  • My cpus are powered down periodically

    I post here because I am using Ubuntu but this is probably an hardware problem. Since I bought my new setup with AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635 Processor and asus m4a89td pro/usb3 motherboard with ecc ram I have stuttering on videos. I was using ubuntu 11.10 now ubuntu 12.10.   • How can I speed up boot on one of my machines?

    I have a Gateway all in one machine (2 gig Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 dual core processor, 2 gig RAM - full specs) on which I installed 10.10. Once it has booted it's fine, but it takes forever to boot. This is what happens: 1. Boot starts with cursor flashing for about 10-15 seconds 2. Cursor disappears for 1.5 - 2 minutes 3. Cursor reappears, blinks a few seconds more, boot finishes in another 10 seconds 4. Login screen I have another machine with marginal better specs that boots up in no time (basically the above minus the two minute delay). Things I've done: enabled verbose mode for grub nothing is showing until after 2 minute pause. checked syslog last message before pause is a message from alsa saying the process is already running (or something similar... going from memory here...) It could be something sound related as the built in speakers are not working (sound card is recognized though and headphones work). Anyway, it's not the end of the world, but it's annoying and I'd like to know what's going on... Many thanks, and let me know if more info is needed.

    I am looking for a better way to log cronjobs. Most cronjobs tend to spam email or the console, get ignored, or create yet another logfile. In this case, I have a Nagios NSCA script which sends data to a central Nagios sever. This send_nsca script also prints a single status line to STDOUT, indicating success or failure. 0 * * * * root /usr/local/nagios/sbin/nsca_check_disk This emails the following message to root@localhost, which is then forwarded to my team of sysadmins. Spam. forwarded nsca_check_disk: 1 data packet(s) sent to host successfully. I'm looking for a log method which: Doesn't spam the messages to email or the console Don't create yet another krufty logfile which requires cleanup months or years later. Capture the log information somewhere, so it can be viewed later if desired. Works on most unixes Fits into an existing log infrastructure. Uses common syslog conventions like 'facility' Some of these are third party scripts, and don't always do logging internally. UPDATE 2010-04-30 In the process of writing this question, I think I have answered myself. So I'll answer myself "Jeopardy-style". Is there any problem with this method? The following will send any Cron output to /usr/bin//logger, which will send to syslog, with a 'tag' of 'nsca_check_disk'. Syslog handles it from there. Most *nix distributions already do logrotation, and do it well.

    Hi, I know that the date -s <STRING> command sets the time described by the string STRING. What i want is to log the above command whenever it is used to set the time into the file /tmp/log/user.log. In my Linux distribution the logging is done by syslog-ng. I already have some logs going into /tmp/log/user.log. This is the content of /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf in my system for logging into /tmp/log/user.log destination d_notice { file("/tmp/log/user.log");}; filter f_filter10 { level(notice) and not facility(mail,authpriv,cron); }; log { source(s_sys); filter(f_filter10); destination(d_notice); }; What should i do so that date -s command is also logged into /tmp/log/user.log

  • Can Octopussy use messages other than syslog style?

    I am currently exploring different options for a centralized log server. We use both Linux (Ubuntu 10.04 / 12.04, LTS for both) and Windows, though for this specific issue only Linux is relevant. I like the interface that octopussy has and it's feature list, but I am hesitant due to a few things. One of the biggest concerns I have is that it seems to be syslog only. The end goal is to have a centralized place for our devs and admins to be able to search through the logs generated by Apache, Tomcat and 70+ web apps spread out among a cluster, for both our prod and test environments. While I did see that octopussy has support for plugins, I haven't been able to find any sort of plugin repo or in depth guides as to what can be done with them. Does anyone know if plugins can be used to allow octopussy to non-syslog messages? Specifically log4j type log messages that may include multi-line stack traces and such. Also, is there a user community for this software, such as a mailing list or forum? I've been unable to locate any so far. Thank you.

    I have configured syslog server on my linux machine like this Linux Machine (syslog client) -- Linux Machine (syslog server) I have configured it and its working properly. Now, the problem is I want to look at the logs located on remote server in a particular directory for example /var/log/host-ip/httpd.log. One way is that I use ssh for that and then see those logs using commands like tail etc. So is there any Browser based graphical utility which I can use on my machine in which I just give the remote folder location, ip-address etc. and the software shows me the logs present on that remote server.     So I'm following this tutorial: http://www.howtoforge.com/using-fail2ban-to-block-wrong-ispconfig-logins and the problem I have is that rsyslog won't redirect the output from a file to another /etc/rsyslog.d/12-ispconfig.conf: if $programname == 'ispconfig' then /var/log/ispconfig.log #the file exists But I keep getting the output to syslog: ispconfig[1117]: Login failed for user asdasd on IP XX.XX.XXX.XX Any ideas how to fix this?

    I am growing weary of some error messages in my syslog - its showing: Jul 3 15:16:38 web rpc.idmapd[14535]: nss_getpwnam: name 'nobody' does not map into domain 'mydomain.com' I have check, my hostname is correct as mydomain.com and I even added a valid entry in /etc/hostname . I have edited my /etc/idmapd.conf to reflect this domain name, this error message log every 10minutes and its becoming frustrating, I do not know why or whats causing it, the nfs server is working ok, with correct entries and now message in the log. I am using centos6 -- Ofcoure, i have substituted mydomain.com with my real domain

    I'm using the $InputFile facility in rsyslog to monitor various log files scattered around my ubuntu 12.04 server. E.g. nginx, unicorn, rails, postgres, cron etc. Now my problem is, that some of these log files are created with -rw-r----- right, so rsyslog doesn't have read rights. Since I install most of the programs using apt-get, and therefore didn't change anything from default. So, in other words, I would like not to modify every singe log file / daemon to have the right permissions, if I instead could give syslog read access to all of them at once. But the question is - can I do that, and is it the "right thing to do"?

  • Apache multiple vhost logs, stored locally and sent to remote logstash

    I'm investigating centralised logging and it seems there's so many different ways this can be done. I don't want to run logstash as a log "sender", preferring to keep the web servers as lean and simple possible. So that means either using syslog, syslog-ng or the one I'm testing now, rsyslog. But I would like to have separate vhost log files on the web server, in addition to these logs being sent to a remote log collector. I've tested rsyslog using the imfile module to watch the Apache log files, but this means I have to hard-code each vhost log file into my rsyslog.conf. Not ideal as people will invariably forget when they add/remove sites on the server. The reason I'm using rsyslog's imfile is that Apache doesn't appear to let you log to file and syslog. And I want to keep vhost-specific log files on the web server. So how can I do this? Is there a way of having rsyslog produce local log files and forward the logs to a remote collector? I am prepared to change my Apache config to log to a single access/error log for all vhosts, so long as there are vhost-specific log files produced somewhere on the web server machine. I just don't want to lose any logging info if the remote log collector can't be contacted for any reason. Any comments/suggestions? Cheers, B

    Hi, I have an application (in java) running in a windows PC and I want to send logging messages to a syslog server running in a linux box somewhere in the network. The problem I have is, that it is not clear to me what should I use as facility in this case. I.e. can I (/should I) send the logging info as one of LOCAL0-LOCAL7? Or are they not supposed to be used by remote applications? It is not clear to me if they are usable or not. Should I use USER instead? Could anyone help me on this please? Thank you

    I have an Asus N53SM laptop that I leave running for several weeks at a time. I never put it in hibernate or suspend, I only close the lid when I'm not using it. After a few days or weeks of running, the touchpad and keyboard will Both lock up (at the same time) for no apparent reason. I could be just surfing the internet when it happens. The touchpad and keyboard seem to only lock up when I'm actively using the laptop (not when idle), which may mean it's related to something I press, but I'm not sure? The touchpad never locks or unlocks when Pressing FN and the designated touchpad lock key (it does not seem to work on Linux). While the touchpad and keyboard are locked, I am able to plug in my USB mouse and successfully use it to control the screen cursor. I can also remotely get into the system with vnc and ssh, everything seems to run fine there as well. No processes appear out of control. It's just the laptops physical touchpad and keyboard that are locking up. How might I go about diagnosing this problem? What system logs to look at? (anything specific to look for in them?) Perhaps I should try reloading some modules? Any thing else I should inspect?

    A task in my homework assignment asks me to create a virtual file system, mount it, and perform some operations on it. I am supposed to create a file of 10 MB whose bits are all set to 0, format it as ext3 and mount it. This is how I've done that: dd if=/dev/zero of=~/filesyst bs=10485760 count=1 sudo mkfs.ext3 ~/filesyst sudo mount –o loop ~/filesyst /media/fuse Even though I've used /dev/sero, the file i still full of gibberish characters (mostly at-signs). The permissions on /media/fuse are drw-rw-rw- (which are alright), but the permissions on the files inside it are something like this: d????????? ? ? ? ? ? lost+found -????????? ? ? ? ? ? secret_bin Where have I gone wrong?

  • Route from Cisco ASA over site to site VPN

    I want to be able to push f/w logging traffic to a server at a remote site. This server is accepting syslog traffic on port 514. In the ASA I've configured it to use this server as a syslog server. The Cisco f/w's inside interface address is 10.0.0.1 and I want to route over the link to an address of 192.168.1.1. The vpn is up and working between sites, and local clients at each site can access resources etc. How would I go about setting up the route from the f/w to this remote server only?

    I'm having trouble getting iptables to log to any file. My iptables looks like: Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT 1366 packets, 433582 bytes) pkts bytes target prot opt in out source destination 869 60656 LOG icmp -- venet0 * 0.0.0.0/0 0.0.0.0/0 LOG flags 0 level 7 Syslogd is the only log helper running. The default syslog.conf didn't work, so I tried adding "kern.=debug -/var/log/iptables.log". But the file already has "kern.* -/var/log/kern.log". There are recent syslog entries, so it's not a permissions thing. I'm running Ubuntu 12.04.1 with 2.6.32-042stab061.2

I am not talking about standard system logs such as /var/log/mail , message, boot etc. I want to redirect or send application logs and they may not be using syslog daemon at all to log their message. Such as /appdir/log/error.log. I ran across many posts on the internet; most suggest using rsyslog or syslog-ng. Well so far I have been able to redirect the standard system logs not the application logs. I am using centos 5/6 environment.

    My iptables is setup to block all unneeded ports as it should but I'm checking my syslog due to these random but all-to-frequent apache2 crashes and I noticed a lot of requests such as this.
