    Does anybody know for what the acronym ZIP stands for which was and is used in programs like PKZIP and GZIP? There is a compression algorithm named Lempel-Ziv-Welch-Algorithm (LZW) maybe the guy named Ziv invented together with other people ZIP? I cannot find anything about it, maybe its not an abbreviation but instead it just means "to zip files" but I think originally there was more about it..

In other words how to package my application with node.js inside, in order to avoid the users to have node.js already installed. The tipical use case is: I run the application and the application works using the node core that is provide with the application (or the application checks if there is node.js installed, and if not it donwload and install it automatically).   • NVelocity (or Velocity) as a stand-alone formula evaluator

    I am using NVelocity in my application to generate html emails. My application has an event-driven model, where saving and/or updating of objects causes these emails to be sent out. Each event can trigger zero, one or multiple multiple emails. I want to be able to configure which emails get sent out at run-time without having to modify code. I was thinking I could leverage the NVelocity #if() directive to do this. Here is my idea... Step 1) Prior to email sending, the administrator must configure a formula for NVelocity to evaluate. For example: $User.FirstName == "Jack" Step 2) When an object is saved or created, build an NVelocity template in memory based on the input formula. For example: String formula = GetFormulaFromDB(); // $User.FirstName == "Jack" String templ = "#if( " + formula + ") 1 #else 0 #end"; Step 3) Execute the NVelocity engine in memory against the template. Check the results to see if we have to send the email: String result = VelocityMerge(templ); // utility function if( result.Trim() == "1" ) { SendEmail(); } I know this is not exactly what NVelocity was intended to do, but I think it just might work :) One of the benefits of doing things this way is that the same syntax can be used for the formula as is used inside the template. Does anybody have any words of caution or suggestions? Is there a way to execute the #if() directive without jumping through hoops like I have above? Is there a recommended way to validate the formula syntax ahead of time? Thanks.

I want to check if the enemy has the class of either smallEnemy, medEnemy, or lrgEnemy and then do the collision check which is what I thought I had but it doesn't seem to work. Also, the game starts to lag the more and more time goes on. Would anyone know the reason for that?

  • Do you think that GAE alone is enough to justify learning Python over Ruby?

    Considering the fact that you don't have to get involved in setting up/buying a server or even buying a domain, do you think that fact alone is enough to choose one over the other? I don't necessarily want to work on Google App Engine, I just find it convenient when it comes to hosting/environment/etc. and wondering if that's a good enough reason to learn python. In any case, I'm not looking for a debate between python and ruby but more on Google App Engine and whether its value is enough to dictate the language you should learn.

  • When I shoot from a gun while walking, the bullet is off the center, but when stand still it's fine

    I am making a small project in Unity, and whenever I walk with the gun and shoot at the same time, the bullets seem to curve and shoot off 2-3 CMs from the center. When I stand still this doesn't happen.     Mechanic The mechanic is called "market manipulation" and is supposed to work like this: Players can enter the London Stock Exchange (LSE) LSE displays the stock prices of 8 to 10 companies and derivatives. This number is relatively small to ensure that players will collide in their efforts to manipulate the market in their favor. The prices are calculated based on real world prices of these companies and derivatives (in real time) any market manipulations that were conducted by the players any market corrections of the system Players can buy and sell shares with cash, a resource in the game, at current in-game market value Players can manipulate the market, i.e. let the price of a share either rise or fall, by some amount, over a certain period of time. Manipulating the market requires spending certain in-game resources and is therefore limited. The system continuously corrects market manipulations by letting the in-game prices converge towards their real world counterparts at a rate of 2% of the difference between the two per hour. Because of this market correction mechanism, pushing up prices (and screwing down prices) becomes increasingly difficult the higher (lower) the price already is. Goals Players are supposed to collide (and have incentives to collide) in their efforts to manipulate the market in their favor, especially when it comes to manipulation efforts by different groups. Prices should not resolve around any equilibrium points. The more variance the better. Band-wagoning should always involve risk (recognizing that prices start rising should not be a sure sign that they will keep rising so that everybody can make easy profits even when they don't manipulate the market themselves) Question Are there any game-theoretic considerations that prevent the mechanic from achieving these goals?

    I'd like to remove a keyboard icon, so replacing "[###] USA" as keyboard layout indicator to just "En", an English or American flag, or "USA" at least. How can I achieve this? UPDATE: When I've clicked to remove e-mail icon from the bar, keyboard language indication has disappeared also, and now I only see that useless keyboard icon, and don't see what language is selected now :-( I use Ubuntu 10.10.

  • Can I change Synapse shortcut to Super/Windows key alone?

    When I'm trying to edit synapse config, it does not allow me to use Super_L as a direct shortcut for invoking it. Is there a round-about way that I can go through. When I just press the Windows/Super key, the configuration window does not acknowledge it. However, a combination shortcut (such as Super+a) do work fine. Since I'm using Precise, with unity, I'd also need a way to change the default dash behavior from Windows/Super key to something else.

  • Joining a company to get experience vs. going alone [closed]

    My goal is to build a successful web startup, say the next Digg or Twitter, and I am in doubt regarding what is the best route to follow as a programmer. I see basically two options: Get an internship/job with an established online company, so that I could get a mentor and learn from more experienced programmers, learn their processes, methodology and so on. I could do this for 1-2 years, and then quit to start working on my own stuff. Start working on my own projects right away, starting with small ones and moving up gradually. This would give me more control on the things I would be working with, but I would lack contact with more experienced people, so I would need to figure basic things on my own. Doing both is not an option in my opinion, cause I would need to put a lot of effort/time into each if I was to learn/improve as a programmer. So is one route definitely better than the other? Is there a third one I am not considering? Background: I already work by myself developing content-based websites and doing SEO, and I am decent at it so money is not a problem. Last year I started learning to program, first by myself and now I enrolled in a CS degree on a good university.

I can tell it has to do with tracking bug reports and build problems for specific ports but the acronym is baffling me. It may also be used in the Linux world but Googling for "Linux PR" only yields results related to Public Relations. Apparently FreeBSD has PRs and Linux has Public Relations.

  • Is MS Reporting Services suitable for stand-alone reports?

    Hello all: I work for a ISV. Our product can use both SQL Server and Oracle as its back-end server. It includes a number of reports (currently in Crystal). We are investigating moving to Micrsoft Reporting Services, but I'm beginning to think that it's a bad idea. We want for our reports to look and feel as though they are a part of our application, and we will not require SQL Server (the customer can choose Oracle). Although I see the reporting services supports a stand-alone mode (RDLC), the boundry between what requires SQL server and what doesn't looks extremely ambiguous. (example, the stand-alone report builder appears to require SQL Server, most of the documentation appears to be part of SQL Server's documentation) It looks to me like if I want to keep my application DB-agnostic, I had better steer clear of Reporting Services. Have I missed the boat here?

  • How can I logoff and go to stand-by via Win XP script?

    I am looking for a way to write a script (of any sort) that would both log me off my local Windows account and also immediatedly put the computer to sleep / stand-by. I've found solutions that can do one or the other but not logoff and then sleep all in one script. The SHUTDOWN command doesn't offer this and I can't find any other options either. This is for Win XP, SP3 right now but someday soon I'll want a Windows 7 solution as well. Thanks for any ideas or an explanation as to why this isn't possible. :)

    Can I add a SATA drive to a Windows 7 machine which is in standby mode? The hardware supports hot-plug. Could pulling the drive out while in standby corrupt the data on the drive (unflushed caches, ...)? Does Windows flush before standing by? How about swapping a drive with another drive of different kind (SSD - mechanical disk) and size, also while in stand-by. Could the OS when waking up believe that the old drive is still there, and write to it and thus corrupt it, since the new one has different partitions and data?

  • Using SVN alone or in small workgroups - workflow approach?

    Hi everybody, I have spent some months working on a web application and we're come close to production stage. It's soon time to expand the development group with 1-3 people on this project. I have not too much experience on working with SVN, but It's obviously the choice for a big part of the larger companies out there, so I am guessing that the pros of SVN without a doubt outweights the time spent on commit/check ins / check outs etc. The workflow seems to become a bit more complicated with SVN, and even though I have read Version Control with Subversion by O'Reilly Media and I am not sure yet if it's overkill to use SVN for any reasons besides backup when developing alone or in a small (1-3 people) workgroup? How do you do it? What's your workflow with version control while working alone or in small workgroups? Thanks!
