  • Configure Local Mail on Ubuntu

    - by Eric J.
My cron jobs are trying to mail their results using the local mail feature of Ubuntu (not internet email, the kind of mail you can read with mutt). However, /var/log/syslog reports /USR/SBIN/CRON[19212]: (speedtax) MAIL (mailed 52 bytes of output but got status 0x0006 ) I would like to setup local mail (so that cron can deliver the output successfully) but do not want to setup internet email. Everything I find on google is about the latter.

  • Permissions changed after Mail.app and associated data crash

    - by Olivier
Hi there, I experienced a major Mail.app crash on Snow Leopard couple of days ago. It took me hours to be able to make the folder structure usable again by Mail. I changed permissions back to 755 for all subfolders starting from and including ~/Library/Mail Mail now works again but settings such as folder order in the left side bar and mail ordered by date in some folders don't persist anymore. Any idea? Thxs for help

  • Help configuring Mercury mail or similiar with XAMPP to send e-mail outside of localhost

    - by user291040
I'm building a PHP/MySQL driven website for my department at work (installed via XAMPP). I need to be able to send mail to outside e-mail addresses (e.g., Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) using the PHP mail() function. As I see it I have to solutions: Configure the SMTP directive in php.ini to the server running at my work. Configure/run a mail server that can send e-mails outside of localhost (I'm trying Mercury because it comes installed with XAMPP). Here are problems I've come up against: I took a guess at our SMTP server name, and when calling PHP mail(), I get the error SMTP server response: 530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated I can't be sure, however, the SMTP name is correct (I can't get help from our IT guys because of politics). I have tried to use mercury mail. Mercury seems to be picking up the request, but it doesn't want to forward the e-mail to the outside. I keep getting a Temporary error 240 (temporary MX resolution error). I've searched high and low but still can't find a definitive answer on how to send e-mails outside of localhost. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  • Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP without redundancy

    - by Cawas
I don't care for actually using mail app, I use mostly the gmail interface and mail app just for offline, for quickly reading and eventually replying. Everything is working fine, I think I've followed every guide out there... Here's a great one. But I could find nothing about avoiding redundancy. Well, I can manually do that either by using POP or by checking off most of my labels out of IMAP. But I do use a lot of labels and I often label messages with more than 1 label. And I want them on mail app. Is there anyway to make it keep just 1 copy of repeated messages? Maybe there's a message id or checksum that could be used... If there isn't a way to do it, be assured I still prefer having the extra messages and "wasting" space rather than not having any. edit: I've came across many solutions for finding duplicate files, but they just delete the files. That just make things worst: Mail will just sync it all again. I've realized it's probably better to keep two accounts setup, POP for backup and IMAP for everything else with removing the "All Mail" from it. That's because if the "All Mail" on the server is deleted for any reason, my "All Mail" local will also get deleted, while POP will keep all files regardless of the server. This doesn't solve the redundancy issue at all, but it doesn't create any new issue as well, and I can even use the search properly, without duplicated results, if I search just on the POP. So it helps optimizing a little bit. But I still think the best way to solve this issue would be having something such as aamann's Mail Scripts tweaked to hardlinking the duplicates rather than deleting, and optimized to not need to scan everything every time. I'm trying to contact him and see what we can do. At any pace, I'm still looking for an answer!

  • hMail server - sending copy of an e-mail changing the sender

    - by Beggycev
Dear All please help me with following request. I am using hMail server in a company(test.com) and have several hundred of guest e-mail accounts ([email protected]). I need to accomplish this: When any of the guest e-mails receives a message(either from internal or external sender) this e-mail(or its copy) is sent to another address "[email protected]" which is the same for all of these guest e-mails. But I need the sender to be identified as the [email protected] not as the original sender which happens when I use forwarding. I tried to prepare a simple VBS script using the OnAcceptMessage event to accomplish this. and it works on my testing machine without internet connectivity but not in the production environment. To be specific, if I send an e-mail to [email protected] in my test env it is delivered to the [email protected] with [email protected] being a sender. But in the production env the e-mail stays in the guest mailbox with the original sender. I am interested in any solution, using a rule in hMail or script, anything is welcome. Thank you for any help! The script: Sub OnAcceptMessage(oClient, oMessage) 'creating application object in order to perform operations as hMail server administrator Dim obApp Set obApp = CreateObject("hMailServer.Application") Dim adminLogin Dim adminPassword 'Enter actual values for administrator account and password 'CHANGE HERE: adminLogin = "Admin_login" adminPassword = "password" Call obApp.Authenticate(adminLogin, adminPassword) Dim addrStart 'Take first 5 characters of recipients address addrStart = Mid(oMessage. To, 1, 5) 'if the recipient's address start with "guest" if addrStart = "guest" then Dim recipient Dim recipientAddress 'enter name of the recipient and respective e-mail address() 'CHANGE HERE: recipient = "FINAL" recipientAddress = "[email protected]" 'change the sender and sender e-mail address to the guest oMessage.FromAddress = oMessage. To oMessage. From = oMessage. To & "<" & oMessage. To & ">" 'delete recipients and enter a new one - the actual mps and its e-mail from the variables set above oMessage.ClearRecipients() oMessage.AddRecipient recipient, recipientAddress 'save the e-mail oMessage.save end if End Sub

  • Leopard mail.app quoted-printable weirdness

    - by pehrs
I am not sure if this is a bug in mail.app, or a configuration I just can't find. It might also be a strange sideffect of GPGmail. Mail.app correctly displays all e-mails on my IMAP server, except for the e-mails in my "Sent Messages" folder. In the sent messages folder it messes up åäö, in typical quoted-printable with wrong char-set fashion. They become ‰ˆ. When looking at the source of the e-mails it seems like the header generated by mail.app is correct: Message-Id: <> From: To: In-Reply-To: <> Content-Type: multipart/signed; protocol="application/pgp-signature"; micalg=pgp-sha1; boundary="Apple-Mail-4--741321197" X-Smtp-Server: smtp.example.com Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Mime-Version: 1.0 (Apple Message framework v936) Subject: Example subject Date: Fri, 26 Mar 2010 10:14:14 +0100 References: <> X-Pgp-Agent: GPGMail 1.2.0 (v56) This is an OpenPGP/MIME signed message (RFC 2440 and 3156) --Apple-Mail-4--741321197 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1; format=flowed; delsp=yes Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable <Text here with =E5=E4=F6> --Apple-Mail-4--741321197 content-type: application/pgp-signature; x-mac-type=70674453; name=PGP.sig content-description: This is a digitally signed message part content-disposition: inline; filename=PGP.sig content-transfer-encoding: 7bit -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG/MacGPG2 v2.0.12 (Darwin) iEYEARECAAYFAkus62kACgkQlIRLofxhDjYnnwCcDmCXuMGsKlh3a418s12coJgn 36sAoKMdkP3+g/OMK+Ps7AbjQq4Nbqzv =XMko -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- --Apple-Mail-4--741321197-- Thunderbird has no problem displaying the messages. • Suddenly can't send E-Mails with Apple Mail to Gmail SMTP

    - by slhck
Hi all, I have a weird problem that started just today. I am using Apple Mail on a Leopard machine, connecting to Gmail. Fetching e-mail works just fine. My SMTP settings are also correct. Still, I can't send mail, it will display a pop up saying that "transferring the content to the mail server" failed (translation from German, could be different in English OS X versions). I have verified the following: My SMTP settings are definitely correct. I have not changed them and the issue appeared today. Also, I went through the Apple online configuration for Gmail accounts and did not have to adjust any setting. I can run network diagnosis and it will connect to both POP and SMTP servers without a problem (all green lights) The Telnet details will show me the HELO message from the Gmail servers, so there's no authentication failure. Console.app will not show any messages related to "mail" when I try to send the mail, so there's no specific error message The mail I'm trying to send does not have an attachment, it is plaintext only I can login to gmail.com and send mails without a problem The recipient address exists and contains no syntax errors I can also not send mails to myself When using another IP and ISP (through VPN), it still doesn't work As for my settings: I connect to smtp.gmail.com and for advanced settings I choose password-based authentication with user: [email protected] and my password. I let Apple Mail try the default ports (for SSL and TLS, respectively). Again: I have not changed a thing between yesterday and today. What is causing that strange behavior? Any help would be much appreciated.

  • Operator Overloading for Queue C++

    - by Josh
    I was trying to use the overload operator method to copy the entries of one queue into another, but I am going wrong with my function. I don't know how else to access the values of the queue "original" any other way than what I have below: struct Node { int item; Node* next; }; class Queue { public: [...] //Extra code here void operator = (const Queue &original); protected: Node *front, *end; } void Queue::operator=(const Queue &original) { //THIS IS WHERE IM GOING WRONG while(original.front->next != NULL) { front->item = original.front->item; front->next = new Node; front = front->next; original.front = original.front->next; } }

  • Program crash on deque from queue

    - by SwedishGit
My first question asked here, so please excuse if I fail to include something... I'm working on a homework project, which basically consists of creating a "Jukebox" (importing/exporting albums from txt files, creating and "playing" a playlist, etc.). I've become stuck on one point: When "playing" the playlist, which consists of a self-made Queue, a copy of it is made from which songs are dequeued and printed out with a time delay. This appears to run fine on the first run through the program, but if the "play" option is chosen again (with the same playlist, created from a different menu option), it crashes before managing to print the first song. It also crashes if creating a new playlist, but then it manages to print some songs (seem to depend on the number of songs in the first/new playlists...) before crashing. With printouts I've been able to track the crashing down to being on the "item = n-data" call in the deque function... but can't get my head around why this would crash. Below is the code I think should be relevant... let me know if there are other parts that would help if I include. Edit: The Debug Error shown on crash is: R6010 abort() has been called The method to play from the playlist: void Jukebox::playList() { if(songList.getNodes() > 0) { Queue tmpList(songList); Song tmpSong; while(tmpList.deque(tmpSong)) { clock_t temp; temp = clock () + 2 * CLOCKS_PER_SEC ; while (clock() < temp) {} } } else cout << "There are no songs in the playlist!" << endl; } Queue: // Queue.h - Projekt-uppgift // Håkan Sjölin 2014-05-31 //----------------------------------------------------------------------------- #ifndef queue_h #define queue_h #include "Song.h" using namespace std; • When do I use Apache Kafka, Azure Service Bus, vs Azure Queues?

    - by makerofthings7
I'm trying to understand the situations I'd use Apache Kafka, Azure Service Bus, or Azure Queues for high scale message processing. Which is better for standard Pub Sub situations? Where multiple clients get a copy of the same message? Which is better for low latency Pub sub and no durability? Which is better for "cooperating producer" and "competing consumer"? (what does this mean?) I see a bit of overlap in function between Kafka, Service Bus, Azure Queues

  • Mail.app doesn't see mail changes; requires mailbox "rebuild"

    - by vy32
I use Mail.app on 4 different computers to access the same mailboxes. I see the same problem on all of them --- if the Mail.app is running, then it catches all of the mail updates. But if a machine is turned off, when it turns back on the mailbox doesn't synchronize properly. I might delete 20 mail messages on one system and they are still on system #2 until I "rebuild." I have seen this happen with the Mobile Me IMAP server, with Gmail, with courier IMAP, and with dovecot. Does anybody else see this? What should I do? Is there a mail server that this happens less with? It's very frustrating, as I get 200-300 mail messages a day and frequently end up handling email messages multiple times.

  • Forward e-mail to multiple addresses with conditions

    - by Valera Leontyev
I need to forward e-mails to different mail accounts by different conditions. The aim is to create mail notification scheme for my company. I'd like to setup server on dedicated mail domain for it. Is there any software that helps to get my aim (Linux)? Examples: 1) forward all e-mail sent to [email protected] to x@x, y@y, z@z (no conditions) 2) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[finance]' to a@b and b@b 3) forward e-mail sent to [email protected] where subject contains '[fault]' to s@s and s2@s. Receivers' domains are different. P.S. Now we use Gmail filters to get this functionality, but it's unstable and hard to maintain.

  • Priority queue with dynamic item priorities.

    - by sean
I need to implement a priority queue where the priority of an item in the queue can change and the queue adjusts itself so that items are always removed in the correct order. I have some ideas of how I could implement this but I'm sure this is quite a common data structure so I'm hoping I can use an implementation by someone smarter than me as a base. Can anyone tell me the name of this type of priority queue so I know what to search for or, even better, point me to an implementation?

  • Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

    - by CoreSandello
Hi there. I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

  • Getting sendmail to install/work for using php mail()

    - by harryg
I'm running WordPress on a Ubuntu VPS. When WordPress tries to send an email like a password reset or registration email it never gets delivered. WordPress uses php's mail() function. I figure it's not working as my VPS didn't have sendmail installed. So I went into SSH and installed it with sudo apt-get install sendmail which appeared to succeed. Following more googled advice I edited the php.ini file to have the sendmail path. I located it as being /usr/sbin/sendmail which I believe is typical for many *nix servers. To check I browsed to this directory on FTP. The "sendmail" directory appears to be a shortcut. Is this correct/expected? Either way the php mail function is not working. I have created a phpinfo file and a test mail php file which contains just a mail() function with my email as the recipient. Note: my VPS doesn't yet have a domain, just an IP address. Would this affect sendmail functionality? My phpinfo is here for your reference: http://95.142.166.209/phpinfo.php Do I also need postfix? I don't think I have it... Here is some of the mail log. I executed the mail function towards the end: Nov 27 18:41:02 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5450]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 19:00:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5497]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 19:01:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5497]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 19:20:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5532]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 19:21:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5532]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 19:40:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5568]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 19:41:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5568]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 20:00:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5605]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 20:01:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5605]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 20:20:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5641]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 20:21:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5641]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 20:40:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5675]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 20:41:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5675]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 21:00:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5712]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 21:01:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5712]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 21:20:02 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5747]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 21:21:02 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5747]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 21:40:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5782]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 21:41:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5782]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 22:00:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5831]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 22:01:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5831]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 22:20:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5866]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 22:21:01 sergeserver sm-msp-queue[5866]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 22:37:19 sergeserver sendmail[5903]: My unqualified host name (sergeserver) unknown; sleeping for retry Nov 27 22:38:19 sergeserver sendmail[5903]: unable to qualify my own domain name (sergeserver) -- using short name Nov 27 22:38:19 sergeserver sendmail[5903]: qARLcJYI005903: from=adminftp, size=158, class=0, nrcpts=0, msgid=<201211272138.qARLcJYI005903@sergeserver>, relay=adminftp@localhost

  • PTLQueue : a scalable bounded-capacity MPMC queue

    - by Dave
Title: Fast concurrent MPMC queue -- I've used the following concurrent queue algorithm enough that it warrants a blog entry. I'll sketch out the design of a fast and scalable multiple-producer multiple-consumer (MPSC) concurrent queue called PTLQueue. The queue has bounded capacity and is implemented via a circular array. Bounded capacity can be a useful property if there's a mismatch between producer rates and consumer rates where an unbounded queue might otherwise result in excessive memory consumption by virtue of the container nodes that -- in some queue implementations -- are used to hold values. A bounded-capacity queue can provide flow control between components. Beware, however, that bounded collections can also result in resource deadlock if abused. The put() and take() operators are partial and wait for the collection to become non-full or non-empty, respectively. Put() and take() do not allocate memory, and are not vulnerable to the ABA pathologies. The PTLQueue algorithm can be implemented equally well in C/C++ and Java. Partial operators are often more convenient than total methods. In many use cases if the preconditions aren't met, there's nothing else useful the thread can do, so it may as well wait via a partial method. An exception is in the case of work-stealing queues where a thief might scan a set of queues from which it could potentially steal. Total methods return ASAP with a success-failure indication. (It's tempting to describe a queue or API as blocking or non-blocking instead of partial or total, but non-blocking is already an overloaded concurrency term. Perhaps waiting/non-waiting or patient/impatient might be better terms). It's also trivial to construct partial operators by busy-waiting via total operators, but such constructs may be less efficient than an operator explicitly and intentionally designed to wait. A PTLQueue instance contains an array of slots, where each slot has volatile Turn and MailBox fields. The array has power-of-two length allowing mod/div operations to be replaced by masking. We assume sensible padding and alignment to reduce the impact of false sharing. (On x86 I recommend 128-byte alignment and padding because of the adjacent-sector prefetch facility). Each queue also has PutCursor and TakeCursor cursor variables, each of which should be sequestered as the sole occupant of a cache line or sector. You can opt to use 64-bit integers if concerned about wrap-around aliasing in the cursor variables. Put(null) is considered illegal, but the caller or implementation can easily check for and convert null to a distinguished non-null proxy value if null happens to be a value you'd like to pass. Take() will accordingly convert the proxy value back to null. An advantage of PTLQueue is that you can use atomic fetch-and-increment for the partial methods. We initialize each slot at index I with (Turn=I, MailBox=null). Both cursors are initially 0. All shared variables are considered "volatile" and atomics such as CAS and AtomicFetchAndIncrement are presumed to have bidirectional fence semantics. Finally T is the templated type. I've sketched out a total tryTake() method below that allows the caller to poll the queue. tryPut() has an analogous construction. The latter is essentially a circular ring-buffer where the elements themselves are queues or concurrent collections. You can think of the PTLQueue as a partitioned ticket lock "PTL" augmented to pass values from lock to unlock via the slots. Alternatively, you could conceptualize of PTLQueue as a degenerate MultiLane bag where each slot or "lane" consists of a simple single-word MailBox instead of a general queue. Each lane in PTLQueue also has a private Turn field which acts like the Turn (Grant) variables found in PTL. Turn enforces strict FIFO ordering and restricts concurrency on the slot mailbox field to at most one simultaneous put() and take() operation. PTL uses a single "ticket" variable and per-slot Turn (grant) fields while MultiLane has distinct PutCursor and TakeCursor cursors and abstract per-slot sub-queues. Both PTL and MultiLane advance their cursor and ticket variables with atomic fetch-and-increment. PTLQueue borrows from both PTL and MultiLane and has distinct put and take cursors and per-slot Turn fields. Instead of a per-slot queues, PTLQueue uses a simple single-word MailBox field. PutCursor and TakeCursor act like a pair of ticket locks, conferring "put" and "take" access to a given slot. PutCursor, for instance, assigns an incoming put() request to a slot and serves as a PTL "Ticket" to acquire "put" permission to that slot's MailBox field. To better explain the operation of PTLQueue we deconstruct the operation of put() and take() as follows. Put() first increments PutCursor obtaining a new unique ticket. That ticket value also identifies a slot. Put() next waits for that slot's Turn field to match that ticket value. This is tantamount to using a PTL to acquire "put" permission on the slot's MailBox field. Finally, having obtained exclusive "put" permission on the slot, put() stores the message value into the slot's MailBox. Take() similarly advances TakeCursor, identifying a slot, and then acquires and secures "take" permission on a slot by waiting for Turn. Take() then waits for the slot's MailBox to become non-empty, extracts the message, and clears MailBox. Finally, take() advances the slot's Turn field, which releases both "put" and "take" access to the slot's MailBox. Note the asymmetry : put() acquires "put" access to the slot, but take() releases that lock. At any given time, for a given slot in a PTLQueue, at most one thread has "put" access and at most one thread has "take" access. This restricts concurrency from general MPMC to 1-vs-1. We have 2 ticket locks -- one for put() and one for take() -- each with its own "ticket" variable in the form of the corresponding cursor, but they share a single "Grant" egress variable in the form of the slot's Turn variable. Advancing the PutCursor, for instance, serves two purposes. First, we obtain a unique ticket which identifies a slot. Second, incrementing the cursor is the doorway protocol step to acquire the per-slot mutual exclusion "put" lock. The cursors and operations to increment those cursors serve double-duty : slot-selection and ticket assignment for locking the slot's MailBox field. At any given time a slot MailBox field can be in one of the following states: empty with no pending operations -- neutral state; empty with one or more waiting take() operations pending -- deficit; occupied with no pending operations; occupied with one or more waiting put() operations -- surplus; empty with a pending put() or pending put() and take() operations -- transitional; or occupied with a pending take() or pending put() and take() operations -- transitional. The partial put() and take() operators can be implemented with an atomic fetch-and-increment operation, which may confer a performance advantage over a CAS-based loop. In addition we have independent PutCursor and TakeCursor cursors. Critically, a put() operation modifies PutCursor but does not access the TakeCursor and a take() operation modifies the TakeCursor cursor but does not access the PutCursor. This acts to reduce coherence traffic relative to some other queue designs. It's worth noting that slow threads or obstruction in one slot (or "lane") does not impede or obstruct operations in other slots -- this gives us some degree of obstruction isolation. PTLQueue is not lock-free, however. The implementation above is expressed with polite busy-waiting (Pause) but it's trivial to implement per-slot parking and unparking to deschedule waiting threads. It's also easy to convert the queue to a more general deque by replacing the PutCursor and TakeCursor cursors with Left/Front and Right/Back cursors that can move either direction. Specifically, to push and pop from the "left" side of the deque we would decrement and increment the Left cursor, respectively, and to push and pop from the "right" side of the deque we would increment and decrement the Right cursor, respectively. We used a variation of PTLQueue for message passing in our recent OPODIS 2013 paper. ul { list-style:none; padding-left:0; padding:0; margin:0; margin-left:0; } ul#myTagID { padding: 0px; margin: 0px; list-style:none; margin-left:0;} -- -- There's quite a bit of related literature in this area. I'll call out a few relevant references: Wilson's NYU Courant Institute UltraComputer dissertation from 1988 is classic and the canonical starting point : Operating System Data Structures for Shared-Memory MIMD Machines with Fetch-and-Add. Regarding provenance and priority, I think PTLQueue or queues effectively equivalent to PTLQueue have been independently rediscovered a number of times. See CB-Queue and BNPBV, below, for instance. But Wilson's dissertation anticipates the basic idea and seems to predate all the others. John Mellor-Crummey : Concurrent queues: Practical fetch-and-phi algorithms. Technical Report 229, Department of Computer Science, University of Rochester Thomasson : FIFO Distributed Bakery Algorithm (very similar to PTLQueue). Scott and Scherer : Dual Data Structures I'll propose an optimization left as an exercise for the reader. Say we wanted to reduce memory usage by eliminating inter-slot padding. Such padding is usually "dark" memory and otherwise unused and wasted. But eliminating the padding leaves us at risk of increased false sharing. Furthermore lets say it was usually the case that the PutCursor and TakeCursor were numerically close to each other. (That's true in some use cases). We might still reduce false sharing by incrementing the cursors by some value other than 1 that is not trivially small and is coprime with the number of slots. Alternatively, we might increment the cursor by one and mask as usual, resulting in a logical index. We then use that logical index value to index into a permutation table, yielding an effective index for use in the slot array. The permutation table would be constructed so that nearby logical indices would map to more distant effective indices. (Open question: what should that permutation look like? Possibly some perversion of a Gray code or De Bruijn sequence might be suitable). As an aside, say we need to busy-wait for some condition as follows : "while C == 0 : Pause". Lets say that C is usually non-zero, so we typically don't wait. But when C happens to be 0 we'll have to spin for some period, possibly brief. We can arrange for the code to be more machine-friendly with respect to the branch predictors by transforming the loop into : "if C == 0 : for { Pause; if C != 0 : break; }". Critically, we want to restructure the loop so there's one branch that controls entry and another that controls loop exit. A concern is that your compiler or JIT might be clever enough to transform this back to "while C == 0 : Pause". You can sometimes avoid this by inserting a call to a some type of very cheap "opaque" method that the compiler can't elide or reorder. On Solaris, for instance, you could use :"if C == 0 : { gethrtime(); for { Pause; if C != 0 : break; }}". It's worth noting the obvious duality between locks and queues. If you have strict FIFO lock implementation with local spinning and succession by direct handoff such as MCS or CLH,then you can usually transform that lock into a queue. • MSMQ first Message.Body in queue is OK, all following Message.Body in queue are empty

    - by Andrew A
I send a handful of identical (except for Id#, obviously) messages to an MSMQ queue on my local machine. The body of the messages is a serialized XElement object. When I try to process the first message in the queue, I am able to successfully de-serialize the Message.Body object and save it to file. However, when trying to process the next (or any subsequent) message, the Message.Body is absent, and an exception is thrown. I have verified the Message ID's are correct for the message attempting to be processed. The XML being serialized is properly formed. Any ideas? I am basing my code on the Microsoft MSMQ Book order sample found here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms180970%28VS.80%29.aspx // Create Envelope XML object XElement envelope = new XElement(env + "Envelope", new XAttribute(XNamespace.Xmlns + "env", env.NamespaceName) <snip> //Send envelope as message body MessageQueue myQueue = new MessageQueue(String.Format(@"FORMATNAME:DIRECT=OS:localhost\private$\mqsample")); myQueue.DefaultPropertiesToSend.Recoverable = true; // Prepare message Message myMessage = new Message(); myMessage.ResponseQueue = new MessageQueue(String.Format(System.Globalization.CultureInfo.InvariantCulture, @"FORMATNAME:DIRECT=TCP:192.168.1.217\private$\mqdemoAck")); myMessage.Body = envelope; // Send the message into the queue. myQueue.Send(myMessage,"message label"); //Retrieve messages from queue LabelIdMapping labelID = (LabelIdMapping)mqlistBox3.SelectedItem; System.Messaging.Message message = mqOrderQueue.ReceiveById(labelID.Id); The Message.Body value I see on the 1st retrieve is as expected: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <string>Some String</string> However, the 2nd and subsequent retrieve operations Message.Body is: "Cannot deserialize the message passed as an argument. Cannot recognize the serialization format." How does this work fine the first time but not after that? I have tried message.Dispose() after retrieving it but it did not help. Thank you very much for any help on this!
