  • Is there a performance difference between Windows 7 on SSD installed from scratch versus it using a recent ghost/clone drive image from a harddisk?

    - by therobyouknow
I'm planning to upgrade a notebook PC to a Solid-State Flash Drive (SSD) soon. I want to use the notebook before that and am considering installing Windows 7 on the hard disk (spinning variety, 5400rpm) before I get the SSD. To save time I am wondering if I can ghost/clone the installation of Windows 7 from the hard drive and put on the SSD. Would the performance of this clone from the harddisk onto the SSD be different from starting again and reinstalling Windows 7 from scratch on the SSD? (Windows 7 32bit professional)

  • POV Christmas Tree Is a Holiday-Themed DIY Electronics Project

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
If you’re looking for an electronics project with a bit of holiday cheer, this clever POV Christmas tree combines LEDs, motors, and a simple vision hack to create a glowing Christmas tree. POV (or Persistence Of Vision) hacks rely on your visual circuit’s lag time. By taking advantage of that lag POV displays can create the illusion of shapes and words where there are none. In the case of this Christmas tree hack a spinning set of LED lights creates the illusion of a Christmas tree when, in reality, there is just a few LEDs suspended in space by wire. It’s not a beginner level project by any means but it is a great way to practice surface mounting electronics and polish up your PCB making skills. Hit up the link below for the full tutorial. • 3D Dice using Maya - for integration with iOS game app

    - by Anil
My designer is building a 3D design of a dice using Maya. I want to integrate this in my iOS app so that the user can spin the dice and get a number. Then they play the game using that number. So, I have two questions: 1) How can I make the dice spin and stop at a random position so that a number is presented to the user? and 2) Once it stops spinning how can I detect the number that is displayed to the user (programmatically)? Many thanks. -Anil

  • CPU fan kicks in to full gear when i try to install ubuntu 12.10 or LTS

    - by Remi cook
Whenever I try to install (DUAL BOOT WITH WINDOWS 7) both versions of Ubuntu desktop on my PC the CPU fan starts spinning so fast that I couldn't even go through the installation for fear of my CPU exploding. In windows 7, the temp reaches 25-30 idle and 30-45 under full load. I tried installing through Wubi and by burning it to USB drive. Both wield the same results. I would appreciate any help. I'm a complete noob so take it easy one me. Intel Core i5 2500 @ 3.30GHz 4.00 GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (9-9-9-24) Motherboard ASUSTeK Computer INC. • ASUS Q500A will not boot from live DVD

    - by Sly
I just purchased a new PC yesterday, an ASUS Q500A. I downloaded Ubuntu 12.10, burned it to a DVD, and tried to install it. As expected, I came to a screen that asked if I wanted to try, install, OEM install, or check the disc. After going to try, the DVD spins up as if it's about to boot the system and then immediately spins down again to leave a black screen. I've tried several boot options: noacpi nolacpi acpi=off Removing quiet splash -- nolacpi results in the DVD drive not spinning up at all. The rest have no effect. Some stats about the system: Intel i5-3210M processor Intel Integrated Graphics 4000 Any tips on other things to try?

  • Fan running constantly on a Dell D420 laptop

    - by Halik
I'm running latest Ubuntu 12.04 beta on a Dell D420 laptop. The fan is spinning almost constantly - even after turning the PC off, letting it cool down, and then turning it back on, the fan will turn on after some idle time. Not to mention any CPU work. The CPU temps are normal, in range of 50-55 idle, and up to 70 with some load. It wouldn't be an issue, but the same PC running Fedora, or Arch Linux, had a much more modest fan profile - the temps were managed while you seldom heard the fan. To counter the problem, I currently use i8k tools, set manual temperature thresholds which seemed to have worked, but the i8kmon has a tendency to cycle the fan between lower and higher state within aboutin a second intervals - which is extremely annoying. As far as I can tell I did not run any special software (beside laptop-mode-tools), or any additional kernel modules when running Arch Linux and I can't tell about Fedora.

  • How to avoid HDD spin up at system start? (Ubuntu from SSD)

    - by Oliver
Thanks to hdparm -B1 /dev/sdb my HDD does no longer spin up when powered up on boot. But after completing the BIOS POST messages and starting Ubuntu the HDD gets a signal over the SATA data cable and spins up. Leaving the data cable (but still with plugged in SATA power cable) let the system boot up completely from my SSD without spinning up the HDD. What causes the HDD to spin up? Maybe Grub2? Edit: nope, doesn't seem to be Grub2 that spins up the drive. I just set up Grub to show its menu without timer. Nothings happens until I hit the Ubuntu standard boot option, then a few seconds later the drive spins up.

  • What You Said: Your Tech Spring Cleaning Routines

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
Earlier this week we asked you to share your tech spring cleaning routine; now we’re back to highlight your tips, tricks, and techniques. What tools rule the spring cleaning roost? Compressed air and microfiber cloths are the tools of choice by a wide margin. D^Angelo highlights the software and physicals tools he uses: Backup all the important stuff just to be safe (c:/, my documents, desktop, drivers) Cleaning the dust with some office depot compressed air, avoiding spinning the fans. Use a brush for that small places (fans, memory, capacitors, etc). Use some dielectric spray on the motherboard. If the pc turned on without problems its time to use ccleaner, Check if there is a toolbar installed or another unusual software that I don’t want. Run my antivirus software or malwarebytes; some defraggler maybe. • Cocos2d and Body with few collision shapes using chipmunk

    - by Eimantas
I'm using Cocos2d (0.99.5) with chipmunk physics engine. Currently I'm trying to place a body into space which is combined from few circle shapes. Let's say I have a corresponding sprite image with displays atom (nucleus + 3 electrons around it. Something like this without orbit lines). In it's simplest form - only one circle shape at the center should be enough which would detect collisions from other objects with nucleus. Now I'd like to add other circle shapes for each electron. How can I do that? Now when I add those shapes to the body and add the body into chipmunk space - the shapes (together with the body/sprite) start flickering and spinning with no recognizable pattern (or reason for that matter).

  • Crashing/freezing problems with an Aspire One 722

    - by tim
After several annoying points with installing ubuntu 11.10 on my acer aspire one 722 i finally made this run. After installing i had freeze issues and solved them by putting network boot on first priority on the bios. Yesterday all worked fine, no problems with wlan etc. But today all is crashing down. Atm iam at the university and tried to log into the public wlan. With that came : i cannot shut down, terminal is not working, very slow perfomance, some apps are starting like libre office, some not like system manager, buttons are not reacting, wlan symbol is spinning all the time. Any suggestions i can do?

  • SAT and then what?

    - by Marek
I am on my way to make another Arkanoid game but this time I decided that I want it a little bit more realistic than just checking intersections between AABB and inverting one vector's component on collision. So I found SAT but I don't know how can I change direction of the ball in realistic matter. Maybe I'm wrong but it seems like knowing MTV doesn't give me much. So my question is what algorithms should I use to make it realistic? I also care about possibility of spinning ball with a pallet. I don't know how to do it exactly but I guess I will need to consider acceleration of the pallet.

  • After suspend, my monitor wont turn back on

    - by David
I set my pc to suspend after 5 minutes of inactivity, when I return to my computer I mash a couple of keys and the pc turns back on and the drives start spinning etc etc, but I get no signal to either of my monitors. My peripherals are powered as the num/caps lock lights turn on and off. I should add I have two monitors, I have the same problem on both. As I am writing the last line from my previous paragraph keeps disappearing. I press control z and it comes back but kinda weird. Thanks in advance for any help :)

  • Ever wonder why Earth spins?

    - by Gopinath
Have you ever wonder why Earth spins on its axis and completes a revolution every day? Is there any force that keeps Earth spinning? Is that because of  Gravity or any Magnetic force? Check out this video to learn why Earth spins and the basics of physics behind the magic If you find that above video is in simple English and it’s not convincing physicist inside you, lets hear from a NASA scientist in the embedded video. A NASA scientist explains how Earth rotation has started, how fast it was billions of years ago and what caused it to slow down to 24 hours to complete a revolution   Thanks @pinaldev

  • Unity Search Not Working

    - by greggory.hz
When I attempt a search after hitting Super, the spinner spins, but no results come up once the spinning stops. I'm not sure what changed that caused this. I had a newer kernel installed, but I have since reverted back to the default kernel. I also followed this guide: http://www.webupd8.org/2011/04/how-to-reset-unity-launcher-icons-or.html Alt+F2 does not work. The packages unity-place-applications and unity-place-files are installed. But search still doesn't function correctly.

  • How to control fan speed and temperatures on Asus A8Js laptop running Ubuntu Server?

    - by Azeworai
Hi, I have tried installing asusfan and lm-sensors but I'm unable to control my fans to cool my laptop down sufficiently. Currently it overheats at about 100 degrees celsius and my sensors output somehow does not have any fan information on it: jackson@OLYMPIA:~$ sensors acpitz-virtual-0 Adapter: Virtual device temp1: +69.0°C (crit = +110.0°C) coretemp-isa-0000 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 0: +66.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) coretemp-isa-0001 Adapter: ISA adapter Core 1: +66.0°C (high = +100.0°C, crit = +100.0°C) I have checked my bios and there isn't any fan settings there. I can consistently overheat just by converting a video via Handbrake. I have ubuntu-desktop installed for a GUI. Is there a way for me to control my fans to start spinning before it reaches a critical temperature and kills itself?

  • Structuring game world entities and their rendering objects

    - by keithjgrant
I'm putting together a simple 2d tile-based game. I'm finding myself spinning circles on some design decisions, and I think I'm in danger of over-engineering. After all, the game is simple enough that I had a working prototype inside of four hours with fewer than ten classes, it just wasn't scalable or flexible enough for a polished game. My question is about how to structure flow of control between game entity objects and their rendering objects. Should each renderer have a reference to their entity or vice-versa? Or both? Should the entity be in control of calling the render() method, or be completely oblivious? I know there are several valid approaches here, but I'm kind of feeling decision paralysis. What are the pros and cons of each approach?

  • What spins your disks?

    - by fatherjack
LiveJournal Tags: TSQL,How To,Tips and Tricks,DMV,File Usage I'm not asking what makes you mad - that's what grinds your gears; I am asking what activities on your servers make your hard drive spindles get spinning. Do you know which files are the busiest on your SQL Server? Are some databases burning a hole in your platters? Is the TempDB data file busier than your Distribution database, or does one of your CRM partitions trump them both? With a little bit of careful consideration you can...(read more)

  • Is it possible to power down my external via the eject button?

    - by beanaroo
I'm trying to convert from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.10 with Gnome 3.6. Using the notification area's eject icon, I notice the partition is unmounted but the drive is still powered and spinning... I understand the latter can be taken care of by means of udisks --detach /dev/sdb I really don't want to have to run a command everytime I eject. Windows does the whole process when ejecting a medium via the systray. Is there a way I could add in the command to the eject button? Is there an appropriate place I could file a feature request? Little things like this are making it hard for me to swap back over to Linux. Thanks for the support!

  • Leg animation not working

    - by Monacraft
    I am making a simple animation in XNA C# of a leg moving. This is the logic code for the thigh. It is meant to swing from 25' to 335'. However instead, it hits a point and then keeps on spinning in the other direction. Please help, here's the code: private void Thigh_method() { if (Legdata.Left == true) signvalue = -0.05f; else signvalue = 0.05f; if (Legdata.ToMid == true) Thighturn_ang += signvalue; if (Legdata.ToMid == false) Thighturn_ang -= signvalue; if (Thighturn_ang <= 25 || Thighturn_ang <= 335 && Thighturn_ang <= 180) Legdata.Left = true; if (Thighturn_ang >= 25 || Thighturn_ang >= 335 && Thighturn_ang >= 180) Legdata.Left = false; if (Thighturn_ang == 0) Legdata.ToMid = false; if (Math.Abs(Thighturn_ang) >= 25f) Legdata.ToMid = true; } Thanks in advance, Yours: Mona

  • How to change keyboard sleep button to hibernate?

    - by Allu2
I have a keyboard with a "sleep" button that does indeed make my computer go to sleep. The problem is that Ubuntu can't really handle sleep on my computer, causing it go into a non-responsive mode, having the CPU fan spinning at full speed and it stops receiving any input. Hibernation instead works mainly as it should. I would like to set the sleep key to hibernate, but the keyboard settings' hotkeys tab doesn't have this "sleep" keybinding and though I could make new one with hibernate --force as the command, it would require root rights to run. How can I change the keyboard sleep button action to hibernate?

  • No Launcher or bars on desktop when running from a VPS

    - by jeff
I'm using tightVNC on Ubuntu 12.10 and can see and change the desktop background pic. I can also press f3 to get a file viewer. But there is no topbar or left side launcher. I do not think its an nvidia problem because I'm using a VPS and I logon remotely. I've tried so many variations of /root/.vnc/xstartup such as gnome-session &, or gnome-session –-session=gnome-classic &, my head is spinning. I've seen other people have this issue and was wondering if anyone solved it.

  • Prevent product key from being used on multiple virtual machines

    - by Nahum Litvin
I have a software product. it will probably run on VMs that have no network connection at all. I want the user to pay for each VM the user runs. I thought to ask the user for some kind of hardware ID and provide him with serial that is unique for his machine. But user can just copy the VM image and than have two machines running? So I thought of having a security dongle. But how can I prevent user from running two VM's on the same machine both connected to the same dongle? This should be only basic defense so that actual hacking will be required to breach the license and not only spinning one more VM.

  • Time display and Cursor bug in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

    - by user291774
Just installed Ubuntu 14.04. Noticed the time in seconds speeds up then slows down to normal speed. The cursor for the keyboard has a strange rhythm; it stays normal, then slowly speeds up faster and faster till it looks like it's not blinking anymore, then goes back to normal and starts the process again. It almost seems like my whole operating system speeds up then slows down again. Even the hour circle that spins when it's loading starts slowly then it picks up speed till it spins so fast it looks like it's not even spinning. It interferes with video and the whole system. I have a Dell Vostro 3750 dual video cards and dual boot with Windows 7. Windows is running fine.
