• Is there any way to automatically prevent running out of memory?

  I am often running out of memory on my VPS ubuntu server. I wish there was a way to simply restart apache2 when it starts running out of memory, as that seems to solve the problem. Or am I just too lazy to fix the problem? I do have limited memory on the server... Okay, more information: I'm running apache2 prefork, here are my memory settings (i've been tweaking them...): StartServers 3 MinSpareServers 1 MaxSpareServers 5 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 1000 The VPS has 1 GB of ram, running ubuntu 11.04 32-bit. As for scripts, I have a wordpress network with 5 blogs, an install of AskBot (a python/django stackexchange clone), and an install of MediaWiki that isn't really used. There is also a homebrewed mp3 script that accesses the getid3 library to display information on lists of podcasts, and it seems to be throwing some php errors, not sure if that's the culprit...

  This post led me to ask that question. Cache contention On a large site, if you are using MyISAM, contention occurs in the database tables when the cache is forced to clear after a node or a comment is added. With tens of thousands of filter text snippets needing to be deleted, the table will be locked for a long period, and any accesses to it will be queued pending the purge of the data in it. The same is true for the page cache as well. This often causes a "site hang" for a minute or two. During that time new requests keep piling up, and if you do not have the MaxClients parameter in Apache setup correctly, the system can go into thrashing because of excessive swapping.

  I apologize in advance if this is a basic question, but I am quite confused after reading the Apache documentation and other tutorials. Does a single Apache prefork process serve all HTTP requests for a given client? That's what I thought, but when I reduce maxclients down to a low number, my page load times go to a crawl. This despite the fact I'm the only client on the server in question. This would suggest each process serves a single HTTP request at a time, rather than serving all requests within the TimeOut window. So if a single webpage requires 15 HTTP requests to load fully, do I require 15 prefork Apache processes to optimally serve it?

• Php getting too many connections error from MySQL

  Hello everyone, I am using MySQL and PHP with 2 application servers and 1 database server. With the increase of the number of users (around 1000 by now), I'm getting the following error : SQLSTATE[08004] [1040] Too many connections The parameter "max_connections" is set to "1000" in my.cnf and "mysql.max_persistent" is set to -1 in php.ini. There are at most 1500 apache processes running at a time since the "MaxClients" apache parameter is equal to 750 and we have 2 application servers. Should I raise the "max_connections" to 1500 as indicated in here? Or should I set "mysql.max_persistent" to 750 (we use PDO with persistent connections for performance reasons since the database server is not the same as the application servers)? Or should I try something else? Thanks in advance!

• How can I optimize Apache to use 1GB of RAM on my website? [closed]

  My VPS plan gives me 1GB of RAM burstable to 2GB. Of course I cannot use 2 GB, nor 1 GB, everyday, so I'm planning to optimize the performance of my webserver. The average of hits-per-hour is about 8'000-10'000. This means about 2 connections-per-second. Max hits-per-hour reached until now is about 60'000. That means about 16 connections-per-second. Unluckily my current apache configuration uses too much memory (when there are not connected clients - usually during the night - it uses about 1GB) so I've tried to customize the apache installation to fit to my needs. I'm using Ubuntu, kernel 2.6.18, with apache2-mpm-worker, since I've read it requires less memory, and fcgid ( + PHP). I think the virt memory is to big, the same res. The consumption of ram is increasing all the time. Maybe it's memory leak because i see there is so many static modules compiled. He explains how to get the numbers for an average process, which I get. But then: Or roughly 53MB per process...In this case, ten threads should be safe. This means that if we receive more than ten simultaneous requests, the other requests will be queued until a worker thread is available. In order to maximize performance, we will also configure the system to have this number of threads available all of the time. • Apache2 random 403 error & info server busy logs on Ubuntu

  Hello, I have a strange situation with apache2. Meanless, random 403 errors. Any page (html, php etc.) normally working. but if i request repeatedly by pressing refresh button of browser. it interrupts & sends a 403 randomly. after a few seconds it works again. in the error log, i see client denied by server configuration. main error log of apache says [info] server seems busy, (you may need to increase StartServers, or Min/MaxSpareServers), spawning 8 children, there are 99 idle, and 137 total children my current values IfModule mpm_prefork_module StartServers 120 MinSpareServers 100 MaxSpareServers 200 MaxClients 256 MaxRequestsPerChild 500 /IfModule i've increased 10 by 10. from 20. but nothing solved. i've disabled KeepAlive.   Help is greatly needed for our server. We are experiencing random "Connection reset by peer: mod_fcgid: error reading data from FastCGI server" errors which cause a 500 internal server error. If the page is then reloaded it loads normally as it should. We are running MPM Worker with mod FCGID to handle PHP. We had APC cache enabled but disabled it recently to see if it would fix the problem, but the random mod FCGID errors are still continuing. No other opcode cache is active now. This is random and occurrs less than 1% of the time but it is still an issue.

• Viability of Apache (MPM Worker), FastCGI PHP 4/5.2/5.3, and MySQL 5

  My server will be hosting numerous PHP web applications ranging from Joomla, Drupal, and some legacy (read: PHP4) and other custom-built code inherited from clients. This will be a development machine used by a dozen or so web developers and issues like fluctuating loads or particularly high load expectations are not important. Now, my question: are there any concerns I should know about when using Apache w/ MPM Worker, PHP 4/PHP 5.2/PHP 5.3 (all via FastCGI), and MySQL 5 (with a query cache of 64MB)? I have not tested the various applications extensively and I have only recently learned how to install PHP and utilize it via FastCGI (rather than mod_php, which in this case seemed impossible (considering the multiple versions of PHP and the desire to use MPM Worker over MPM Prefork)). I have come to understand that there could be concerns regarding XCache and APC, namely non-thread-safety issues where data becomes corrupted and the capability to use MPM Worker becomes null and void. Is this a valid concern? I have been using my personal testing server (running Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04 in VirtualBox) which has 2GB of RAM available to it. • Apache is spawning more and more processes!!

  We have a LAMP setup that is working prety good for half a year. All of a sudden today the apache server (mysql servers are not on this box) started to die. It seems to have started to spawn more and more processes over time. Eventually it will consume all the memory and the server would just die. We are using prefork. In the mean time what we are doing is just added more ram and increased the MaxClients and ServerLimit parameter to 512. We're just prolonging the crash. The number still goes up slowly. Maybe in a day, it would reach that limit. What is going on? We only have around 15-20 request per second. We have 1Gb memory and it's not half used, there's no swapping going on. Why is apache creating more and more processes? It's almost like theres a leak somewhere! The database boxes are fine, they are not causing a delay to requests. We tested some queries everything is quick!

• Apache taking up a lot of CPU while running request-tracker4

  I am trying out a request-tracker installation on an EC2 micro instance. The specs for the micro instance are as follows 1) Ubuntu 12.04 64bit, 613MB RAM, 8GB Hard Drive 2) Running request-tracker 4.0.4 from the repository, perl 5.14.2, Apache2, MySQL5 3) Request-tracker4.0.4 running with mod_perl2 and Worker mpm 4) Apache configured with Worker MPM. Config snippet given below Timeout 150 KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 60 KeepAliveTimeout 2 <IfModule mpm_worker_module> StartServers 2 MinSpareThreads 25 MaxSpareThreads 75 ThreadLimit 64 ThreadsPerChild 25 MaxClients 150 MaxRequestsPerChild 0 </IfModule> Now when I start Apache2 it works fine for some time and after a while the CPU load shoots up to 99% or more. Usually it is one or more Apache processes doing this. I've tried a to modify the worker module configuration without any luck. The log files for both Apache2 and request-tracker4 are set to log debug messages and don't show anything to indicate what could be causing this. The system gets a maximum of 5 users at any given time and usually (90% of the time) it is just 2. I've just installed it and we only have 20 tickets in the database. I don't think its the memory thats causing the issue since the server isn't swapping or even close to it and I hardly see the memory usage go up. Would appreciate any pointers on how to go about troubleshooting this. In case it helps I've also tried this out a similar installation on a small instance (Identical settings except RAM bumped upto 1.7GB) and I still see the issue.

• Why is my apache2, mod_fcgid, php configuration causing 100% cpu usage?

  Page load makes a quick initial connection, then hangs about 10 seconds before the page renders. When the server load goes up I start watching top & I see that both CPUs get pegged at times to 100% by between 4-8 processes of php-cgi. My theory is that since I never see RAM usage never go above 50%, that apache is able to handle the requests coming in, but is queueing them for PHP to process. What is wrong with my mod_fcgid/php configuration ? • Apache httpd processes and PHP out of memory

  I have a VPS running apache-php-mysql on centos and a single drupal website installed. The VPS has 256MB of RAM (could be the root cause of all my problems... maybe I just need more). Whenever I try to open my website from multiple browser tabs (about 8... not 800) all at once, apache crashes! I have this on the log: [Wed Oct 24 11:26:31 2012] [error] [client xxx] PHP Fatal error: Out of memory (allocated 28049408) (tried to allocate 201335 bytes) in xxx on line 2139, referer: xxx I have read many many posts here, but I think there is something fundamental that I'm missing - If I understand correctly some php script tried to allocate 200K after allocating 28MB, and fails to do so. First question is: should this cause the apache to crash??? Next, I tried to look at 'top' command while I do my little test. Indeed I see 7 httpd processes, each reserving about 30MB - which explains why my RAM runs out. How do I prevent apache from creating new processes until it's out of memory? I tried configuring /etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf like this: <IfModule prefork.c> StartServers 1 MinSpareServers 1 MaxSpareServers 1 ServerLimit 1 MaxClients 1 MaxRequestsPerChild 100 </IfModule> But got the same exact result! • Apache going straight to 100% mem usage on localhost

  Hi, I'm running XAMPP on a OS X testing server... I'm the only person sending requests to the server. I've never messed with Apache config before, so I'm kinda without a paddle here. When I start Apache, I get ~10 httpd processes started, and 95% idle CPU. When I request a WordPress page, the CPU usage goes to 50%, and the page loads in about five seconds. It seems like once the page has finished loading, the CPU usage jumps to 100%, almost all of that httpd. A ton of processes get started, and they don't go away, and their CPU usage stays the same. I've changed the MaxRequestPerChild setting and so forth, but nothing seems to solve the problem. Even now, having not send any requests for about 15 minutes, the CPU usage is at 100%. Here's the applicable settings: Timeout 10 KeepAlive On MaxKeepAliveRequests 0 KeepAliveTimeout 3 <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 5 MinSpareServers 0 MaxSpareServers 2 MaxClients 20 MaxRequestsPerChild 50 </IfModule> I had always thought that once the request was made, Apache killed the process.   I am running a plesk panel in 1and1. I have 120 sites running and all are using pligg cms, each site has 600 visitors per day. Please see the details of my server below: HDD-1000GB RAM-16GB Processor-6 Core I always see a lot of apache processes running in my # top view, so the server seems overloaded. If I can reduce the amount apache processes I think the server will be ok. But I don't know why too many apache processes are running. The database was knocked offline after the attack, and was unable to restart itself after it failed to restart when the attack subsided. • Having trouble keeping a 1GB RAM Centos server running

  This is my first time configuring a VPS server and I'm having a few issues. We're running Wordpress on a 1GB Centos server configured per the internet (online research). No custom queries or anything crazy but closing in on 8K posts. At arbitrary intervals, the server just goes down. From the client side, it just says "Loading..." and will spin more or less indefinitely. On the server side, the shell will lock completely. We have to do a hard reboot from the control panel and then everything is fine. Watching "top" I see it hovering between 35 - 55% memory usage generally and occasional spikes up to around 80%. When I saw it go down, there were about 30 - 40 Apache processes showing which pushed memory over the edge. "error_log" tells me that maxclients was reached right before each reboot instance. I've tried tinkering with that but to no avail. I think we'll probably need to bump the server up to the next RAM level but with ~120K pageviews per month, it seems like that's a bit overkill since it was running fairly well on a shared server before. Any ideas? httpd.conf and my.cnf values to add? I'll update this with the current ones if that helps. Thanks in advance! • VPS goes slow at more than 20 users online at the same time

  I have 512 MB VPS (brustable to 1GB) Somehow, the site goes slow when there are about 10 users, and becomes impossible to load at 20 users online at the same time. I wonder what could be the problem for this. The bandwidth connection of the VPS is 1Gbps. The server is in Japan, but the site has global traffic (some of the traffic are from countries with low speed connection). Could this be the problem? • apache chokes after 300 connections

  We have an apache webserver in front of Tomcat hosted on EC2, instance type is extra large with 34GB memory. Our application deals with lot of external webservices and we have a very lousy external webservice which takes almost 300 seconds to respond to requests during peak hours. During peak hours the server chokes at just about 300 httpd processes. ps -ef | grep httpd | wc -l =300 I have googled and found numerous suggestions but nothing seems to work.. following are some configuration i have done which are directly taken from online resources. The server chokes only during peak hours and when there are 300 concurrent requests waiting for the [300 second delayed] webservice to respond. Please help..

• How can see what processes makes my server slow?

  All my websites on my server are extremely slow or not loading at all. Even server admin (Plesk) will not load some times. There's been no changes to the sites for the last coupple of months. How can I see what processes is making my server slow? My environment looks like this: Server: VPS running Linux 2.8.x OS: Centos 5 Manage interface: Plesk 9.x Memmory: 1024MB CPU: 2.2GHz My websites run on PHP and MySQL. I finally managed to telnet (Putty + SSH) in to my server. Running top did not show any processes using more than max 2% CPU and none were using exesive memmory. I also got a friend to install a program that checks the core files, and all seemed fine. So I'm leaning towards network issues or some other server malfunction. But I'm not able to find out what can be wrong. Here are some answers to Sean Kimball: I don't run mail services on my server yet There are noe specific bandwidth peaks. But I think it's up and running. There are no processes running wild Where can I find avarage load? Telnet is disabled and I have to log in using SSH :)

• Apache 2 settings for high traffic website

  I'm having problems with the load on my website. It's an amazon ec2 server with 15Gb ram and 4 CPUs behind an LB. apachetop says I'm getting around 80 reqs per second which seems really low for this kind of server and the load ( given by top ) is usually around 15 but does increase to about 150 in 24 hrs. I'm seeing about 100 active apache processes at any time. Apache is in prefork mode. Mysql is used very little on the server and there are almost no static files. Here are my Apache settings: Timeout 20 KeepAlive Off MaxKeepAliveRequests 0 KeepAliveTimeout 3 <IfModule mpm_prefork_module> StartServers 40 MinSpareServers 25 MaxSpareServers 40 ServerLimit 400 MaxClients 400 MaxRequestsPerChild 4 </IfModule> Can anyone advise on how to tweak the settings? Thanx! Edit: The config was gotten by trial and error. Any and I mean by a number, change to these lines make the load skyrocket in like 5 minutes. It literally jumps to like 200-300 in a matter of minutes. Especially MaxRequestsPerChild. I've tried with 10, 15, 100, 1000 and the load just skyrockets. About php - there are actually only a few php files which aren't really that expensive at all. They just spit some simple stuff out. If I turn on KeepAlive load also goes to space..
