• SQLServer Replication, dealing with updating data in a subscriber without merging with the publisher

  To simplify my problem, picture two databases, one is a publisher, one is a replicated subscriber. Most of the time, changes are configured in the publisher, and pushed to the subscriber once per day using transactional replication. (The subscriber is the main production database). However, on a rare occasion, we need to make a change directly to the subscriber database. This does not break replication, however to ensure consistency, we also want to replicate this single change back to the publisher database. My first thought was to make both databases publishers to each other, but that does not work. Merge replication also does not work as that merges the data together, and we really only want to push that single change from the subscriber back to the publisher. Is there some other replication scheme I can use here, or do I need to invent my own thing?

• Filesystem synchronization library?

  Hi, I've got 10 GB of files to back up daily to another site. The client is way out in the country so bandwidth is an issue. Does anyone know of any existing software or libraries out there that help with keeping a folder with its files synchronized across a slow link, that is it only sends files across if they have changed? Some kind of hash checking would be nice, too, to at least confirm the two sides are the same. I don't mind paying some money for it, seeing as how it might take me several weeks to a month to implement something decent on my own. I just don't want to re-invent the wheel, here. BTW it is a windows shop (they have an in house windows IT guy) so windows is preferred. I also have 10 GB of SQL Server 2000 databases to go across. Is the SQL server replication mode reliable? • Inheriting from the web client class

  Hello, C# 2008 I am not sure how much work there is to inheriting from the web client class. Currently I am using it in my project. And I can't change to anything else. The customer would like to have a timeout after a certain period of time. The web client doesn't have this. So rather than re-invent the wheel, I am thinking of inheriting from the web client and adding this property. Do you think this is a suitable solution? Could it mean more work just to add this. • Integrating Jython Cpython

  I am about to begin a project where I will likely use PyQt or Pyside. I will need to interface with a buggy 3rd party piece of server software that provides C++ and Java APIs. The Java APIs are a lot easier to use because you get Exceptions where with the C++ libraries you get segfaults. Also, the Python bindings to the Java APIs are automatic with Jython whereas the Python bindings for the C++ APIs don't exist. So, how would a CPython PyQt client application be able to communicate with these Java APIs? How would you go about it? Would you have another separate Java process on the client that serializes / pickles objects and communicates with the PyQt process over a socket? I don't want to re-invent the wheel... is there some sort of standard interface for these types of things? Some technology I should look into? RPC, Corba, etc? Thanks, ~Eric

Keep the memory footprint reasonably low (do not create any new unnecessary objects), but do not get the app into an inconsistent state either. I appreciate your help.

  I'm building a REST interface to my application using ROA (Resource Oriented Architecture) . I'd like to give the client the ability to specify search parameters in URL. So a client could say "Give me all people who's: "first_name" is equal to "BOB" "age" is greater than "30" sort by "last_name" I was thinking something like: GET /PEOPLE/{query_parameters}/{sort_parameters} ...or perhaps GET /PEOPLE?query=<query_string>&sort=<sort_string> ...but I'm unsure what syntax would be good for specifying in the COLUMN_NAME-OPERATOR-VALUE triplicates. I was thinking perhaps something like: column_name.operator.value So the client could say: GET /PEOPLE?query=first_name.EQUALS.bob&query=age.GREATER_THAN.30&sort=last_name.ASCENDING I really don't want to re-invent the wheel here, are there some accepted ways that this is done? I am using Restlets, I don't know if that makes a difference.

• Is there a SQL Server error numbers C# wrapper anyone knows of?

  I really want to do something useful when a PK violation occurs but I hate trapping error numbers... they just don't read right without comments (they're certainly not self documenting). I know I can find all the potential error numbers at SQL Server books online but I really want to be able to pass the error number to some helper class or look it up against a Dictionary of some sort rather than have non-descript err numbers everywhere. Has anyone got / seen any code anywhere that encapsulates the SQL Server Error numbers in this way as I don't want to re-invent the wheel (or I'm lazy maybe).

  I'd like to use a URI scheme to enable the users of one of my apps to share geographic locations. I don't want to invent my own URI scheme and "geo" seems the most appropriate but there are only two Internet Drafts on the subject (draft-mayrhofer-geo-uri-01, draft-mayrhofer-geo-uri-02), both expired and wildly different in the way they approach the standard. Is there an URI that's suited for encoding latitude and longitude and that made it as an RFC? Should I use a generic URI such as the tag URI scheme?

• How stable or unstable is symfony 2.0 ?

  Well, I know it's a preview, and I know it says that it's not yet ready for production, and yet I dare ask the question. I need to start building a pretty big application, which is planned to go live at around sep-oct 2010. Lets say I will not release the application to production until the stable version of symfony 2.0 will be released - is it a good idea (well, I'll settle for a viable idea) for me to start building the application using the 2.0 version ? How big is the chance I will need to rewrite/replace code I've written due to core changes in the framework ? Thanks. Edit: the other option right now, is to use symfony 1.4. I have thought and tried Zend Framework, but I refuse to re-invent each and every module, which will cost me a lot of programming hours (if not days/weeks).

  1. I'm writing a chat based application on TCP communication. I'm using NetBeans and I want to add functionality to the default EXIT_ON_CLOSE when exiting JFrame. The reason of course is because I want to clean resources and end threads safely. How can I call a method that clear resources and only then close the JFrame safely and end the process. 2. I need to implement the server side. The server has List/HashMap/Queue of 'Socket' with their chat nick-names. I want my mobile apps to have the capability of checking for updates before starting and in case a new version is available, prompt the user to upgrade.   As I've found myself repeating myself a lot, writing very similar queries and classes for different entities (despite of doing strong object and relational normalisation), etc, I've came to an Idea that I could and should automate the most of this and write an engine which will compile simple declarative models I specify into all the code limiting my job to describe the task and and finally just customise the result as needed. As far as I know this is about metaprogramming and aspect-oriented programming. How do I get acquainted with modern tools available quickly so that I don't invent one more bicycle developing my own?

• Why AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent does not support name in the constructor?

  On .NET Framework 2.0 AutoResetEvent and ManualResetEvent inherit from EventWaitHandle. The EventWaitHandle class has 4 different constructors. 3 of the constructors support giving a name to the event. On the other hand both ManualResetEvent and AutoResetEvent do not support naming and provide a single constructor that receives the initialState. I can simply inherit from EventWaitHandle and write my own implementation of those classes that support all the constructor overloads, but I don't like to re-invent the wheel if I do not have to. My questions are: Is there a special problem in naming events? Do you have any idea why Microsoft did not support it?   I seem to remember Scala treating methods ending in _= specially, so something like this: object X { var x: Int = 0; def y_=(n : Int) { x = n }} X.y = 1 should call X.y_=(1). However, in 2.8.0 RC1, I get an error message: <console>:6: error: value y is not a member of object X X.y = 1 ^ Interestingly, just trying to call the method without parentheses fails as well: scala> X.y_= 1 <console>:1: error: ';' expected but integer literal found. X.y_= 1 ^ Am I misremembering something which does actually exist or did I just invent it out of whole cloth?

  I know I'll get into all kinds of trouble for bringing this up on SO, but considering that nearly all of us programmers depend on the Internet to get our jobs done, I really think it's worth looking into today's failure of our right to use the Internet by way of Lobbying ISPs. Although something tells me there will be retribution for the actions of the ISPs/tel cos/cable and their lobbyist since, lets face it...ISPs/Telcos didn't invent the Internet. I'm not going to be the one to do it, but um I think somebody already has...as everybody I talked to was having Internet connection problems today at work. Just thought this might be relevant to all of our jobs...in the U.S.A. at least. If you work at an Big evil ISPs, by all means...try and close this question.   Am I the only one bugged by the phrase "unmanaged c++"? I think the phrase is implicitly insulting, and is designed to be so. Stroustrup never wrote "The Design and Evolution of Unmanaged C++" and the not unmanaged C++ standards committee is not working on "UC++1x". Maybe I should disingeneously invent a suite of languages called "Faster" purely so I can refer to any language I want to implicitly denigrate with a "Slow" prefix. "Oh, youre using Slow CSharp? Shame!"

  Hi! Can someone please tell me a GUI framework (for Windows. doesn't need to be cross platform) that allows me to specify the design of the UI elements very precisely? For example, the Windows and UI elements of Adobe products look different than other Windows applications. I'm looking for a framework that would allow me to create a GUI in that style - or any other style I invent, from the shape of the window, to the visual appearance of any scrollbar, button minimize/maximize buttons and so on. any recommendations? • How to implement dual communication between server and client via http

  I have a AJAX client which must receive messages from server. Some messages from server not like request-response type. For example, imaging game in which players can enter. Server must send to client info about player entering. But how can server send message to client via http without request from client? Only decision that i can invent: client send request to server (getNewPlayerEnter request) with big timeout, server checks state of player set, if in set new players are, then server send info to client, if not server 'sleeps' on some time, and after 'sleeping' server checks players set again. I think my desicion a little stupid(maybe not little). How implement it right? p.s. sorry for my english

• How to see functions implemented in R packages

  How do I see the actual code for the functions implemented in R packaged. For instance I have loaded the caret package and I would like to see the code used for the function "createMultiFolds". I have gone to where the packages are stored but can't seem to find what I am looking for. For instance folders like Meta in the root folder of the caret package have files with the .rds extension which I can read into R with the gzfile command but I can't still seem to find what I am looking for i.e. the exact for the functions e.g. creatMultifolds. I would like to adapt some of these functions specifically to my research needs by make small changes to the codes to output the results in the way that I want without having to "re-invent the wheel" I will be glad if someone can help me. So you try to invent an encryption, one-to-one map, where you write only a key to a paper, only numbers, and leave the rest junk to your server. Of course, the password can consist of arbitrary things. Implemention should work like hel34/hjal0#@ ---- magic ----> 3442 and to other way: 3442 ---- server magic ---> hel34/hjal0#@ [Update] mvds has the correct idea, to change the base, how would you implement it?

• The Wheel Invention - Beneficial For Learning?

  Hello, Chris Coyier of css-tricks.com has written a good article titled Regarding Wheel Invention. In a paragraph he says: On the “reinventing” side, you benefit from complete control and learning from the process. And on the very next line he says: On the other side, you benefit from speed, reliability, and familiarity. Also often at odds are time spent and cost. He is right in both statements I think. I really like his first statement. I do actually sometimes re-invent the wheel to learn more and gain complete control over what I am inventing. I wonder why people are so much against that or rather biased. Isn't there the benefit of learning and getting complete control or probably some other benefits too. I would love to see what you have to say about this.

• How can I determine what text on a webpage will render the largest?

  I'd like to write a function (ideally in PHP) where I can input a url and return a string corresponding to the hypertext from that webpage which would render the largest in a browser (any standard browser is fine). Getting the webpage and tokenizing things with DOM is pretty straightforward, but what's the best way to calculate ultimate size of the rendered text tokens - how do you account for CSS that includes px, em, % etc. for different font sizes. Anyone done something like this before I go and re-invent the wheel? Thanks in advance.

• ASP.NET Web API - Screencast series Part 2: Getting Data

  We're continuing a six part series on ASP.NET Web API that accompanies the getting started screencast series. This is an introductory screencast series that walks through from File / New Project to some more advanced scenarios like Custom Validation and Authorization. The screencast videos are all short (3-5 minutes) and the sample code for the series is both available for download and browsable online. I did the screencasts, but the samples were written by the ASP.NET Web API team. In Part 1 we looked at what ASP.NET Web API is, why you'd care, did the File / New Project thing, and did some basic HTTP testing using browser F12 developer tools. This second screencast starts to build out the Comments example - a JSON API that's accessed via jQuery. This sample uses a simple in-memory repository. At this early stage, the GET /api/values/ just returns an IEnumerable<Comment>. In part 4 we'll add on paging and filtering, and it gets more interesting.   The get by id (e.g. GET /api/values/5) case is a little more interesting. The method just returns a Comment if the Comment ID is valid, but if it's not found we throw an HttpResponseException with the correct HTTP status code (HTTP 404 Not Found). This is an important thing to get - HTTP defines common response status codes, so there's no need to implement any custom messaging here - we tell the requestor that the resource the requested wasn't there.  public Comment GetComment(int id) { Comment comment; if (!repository.TryGet(id, out comment)) throw new HttpResponseException(HttpStatusCode.NotFound); return comment; } This is great because it's standard, and any client should know how to handle it. There's no need to invent custom messaging here, and we can talk to any client that understands HTTP - not just jQuery, and not just browsers. But it's crazy easy to consume an HTTP API that returns JSON via jQuery. The example uses Knockout to bind the JSON values to HTML elements, but the thing to notice is that calling into this /api/coments is really simple, and the return from the $.get() method is just JSON data, which is really easy to work with in JavaScript (since JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation and is the native serialization format in Javascript). $(function() { $("#getComments").click(function () { // We're using a Knockout model. • Softpedia published some of my open source projects — how to react?

  (FYI: I've just moved this question over from Stackoverflow on recommendation.) I just received a few emails, informing me that softpedia.com has added some of my "products" to their "database of scripts, code snippets and web applications". My products are in this case some smaller open source projects, which I have hosted and published on github. Now I'm wondering how to react to this. This site is indirectly making money of my free work through ads on three pages before the actual download. They also seem to "invent" version numbers and I can't find out if they're hosting the latest or all versions of my projects. — I can see how this could lead to problems in the future, since I don't control what's "the latest" everywhere. On the other hand I don't mind some extra publicity. I want as many people as possible to know about the projects, use them, fork them and hopefully improve them. The projects in questions are really fairly small, but this might not be the case in the future for me and/or other people reading this question. I'm sure that this must have happened to others around here. What's your opinion? Should I try to get the downloads removed? Update 1 I've requested the removal and mentioned that I don't feel that Softpedia can provide the right environment for this kind of project. Their team got back to me instantly with a friendly email saying, that they'll remove the links for now: If you are worried that your projects won't be updated, then I must tell you that I have them bookmarked in my RSS reader, so any version changes will be forwarded to me when needed. So I promise I'll keep your script up to date as soon as I see an update in the repository. I have to say, that I appreciate this kind of reaction quite a lot and so I sent them another email, describing in more detail what I'm worried about and what bothers me. I also stated, that I'm aware that my license clearly permits them to host the projects in any case, but that I'd be even happy if they would host the projects as long as they could convince me of a few details and maybe make some small changes to the way the projects are represented. — Let's see where this goes. Update 2 After discussing with their contact and requesting some changes regarding display of version (they had given the possibility to do so) and authorship they put the projects back up on their site. All in all a positive and definitely interesting experience.

• Solaris 11

  Oracle has a strict policy about not discussing product features until they appear in shipping product. Now that Solaris 11 is publically available, it is time to catch up. I will be shortly posting articles on a variety of new developments in the Solaris linkers and related bits: 64-bit Archives After 40+ years of Unix, the archive file format has run out of room. The ar and link-editor (ld) commands have been enhanced to allow archives to grow past their previous 32-bit limits. Guidance The link-editor is now willing and able to tell you how to alter your link lines in order to build better objects. Stub Objects This is one of the bigger projects I've undertaken since joining the Solaris group. Stub objects are shared objects, built entirely from mapfiles, that supply the same linking interface as the real object, while containing no code or data. You can link to them, but cannot use them at runtime. It was pretty simple to add this ability to the link-editor, but the changes to the OSnet in order to apply them to building Solaris were massive. I discuss how we came to invent stub objects, how we apply them to build the OSnet in a more parallel and scalable manner, and about the follow on opportunities that have emerged from the new stub proto area we created to hold them. The elffile Utility A new standard Solaris utility, elffile is a variant of the file utility, focused exclusively on linker related files. elffile is of particular value for examining archives, as it allows you to find out what is inside them without having to first extract the archive members into temporary files. This release has been a long time coming. I joined the Solaris group in late 2005, and this will be my first FCS. From a user perspective, Solaris 11 is probably the biggest change to Solaris since Solaris 2.0. Solaris 11 polishes the ground breaking features from Solaris 10 (DTrace, FMA, ZFS, Zones), and uses them to add a powerful new packaging system, numerous other enhacements and features, along with a huge modernization effort. I'm excited to see it go out into the world. I hope you enjoy using it as much as we did creating it. Software is never done. On to the next one...
