• Need help with gimp 2.8 (cpu not used to full capacity) [closed]

  I know this isn't the right place to ask this question but maybe some one here can point me out to were I should place this question (or help me fix it :)). Since I updated Gimp to 2.8 (and let me start by saying how happy I am with the new gimp) I have notice that Gimp only uses 35% max of my CPU power. I have tried changing settings, assigning only one CPU to Gimp (both in gimp preference and in windblows task manager). No matter what settings I choose it only uses 35% of the cpu. If I assign just one Core to it then Gimp will use 100% of that core (which is about 35% of a three core processor I have. Any thoughts? I am using Windblows 7 64 bit, gimp 2.8.0, AMD a6-3500 cpu. I also use Ubuntu (am going to see if it works the same there). Any help would be great.

• Becoming an expert vs boredom [closed]

  I am a college student, and I love to program, period. I code all kinds of things in different kinds of languages. Although I enjoy programming, I have an extremely hard time sticking to one project for a long time. I attribute this shortcoming to my high level of curiosity, exploring different technologies, languages, libraries, etc. What would be best? Should I settle down more and spend time on becoming an expert in one or two programming fields, or should I be more of a jack of all trades, trying out all kinds of new technologies, languages, programming methods, etc.? I'm guessing that somewhere in the middle would be best. I'm always amazed at how many developers are able to create one or two projects, and develop on them for years. What techniques do you guys employ to help you stay focused on a project?

  I work as a programmer for a mid-sized company (about 500 employees) in the medical industry. Before that I worked at a custom software development/consulting company. At both companies programmers were never officially given time to continue their education through taking classes, reading books or blogs, or doing research relevant to the job. At the software development company we were offered some money to pay for a class, but not offered any time off of work to take the class. I have been wondering, do most employers of programmers give time off of work to take a class, read a book, or do job related research? By time off of work I just mean some period of time where you can stop development; it does not have to mean leaving the office. I would be grateful to hear about everyone's experience with this.

This is especially true for game development. That being said, if you are designing a game from scratch from engine to front end, what steps should be taken in order?   I'm using an ajax registration form plugin for my website and I'm thinking to implement also Paypal. Here is how I want to implement it : I have 3 labels ( Name, Phone, Email, ) and a " Buy " button. After the user is typing his name, phone and email they click on "Buy" and they will be redirected to the paypal payment page or if it's possible to stay on the same page. Probably, what I need to know is how to make the "Buy " only after the forms ( name, phone, email ) are validated.   i just upgraded my Ubuntu to 12.10 and i noticed that i get this message The location is not a folder whenever i try to access a mounted media (USB or even my other partitions). I am now unable to view content on my usb pendrive or other partitions. already tried sudo apt-get remove exo-utils with no luck because it says it is not installed. Can anyone help me?   I got a brain teaser for you - it's not as simple as it sounds so please read and try to solve the issue. Before you ask if it's homework - it's not! I just wish to see if there's an elegant way of solving this. Here's the issue: X-number of friends want's to go to the cinema and wish to be seated in the best available groups. Best case is that everyone sits together and worst case is that everyone sits alone. Fewer groups are preferred over more groups. Sitting alone is least preferred. Input is the number of people going to the cinema and output should be an array of integer arrays that contains: Ordered combinations (most preferred are first) Number of people in each group Below are some examples of number of people going to the cinema and a list of preferred combinations these people can be seated: 1 person: 1 2 persons: 2, 1+1 3 persons: 3, 2+1, 1+1+1 4 persons: 4, 2+2, 3+1, 2+1+1, 1+1+1+1 5 persons: 5, 3+2, 4+1, 2+2+1, 3+1+1, 2+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1 6 persons: 6, 3+3, 4+2, 2+2+2, 5+1, 3+2+1, 2+2+1+1, 2+1+1+1+1, 1+1+1+1+1+1 Example with more than 7 persons explodes in combinations but I think you get the point by now. • The type of programmer I want to be [closed]

  I'm an undergraduate Software Engineer student, although I've decided that pure programming is what I want to do for the rest of my life. The thing is that programming is a vast field and although most of its aspects are extremely interesting, soon or later I'll have to choose one (?) to focus on. I have several ideas on small projects I'd like to develop this summer, having in mind that this will gain me some experience and, in the best scenario, some cash. But the most important reason I'd like to develop something close to “professional” is to give myself direction on what I want to do as a programmer. One path is that of the Web Programmer. I enjoy PHP and MySQL, as well as HTML and CSS, although I don't really like ASP.NET. I can see myself writing web apps, using the above technologies, as well as XML and Javascript. I also have a neat idea on a Facebook app. The other path is that of the Desktop Programmer. This is a little more complicated cause I really-really enjoy high level languages such as Java and Python but not the low level ones, such as C. I use both Linux and Windows for the last 6 years and I like their latest DEs (meaning Gnome Shell and Metro). I can see myself writing desktop applications for both OSs as long as it means high level programming. Ideally I'd like being able to help the development of GNOME. The last path that interests me is the path of the Smartphone Programmer. I have created some sample applications on Android and due to Java I found it a quite interesting experience. I can also see myself as an independent smartphone developer. These 3 paths seem equally interesting at the moment due to the shallowness of my experience, I guess. I know that I should spend time with all of them and then choose the right one for me but I'd like to know what are the pros and cons in terms of learning curve, fun, job finding and of course financial rewards with each of these paths. I have fair or basic understanding of the languages/technologies I described earlier and this question will help me choose where to focus, at least for now.
