• Win-XP Browsers Hang on page load - (waiting for...)

  Hello, I’m having problems with my browsers hanging on loading pages on my desktop machine. I’m using Windows XP Pro with SP3 and fully updated except for IE 8. All three of my browsers, IE 7, Chrome and Firefox are having the same problems. Pages are not being loaded and are hanging on “waiting for …”. The browsers are waiting for the page being loaded or ad servers. Sometimes a page will load but the loading graphic continues to be displayed as if the page were still loading when the page appears to be fully loaded. The problem is bad enough that I can’t really use any of my browsers. I can eventually get most pages to load by stopping and restarting the page load. I have DSL modem with a wireless router and I have been able to eliminate the modem and router from being the source of my problem. My laptop doesn’t have any problems even when hardwired to the router and with the wireless connection disabled. I deleted the NIC and let XP re-install. Also tried a different network cable. Tried the same router port used in the laptop test. One clue that may be important is that I can’t connect to my router using the desktop machine…the page hangs while trying to connect. I can ping the router and I can quickly connect to the router using the laptop. I also can’t use the Windows update process – the page never fully loads. The problem affects other user accounts and even happens in safe mode. I am convinced the problem is with part of the O/S…some layer able to affect all of the browsers. The purpose of this post is to see if anyone has some ideas before I do a XP repair. I have done quite a bit of trouble-shooting: Ran a full anti-virus scan with AVG – no problems. Ran full scans with Spybot, MalwareBytes and Sophos anti-rootkit – no problems. Ran Chkdsk with both options checked. Ran Disk Clean up Defragged RE-installed IE7 Cleared all the browser caches Ran Ccleaner (registry tool) Ran HijackThis – nothing unusual (problem happens in safe mode too) Ran Process Explorer – no unusual processes Used System Restore and fell back several days – no change in the problem Booted to last known good configuration – no change in the problem Ran MicrosoftFixit50199.msi – no change in the problem Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated…I’m not looking forward to doing a repair on XP. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Windows 7 - 64 Computer shuts off unexpectedly

  I have a home built Windows 7 x64 computer with a Core 2 Quad CPU. It has recently taken to suddenly shutting down/turning off at unusual intervals. It seems to be most common when playing media. I have tried running SpeedFan, and the CPU temp seems to hover around 49C. The computer has been running fine for over 1 years. Could heat be my problem, and how should I address it?

• Why is my SSH session timing out in less than a minute?

  Within a minute of connecting to my remote Linux server through SSH, my session times out and I cannot contact the server until a few seconds have passed. Meanwhile, I'm connected to other servers without interruption. This is only happening when I establish connection from an hotel wireless AP. When I connect from my phone's Internet, the problem does not occur. Does anyone know what might be causing these unusual timeouts?

• scorecardresearch dot com: weird tracking pixel

  I'm seeing very weird behaviour in relation to this domain and a tracking image. On a specific page on our site, I'm seeing a script that's being added dynamically, apparently via flash (I wasn't even aware that flash could alter the DOM ...) That script is located at: http://scorecardresearch.com/beacon.js When I request that URL, I see a 1x1 gif. Another weird point is that this domain appears to break all the web-based whois tools; entering that domain results in a 1x1 gif. This is even to the extent where, if I enter scorecardresearch.com into the Title as part of this question, GIF code appears just below it! Hence, the "dot" in the title. The only 'unusual' thing on the page is a slideshare 'widget', which is flash-based - that's why I'm concluding that flash is altering the DOM. Anyone know what is going on here? How concerned should I be?

• Implementing algorithms via compute shaders vs. pipeline shaders

  With the availability of compute shaders for both DirectX and OpenGL it's now possible to implement many algorithms without going through the rasterization pipeline and instead use general purpose computing on the GPU to solve the problem. For some algorithms this seems to become the intuitive canonical solution because they're inherently not rasterization based, and rasterization-based shaders seemed to be a workaround to harness GPU power (simple example: creating a noise texture. No quad needs to be rasterized here). Given an algorithm that can be implemented both ways, are there general (potential) performance benefits over using compute shaders vs. going the normal route? Are there drawbacks that we should watch out for (for example, is there some kind of unusual overhead to switching from/to compute shaders at runtime)? Are there perhaps other benefits or drawbacks to consider when choosing between the two?

• Monitoring almost anything with BizTalk 360

  When you work in an integration environment it is common that you will find yourself in a situation where you integrate with some unusual applications or have some unusual dependencies. That is the nature of integration. When you work with BizTalk one of the common problems is that BizTalk often is the place where problems with applications you integrate with are highlighted and these external applications may have poor monitoring solutions. Fortunately if you are a working with a customer who uses BizTalk 360 then it contains a feature called the "Web Endpoint Manager". Typically the web endpoint manager is used to monitor web services that you integrate with and will ping them at appropriate times to make sure they return the expected HTTP status code. When you have an usual situation where you want to monitor something which is key to the success to your solution but you find yourself having to consider a significant custom solution to monitor the external dependency then the Web Endpoint Manager could be your friend. The endpoint manager monitors a url and checks for a certain status code. This means that you can create your own aspx web page and then make BizTalk 360 monitor this web page. Behind the web page you could write any code you wished. An example of this is architecture is shown in the below diagram.     In the custom web page you would implement some custom code to do whatever it is that you want to monitor. In the below code snippet you can see how the Page_Load default method is doing some kind of check then depending on the result of the check it returns a certain HTTP code. protected void Page_Load(object sender, EventArgs e) { var result = CheckSomething();   if (result == "Success") Response.StatusCode = 202; else if (result == "DatabaseError") Response.StatusCode = 510; else if (result == "SystemError") Response.StatusCode = 512; else Response.StatusCode = 513;   }   In BizTalk 360 you would go into the Monitor and Notify tab and then to BizTalk Environment which gives you access to the Web Endpoint Manager. You need an alarm setup which configures how the endpoint will be checked. I'm not going to go through the details of creating the alarm as this is already documented in the BizTalk 360 documentation. One point to note is that in the example I am using I setup a threshold alarm which means that the url is checked about every minute and if there is an error that persists for a period of time then the alarm will raise the alert notification. In my example I configured the alarm to fire if the error persisted for 3 minutes. The below picture shows accessing the endpoint manager.   In the web endpoint manager you would then configure your endpoint to monitor and the HTTP response code which indicates all is working fine. The below picture shows this. I now have my endpoint monitoring setup and BizTalk 360 should be checking my custom endpoint to see that it is available. If I wanted to manually sanity check that the endpoints I have registered are working fine then clicking the Refresh button will show if they are all good or not. If my custom ASP.net page which is checking my dependency gets a problem you will see in the endpoint manager that the status code does not match the expected return code and your endpoints will display in red and you can see the problem. The below picture shows this. If I use specific HTTP response codes for the errors the custom ASP.net page might encounter I can easily interpret these to know what the problem is. Using the alarms and notifications with BizTalk 360 it means when your endpoint goes into an error state you can easily configure email or SMS notifications from BizTalk 360 to tell you that your endpoint is having problems and you can use BizTalk 360 to help correlate what the problem is to allow you to investigate further. Below you can see the email which tells me my endpoint is not working.   When everything returns to normal you will see the status is now fixed and you will see a situation like below where you can see the WebEndpoints are now green and the return code matches what is expected.   Conclusion As you can see it is really easy to plug your own custom ASP.net page into the BizTalk 360 web endpoint monitoring feature. This extension then gives you the power to really extend the monitoring to almost anything you want as long as you can write some .net code to check that the dependency is available and working. It would be interesting to hear of any ideas people have around things they would monitor with this extension. • Why keyboard layout is acting weird?

  I'm using Ubuntu 12.04. I use English (USA) and Bangla (probhat) layout. Everything regarding keyboard layout was perfect since I've installed Ubuntu about 5 months ago. Suddenly, I can't write bangla anywhere (naming folder etc.) without LibreOffice. when I'm trying to write bangla anywhere only a "square" symbol comes out for each character. Interestingly, when i'm trying to view the keyboard layout, "square" symbol is there instead of each character. Very surprising. Just take a look at the screen shot of the keyboard layout. Really very unusual issue to me.

There have been only a few refinements to the specification since public review: Incorporated language changes into JLS proper. Forbid combining diamond and explicit type arguments to a generic constructor. Removed unusual protocol around Throwable.addSuppressed(null) and added a new constructor to Throwable to allow suppression to be disabled. Added disclaimers that OutOfMemoryError, NullPointerException, and ArithmeticException objects created by the JVM may have suppression disabled. Added thread safely requirements to Throwable.addSuppressed and Throwable.getSuppressed. Next up is the final approval ballot; almost there!

• Log incoming requests

  We have Tomcat running on Ubuntu server. It runs a web service, open to the internet. Sometimes it has sudden spike of traffic and goes down. There is nothing unusual in Tomcat access logs. I guess because some of the requests are so 'heavy' that they never finish and hence are not recorded to Tomcat access logs. Is there a way to configure Ubuntu to log incoming requests in the following format (below)? Date, Time, URL (with query string params), IP address (of client) There should be one line per request. Each request should be logged before it is executed. Only incoming requests to ports 80 and 443 should be logged.

• Programmers that need a lot of "Outside Help" - Is this bad?

  Does anyone else think it's kind of tacky or poor practice when programmers use an unusual amount of libraries/frameworks to accomplish certain tasks? I'm working with someone on a relatively simple programming project involving geolocation queries. The guy seems like an amateur to me. For the server software, this guy used Python, Django, and a bunch of other crazy libraries ("PostGIS + gdal, geoip, and a few other spatial libraries" he writes) to create it. He wrote the entire program in one method (in views.py, nonetheless facepalm), and it's almost unreadable. Is this bad? Does anyone else think that this is really tacky and amateurish? Am I the only minimalist out there these days?

• Cannot connect to Internet after using Windows XP on dual booted machine

  I have a dual booted Windows XP and Ubuntu 10.10 box (AMD64) and have an unusual problem in that after connecting to the internet on Windows I cannot connect using Ubuntu. I don't believe it is actually a problem with configuring my Ubuntu connections because when I get up in the morning Ubuntu connects without any problem - this problem only exists (and persists for at least several hours) if I try to connect using Ubuntu immediately after connecting using Windows. I don't know how long the problem actually lasts because I usually just go to bed and then in the morning I can connect without problems. It is not problem with my provider's service as I have a second Ubuntu 10.10 box which I manually connect and works even when the dual booted one (on Ubuntu) won't. It is a particular problem with the dual booted box. A power down reset does not solve the problem.

• What ever happened to the Google AJAX Search API

  I am looking to query the main Google search however all references including stackoveflow point to the Google AJAX Search API. The odd thing is that it does not seem to exist any more not even a note to say it is depreciated? The old links point to main Google code site. If I look at the list of API's on that site the API it replaced is there Web Search API (Deprecated) which links back to same page but not the Google AJAX Search API. Further Google searching is not being helpful either, many blog posts pointing to the same Google site (http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxsearch/) that has no content and redirects to the same place? Just to prove it did exist I have found it on the way back machine however the last snapshot did not show any special unusual message.

• Login crash loop

  After about the second/third batch of updates on a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04, I end up getting stuck in an infinite login loop: I enter my password, screen goes black and shows me the end of the initialisation messages (including things like CUPS initialising), and then the greeter reappears. Kicker is, as I'm using gnome-shell, I just decided to uninstall LightDM, ubuntu-desktop and unity-greeter, using GDM as my manager, and the problem still happens in exactly the same manner. I'm lost even as to where to start looking - Xorg logs, LightDM logs (before I removed it), syslog and dmesg logs have held no unusual information at all. I have a TeX assignment due next week, and reinstalling Ubuntu every time I want to work on it is not going to work (nor is using TeX on Windows ;). Anything else I should try?

  That disconcerting news is what Mark Hachman is reporting for Read Write Web. One can more or less safely assume that Microsoft will come up with its own antivirus software for Windows RT. Still, this is a rather unusual state of affairs; why is the company doing this? • Kicked out when logged in?

  When i log into ubuntu the screen goes black as it were logging in but then i am back in the login screen. I can login as guest (i should disable that). I can login via ssh. The last time i had no issues was when i used it this morning and the only unusual thing i did was shutdown via ssh (i think i wrote shutdown now) which had ubuntu hang after showing the shuting down screen for many seconds (i kind of assumed it shut down properly since the UI froze as well and it usually takes less time). Whats the easiest way to fix this w/o reinstalling? Its a brand new install and so it probably takes me 10mins to recopy/setup everything so i may just do that -edit- using 12.04

• Why is the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_empathy_empathy-chat.1000.upload empty?

  I just experienced an unusual crash: I tried to click on a name entry in the contact list of Empathy. A crash happened. Usually I am asked then if I'd like to report the error to Launchpad, and Launchpad opens. This time the error message was: "Excuse me. Ubuntu 12.04 noticed an internal error. If you notice further problems try to restart your computer. Send an error report to Launchpad to help removing this problem?" This time Launchpad did not open automatically. A new window opened and I could read the relevant error report. Later I found the error report in the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_empathy_empathy-chat.1000.crash. Why went the course of action this time differently from other crashes? Why is the file /var/crash/_usr_lib_empathy_empathy-chat.1000.upload empty?

• Ubuntu 11.10 momentarily freezes every couple minutes

  I'm working on an Acer Aspire One D257 running Ubuntu 11.10, and every few minutes the laptop freezes up for a second or two, before becoming responsive again. This doesn't really present a huge problem, but when I'm trying to code all of a sudden vim stops responding for a couple seconds while I'm trying to modify my code, it's increasingly frustrating. The odd part is, if I play a movie in VLC at the same time, when vim pauses the video keeps playing just fine (VLC's priority is not modified). I'm wondering if anyone knows why this may be happening, or in lieu of that, how I might be able to track down the source of my frustrating pauses. Normally I would try using top, but the pauses are shorter than 2 seconds so nothing unusual shows up in top as consuming the CPU. Does anyone know how to troubleshoot intermittent repeating 1 second long pauses in vim?

• Programming Challenges for a beginner

  I'm in an unusual situation. A colleague of mine wants to "learn programming" and, being a developer I have been tasked with teaching him "programming". Personally, I am self taught, and have never taught any sort of skill to anybody else before so I am not quite sure where to start. Also, I still have a heck of a lot to learn myself (although don't we all)! I write in C# but is C# a good language for a beginner? I was thinking that Visual Basic .Net would be a better starting point, so was considering getting him setup with Visual Studio Express 2010, teaching him a few basics (variables, functions, classes etc) then finding some programming challenges and asking him to work through these. Does anybody have a good source of these sorts of challenges? Also is this a good strategy? Finally, what are your experiences of teaching programming to somebody else and what advice would you give?

• Trouble Setting up Open SSH with Putty

  I for the life of me can't seem to get openSSH to work on Ubuntu Server 10.10 with keys I generated in PuttyGen on my Windows machine. After hours of trial and error and web searches I can't get my ssh service to accept my private key! Here is my sshd_config. I generated my public and private keys using Putty in Windows then used a ssh connection to paste my key from putty directly into my authorized_keys2 file located in */etc/ssh/publickeys/authorized_keys2* The authorized_keys2 file looks something like: ssh-rsa AAAAB3NzaC1yc2EAAAA... with no email or anything at the end of it. I just pasted it straight from PuttyGen without using a key comment. I feel like it's not working because of some nuance I am not understanding or some unusual setting or incompatibility. I've restarted the ssh service (and the machine) to no avail. What are some common pitfalls I might have gotten myself into? Is there a simpler way to generate ssh keys that putty can use in windows?
