  • FileSystemWatcher does not fire when using C++ std::ofstream

    I'm trying to add a log monitor to an in-house test utility for a windows service I'm working on. The service is written in C++ (win32) and the utility is in .NET (C#) The log monitor works for many other C++ apps I've written, but not for my service. The only main difference I can see is that the other apps use the older ::WriteFile() to output to the log, whereas in the service I'm using std::ofstream like this: std::ofstream logFile; logFile.open("C:\\mylog.log"); logFile << "Hello World!" << std::endl; logFile.flush(); From my utility I use FileSystemWatcher like this: FileSystemWatcher fsw = new FileSystemWatcher(@"C:\", "mylog.log"); fsw.Changed += new FileSystemEventHandler(fsw_Handler); fsw.EnableRaisingEvents = true; But for the service, it never gets any change events as the log is updated. I've found that any example code using FileSystemWatcher I've come across online has the same exact issue as well... But, I know the events should be available because other log monitor apps (like BareTail) work fine with the service log file. I'd rather get the C# code for the utility to just work so it works with anything, but if I have to change the logging code for the service I will. Does anyone see what's going wrong here?

    I'm working on an automatic trading system. What sorts of safe-guards should I have in place? The main idea I have is to have multiple pieces checking each other. I will have a second independent little process which will also connect to the same trading account and monitor simple things, like ensuring the total net position does not go over a certain limit, or that there are no more than N orders in 10 minutes for example, or more than M positions open simultaneously. You can also check that the actual open positions correspond to what the strategy process thinks it actually holds. As a bonus I could run this checker process on a different machine/network provider. Besides the checks in the main strategy, this will ensure that whatever weird bug occurs, nothing really bad can happen. Any other things I should monitor and be aware of?

  • Oracle - timed sampling from v$session_longops

    I am trying to track performance on some procedures that run too slow (and seem to keep getting slower). I am using v$session_longops to track how much work has been done, and I have a query (sofar/((v$session_longops.LAST_UPDATE_TIME-v$session_longops.start_time)*24*60*60)) that tells me the rate at which work is being done. What I'd like to be able to do is capture the rate at which work is being done and how it changes over time. Right now, I just re-execute the query manually, and then copy/paste to Excel. Not very optimal, especially when the phone rings or something else happens to interrupt my sampling frequency. Is there a way to have script in SQL*Plus run a query evern n seconds, spool the results to a file, and then continue doing this until the job ends? (Oracle 10g)

    Hi all I have been asked to monitor MSSQL Server (2005 & 2008) and am wondering what are good metrics to look at? I can access WMI counters but am slightly lost as to how much depth is going to be useful. Currently I have on my list: user connections logins per second latch waits per second total latch wait time dead locks per second errors per second Log and data file sizes I am looking to be able to monitor values that will indicate a degradation of performance on the machine or a potential serious issue. To this end I am also wondering at what values some of these things would be considered normal vs problematic? As I reckon it would probably be a really good question to have answered for the general community I thought i'd court some of you DBA experts out there (I am certainly not one of them!) I am currently launching the program as follows in C#: String plinkConString = ""; // my connection string Process plink = Process.Start(utilityPath + @"\putty.exe", plinkConString); int plinkProcessId = plink.Id; I launch the program and grab its pid in a Windows environment. As Putty/PLink may disconnect from its SSH server at some point and close, what is the best way to monitor how this process is doing in code? Is there a better way to launch this program to monitor its success or failure?

    How can you programmatically measure per-process (or better, per-thread) CPU usage under windows 95, windows 98 and windows ME? If it requires the DDK, where can you obtain that? Please note the Win9x requirement. It's easy on NT. EDIT: I tried installing the Win95/98 version of WMI, but Win32_Process.KernelModeTime and Win32_Process.UserModeTime return Null (as do most Win32_Process properties under win9x).

    Im looking for a way to moniter system statistics, here are my main points of interest: CPU Tempature CPU speed, (Cycles per second) CPU Load (Idle percent) GPU Tempature Some other points of interest: Memory useage Network Load (Traffic Up/Down) My ultimate goal is to write an application that can be used for easily running in the backround, and allow setting many events fr certain actions, for instance When processer temp gets to 56C -> Do _Blank_ etc. So this leaves me two main points. Is there a framework already out there for this sort of thing? If No to #1, How can i go about doing this?

  • Monitor and Terminate Python script based on system resource use

    What is the "right" or "best" way to monitor the system resources a python script is using and terminate it if the resource use exceeds some predetermined values. In my case memory usage is of concern. I am not asking how to measure the system resource use although I am open to suggestions. As a simple example, let's assume I have a function that finds prime numbers less than some large number and adds them to a list based on some condition. I don't know ahead of time how many prime numbers will satisfy the condition so I what to be sure to terminate the function if I use up to much system memory (8gb lets say). I know that there are ways to monitor the size of python objects. What I don't know is the proper way to monitor the size of the list and exit is to just include a size test in the prime function loop and exit if it exceeds 8gb or if there is an "external" way to monitor and exit.

  • Security Exception when using Custom ASP.NET Healthmonitoring event in medium trust

    Hi, I'm using custom healthmonitoring events in ASP.NET We recently moved to a new server with default High Trust Permissions. Literature says that healthmonitoring and custom events should work under Medium or higher trust (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398933.aspx). Problem is - it doesn't. In less than full trust I get a SecurityException saying The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy It works in Full trust or when I remove the inheritance of System.Web.Management.WebErrorEvent. Any suggestions anyone?     My XP machine has become terribly slow and I want to identify the application at fault. It seems to be related to disk access rather than processor hogging. I have seen some tools that made with Java but they seem to be a little crappy. What I want is a tool that sits in the middle as a proxy and does port redirection (which should have configurable listen/redirect ports). Are there any tools work on Windows to do this?

  • Need to know who is hogging my bandwidth?

    I have an ethernet connection to my iMac and with Internet sharing I am broadcasting the wireless network from my mac rather than using a wireless router. I use it to connect other devices wirelessly to the internet. But this makes all the traffic flow through my iMac. I wanted a way to analyze the traffic so that I know what connected devices are hogging the bandwidth at a given time and from which websites? I installed wireshark for mac and played around a little but it seems like an overkill when you first look at it. Can someone please help with few instructions to get what I need or any other way other than using wireshark? Thanks Dev.

    I just deployed to a cluster server, and my delayed_jobs recipe was overwritten in the process. I solved that, delayed_jobs is up and running but can't find the ID of images that are uploaded. Anyone know where I could poke and pry from here? UPDATE: I created a clone application on a single server. And there are no problems. The images on the cluster do show up (occassionally). If I keep clicking on the folders that lead to photos, it will 50% of the time return a 404 with it not being able to find the photo, and the other half it will present the photo. So the problem has got to be with the server interaction between the ActiveRecord through multiple servers.

I know that setting up object access auditing may be an option, but if I use that I then have the problem of trying to match up event log entries to specific files... sounds messy!
