I was just wondering if there are any existing group & individual appraisal metrics used so I don't have to reinvent the wheel... EDIT This is by no means correct but something like: Individual Contribution (IC) = time spent (individual) / time spent (total) = Performance = ? (should use individual contribution (IC) combined with something to gain a measure of overall performance).... Maybe I am talking complete hash and I know generally its really difficult to analyse performance with numbers but any mathematicians out there that can lend a hand or know a somewhat more accurate method of analysing performance than arbitrary marking (e.g. 8 out 10)

• SEO effects of intermix of WP blog, custom PHP site and FB app game

  We're a melbourne tech company in the process of building a custom site in PHP. We plan to launch a "pre-launch" page which is also custom coded (CSS3 on twitter bootstrap framework + HTML5 front end and PHP back end). On that site will be a link to a blog - the idea behind this is to build up ranking for a variety of relevant keywords prior to the full site going live (given the majority of the site is a member only community anyway so the blog is really the main way we'll be able to execute on-site SEO. Ideally, we would like to install wordpress in a subdirectory on our servers and just customise the header to look the same as the landing page of the website. But some questions and concerns... Is there any detrimental effect on SEO efforts in having two separate systems (one custom PHP, the other an installation of wordpress) to manage the blog vs the rest of the site? Are there any benefits or detriments to installing on a sub domain such as blog.sitename.com vs. sitename.com/blog. My preference would be sitename.com/blog as it feels neater - but open to suggestions based on knowledge of Google preferences. Separately, we are building a Facebook app which is under another site name. Again because we are launching this app first, from an SEO perspective, would it actually be better to run it from a sub domain on the main site - e.g. gamename.mainsitename.com instead of on app.gamename.com? Currently we have it on app.gamename.com, but if there are SEO benefits to moving it to the other domain and server then we'll do it. Basically we don't want to have our SEO efforts divided - will Google algorithms prefer two sites heavily referring traffic, or is it better to focus our efforts on one. I guess that's the crux of the issue. But the other one is - does Google care about traffic accessing a page built for the Facebook app iFrame - does that count toward rankings? Sorry I hope these questions aren't too complex - but we're in the tech world every day and still can't seem to find a good answer to these ones...hence I'm taking to the forums!! • Software Architecture verses Software Design

  Recently, I was asked what the differences between software architecture and software design are. At a very superficial level both architecture and design seem to mean relatively the same thing. However, if we examine both of these terms further we will find that they are in fact very different due to the level of details they encompass. Software Architecture can be defined as the essence of an application because it deals with high level concepts that do not include any details as to how they will be implemented. To me this gives stakeholders a view of a system or application as if someone was viewing the earth from outer space. At this distance only very basic elements of the earth can be detected like land, weather and water. As the viewer comes closer to earth the details in this view start to become more defined. Details about the earth’s surface will start to actually take form as well as mane made structures will be detected. The process of transitioning a view from outer space to inside our earth’s atmosphere is similar to how an architectural concept is transformed to an architectural design. From this vantage point stakeholders can start to see buildings and other structures as if they were looking out of a small plane window. This distance is still high enough to see a large area of the earth’s surface while still being able to see some details about the surface. This viewing point is very similar to the actual design process of an application in that it takes the very high level architectural concept or concepts and applies concrete design details to form a software design that encompasses the actual implementation details in the form of responsibilities and functions. Examples of these details include: interfaces, components, data, and connections. In review, software architecture deals with high level concepts without regard to any implementation details. Software design on the other hand takes high level concepts and applies concrete details so that software can be implemented. As part of the transition between software architecture to the creation of software design an evaluation on the architecture is recommended. There are several benefits to including this step as part of the transition process. It allows for projects to ensure that they are on the correct path as to meeting the stakeholder’s requirement goals, identifies possible cost savings and can be used to find missing or nonspecific requirements that cause ambiguity in a design. In the book “Evaluating Software Architectures: Methods and Case Studies”, they define key benefits to adding an architectural review process to ensure that an architecture is ready to move on to the design phase. Benefits to evaluating software architecture: Gathers all stakeholders to communicate about the project Goals are clearly defined in regards to the creation or validation of specific requirements Goals are prioritized so that when conflicts occur decisions will be made based on goal priority Defines a clear expectation of the architecture so that all stakeholders have a keen understanding of the project Ensures high quality documentation of the architecture Enables discoveries of architectural reuse  Increases the quality of architecture practices. I can remember a few projects that I worked on that could have really used an architectural review prior to being passed on to developers. This project was to create some new advertising space on the company’s website in order to sell space based on the location and some other criteria. I was one of the developer selected to lead this project and I was given a high level design concept and a long list of ever changing requirements due to the fact that sales department had no clear direction as to what exactly the project was going to do or how they were going to bill the clients once they actually agreed to purchase the Ad space. In my personal opinion IT should have pushed back to have the requirements further articulated instead of forcing programmers to code blindly attempting to build such an ambiguous project.  Unfortunately, we had to suffer with this project for about 4 months when it should have only taken 1.5 to complete due to the constantly changing and unclear requirements.   When I open software from menu, it says "cannot open software database. Please reinstall the software-center package. • Share Mulitple Classes as one dll or a lib with Mulitple Projects

  Currently I have some shared class files(.cpp and .h) which I include them in around 20 Projects. Currently I have to include them in all of the projects. So if I get some business requirments and I change some of the shared(.cpp or .h) files I have to include them in all the 20 Projects which is kind of tedious. Is there a way where I can create a shared dll or library and include it all of my Projects. So if I have to change it, I just have to change it once and then just Add Reference to include that dll or library which contains all the shared(.cpp, .h) files. Any help/recommendations regarding the same, will be highly appreciated. I am using VS2012 for VC++.

• Impact on SEO of adding categories/tags in front of the HTML title [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: Does the order of keywords matter in a page title? All StackExchange sites add the most-used tag of a question in front of the HTML title for SEO purposes. On Stackoverflow for example this is usually the programming language, so you end up with a title like python - How do I do X? This has obviously an enourmous benefit on SEO as the programming language is an extremely important keyword that is very often omitted from the title. Now, my question is for the cases where the tag isn't an important keyword missing from the title, but just a category. So on Biology.SE for example one would have questions like biochemistry - How does protein X interact with Y? or on Skeptics medical science - Do vaccines cause autism? Those tags are usually not part of the search terms, they serve to categorize the content but users don't use those tags in their searches. How harmful is adding tags that are not used in searches in terms of SEO? Is there any hard data on the impact this practise might have on SEO? The negative aspects I can imagine, but have no data to show that it is actually a problem are: I heard that search engines dislike keyword stuffing and this might trigger some defense mechanisms against that It's a practise associated with less reputable sites, a keyword in front that doesn't fit the actual title well might look suspicious to some users. It wastes precious space in the title shown in search results.

One of the most basic SEO techiniques is including accurate description below 64 characters in the tags of each page. I was wondering if is considered ethical SEO to set up the contents based on a search keyword for example. So if the user searches for 'apples pictures' for example, then the title of the webpage would be 'apple pictures'. Note that the search keywords accurately describe my website contents because the title will always relate to the body of the webpage and 85-90% of the terms searched for will return corresponding results. Is this considered a good seo practice and is it ethical? Also, can someone explain what the idea is behind "linking"? I read somewhere that it is a good seo practice to link other websites and it is good when other websites link you. Does this mean that I should include as many links to other websites as possible (that are somehow relevant to my websites goal), also if I joined forums/services and posted my website url in the signature, would that still be considered other websites linking me?

• SEO questions about PR, Page Structure, and Other

  A couple of basic questions related to SEO. 1) If I have a site that has several different niches that I am trying to promote from. Example Web Developer broke down into section of Web Design, Graphic Design, Programming, Software for SEO purposes, would it be better to use subdomains for these main sections or use the main domain with a folder like structure? 2) Is PR different for each page of a domain or ever page has a PR of the same on that domain? Also do sub-domains have a different PR? 3) When entering a hugely over saturated niche such as web-design, is it even possible to compete with the big sites that have been ranked on google #1 page for years? 4) Lastly, I have read about how important titles, link anchors, and headings are for SEO and how content is the most important. So left's say we are building a standard header, body, sidebar, footer page. In the the actual markup, would it be better to make sure the main content comes before the sidebar on the page or does this probably not make a difference? 5) I seen mentioned in another answer here that microformats can help with SEO, is there any fact behind this?   I installed the MATE desktop using this manual but now i can't open my Ubuntu Software Center and can't open the settings from the update manager.   It all started from here. I have been following Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art (Best Practices (Microsoft)). The third chapter says that in Software Management: You cannot give too much time to software developers, if you give it to them, then it is likely that extra time given to them will be filled by some other tasks (in other words, the developers will eat that time :)) Parkinson's Law You can also not squeeze the time from their schedule because if you do that, it is likely that they will develop poor quality product, poor design and will hurt you in the long run, there will be a panic situation and total chaos in the project, lots of rework etc. My question is related to the first point. If you don't give enough time then will the typical software engineer learn his/her skills? The market is always coming with new technologies, you need to learn them. Even with the existing familiar technologies there are always best practices and dos and don'ts.

  i have already mastered the skills of building a page to comply with SEO requirements. What i want to do is customize the URL based parameters for best SEO & PR.   I would like to know that, does iframe affect the SEO of its parent page (the page contains iframe)? I've done some searching, such as Do we still need to avoid using frame/iframe for good SEO? and Using iFrame: SEO and Accessibility Points, which tell me that: The content in an iframe is not considered part of the parent page. The page within an iframe may be spidered and indexed (or it may be not) but no PR is definitely passed. But these are the content in the iframe, what about the parent page? Does the PageRank of the parent page will decrease because the iframe? Or maybe Googlebot wouldn't crawl the parent page? Or is the parent page not affected at all?

  I have seen a couple of site which has high number of hits. They are mostly tutorial sites and blogs that address software issue/errors. I wonder if the kewybord "blog" has a very positive effect in SEO? In my own site, I have install word press in root folder to avoid any blog keyword. I also did this to keep urls shallow (deeper url are not good for SEO). But I may want to think on it again. The sites I am referring too are http://blog.sqlauthority.com http://veerasundar.com/blog/2011/11/making-xampp-to-serve-any-directory-outside-htdocs/ I know there are standard (sort of) class names or ID that identify different contents and makes it easier for the search engine to identify contents like, "container", "menu". The use of word "blog" would mean this is about dicussing/tutoring something and have a very positive effect on SEO?

• Best S.E.O. practice for backlinking etc

  I'm currently working on a website that I am really looking to optimise in terms of search engines, i've been submitting between 5-20 directory submissions daily, i've validated and optimised my code and i've joined a lot of forums etc to speak of the website in question, however, I don't seem to be making much of an impact in terms of Google. I know that S.E.O. takes a while to start making an impact, and that Google prefers sites that a regularly updated and aged, but are there any more practices that can really help with organic results in Search engines. I have looked on Google itself, and a few other SE's but nobody is willing to talk about extensive S.E.O. practices as they normally don't want people knowing their formula's for S.E.O., also does anyone know of a decent piece of software that really looks into the in's and out's of your page and provides feedback, I usually use http://www.woorank.com, but only using one program doesn't show if it's exactly correct in what it's saying. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated, thank you very much.
