  • Microsoft Access as a Weapon of War

    A while ago (probably a decade ago, actually) I saw a report on a tracking system maintained by a U.S. Army artillery control unit.  This system was capable of maintaining a bearing on various units in the field to help avoid friendly fire.  I consider the U.S. Army to be the most technologically advanced fighting force on Earth, but to my terror I saw something on the title bar of an application displayed on a laptop behind one of the soldiers they were interviewing: Tracking.mdb Oh yes.  Microsoft Office Suite had made it onto the battlefield.  My hope is that it was just running as a front-end for a more proficient database (no offense Access people), or that the soldier was tracking something else like KP duty or fantasy football scores.  But I could also see the corporate equivalent of a pointy-haired boss walking into a cube and asking someone who had piddled with Access to build a database for HR forms.  Except this pointy-haired boss would have been a general, the cube would have been a tank, and the HR forms would have been targets that, if something went amiss, would have been hit by a 500lb artillery round. Hope that solider could write a good query :)

  • Issues Deploying Functional WAR to Elastic Beanstalk with Tomcat7

    I am currently deploying OpenTripPlanner (http://github.com/OpenPlans/OpenTripPlanner.git) to Elastic Beanstalk. I'm able to successfully build and deploy opentripplanner with my own customized settings on an ec2. I have set it up so that the appropriate WAR file can be placed in the Tomcat/Webapps folder, and when Tomcat is started up, it will auto-deploy, and even download open trip planner's graph.obj from an S3. All of that works just fine, except when I try to deploy to Elastic Beanstalk. When I upload to Elastic Beanstalk, the log shows that my WAR file is successfully unpacked & successfully downloads the graph.obj from my S3. The only difference is that then nothing happens and I can't load the site in my browser. The health is RED, and I can't figure out what is going on. I've tried looking into ports and dns issues, but I can't determine what's wrong. Anyone have any ideas? Why would a WAR that works on tomcat7 outside of Beanstalk fail to be accessible?

  • Building the WAR with m2eclipse in combination with WTP (handling webResources)

    I have a situation where I have a web application that is built using maven (i.e., maven-war-plugin). For each code modification, we have had to manually launch maven and restart the application server. Now, to reduce build cycle overhead, I want to use WTP to publish the webapp. Now, we have resource processing with Maven, and there are some additional Maven tasks defined in our POM when building the webapp. Therefore m2eclipse seems like a natural solution. I have gotten far enough that the Maven builder is running these tasks and filtering resources correctly. However, when I choose "Run on Server", the WAR file does not look like it would if I built it in Maven. I am guessing that this is because WTP actually builds the WAR, and not the m2eclipse builder. So even though we have configured the maven-war-plugin in our POM, those settings are not used. Below is a snippet with our maven-war-plugin configuration. Often the changes within the war only affect jars and static content which account for maybe 2 - 3MB's. Is there some tooling I can integrate with my Ant script that can accurately detect the changes to the war and give me a smaller subset to upload?

  • How to update individual files in a war file

    Hi guys, I am doing some research in the way i can deploy an application efficiently using a war file. What i currently do is i deliver the war file everytime there is a release. This means everytime there is a change no matter how small the change is i have to build and deliver all files that make up the application. I am thinking that maybe this is not the correct way to do this. For example if there is a change to a css file i have to rebuild the war file which will include all file. This includes recompiling all *.java files as well. In the above example, is it possible to build a war file with just the css file and deploy it to the tomcat server and have Tomcat just replace the css file and leave everything else as is?

  • Define Servlet Context in WAR-File

    Hi, How can I tell e.g. Tomcat to use a specific context path when given my WAR-File? Example: I have a war file created by maven build and the resulting name of the file is rather long. So I do not want the tomcat manager application to use the filename of the war as the context. Supplying a context.xml in META-INF did not produce the desired results I also found this in the documentation for the path attribute of Context: The value of this field must not be set except when statically defining a Context in server.xml, as it will be inferred from the filenames used for either the .xml context file or the docBase. So it does not seem to be the right way to tell the application-server what the path for my WAR should be. Any more hints?

  • Ant deploy WAR file to tomcat server failure

    I am having a little trouble getting my deployment task in ant to function. I have a war file that is generated as part of the build process, and I am now trying to autodeploy that to my test server. In ant I have defined a deployment task as seen below. When I try to run it I get a file not found error on the server in the catalina.out log file. Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong that is causing this deploy to not function? I have checked the path, and it is correct and the WAR file exists.   • Grails | Deployment | Include .dll in war

    I have a sqljdbc_auth.dll file which I want to include in my war in order to enable Windows Authentication. I tried the following code: grails.war.copyToWebApp = { args -> fileset(dir:"web-app") { include(name: "jdbc/**") } } Where jdbc is the folder which contains my sqljdbc_auth.dll file. However, it doesn't work. The war doesn't include the dll. Please let me know if I am missing anything here. Thanks.

  • Converting WAR to EAR and other Glassfish stories

    Hello! I am really new in this so I hopefully don't make any terrible mistake. I apologize before hand if I have. In my project I was using tomcat and deploying WAR files. But now some bosses wants to deploy EAR files. So there we go. I first downloaded Glassfish (don't know if it's the apropiate application server for a newbie like me), instaled it and all (I even deployed the hello.war in the autodeploy _< ). Then prepared an EAR file. From what I know, I just need to create an Enterprise Application Project in Eclipse and add to the module my war file. This changes the application.xml file automatically (thanks eclipse project!). So I exported it to an EAR file and uploaded it to the glassfish server. Wonders of wonders, it doesn't work. I also tried deploying the old WAR file in this new shiny glassfish but it goes on http-404 not found error. The glassfish seems to say that my project is not in ~/domains/domain1/docroot. By the way I am using windows and I am aware of some problems between glassfish and windows due to some updating open files or such. So I have to questions: First, Am I doing the EAR package correctly? Second, Do I need to do some especial configuration to the glassfish server to deploy EAR and WAR files? Thanks!

  • How to open a EAR/WAR file in windows 7

    I have a few EAR/WAR files which are Java archives and I would like Windows 7 to open these files the way it opens a file with extension zip. So I open this war file and in the list of softwares available with "Open" I see MS Word, Notepad etc but nothing about CompressedFolderView. I also tried manually specifying the location of exe (I thought this was expand.exe) but that does not work. Does someone know if I can make this work? Or should I use Winzip or some such utilities?

  • Using Effect For Fog of War

    I'm trying to apply fog of war to areas on the screen not currently visible to the player. I do this by rendering the game content in one RenderTarget and the the fog of war into another, and then I merge them with an effect file that takes the color from the game RenderTarget and the alpha from the fog of war render target. The FOW RenderTarget is black where the FOW appears, and white where it doesn't. This does work, but it colors the fog of war (the unrevealed locations) white instead of the intended color of black. Before applying the effect I clear the backbuffer of the device to white. When I try to clear it to black, non of the fog of war appears at all, which I assume is a product of alpha blending with black. It works for all other colors, however - giving the resulting screen a tint of that color. How do I archieve a black fog while still being able to do alpha blending between the two render targets?   • Java: very slow tomcat and too big war file

    I created some sort of RESTful API backend for a mobile app. It's written completely in Java using Jersey as Framework. At the moment no database is used, it's all in the memory, but this is no problem so far (it's only for prototyping purposes). I ordered the smallest package from digital ocean and installed tomcat7. All in all tomcat works, but I have three major problems: 1) It takes a long time until tomcat deploys the app: I deploy it per tomcat manager and it takes about 2 minutes unit the site works (excl. war upload time). 2) The war files are quite big (16MB): I don't know why they are so big. There are no database dependencies and most logic is written in plain java. Okay, we are using jersey, but 16MB are a lot for the logic of a small webservice. 3) I have to restart tomcat all 3 days or so. It looks like a memory leak or something similar. If the app runs for a few days the response time is quite high and the server seems to be frozen. It works again, if I restart tomcat per ssh. You can find my mvn pom file right here. Do you have some tips? Are there good tomcat alternatives?

  • java web templates across multiple WAR files

    I have a multi WAR web application that was designed badly. There is a single WAR that is responsible for handling some authorization against a database and defines a standard web page using a jsp taglib. The main WAR basically checks the privileges of the user and than based on that, displays links to the context path of the other deployed WARS. Each of the other deployed WARs includes this custom tag lib. I am working on redesigning this application, and one of the nice things that I want to retain is that we have other project teams that have developed these WAR modules that "plug into" our current system to take advantage of other things we have to offer. I am not entirely sure how to handle the page templates though. I need a templating system that would be easy enough to use across multiple wars (I was thinking of jsp fragments??). I really only need to define a consistent header and main navigation section. Whatever else is displayed on the page is up to the individual web project. Any suggestions? I hope that this is clear, if not I can elaborate more.
