  • Why does update-notifier contains system-crash-notification?

    I just had "System Program Problem Detected" window appearing several times before user session even started (I have KDM with autologin to locked session). I traced it with xprop to being /usr/lib/update-notifier/system-crash-notification which is binary (while I expected it to be some script) and belongs to update-notifier package (while I expected it to be somewhere from apport*). P.S.     I have a slightly older laptop running Ubuntu 11.10. It runs fine, but frequently, when I start it up, the CPU monitor in my Gnome Panel shows 100% usage for for what can be up to five minutes or so. It seems that the offending process is update-apt-xapian-index, which, if I understand correctly, is the update manager checking for updates. I have gone into the update manager settings, and selected to never check for updates. I'll do that manually when I feel like I have the time to leave the laptop running for that. However, despite my selection, this still happens. Roughly 50% of the time or more, when I start my laptop, it runs update-apt-xapian-index. How can I get the update manager to respect my settings, or at least to get this process to stop eating my CPU cycles?

    While looking into some test failures, I've identified an curious issue with my update logic. This: game.update(100); Behaves slightly different from: for (int i = 0; i < 10; i++) game.update(10); The concrete example here is a rotating entity. It rotates by exactly 360 degrees in the first case, but only by about 352 in the second. This leads to slight variations in how things move, depending on the frame rate. Not enough to be noticeable in practice, but I did notice it when writing tests. Now my question is: Should this be fully deterministic, i.e. the outcome of update(1) * n should equal update(n) exactly? Or is it normal to have some variance and I should make my test assertions more generous?

  • Windows update doesn't list update details, only the number of updates

    Hi all, My system is Vista Business 32 bits SP2. When I click "Windows update", I can see there are 2 available optional updates. If I click the link "2 optional updates are available" to see what the updates are, I get: http://leodip.s3.amazonaws.com/windows%5Fupdate2.PNG The details about the updates are EMPTY. Any idea why this is happening? It doesn't happen only with optional updates, but with critical updates as well. I would like to fix this, so I can see what the updates are. Thanks!

  • Error when starting update-manager

    Yesterday evening I ran an update. Apparently the python3-update-manager got updated. However, since today I get an error message when I started the update manager within Unity. A report was sent as proposed. Running an update from within the terminal seems to work normally. Uninstalling and re-installing from the ubuntu software centre didn't solve the problem. I tried throughout synaptic where I removed all related packages (3) and re-installed them after a restart..but in vain so far. I'm quite new to linux and ran out of ideas.   • Why is Windows Update trying to install an update I don't need?

    I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about. Running the FixIt for the issue How to troubleshoot Windows Update or Microsoft Update when you are repeatedly offered an update does not resolve the issue. Neither with normal nor with aggressive settings.

    I'm currently using MongoDB to record application logs, and while I'm quite happy with both the performance and with being able to dump arbitrary structured data into log records, I'm troubled by the mutability of log records once stored. In a traditional database, I would structure the grants for my log tables such that the application user had INSERT and SELECT privileges, but not UPDATE or DELETE. Similarly, in CouchDB, I could write a update validator function that rejected all attempts to modify an existing document. However, I've been unable to find a way to restrict operations on a MongoDB database or collection beyond the three access levels (no access, read-only, "god mode") documented in the security topic on the MongoDB wiki. Has anyone else deployed MongoDB as a document store in a setting where immutability (or at least change tracking) for documents was a requirement? What tricks or techniques did you use to ensure that poorly-written or malicious application code could not modify or destroy existing log records? Do I need to wrap my MongoDB logging in a service layer that enforces the write-only policy, or can I use some combination of configuration, query hacking, and replication to ensure a consistent, audit-able record is maintained?

    We've got a file-based program we want to convert to use a document database, specifically MongoDB. Problem is, MongoDB is limited to 2GB on 32-bit machines (according to http://www.mongodb.org/display/DOCS/FAQ#FAQ-Whatarethe32bitlimitations%3F), and a lot of our users will have over 2GB of data. Is there a way to have MongoDB use more than one file somehow? I thought perhaps I could implement sharding on a single machine, meaning I'd run more than one mongod on the same machine and they'd somehow communicate. Could that work?

    Here is my usecase. 1.Have some data, which I am storing now in the xml files. The data that I am storing is not persistent i.e I would be deleting the user data once the user logs out. 2.My server communicates with the client using the XML requests and responses. So initially we decided, since we are sending the XML as response, lets store it in XML so that conversion from database to XML format time is saved. 3.Client will request for XML based on some filter conditions. So will have to use XQUERY. 4.Maximum of 100 entries will be there in an XML, atleast as of now. Now I would like to hear some advice on whether I should use XML or mongodb. My Concerns : 1. How good is it to store temporary data in mongodb and delete/take backup once done with session 2. Conversion from mongodb json format to XML. 3. Handling the changes in the schema design.   • MongoDB: ReplicaSet slower than a corresponding Master/Slave config

    Is it true that a mongoDB configured as a replicaset (lets say two nodes + an arbiter) will always be slower than the same DB and server specs but configured as a Master? I've run some tests and found out that for a fresh DB, RS is a little quicker than Master/Slave config but when the DB is getting bigger than ~100k records the latter is getting much snappier. am I missing something here? PS: I was testing it with mongoid driver for ruby.

  • Software Update Notifications

    I am considering implementing some sort of Software Update Notification for one of the web applications I am developing. There are several questions I came across: Should the update check be executed on the client or on the server? Client-side means, the software retrieves the most current version information, performs its checks, and displays the update information. Server-side check means the software sends its version info to the server, which in turn does the calculations and returns information to the client. My guess is that server-side implementation may turn out to be more flexible and more powerful than client-side, as I can add functionality to the server easily, as long as the client understands it. Where should the update info be displayed? Is it ok to display on the login screen? Should only admins see it? (this is a web app with a database, so updating requires manipulation of db and web, which is only done by admins). What about a little beeping flashing icon which increases in size as the version gets more obsolete every day ;) ? Privacy issues Not everybody likes to have their app usage stats broadcast over the internet. TheOnion question: What do you think?

    I'm trying to update my Ubuntu system, but cannot do anything with the Update Manager. It loads up 3/4 of the way and then says: Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:The package google-chrome-stable:i386 needs to be reinstalled, but I can't find an archive for it.' Also ubuntu software center will not open and keeps crashing. This is very annoying as I can't install or update anything.

  • How can I update Ubuntu if the update servers are blocked?

    I connect to the Internet through my college wifi and for some weird reason they have blocked all Ubuntu updates, so I cannot update Ubuntu through the common "Update Manager" way. So I was wondering if there was some other method to update Ubuntu, maybe manually download each package and then install them or download a DVD image which already has all the packages. I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed currently.

    I'm having an issue with update-manager. Last night, my computer restart suddenly during the update process. Now it won't open and it keep appearing on the notifier with a message warning that an error occurred. The error is the same that is displayed when I try to open it on the terminal: Error in sitecustomize; set PYTHONVERBOSE for traceback: EOFError: EOF read where not expected Traceback (most recent call last): File "/usr/bin/update-manager", line 26, in <module> from __future__ import print_function EOFError: EOF read where not expected I've already seen some questions here, but most of them are related to problems with ppas and the source.list file. This seems to be a bug on update-manager itself. I've already tried to remove it and install again, but the problem persists. I also noted another bug: my source-center doesn't open too.   • update manager - insufficient storage space (false alarm)

    I'm trying to run Update Manager but it keeps reporting that there's not enough space. Here's the screenshot: I ran sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade from the terminal but still update manager says that there are updates and I cannot seem to get pass this message. I have even removed many programs from my system and there is supposed to be at least 6GB of disk space free. What can I do?
