  • Team Foundation Service Preview now open for all!

    - by Tarun Arora
    The concept of TFS in the cloud was first presented back in early 2010, the product team worked hard to preview a constantly evolving solution at the BUILD conference last year and after having completed 31 Sprints today the preview service has been opened for all. No more invitation codes required, TfsPreview has been made public! “Since we announced the Team Foundation Service Preview at the BUILD conference last year, we’ve limited the on boarding of new customers by requiring invitation codes to create accounts.  The main reason for this has been to control the growth of the service to make sure it didn’t run away from us and end up with a bad user experience.  In this time period, we’ve continued to work on our infrastructure, performance, scale, monitoring, management and, of course, some cool new features like cloud build. ”   - Brian Harry Since the service is still in preview, it is free for all… If you haven’t, now is the best time to try out the offering. There is no fixed time line on how long before service becomes chargeable but the terms of service support production use, the service is reliable and the product team committed to carry all of your data forward into production. “The service will remain in “preview” for a while longer while we work through additional features like data portability, commercial terms, etc but the terms of service support production use, the service is reliable and we expect to carry all of your data forward into production. ”  - Brian Harry As of today it’s possible to use TFS Preview with VS 2012 RC, VS 2010 SP1, VS 2008 SP1, the service currently does not work with VS 2005, this is something the product team is actively working on. You can refer to Brian’s announcement blog post here, http://blogs.msdn.com/b/bharry/archive/2012/06/11/team-foundation-service-preview-is-public.aspx

  • Developer’s Life – Summary of Superhero Articles

    - by Pinal Dave
    Earlier this year, I wrote an article series where I talked about developer’s life and compared it with Superhero. I have got amazing response to this series and I have been receiving quite a lots of email suggesting that I should write more blog post about them. Currently I am not planning to write more blog post but I will soon continue another series. In this blog post, I have summarized the entire series. Let me know if you want me to write about any superhero. I will see what I can do about that hero. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Captain America Captain America was first created as a comic book character in the 1940’s as a way to boost morale during World War II.  Aimed at a children’s audience, his legacy faded away when the war ended.  However, he has recently has a major reboot to become a popular movie character that deals with modern issues. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is the Incredible Hulk The Incredible Hulk is possibly one of the scariest superheroes out there.  All superheroes are meant to be “out of this world” and awe-inspiring, but I think most people will agree with I say The Hulk takes this to the next level.  He is the result of an industrial accident, which is scary enough in it’s own right.  Plus, when mild-mannered Bruce Banner is angered, he goes completely out-of-control and transforms into a destructive monster that he cannot control and has no memories of. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Wonder Woman We have focused a lot lately on this “superhero series.”  I love fantasy books and movies, and I feel like there is a lot to be learned from them.  As I am writing this series, though, I have noticed that every super hero I write about is a man.  So today, I would like to talk about the major female super hero – Wonder Woman. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Harry Potter Harry Potter might not be a superhero in the traditional sense, but I believe he still has a lot to teach us and show us about life as a developer.  If you have been living under a rock for the last 17 years, you might not know that Harry Potter is the main character in an extremely popular series of books and movies documenting the education and tribulation of a young wizard (and his friends). Developer’s Life – Every Developer is Like Transformers Transformers may not be superheroes – they don’t wear capes, they don’t have amazing powers outside of their size and folding ability, they’re not even human (technically).  Part of their enduring popularity is that while we are enjoying over-the-top movies, we are learning about good leadership and strong personal skills. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Iron Man Iron Man is another superhero who is not naturally “super,” but relies on his brain (and money) to turn him into a fighting machine.  While traditional superheroes are still popular, a three-movie franchise and incorporation into the new Avengers series shows that Iron Man is popular enough on his own. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Sherlock Holmes I have been thinking a lot about how developers are like super heroes, and I have written two blog posts now comparing them to Spiderman and Superman.  I have a lot of love and respect for developers, and I hope that they are enjoying these articles, and others are learning a little bit about the profession.  There is another fictional character who, while not technically asuper hero, is very powerful, and I also think stands as a good example of a developer. That character is Sherlock Holmes.  Sherlock Holmes is a British detective, first made popular at the turn of the 19thcentury by author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  The original Sherlock Holmes was a brilliant detective who could solve the most mind-boggling crime through simple observations and deduction. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Chhota Bheem Chhota Bheem is a cartoon character that is extremely popular where I live.  He is my daughter’s favorite characters.  I like to say that children love Chhota Bheem more than their parents – it is lucky for us he is not real!  Children love Chhota Bheem because he is the absolute “good guy.”  He is smart, loyal, and strong.  He and his friends live in Dholakpur and fight off their many enemies – and always win – in every episode.  In each episode, they learn something about friendship, bravery, and being kind to others.  Chhota Bheem is a good role model for children, and I think that he is a good role model for developers are well. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Batman Batman is one of the darkest superheroes in the fantasy canon.  He does not come to his powers through any sort of magical coincidence or radioactive insect, but through a lot of psychological scarring caused by witnessing the death of his parents.  Despite his dark back story, he possesses a lot of admirable abilities that I feel bear comparison to developers. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Superman I enjoyed comparing developers to Spiderman so much, that I have decided to continue the trend and encourage some of my favorite people (developers) with another favorite superhero – Superman.  Superman is probably the most famous superhero – and one of the most inspiring. Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. I would like to know which Superhero is your favorite hero! - by Harry Pham
    I download PetStore 2.0 from https://blueprints.dev.java.net/servlets/ProjectDocumentList?folderID=5315&expandFolder=5315&folderID=0. I tried to build them in netbean 6.8 and I got this error SEVERE: Exception while preparing the app java.lang.RuntimeException: javax.naming.NamingException: Lookup failed for 'jdbc/PetstoreDB' in SerialContext [Root exception is javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: PetstoreDB not found] Seems like it cant find 'jdbc/PetStoreDB'. So I went back to the website and it look like I have to build the database via Ant script. So at the PetStore home directory, I run this command ant setup ant run And I got the same error when I try ant run [exec] Deprecated syntax, instead use: [exec] asadmin --port 4848 --host localhost --passwordfile /Users/KingdomHeart/.asadminpass --user admin deploy [options] ... • JSF: initial request and postback request?

    - by Harry Pham
    Please take a look at this below line of code in JSF <h:inputText id="name" value="#{customer.name}" /> Quote from java.sun.com For an initial request of the page containing this tag, the JavaServer Faces implementation evaluates the #{customer.name} expression during the render response phase of the lifecycle. During this phase, the expression merely accesses the value of name from the customer bean, as is done in immediate evaluation. For a postback request, the JavaServer Faces implementation evaluates the expression at different phases of the lifecycle, during which the value is retrieved from the request, validated, and propagated to the customer bean. I am not sure I understand initial request vs postback request. Does the client browser make two different request to the webserver?

  • Apache Commons FileUpload Does not behave like expected

    - by Harry Pham
    I just want to assure you guys that before I post this, I have read couple of similar post but none solved my problem. So here it is. I use Ajax taglib for my form since it wont refresh my screen <%@ taglib uri="WEB-INF/taglib.tld" prefix="a" %> <a:AjaxUpload action="UploadServlet"> <input type="file"> <input type="submit" value="Upload"> </a:AjaxUpload> If this is in any confused you guys, then you can think of the above code will create these form, but send request asynchronously. <form action="UploadServlet" enctype="multipart/form-data" method="post"> <input type="file"> <input type="submit"> </form> My first question is, if I add name="file" inside the <input> to make it become like this, <input type="file" name="file">, my servlet will throw an exception. It wont if I take it out. Here is the exception: SEVERE: Servlet.service() for servlet UploadServlet threw exception javax.servlet.ServletException: Servlet execution threw an exception at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.internalDoFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:313) at org.apache.catalina.core.ApplicationFilterChain.doFilter(ApplicationFilterChain.java:206) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardWrapperValve.invoke(StandardWrapperValve.java:233) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardContextValve.invoke(StandardContextValve.java:191) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardHostValve.invoke(StandardHostValve.java:127) at org.apache.catalina.valves.ErrorReportValve.invoke(ErrorReportValve.java:102) at org.apache.catalina.core.StandardEngineValve.invoke(StandardEngineValve.java:109) at org.apache.catalina.connector.CoyoteAdapter.service(CoyoteAdapter.java:298) at org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Processor.process(Http11Processor.java:852) at org.apache.coyote.http11.Http11Protocol$Http11ConnectionHandler.process(Http11Protocol.java:588) at org.apache.tomcat.util.net.JIoEndpoint$Worker.run(JIoEndpoint.java:489) at java.lang.Thread.run(Thread.java:637) My second question is: On the server side, I check the request to see if it is isMultipartContent, and it is. But then when I parseRequest() and store into List<FileItem> items, the items.size() is 0. Here is my Servlet code FileItemFactory factory = new DiskFileItemFactory(); ServletFileUpload upload = new ServletFileUpload(factory); List<FileItem> items = null; if(request.getContentType() != null && request.getContentType().toLowerCase().indexOf("multipart/form-data") > -1){ if(upload.isMultipartContent(request)){ items = upload.parseRequest(request); //It got to here, but items.size is 0. why????????????? } }

  • Create Hello World with RESTful web service and Jersey

    - by Harry Pham
    I follow tutorial here on how to create web service using RESTful web service and Jersey and I get kind of stuck. The code is from HelloWorld3 in the tutorial I linked above. Here is the code. I use Netbean6.8 + glassfish v3 RESTGreeting.java create using JAXB. This class represents the HTML message in Java package com.sun.rest; import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlRootElement; import javax.xml.bind.annotation.XmlElement; @XmlRootElement(name = "restgreeting") public class RESTGreeting { private String message; private String name; /** * Creates new instance of Greeting */ public RESTGreeting() { } /* Create new instance of Greeting * with parameters message and name */ public RESTGreeting( String message, String name) { this.message = message; this.name = name; } /** Getter for message * return value for message * */ @XmlElement public String getMessage() { return message; } public void setMessage(String message) { this.message = message; } /* Getter for name * return name */ @XmlElement public String getName() { return name; } public void setName(String name) { this.name = name; } } HelloGreetingService.java creates a RESTful web service that returns an HTML message package com.sun.rest; import javax.ws.rs.core.Context; import javax.ws.rs.core.UriInfo; import javax.ws.rs.Consumes; import javax.ws.rs.PUT; import javax.ws.rs.Path; import javax.ws.rs.GET; import javax.ws.rs.Produces; import javax.ws.rs.QueryParam; @Path("helloGreeting") public class HelloGreetingService { @Context private UriInfo context; /** Creates a new instance of HelloGreetingService */ public HelloGreetingService() { } /** * Retrieves representation of an instance of com.sun.rest.HelloGreetingService * @return an instance of java.lang.String */ @GET @Produces("text/html") public RESTGreeting getHtml(@QueryParam("name") String name) { return new RESTGreeting( getGreeting(), name); } private String getGreeting() { return "Hello "; } /** * PUT method for updating or creating an instance of HelloGreetingService * @param content representation for the resource * @return an HTTP response with content of the updated or created resource. */ @PUT @Consumes("text/html") public void putHtml(String content) { } } However when i deploy it on Glassfish, and run it. It generate an exception. I try to debug using netbean 6.8, and figure out that this line return new RESTGreeting(getGreeting(), name); in HelloGreetingService.java cause the exception. But not sure why. • Memory leak while asynchronously loading BitmapSource images

    - by harry
    I have a fair few images that I'm loading into a ListBox in my WPF application. Originally I was using GDI to resize the images (the originals take up far too much memory). That was fine, except they were taking about 400ms per image. Not so fine. So in search of another solution I found a method that uses TransformedBitmap (which inherits from BitmapSource). That's great, I thought, I can use that. Except I'm now getting memory leaks somewhere... I'm loading the images asynchronously using a BackgroundWorker like so: BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.ResizeBitmapSource(ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName)); //BitmapSource bs = ImageUtils.GetImageSource(photo.FullName); bs.Freeze(); this.dispatcher.Invoke(new Action(() => { photo.Source = bs; })); GetImageSource just gets the Bitmap from the path and then converts to BitmapSource. Here's the code snippet for ResizeBitmapSource: const int thumbnailSize = 200; int width; int height; if (bs.Width > bs.Height) { width = thumbnailSize; height = (int)(bs.Height * thumbnailSize / bs.Width); } else { height = thumbnailSize; width = (int)(bs.Width * thumbnailSize / bs.Height); } BitmapSource tbBitmap = new TransformedBitmap(bs, new ScaleTransform(width / bs.Width, height / bs.Height, 0, 0)); return tbBitmap; That code is essentially the code from: http://rongchaua.net/blog/c-wpf-fast-image-resize/ Any ideas what could be causing the leak?

  • My PNG has transparency, but after saving with PHP GD, transparency is lost [closed]

    - by Harry Stroker
    I found the solution to my problem. See below the original post and completely at the bottom my solution. I made a stupid mistake :) First I crop an image and then save it to a png file. Right after this, I also show the image. However, the saved png does not have transparency and the shown one has. What is going on? $this->resource = imagecreatefrompng($this->url); imagealphablending($this->resource, false); imagesavealpha($this->resource, true); $newResource = imagecreatetruecolor($destWidth, $destHeight); imagealphablending($newResource, false); imagesavealpha($newResource, true); $resample = imagecopyresampled($newResource,$this->resource,0,0,$srcX1,$srcY1,$destWidth,$destHeight,$srcX2-$srcX1, $srcY2-$srcY1); imagedestroy($this->resource); $this->resource = $newResource; // SAVING imagepng($this->resource, $destination, 100); // SHOWING header('Content-type: image/png'); imagepng($this->resource); The reason I also save the image is for caching. If the script is executed on a png, it saves a cached png. Next time the image is requested, the png file will be shown, but it has lost its transparency. Even stranger: When I save that cached png image as (within Firefox), it saves it suddenly as a jpg, even though the extension was png. Downloading the cached png using chrome and opening it in Photoshop gives the error: "file-format module cannot parse the file". I will show you the shown PNG and the generated PNG: http://www.foodmuseum.nl/SaveProblemTransparency.png Once I try to show that saved PNG with the GD library, it gives me an error. EDIT NO NO NO NO THIS IS NOT A DUPLICATE!!!... I ALREADY USED THEIR SOLUTION. The solution in the supposedly duplicate works for showing my image. But I also try to save it with the exact same resource, but then it has no transparency. EDIT 2 - SOLUTION I found out what the problem was. It was a stupid mistake. The script I provided above were cut out of a class and placed as sequential code, while in real this is not what exactly happened. The save image function: function saveImage($destination,$quality = 90) { $this->loadResource(); switch($extension){ default: case 'JPG': case 'jpg': imagejpeg($this->resource, $destination, $quality); break; case 'gif': imagegif($this->resource, $destination); break; case 'png': imagepng($this->resource, $destination); break; case 'gd2': imagegd2($this->resource, $destination); break; } } However... $extension does not exist. I fixed it by adding: $extension = $this->getExtension($destination);

  • JLabel which hides text after reaching certain length or number of values

    - by Patrick Kiernan
    The purpose of the JLabel is to show who a message is to, like in a mail client e.g. To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry I will have the names in a vector so can build up a string from that and then set the label's text to this string. However it has the potential to get quite long. I was think it might be nice to have something like this: To: John, Mary, Peter, Frank, Tom, Harry, ... Then when you click on the '...', it will expand more or just show a tool tip if you mouse over the ... Yes this idea is stolen from Thunderbird! I am open to other ideas, don't have to use a JLabel. Thanks.

  • Combinatorics grouping problem

    - by Harry Pap
    I'm looking for an algorithm in c# that solves a combinatorics problem: Assume i have the objects 1,2,3,4 I want to get all possible ways to group these object in multiple groups, that each time contain all objects. Order is not important. Example: <1,2,3,4 <1,2 / 3,4 <1,3 / 2,4 <1,4 / 3,2 <1,2,3 / 4 <1,2,4 / 3 <1,3,4 / 2 <2,3,4 / 1 <1 / 2 / 3 / 4 In the first case there is one group that contain all 4 objects. Next are cases with 2 groups that contain all objects in many different ways. The last case is 4 groups, that each one contains only one object.

  • Good "Modelling & Simulation" book recommendations for programmers?

    - by Harry
    I'm a programmer, and have completely forgotten all the advanced engineering Math I studied ~20 years ago at school. I now have an urgent need to learn about Modelling and Simulation. Though the present context is Disease Modelling, I'm not sure if there's such a thing as 'general' modelling and simulation... with concepts / techniques / algorithms that could be used in just about any domain (and not just limited to biology, finance, trade, economic, weather, etc.) Would you have any recommendations that are easy to read by a semi-Math-literate programmer? Basically, I cannot afford to drown myself in too much Math and theory behind M & S, hence this post. Tia...
