    How do I set the global transaction isolation level for a postgres data source. I'm running on jboss and I'm using hibernate to connect. I know that I can set the isolation level from hibernate, does this work for Postgres? This would be by setting the hibernate.connection.isolation hibernate property to 1,2,4,8 - the various values of the relevant static fields. I'm using the org.postgresql.xa.PGXADataSource

  • NetBackup with VSS and Instant Recovery - Failing to delete old snapshots

    We are attempting to implement Microsoft VSS for snap-shotting in our NetBackup 6.5.3.1 environment. The clients are both 32 & 64 bit Windows 2003 Server. Snapshot parameters are: Instant recovery is enabled Maximum snapshots = 1 Provider type = 1 (System) Snapshot attribute = 1 (Differential) All backups successfully complete, and VSS shadows are successfully created both for the snapshot backup and for the open files (shadow copy components). The Issue: NetBackup is not clearing or overwriting old snapshots with each successive backup. When we list shadows, and shadow storage, it is increasing and increasing. IT is not honouring the Maximum Snapshot setting. The Logs: The bpfis log doesn’t really appear to show any errors other than for methods which we are not employing (VxVM, Flashsnap, etc.).   • Which isolation level should I use for the following insert-if-not-present transaction?

    I've written a linq-to-sql program that essentially performs an ETL task, and I've noticed many places where parallelization will improve its performance. However, I'm concerned about preventing uniquness constraint violations when two threads perform the following task (psuedo code). Record CreateRecord(string recordText) { using (MyDataContext database = GetDatabase()) { Record existingRecord = database.MyTable.FirstOrDefault(record.KeyPredicate()); if(existingRecord == null) { existingRecord = CreateRecord(recordText); database.MyTable.InsertOnSubmit(existingRecord); } database.SubmitChanges(); return existingRecord; } } In general, this code executes a SELECT statement to test for record existance, followed by an INSERT statement if the record doesn't exist. It is encapsulated by an implicit transaction. When two threads run this code for the same instance of recordText, I want to prevent them from simultaneously determining that the record doesn't exist, thereby both attempting to create the same record. An isolation level and explicit transaction will work well, except I'm not certain which isolation level I should use -- Serializable should work, but seems too strict. Is there a better choice?

  • Get cryptic error when trying to create a snapshot of any of my VMs

    I'm using Oracle VM VirtualBox. I have 6 VMs that I've imported. When I click on an individual VM, and then click the camera image (or Ctrl+Shift+S) to take a snapshot, the snapshot process fails and VirtualBox gives the following error: Failed to create a snapshot of the virtual machine vmName. Details: Result Code: VBOX_E_IPRT_ERROR (0x80BB0005) This happens not only for one of my VMs, but all of them, if I try to take a snapshot of each one separately, one at a time. My computer is a Windows 7 machine. I have 200 GB free on my hard drive, and I see no reason why the error should occur. I can import VMs, run them, and clone then without any problems. Can anyone tell me what to do to fix the issue?

I understand the need of isolation frameworks like moq, rhinomocks and like to create a mock object. As mocks, participate in actual verfication of expectations. But why do we need these frameworks to create stubs. I would rather prefer rolling out a hand created stub and use it in various fixtures.

  • Running multiple sites on a LAMP with secure isolation

    Hi everybody, I have been administering a few LAMP servers with 2-5 sites on each of them. These are basically owned by the same user/client so there are no security issues except from attacks through vulnerable deamons or scripts. I am builing my own server and would like to start hosting multiple sites. My first concern is... ISOLATION. How can I avoid that a c99 script could deface all the virtual hosts? Also, should I prevent that c99 to be able to write/read the other sites' directories? (It is easy to "cat" a config.php from another site and then get into the mysql database) My server is a VPS with 512M burstable to 1G. Among the free hosting managers, is there any small one which works for my VPS? (which maybe is compatible with the security approach I would like to have) Currently I am not planning to host over 10 sites but I would not accept that a client/hacker could navigate into unwanted directories or, worse, run malicious scripts. FTP management would be fine. I don't want to complicate things with SSH isolation. What is the best practice in this case? Basically, what do hosting companies do to sleep well? :) Thanks very much!   • Setting "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" does not persist in IIS 6

    Our IIS server was recently patched with the latest Microsoft Security Updates and since then, I am unable to enable the "Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode" setting. This setting was enabled prior to patching and somehow changed during the updates. I have tried both using the IIS Manager console and the adsutil.vbs approach to change it. Either way, after resetting IIS for the change to take effect, when I go to verify that the isolation mode setting is enabled (true) I find that is reverts back to being disabled (false). Now... The patches have already been rolled back, however the setting still does not persist when I enable it. While I am trying to research the patches that were applied to see if there is a known issue (or perhaps a change in this setting's behavior) I was hoping someone else might have come across the same problem.     Hi, We have a web application that creates a dynamic PHP page with all the MySQL stored details a user has entered via a number a forms. So far so good, but we want this information stored some how to be refereed to at a later date, as an administrator can make changes to the data, which reflects on calculations that are worked out from this saved data. When going back over this saved data we need to be able to see all the information submitted for that particular calculation, so if that data has changed we will see what is was relating to that calculation. Now we have thought about maybe a snapshot when the calculation is done, pdf of the webpage or something similar would do, but is this simple to do? I hope this makes sense...

    My question is for a network with a Linux iptables router gateway. How can it be possible to prevent inter-network traffic of those users. Think this case as a public network, IPs are distributed through linux gw and users are authenticated thru the gateway. We want to protect public users from public users. Network is not wireless and I can not use Wireless AP user isolation. Actually I have a simple method. Subnet the network into /30 mask. Give minimum IP of each subnet to the gateay and ditribute those /30 IPs from the subnet. But this is pretty costly for such an aim. I want to ask for other methods Thanks.

  • MSSQL 2005 Snapshot Agent Uses 100% CPU

    When setting up a new subscription to a publication (transactional replication) from 64-bit SQL Server 2005 to 64-bit SQL Server 2005 the Snapshot Agent on the publisher consumes 100% of the CPU. I am using SSMS to create the new subscription. My initial impression is that this could be from row locking occurring during the generation of the snapshot but I have read that a concurrent snapshot is generated by default in SQL Server 2005, and that row locking shouldn't be a concern. As this is a production server I would like to be able to initialize replication without bringing the box to it's knees. Any suggestions would be helpful and appreciated.

My quesion is, what size does the snapshot needs to be? Atleast the same as the volume in question or can it be a lot smaller and will only the changes be saved into it?

  • Sharing VirtualBox snapshots

    Is it possible to "share" a VirtualBox snapshot? I have a "baseline" VirtualBox machine, and I would like to be able to take a snapshot, and send it to another user which has the same baseline machine. The scenario is that the baseline machine is used for testing, and I want to allow testers to create snapshots which describe a certain system state, and send that snapshot to developers to further examination. EDIT: To clarify, I would like to be able to export snapshots "incrementally" without having to export the entire machine as an appliance.

I have SCVMM linked to the host and thats working good, and have configured the scvmm on the lab management tab on TFS.     I have an Ubuntu guest installed on a raw HDD (entire disk, not a partition). It runs just fine under WinXP. In addition, I was able to boot directly into it (using the BIOS boot-device selector). At some point, I have created a snapshot of the VM. I have made some changes since then. Today, after a long time, I tried booting into the "VM" disk. It worked, but all the data there is pre-snapshot (or, rather, frozen at the snapshot). Can I somehow merge the changes since I took the snapshot into the physical state?
