• I want to "image" 40+ laptops quickly...i welcome suggestions on reliable software

  I often have batches of laptops/PC's to re-image and have tried various methods, but each of them has been problematic and often take more time to troubleshoot than it would have been to image them individually! For example, i have tried to use ghost - i installed ghostcast server on my laptop but the clients never seem to boot to LAN successfully, or it takes an hour to get everything sorted (drivers, LAN, DHCP etc etc). I want a reliable tool that makes imaging quick and easy - and i don't mind paying for it if it's going to work (but obviously free = always good!)

• Running a process at the Windows 7 Welcome Screen

  So here's the scoop: I wrote a tiny C# app a while back that displays the hostname, ip address, imaged date, thaw status (we use DeepFreeze), current domain, and the current date/time, to display on the welcome screen of our Windows 7 lab machines. This was to replace our previous information block, which was set statically at startup and actually embedded text into the background, with something a little more dynamic and functional. The app uses a Timer to update the ip address, deepfreeze status, and clock every second, and it checks to see if a user has logged in and kills itself when it detects such a condition. If we just run it, via our startup script (set via group policy), it holds the script open and the machine never makes it to the login prompt. If we use something like the start or cmd commands to start it off under a separate shell/process, it runs until the startup script finishes, at which point Windows seems to clean up any and all child processes of the script. We're currently able to bypass that using psexec -s -d -i -x to fire it off, which lets it persist after the startup script is completed, but can be incredibly slow, adding anywhere between 5 seconds and over a minute to our startup time. We have experimented with using another C# app to start the process, via the Process class, using WMI Calls (Win32_Process and Win32_ProcessStartup) with various startup flags, etc, but all end with the same result of the script finishing and the info block process getting killed. I tinkered with rewriting the app as a service, but services were never designed to interact with the desktop, let alone the login window, and getting things operating in the right context never really seemed to work out. So for the question: Does anybody have a good way to accomplish this? Launch a task so that it would be independent of the startup script and run on top of the welcome screen?

• FBPermissionDialog bug, showing "Welcome to Facebook" page

  I'm experiencing a weird bug that I can replicate pretty consistently with the FBConnect iPhone SDK, more specifically with the class FBPermissionDialog. The result is that instead of seeing the standard extended permissions dialog, the user is shown this: http://cl.ly/15Lx. The only way around it is for the user to delete the app and reinstall. This is how I have replicated it: On first login, the user is asked for extended permissions on something (the dialog displays correctly). The user declines the permission. User quits the app. The user relaunches the app and since we still need the permission, we ask again. Instead of the permission dialog, the user is shown the "Welcome to Facebook" page. The only way for the user to get asked again is to delete the app and reinstall. Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a workaround? • Awk filtering values between two files when regions intersect (any solutions welcome)

  This is building upon an earlier question Awk conditional filter one file based on another (or other solutions) I have an awk program that outputs a column from rows in a text file 'refGene.txt if values in that row match 2 out of 3 values in another text file. I need to include an additional criteria for finding a match between the two files. The criteria is inclusion if the range of the 2 numberical values specified in each row in file 1 overlap with the range of the two values in a row in refGene.txt. An example of a line in File 1: chr1 10 20 chr2 10 20 and an example line in file 2(refGene.txt) of the matching columns ($3, $5, $ 6): chr1 5 30 Currently the awk program does not treat this as a match because although the first column matches neither the 2nd or 3rd columns do no. But I would like a way to treat this as a match because the region 10-20 in file 1 is WITHIN the range of 5-30 in refGene.txt. However the second line in file 1 should NOT match because the first column does not match, which is necessary. If there is a way to include cases when any of the range in file 1 overlaps with any of the range in refGene.txt that would be really helpful. It should also replace the below conditional statements as it would also find all the cases currently described below. Please let me know if my question is unclear. Any help is really appreciated, thanks it advance! • SMS war continues, ideas welcome

  I am trying to make U9 telit modem send SMS messages. I think I handle protocol correctly, at least, I manage to send them, but only under these circumstances: the native application was executed beforehand, and killed by task manager (without giving it a chance to initialize things). It looks like the supplied application is good at doing certain initialization/deinitialization which is critical. I also see the difference between the two states in output of AT+CIND command. When I am trying to do things on my own, it returns zeroes (including signal quality), but when I run the same command after killing the native application, the output looks reasonable. I am out nearly of ideas. I have tried many things, including attempts to spy at modem's COM ports (didn't work). Haven't tried setting windows hooks to see what the application is trying to get thru. Perhaps you have encountered a similar situation?

  I would like to do the following two things: 1) I would like to play an audio file qhen a nib is loaded 2) After that i would like to switch views when the audio file has finished playing. This will be easy as i just need to call the event that initiates the change of view by using the delegate method -(void) audioPlayerDidFinishPlaying{ //code to change view } I dont know how to to play the audio file when a nib is loaded. Using the AVFoundation framework, I tried doing the following after setting up the audio player and the variables associated with it in the appropriate places i wrote the following: - (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; NSString *soundFilePath = [[NSBundle mainBundle] pathForResource: @"sound" ofType: @"mp3"]; NSURL *fileURL = [[NSURL alloc] initFileURLWithPath: soundFilePath]; AVAudioPlayer *newPlayer = [[AVAudioPlayer alloc] initWithContentsOfURL: fileURL error:nil]; [fileURL release]; self.player = newPlayer; [newPlayer release]; [player prepareToPlay]; [player setDelegate: self]; [player play]; } Although this does not play the file as the viewdidload method gets called before the nib is shown so the audio is never played or heard. What do i need to do so that i can play the audio file AFTER the nib has loaded and is shown on the screen? can someone please help me as ive been working on this for 3 hours now. Thanks in advance.

• How can I display additional boot and shutdown information on the Windows 7 welcome screen?

  There is a small tweak, I believe it is a registry key, that allows to display additional information on the Welcome and Shutting down screens of Windows 7 (and most likely Vista, too). I have activated this tweak on one of my systems; unfortunately I forgot how I did it, and I can't seem to find the website that originally gave me that information. Usually, the Windows 7 welcome screen will just display "Welcome" when logging in. With the tweak activated, my Welcome screen gives status information such as "Loading user settings" or "Preparing desktop". When shutting down, the default screen simply says "Shutting down". With the tweak activated, it gives additional status information such as "Stopping Windows services". This appears the same way that Windows gives information when updates are installed or configured during the startup or shutdown procedure, and I find them quite helpful in getting a feel for what task takes how long during that process. The only setting I was able to find is the Boot log checkbox on the Boot tab of the msconfig application. However, this results in Windows displaying console logs of drivers it is loading, etc., instead of the animated Windows title. This is NOT the setting I am looking for. The "additional boot information" setting that I have activated on this system still displays the regular animated Windows logo, and only replaces the strings displayed on the blue Welcome and Shutdown screens. Could someone direct me to the registry key (or whatever setting) that is used to get this behaviour? • Why is Windows "stuck" on the Welcome screen for so long?

  I use Windows 7 with a laptop specifications processor core (Core i3), 2 GB DDR3 RAM, the remaining capacity on the system partition (25 GB). I do not know why the "welcome screen" takes a long time (about 40 sec), but yesterday only took about 10 sec., I tried to defragment the disk and do a virus & spyware scan with antivirus, but still the "Welcome screen" comes along. How do I get the welcome screen to pass by faster when Windows boots up?

I've done this once by following instructions on a website, now I cant find that site. As I can remember I opened a window by executing a command in "Run". There was a list of user accounts in opened window, then selected a user account and unchecked some option then the user account was gone from welcome screen.. Does anyone aware of this method?

• Welcome files are not loaded! Need help with Railo, mappings and J2EE configuration!

  I have installed a J2EE Server (tried it with Glassfish3, Tomcat6 and Resin4) on Win7 64bit and deployed Railo3.1. I have then added a virtual host to the J2EE server, i.e. Resin: <host host-name="railo"> C:/resin/webapps/railo In the Railo Admin i have added this mapping: Virtual Physical / C:/webapps/ When i access http://railo:8080/ my index.cfm welcome file in C:/webapps/ is loaded (index.cfm is definded in Railos web.xml). When i try to access http://railo:8080/test which contains the same index.cfm i get an 500 Servlet Exception java.io.FileNotFoundException: C:\webapps\test (access denied) (on all J2EE Servers i tried so far). http://railo:8080/test/index.cfm works fine. I already tried to add index.cfm to Resins welcome-file-list in app-default.xml to no avail. I want to be able to access deployed apps without this url: http://localhost:8080/app/ Instead i want to use this: http://app:8080/

  I'm scripting some Windows Server 2008 R2 builds using Power Shell. Some software needs to be installed after the server has joined the domain. Since I want to automate everything, I'm looking to by-pass the domain controllers Welcome page using a registry hack script. I work for a large company and the Active Directory people are unwilling to change group policy. I figure if it's a registry key I can script the change, install the software, replace the key and reboot as the final step. Is there a registry key change that will by-pass the Domain Join Welcome page?

I've just installed VMware Workstation 7.0.1 Build 2276000, after that Win 7 stuck on welcome screen and I have to click on the user image to continue. Before that because I have just one account Win7 just showed welcome screen for a minute and then it went to Win7 desktop automatically, but now I have to click on my account image to continue. Something that I've done : Start Run Msconfig Services Tab Checked Hide all Microsoft Services Disabled all services except Eset Services (Anti Virus) Unfortunately the problem haven't solved yet :( How should I fix it?

The Exadata Partner Community complements the Knowledge Zone by providing partners with information which is specific for the EMEA market (market, references, training, events,..) and it is also a mechanism to share experiences and best practices among partners in marketing, selling, implementing and supporting Exadata projects.   How to join?  For you to be able to register as an individual, your company must be member of the Oracle PartnerNetwork (OPN) and should be working towards becoming OPN Specialized in Exadata. If this is the case then Join the EMEA Exadata Partner Community Now! If your company is not an OPN member yet, then Join Oracle PartnerNetwork first.   How do you get access to the information for the community members? We use two mechanisms to provide and share information: The EMEA Exadata Partner Community blog. This is a public blog and we use it to provide  quick and easy communication to the community members. For detailed or restricted material we will point you to a restricted area. The EMEA Exadata Partner Community Collaborative Workspace. This is an area with restricted access that only community members can access. It contains materials from community events, sales kits, implementation experiences,... reserved to community members. It also allows for partners to share content and collaborate with other community members. In fact, this release has the longest and strongest list of new features in Oracle GoldenGate’s history. The new release brings GoldenGate closer to the Oracle Database while expanding the support for global implementations and heterogeneous systems. It is more secure, more flexible, and faster. We announced the availability of Oracle GoldenGate 11gR2 via a press release. If you haven’t seen it yet, please check it out. As covered in this announcement, there are a variety of improvements in the product: Integrated Capture for Oracle Database: brings Oracle GoldenGate’s Capture process closer to the Oracle Database engine and enables support for Advanced Compression among other benefits. Enhanced Conflict Detection & Resolution, speeds and simplifies the conflict detection and resolution process for Active-Active deployments. Globalization, meaning Oracle GoldenGate can be deployed for databases that use multi-byte/Unicode character sets. Security and Performance Improvements, includes support Federal Information Protection Standard (FIPS). Increased Extensibility by kicking off actions based on an event record in the transaction log or in the Trail file. Integration with Oracle Enterprise Manager 12c , in addition to the Oracle GoldenGate Monitor product.
