  • Connecting FreeNAS 8 to Mac OS X Lion LDAP Server

    - by Absolution
I currently have Mac OS X Lion Server running from a MacMini and want to use it purely as an LDAP server for authentication for FreeNAS 8. I have FreeNAS setup and running on a VM, all features working correctly and as expected however I cannot connect to my LDAP server (MacMini). Error message; **Nss_ldap: could not search LDAP server – server is unavailable** For LDAP service settings in FreeNAS, I know my Hostname and Base DN are correct (exact copies of what I set originally and ones that are shown in server:open directory overview) however I am unsure what to enter for Root bind DN, password and Suffix’s. I have researched into where I can find these out and other than following the FreeNAS examples it appears there is a way to find out within the Server Workgroup Manager specific to my settings – however this function is unavailable to me and cannot be ‘ticked’ to view for some strange reason. Some forums explain how Root bind DN should be uid=admin, dc=… and others cn=admin, dc=… – I’m rather confused and would appreciate your help or advice with this.

  • MacOS X 10.6 Portable Home Directory sync fails due to FileSync agent crashing

    - by tegbains
On one of our cleanly installed MacPro machines running MacOS X 10.6.6 connected to our MacOS X 10.6.6 Server, syncing data using Portable Home Directories fails. It seems to be due to the filesync agent crashing during the home sync. We get -41 and -8026 errors, which we are suspecting are indicating that there is too much data or filesync agent can't read the files. The user is the owner of the files and can read/write to all of the files. < Logout 0:: [11/02/04 13:10:42.751] Error -41 copying /Volumes/RCAUsers/earlpeng/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/email from old imac./Attachments/12081/2.2. • Using OSX home directories from linux

    - by Steffen
I'm running an OSX (Snow Leopard) Server with OpenDirectory, which is nothing else than a modified OpenLDAP with some Apple-specific schemas. However, I want to reuse this directory on some of my Linux (Debian Squeeze) boxes. It's no problem to authenticate against OSXs LDAP Server, this works fine already. What I struggle with is the way the home folders are specified in OSX. If I query the passwd config on one of my linux machines, the OSX imported entries are looking like this myaccount:x:1034:1026:Firstname Lastname:/Network/Servers/hostname.example.com/Volumes/MyShare/Users/myaccount:/bin/bash While those network home folders might be fine for OSX-Clients, I don't want those server based paths on my linux machines. I saw that there is an NFSHomeDirectory Attribute in the OSX User inspector, but if I change this the whole user home path gets changed. Since my users should be able to login on both systems, OSX and Linux, this is not what I want. Does anyone have an idea how I must configure OSX to make my linux machines use home folders like /net/myaccount and leave the configuration for OSX clients untouched?

  • Microsoft Office "Read-only" warning not appearing on Samba shares on Mac OS X Server

    - by bongo
Hi, some of my users don't get the "read-only" warning (but "read-only" does appear on the title bar and the document is indeed opened read-only) when opening Office 2007 documents already opened by another user. We run the samba share off an XSan volume under Mac OS X 10.5.8 Server. Strict locking is on but oplocks are off (from Server Admin). At home, with a simple samba share in 10.6.3 server, it works correctly. Any ideas? or is this a 10.5.8 behavior?

  • Disk space mismatch on OS X Server (Leopard)

    - by John Gardeniers
My Nagios system sent me an alert to inform me that the disk space on one of the drives on our OS X server is very low. When I run df /Volumes/Apps/ I get /dev/disk0s3 117209520 114932472 2277048 99% /Volumes/Apps When I run du -c /Volumes/Apps it reports 11489944 total Why might there be such a vast difference? Even more importantly, how do I find the problem and what can I do about it? I'm essentially just a Windows admin, so am well out of my comfort zone here. I use a Mac but I'm not a Mac admin in any real sense of the word.

  • How to set global PATH on OS X Server 10.6.6?

    - by Adam Lindberg
I'm running Tomcat on OS X Server 10.6.6 under the normal Web component that comes with the OS. This has worked fine so far, but I need to add some entries to the $PATH environment variable for programs that I want access to from the web server (more specifically, I'm running Hudson under Tomcat which needs access to build tools that I have installed). Tomcat and the Web component seems to run under the user _appserver which has a different $PATH than the administrator account. What's the proper way to add a global entry to the $PATH in OS X Server for the Web component? Preferable it should be done only once so that both the _appserver and Administrator user can access the same $PATH. EDIT: Adding the path to /etc/paths or /etc/paths.d/somefile didn't work. Tomcat and Hudson does still not see those directories.

  • Mac Server bizzare routing table

    - by The Unix Janitor
My mac routing table usually is very simple. I know it's based on bsd , but what's it doing or trying to do. My routing table is usually very simple however, the second one, default was point to link5 ? Is this normal, or is this IPV6 craziness at work? • Dovecot (on Mac OS X Server 3 - Mavericks) giving “Error: Failed to autocreate mailbox INBOX: Permission denied”

    - by user2965240
I recently upgraded my server to Mavericks and I thought everything had gone perfectly. As it turns out, that was not exactly the case. After everything working fine for a week or so, I created a new user and my mail server flat out stopped working. Most frustratingly, there were no log errors (in any of the many mail logs) which shed any light on the cause. After much trial and error, I finally got my mail server functioning (partially) by reinstalling server and restoring the mail folder from the previous day's backup (yay for backups). However, as is often the case, there were MANY permission issues. After slogging through various permission problems, I believe that my system is now receiving mail, however none of my users can check it because every time someone attempts to login the server generates following error: Error: Failed to autocreate mailbox INBOX: Permission denied I would assume that this is yet another permissions problem, however after much searching, I still cannot resolve this. To be clear, I don't want Dovecot to autocreate any mailboxes at this point because all of the mailboxes should exist. Any help on this would be sooooooo greatly appreciated. P.S. On a side note: why is it that repairing permissions never takes care of difficult issues like these? That would be awfully helpful...

  • 10.6.4 Apple Wiki: New just created users can do nothing?

Hello, After update to 10.6.4 there's an issue: any new users that I create in Server Prefs/WGM can't post to their blogs, comment, create wiki pages... They can't do anything! There's log from Wiki errors (when user DURAK tries to create new blog entry): [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] Traceback (most recent call last): [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/caldavd/lib/python/twisted/web/server.py", line 126, in process self.render(resrc) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/caldavd/lib/python/twisted/web/server.py", line 133, in render body = resrc.render(self) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_xmlrpc_server/WebAppServer.py", line 90, in render d = defer.maybeDeferred(function, *args) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/caldavd/lib/python/twisted/internet/defer.py", line 104, in maybeDeferred result = f(*args, **kw) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] --- <exception caught here> --- [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_xmlrpc_server/ContentServiceBase.py", line 121, in xmlrpc_addEntry aPage = ContentEntry.newBundleBasedContentEntry (path = path, content = content, author = author, title = title, uid = uid, type = kind, versioned = self.versioned, templateName = template) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_wlt/ContentEntry.py", line 794, in newBundleBasedContentEntry aPage.save('First created', 'created') [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_wlt/ContentEntry.py", line 445, in save revisions.addRevision(self.serializeEntry(revisionAttributes), inComment = comment, inAuthor = updateAuthor, inChangeType = editType) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_utilities/sqlitersion.py", line 36, in _func result = f(self, *args, **kwargs) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/usr/share/wikid/lib/python/apple_utilities/sqlitersion.py", line 49, in addRevision contentPlistStr = plistlib.writePlistToString(inContentDict).decode("utf-8") [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 110, in writePlistToString [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 94, in writePlist [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 251, in writeValue [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 280, in writeDict [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 238, in writeValue [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 171, in simpleElement [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] File "/S-m/Lib-ry/Fr-ks/Python.fr-k/Ver-s/2.6/lib/pyth-2.6/plistlib.py", line 221, in _escapeAndEncode [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] exceptions.UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0xd0 in position 0: ordinal not in range(128) [HTTPChannel,5,127.0.0.1] 'Unparseable html in page, removing whatever was already written.' • How to resolve `bootpd` crashing constantly on Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard Server?

    - by morgant
I've got a Mac Pro running Mac OS X 10.6.4 Snow Leopard Server and it's recently started getting numerous 'kNetworkError's in Server Admin.app when viewing services. It's acting as a gateway w/NAT and has been so for quite some time. There is one glaring issue, bootpd crashes all the time with the following errors in `/var/log/system.log/: Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: server starting Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: server name servername.domain.tld Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: interface en0: ip 10.0.1.9 mask 255.255.255.0 Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: bsdpd: re-reading configuration Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: bsdpd: shadow file size will be set to 48 megabytes Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: bsdpd: age time 00:15:00 Aug 12 16:54:59 servername bootpd[3572]: [3572] detected buffer overflow Aug 12 16:54:59 servername com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.bootpd[3572]): Job appears to have crashed: Abort trap Aug 12 16:54:59 servername com.apple.ReportCrash.Root[3571]: 2010-08-12 16:54:59.828 ReportCrash[3571:2807] Saved crash report for bootpd[3572] version ??? • Point example.com to webserver in DNS record

    - by ggstevens
I have a Mac Mini Server (named Server) with the following DNS setup Primary Zone: example.com mysql-host.example.com machine (10.0.0.101) server.example.com machine (10.0.0.100) server.example.com nameserver (10.0.0.100) www.example.com machine (10.0.0.102) www.example.com is a linux box with Apache. How do I get both example.com and www.example.com to work. Right now, I can view my website with www.example.com only. I know there's nothing that points example.com to the IP, but when I create a machine record without a hostname I get an error (This machine record cannot be created without a host name.).

  • Is there a way to customise PPD distribution of printer drivers effectively with Mac Os X server?

    - by glenstorey
Hi, we have two network printers shared via our 10.5.8 Mac Os Server machine. They have drivers provided by the manufacturer that allow job logging (printing with a print code). I've installed said drivers on the server, but when we distribute the printer on our Mac Os clients (using add printer via bonjour) it deploys older drivers that don't support Job Logging. Is there a way to update the store of print drivers (cups drivers?) on the server so it distributes the updated drivers, rather than the older one?

  • Route an IP from WAN to a host on LAN on OpenWRT

    - by Zsub
EDIT: I know how to use NAT, I specifically want the server to be reachable on two IP's, one private, one public, with the firewall of the OpenWRT in between, if feasible. At the office we have recieved a /29 from our ISP. The first address is reserved for their endpoint, so I'm free to use five addresses. We run a local network, so of course there is a router in between running OpenWRT to provide all hosts with (W)LAN (dhcp from a private range). However, we also have a server running OS X Server 10.6 (Snow Leopard) and I'd like that server to be accessible both from the LAN using a private IP as well as from the WAN on it's own public IP. Point of note is that the server only has one network port, so multiple NICs is not an option, unfortunately. How would I go about doing this?

  • New Mac OS X Server setup, when i send mail to gmail it goes straight to Spam. Why is that?

    - by basilmir
New Mac OS X Server setup, when i send mail to gmail it goes straight to Spam. Why is that? My setup: DNS - done (A records PTR are ok) Mail Setup - done Webmail - done Also there seems to be a naming problem. They all come from [email protected] instead of [email protected]. I must be missing an alias somewhere. I've read an entire book on setting this up so don't throw stones :) The GUI is masking a lot of this up for me, so explanations via GUI is appreciated.

  • Mac OS X Server mobile account VS Time Machine Network Backup

    - by elhombre
I am installing a Server @home to manage the mac client's of my family. First I wanted to make time machine Backups over the internal network to an external Hard-drive which is connected to my Mac OS X Server (10.6) but when I read about the mobile accounts and it's synchronization features I got a little bit irritated what the differences between the two Services are. So where are the differences between a mobile account and a Time Machine Backup which is made over the network? Can the synchronized mobile Account be backup to an external Harddisk, if yes, how?

  • hosts.deny ignored by MacOSX 10.8

    - by David Holm
I have been trying to set up my MacOS X Server, which I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, to use denyhosts as I need to open port 22 to it. denyhosts is set up and adds entries to /etc/hosts.deny so I decided to add my laptops IP to it in order to verify that it actually works but I can still log in and my IP shows up in /private/var/log/system.log. I even rebooted the server once just to be sure there wasn't some service that had to be restarted. I tried the following entries: ALL: <my laptop's IP> sshd: <my laptop's IP> sshd: 127.0.0.1 My /etc/sshd_config has the following parameters set: UsePAM yes UseDNS no I Googled if deny.hosts has been deprecated in OSX 10.7 or 10.8 but I couldn't find any indications that it has. Any ideas of what is going wrong or if there is an alternative way to achieve the same result? Yes, a private key would solve this problem but for the time being I would like to stick to using password authentication. I also like the idea of denyhosts actually blocking access to all services running on the server and not just ssh.

  • Mailman bounces go to me, do not unsubscribe user! (MacOS Server)

    - by vy32
I run a large mailing list (30,000 users). Every month I get a whole slew of bounces in my mailbox from the "mailing list memberships reminder" that get sent out. I thought that these were supposed to go to the program and automatically unsubscribe people, not go to me. We are running a standard unmodified MacOS Server installation. Here is a typical bounce: From: Mail Delivery System Subject: Undelivered Mail Returned to Sender To: [email protected] This is the mail system at host mail.COMPANY.COM. I'm sorry to have to inform you that your message could not be delivered to one or more recipients. It's attached below. For further assistance, please send mail to postmaster.
