Now we’re back to highlight some great reader tips (including a bit of software older than some of our readers). Most of us have to-do lists longer than we can do in a given day (or week!) and a constantly changing set of demands and next-actions. Having a timely and effective reminder system is the difference between dropping the ball and getting things done; how exactly that reminder system plays out, however, varied greatly from reader to reader. • Keyboard Shortcuts no longer working on Ubuntu 12.04 with GNOME 3.4.1 [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: What is the keyboard shortcut to minimise a window to launcher in unity? I upgraded from Ubuntu 11.10 (with Gnome 3.2 I think), to Ubuntu 12.04 with Gnome 3.4.1, and my custom shortcuts have stopped working. Opening up the All Settings - Keyboard - Shortcuts, I can see that my shortcuts are still there. All of the shortcuts that I didn't change are working, and my shortcuts in the custom section are working (eg Ctrl+Alt+G to open gedit), its just that the shortcuts I had customised before the upgrade no longer work. Under Launchers, I had changed "Launch Terminal" to Ctrl+Alt+T, and under Navigation I had changed move to workspace above/below to Shift+Ctrl+Up/Down. Investigating further, it looks like the default shortcuts for these actions work (Ctrl+Alt+Up/ Down moves me up and down workpaces), so I'm guessing that there is some discrepancy between what I am seeing on the Keyboard Settings and what my computer is reading from. Any help would be appreciated.

• How do I implement a "sliding out of / into" effect on a settings menu similar to that in Angry Birds?

  I'm trying to implement a settings menu component similar to that in Angry Birds - a button control that makes an options menu slide out of it and back into it when clicked on. I use scene2d.ui to build the UI components: a Button in a Table to implement the button control, a Table to implement the options menu, and a Stack to lay these out one on top of the other and at this moment I have the following behavior: When the user hits the button control for the first time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 1; When the user hits the button control the second time, then the alpha of the table component is set to 0; And so on. Any ideas how I can get the sliding out of and into effect on user clicks with libgdx? Similar to what Angry Birds provides. Maybe using the TweenEngine, actions, interpolations, combinations of these? Thanks in advance.

• How to create a scripted sequence

  Like countless other video games, I'd like to have scripted sequences in my game. Character 1 says something, the player replies, then a rock falls, that sorta stuff. I could find a way to do it, but I would like to use a common method, assuming there is one. My current thought is to have a separate file for each level of the game that contains all the possible scripted actions for that level. When the corresponding trigger is activated, the function is called. I think early Call of Duty games (up to CoD4) used something similar, but I'm not entirely sure.

• No sound into headphones

  I will make it quick : I have no sound in my headphones when they are plugged in on my Asus F200CA running Ubuntu 14.04, but : I have sound in the laptop speakers when the headphones are plugged out. If I boot up my laptop on a Live USB running Ubuntu 14.04, I have sound in the speakers and in the headphones. If I open pavucontrol, I can "see" sound, but I can't hear it. I already did some of the actions listed here. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04, with Unity, and this bug appeared about a week ago.

• What are the caveats of the event system built on Messenger rather than on classic .NET events?

  MVVM Light and PRISM offer messenger to implement event system. the approximate interface looks like the following one: interface Messanger { void Subscribe<TMessageParam>(Action<TMessageParam> action); void Unsubscribe<TMessageParam>(Action<TMessageParam> action); void Unsubscribe<TMessageParam>(objec actionOwner); void Notify<TMessageParam>(TMessageParam param); } Now this model seems beneficial comparing to classic .net events. It works well with Dependency Injection. Actions are stored as weak references so memory leaks are avioded and unsubscribe is not a must. The only annoyance is the need to declare new TMessageParam for each specific message. But everything comes at a cost. And what I'm really worried about is that I see no shortcomings of this approach. Has anoyne the experience of some troubles with this design pattern?

• Communication between Box2D and libGDX Stage (Scene2D) running in separate threads

  I'm making a physics based 2D game using libGDX and Box2D. I want to move the execution of the simulation out of render thread. I use immutable messages and the BlockingQueue to pass the information about player actions. The Box2D applies forces and runs a frame of simulation. In the next step I would like to sync back the changes and update Scene2D Actors accordingly. Making an immutable copy of the state of the game world and sending it back using Gdx.app.postRunnable() is one option but it seems inefficient. Is there any other option?

• Reduced Tree View in NetBeans IDE 7.2

  Right-click within the Projects window in NetBeans IDE 7.2 and from the "View Java Packages As" menu, you can now choose "Reduced Tree".I never really understood the difference between "Reduced Tree" and the already existing "Tree". But it makes sense when you see it. Here's Reduced Tree view: And here's Tree view, where you can see that the "actions" and "nodes" packages above each have their own top level package nodes, which takes up more space than the above: What's cool is that your selected package view is persisted across restarts of the IDE. To be complete, here's the List view, which is the third option you have in the "View Java Packages As" menu: Seems to me like the new Reduced Tree view combines the best of the Tree view with the best of the List view!   I recently read that Guild Wars 2 uses a system where the creation of quests depends on which actions user took when they were presented another quest. An example was: There might be a quest to protect a person. If users do not take this action, the person might be kidnapped and later there is a quest to rescue this person. Is there any information on whether the creation of these quests is somehow automatic? From the article it sounded like automatically, but from the specific example you could also guess that people just created a task-set where they added conditions (Task 1 taken: OK; Task 1 not taken: Show Task 2). From what I heard about AI they might also have implemented some sort of a huge neural network to make decisions?

  It took me a while to find out that with ubuntu-one I can sync only folders in my home-folder. On all other folders the ubuntu-one - option is available in preferences, but the actual actions are greyed out. the ubuntu-faq is quite clear on that: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuOne/FAQ/CanISyncAFolderOutsideMyHomeFolder But I actually wonder why and if this is going to change and if there is a trick around it (an other one than setting my home to / ;) ) I personally dont have any important data in my home-folder other than the program-configs. • logging with Openbox / Gnome shows empty Desktop

  I installed new 12.04 and Openbox. I logged in with GNOME/Openbox and now after system starts I see only Desktop background image and nothing more. When I right click I can do normal GNOME actions like create folder and nothing more really. alt+f2 doesn't start run window though I managed to create a folder and then with Nautilus start terminal but I really don't know what to do next. Two questions: Why doesn't Openbox start properly? How in this situation I can get back to GDM login screen and choose other option to log in?

• UndoRedo on Nodes (Part 2)

  After the recording of the latest API Design Tip for the upcoming NetBeans Podcast, Jaroslav Tulach helped me with the problem I blogged about yesterday. First he expressed surprise at seeing Undo/Redo work on Nodes, which was never the intention, i.e., that feature was always intended for documents, e.g., the Java editor. However, he then showed me where to find the Properties window in the NetBeans sources, where it is org.netbeans.core.windows.view.ui.NbSheet. It turns out that the Properties window does not have an activated node and hence the Node that implements UndoRedo.Manager is never put in the Lookup. Once we added, on line 303, "this.setActivatedNodes(nodes);", everything worked as expected, i.e., the Undo/Redo actions are now enabled, even when the Properties window is selected: Maybe it means I should file an issue to get that line added to NbSheet?

In my game all the actions happens inside one screen and thus standard parallax effect does not look appropriate. • eth0 not working on startup

  Hi to all, This might sound strange but, working with my Lubuntu 10.04 i've experienced troubles when connecting to my eth0 newtwork. After some googling, i've found out that by writting in the CLI the following command: mii-tool eth0 -F 10baseT-FD and activating the eth0 in the toolbar (by clicking "activate eth0") everything works just fine. Well, up to now, i did not have any problem, because every time i turned on the computer i had to do this, but it was very little effort.But now, i would like to use the machine as a file server, accesing it by ssh, without monitor or keyboard. So, i won't be able to make this actions, and can't do this at startup because mii-tool needs root permissions. So, the question is: Do you know what does that command do, and how can id make that change permanent? Or do you know any other solution for my problem? I hope i was clear! If not, tell me and i'll try to be as clearer as possible. Thanks in advance!

  Do you use E-mail Center Auto-Processing functionality?  Auto-processing rules can be defined which will process an email and initiate actions such as sending an auto-reply, auto-acknowledgement or service request update or creation.  If you're using auto-processing in your environment, then you will have noticed that, when things go wrong, often the only indication that there is an issue is if the email goes to the Supervisor Queue for manual processing instead of being sent.  Oracle Development has developed a script to help you debug when an email is meant to be auto-processed but is failing.   Beyond the obvious something that seams real, realism in games is a hard feature to hit. In some cases, things that are completely impossible in real life are seen as realistic by gamers. For instance, in some FPS you can survive being hit by a fair amount of bullets when in real life one is enough, Newton-defying car drifts, etc. So, in some cases, reductions of life-like actions or consequences implies a bigger sense of realism. The root of this pseudo-philosophical question lies in: I am going to create a engine for battles in an online (browser-based) strategic game. Browser-based means that the battle would not be seen. And i do not know how to approach this realism issue.
