this logger and NOT to upstream loggers. --> <logger name="org.perf4j.TimingLogger" additivity="false"> <level value="INFO"/> <appender-ref ref="CoalescingStatistics"/> </logger> <root> <priority value="info"/> <appender-ref ref="STDOUT-DEBUG"/> </root>
