  • How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development?

    I'm a web developer, first and foremost. I've been programming for 5 or 6 years now, all of which has been web-based. I'm good at my job, both specifically as a web developer and as a programmer in general. I have decided recently that I would like to learn some desktop programming to to beef up my skill-set. My question is this: How can an experienced web developer transition to desktop development? To elaborate: I have always been a web-developer, and I can design and build web-applications without any problem. When it comes to sitting down with a to learn some desktop oriented programming, my problem isn't with any of the technical matters, but rather coming up with an idea to program. I draw a blank.

  • Get aggregated view of data for entire website with Google Analytics

    I have a website (www.ayrshireminis.com), which has three main sections under different directories, these are: /forum /galleries /contact I would like to have an aggregated view of the data for the whole website, but also for each section. What is the recommended approach for doing this? I believe I can create a web property that includes a profile for the entire website and duplicated filtered profiles, each section having an include filter. This is my gut instinct, but i'd like to know if there is another (better) way to do it? Maybe by having one account that includes a profile for the whole site and another profile with an include filter for the individual sections?

There was a site called Blackle ( http://www.blackle.com/) which "claimed" to save energy by using a black background (it doesn't: see here: http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/4373/how-much-energy-does-displaying-a-webpage-with-a-black-background-actually-save). However, blackle and it's idea of "green website design" interested me, and I was wondering if there are any ways to design an energy saving website that actually save energy. If anyone knows of any, please post them here. If nobody has any, then I guess there isn't a way to save energy through website design...

The site has blogging feature so the members can log in and write blog posts and comment on other posts. The membership is limited to users of an online chess site (freechess.org) and any member of that site can join this site as well. I was wondering, is it needed to put up a terms and conditions for my new website? If so, can I have a model of that? I searched and found some models but they are all for big sites that have e-commerce etc.

    After doing some google search I've came to conclusion that desktop development is shifting to the web development. Recent demos of HTML5 show us 3D accelerated games running inside of a browser. Is it true that desktop development is slowly dying? Would it make more sense learning ASP.NET, Silverlight and HTML5 rather than the desktop side of .NET such as WinForms and WPF. Who is leading current job trends: Software development or Web development? Who will lead in the near future?

    I manage a website that was hacked a few months ago (I wasn't the webmaster then), it was running on Joomla. I have manages to redo the website with custom codes (php/mysql), but it still some visitors still complain that their AV blocks them from viewing the website. I have also cleared the former database and anything related to it, contents and the likes. My website is here I have looked for malwares in Google Webmaster but it says there are non Also I checked with Google Safe Browsing Please what could the problem be.

    Hi all, I'm using Git to manage my website's source code and deployment, and currently have the test and live sites running on the same box. So a few questions: IS this safe? Would a better approach be to have my base repository be the test site repository (with corresponding working directory), and then have that repository push changes to a new live site repository, which has a corresponding working directory to the live site base? This would also allow me to move the production to a different server and keep the deployment chain intact. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a different, clean way to differentiate between test and production deployments when using Git for managing websites? As an additional note in light of Vi's answer, is there a good way to do this that would handle deletions without mucking with the file system much?     Hi, I have designed a new web site. I have hosted it online. I want it to be of the best performance and load pages faster. This website is designed in php 5.0+ using codeigniter. This is using mysql as DB. I have images on it. I am using Nitobi grid for displaying set of records on page. The rest is everything normal page controls. As i am not so very experienced with website performance factors i would like to get suggestions and details on factors that can improve performance of website.   • How does trilicense (mpl,gpl,lgpl) work when you want to use it on public website

    I have tried to search for this answer for quite some time and I have gone through all the various FAQ's and documentation regarding the three licenses; but none of them have been able to answer a question that I have. So I've been working an idea for a website for sometime now and recently I found open source software that has many of components that are similar. It is licensed under the mpl/gpl/lgpl licenses. I think for the most part I understand the ramifications, due to the searches and reading, of what is required if I modify/use and want to distribute the software. But what if I want to modify and not distribute, but use it on a public website that I generate ad revenue from? Is this illegal? It doesn't seem like it is from reading other open source system, say like Drupal, where they allow you to use the software but it's not considered "distribution" if people just go to the website. I know this site may not be the best resource and I've tried some other sites, but I haven't received any clear replies back. I have IT and developer FTE resources available to me but I am trying to build a list of branding, project, and functionality points to review. What guides or lists can/should I use to evaluate this website before I begin adding features, creating new projects, or even redesigning and redeveloping the site? (I have been a webmaster/designer/developer for small, WordPress/Drupal sites for 10 years. I have been an unofficial webmaster (director/content manager) for a large site for 3 years (no direct development control over Sharepoint administration, IIS, or hosting ... but everything else, I did.     Unfortunately i read an article on how to avoid destroying your websites SEO from a redesign article AFTER its was too late! We get ALL our customers from our website as we do not have a shop. Yesterday i did some research into as as i had no idea that a re-design of a website could have such a damaging effect - yes i am a novice and use a WYSIWYG type web builder.
