• How hard it will be for the programmer to learn MS SSRS adn SSIS [closed]

  I have a programming background in php/python/java for 5 years and I know MySQL and PostgreSQL. Currently in our company the MSQL Business Intelligence person is leaving his job in 4 months. I am thinking of trying to go to his place, at least try as I want to move in Business Intelligence field in SSRS and SSIS. I just want to know that is it possible for me to get my head around those things in 4 months because I have no idea how they work and how hard it will be for me to pick up those things. Can I do that? I just want to know from experienced people if I can move towards that field? At least how should I start? In my area there are shortages of person, so once I know the stuff I can get into junior jobs easily but I want to know from experienced people.

• My sound is not working, so I'm going to reinstall FYI [closed]

  I've had trouble getting the sound to work in Ubuntu 12.04 I'm running an Acer Aspire 5739g laptop. This is using a clean install. This wasn't a problem when ubuntu first installed. Rather, it was when I ran the updates that it stopped working. I already tried the suggestions on the ubuntu sites and other similar queries, and they haven't fixed it. Something in the updates is making my sound not work. Edit: It turns out that this might be a bug (the sound issue, first paragraph). After reinstall, it happened again (it's not caused by updates at all, or any software, because I fixed it now w/o reinstall). It seems like I replicated it as follows: I changed auto-hide in the behavior tab of Appearance settings by turning it on, and setting the sensitivity to below the recommended setting. Then instead of restarting, I just logged out and back in. The sound stopped working again. I set the behavior settings to default, restarted, and now it's back to normal. Not sure if it's due to only logging out (and not restarting) or b/c I set my sensitivity to a low setting. Not sure if this helps anyone, but thought I'd mention it.

  I am just starting up a small website development business and one of the issues I am having is remembering passwords and account information for clients hosting, cpanel, ftp accounts etc. I was wondering what is the most suitable system / industry standard for controlling such information? Pretty marginal on the close there... I read the FAQ and I felt list this could be a common issue for webmasters, its defiantly not a coding questions so stackoverflow is out of the question and its not a broad question its focused on one particular aspect of being a webmaster.

  I'm a huge fan of running programs from my portable hard drive: it means I always have my favorite tools no matter what computer I'm on. Sadly, development tools seem to be hard to get portable at times. I recently realized that the "portable" version of MinGW I was using off my USB drive was actually interfering with a locally installed version of MinGW, so sometimes even the tools you think are portable, aren't. So what are the best portable development tools that you've used? What runs well on a portable media, leaves the host machine clean, and generally makes moving around easier for you?

  Hi there i installed moodle to a directory with softaculous as it doesn't allow installing to subdomain, after install I created a subdomain and pointed the destination (of subdomain) to previously created moodle directory, now when I go to the subdomain.example.com it says Incorrect access detected, this server may be accessed only through "http://example.com/moodle" address, sorry. Please notify server administrator. Any suggestions much appreciated! I must be doing something wrong, when installing it was very similar to these instructions

• Ubuntu 12.10 hotkeys not working properly [closed]

  A couple of weeks ago, I ran a distribution upgrade from 12.04 to 12.10. Unfortunately, something has seemed to happen with the hotkeys on the system. At first, I thought that maybe this was just a glitch with the global hotkeys. That didn't turn out to be the case, as the custom hotkey I added into the Ubuntu settings works for my editor. The only default hotkey that seems to have a problem launching is CTRL+ALT+T (Terminal). This wasn't such a big issue to begin with, because I can always just drag the Terminal to my launcher and launch it from there. However, I was on Chrome earlier and tried to do SHIFT+CTRL+DEL to clear the history and it failed. I then tried to do SHIFT+ESC, just to see if the hotkey for the task manager would work.. and it did. I also thought it could be something with the "CTRL" key, since SHIFT+ESC works, but SHIFT+CTRL+DEL doesn't. That didn't turn out to be the case either, as keys like CTRL+ALT+DEL (logout) work perfectly fine. Not quite sure how to go about this, and I haven't found any errors in any of /var/log that raises any suspicion.

Lately I have been trying to evaluate the way I handle everything besides writing code and picking nice colors etc. I am trying to come up with a decent contract which keeps me safe and makes sure I get paid and so on. I would like to hear from more experienced people how they handle clients. How do you agree on what is supposed to be delivered? Is it a good idea to make sure you get paid say 30% before doing any work at all? Any other helpful tips or routines you can think of are of course gratefully appreciated.

• Thinking about open-sourcing quiz project [closed]

  I was thinking about starting an open source project. I have a few projects that might work ok as an open project but thought I might dip my toe into the water with a simple quiz project. The idea is you can add questions to a quiz, arrange questions by topic, difficulty or location. Users would hopefully get an interesting quiz, tuned to their ability. At the end they'd get a score and hopefully they might provide either some feedback on the questions or even supply a few questions of their own. I couldn't see a similar project (fame's last words). I have a basic version of the project that gives the user a bunch of questions to answer in 10 minutes. It doesn't currently group the questions into topics, and no feedback is taken. I've also been told the graphical questions don't work on Ipads for some reason. Would this be a suitable project to go open source? I did find various quiz's out there but all seemed rather narrowly focused. I really wanted something that could cover any type of question on any type of subject. I prefer to keep the questions in MySQL but I could see how this might make it more difficult for others to get on board - should I move to data files?   I'm not sure if this is the right place but I am after some general advice on a feature I am looking to implement on my website. The website I have is a Wedding Directory. Here, companies can advertise in the form of a directory listing. This listing contains the company details - such as what they do and how you can contact them. There are three packages available - Basic package is free and Silver and Gold packages are charged for. Now in order to further enhance the directory, I want to enable customer reviews for each listing. This is basically whereby customers who have used a particular company's service can write a review (and rate out of 5) of their experience. The dilemma I face is that if customers are to be paying for their listings then surely they will expect to not have content on their listing that would tarnish their reputation (i.e. negative reviews). But at the same time I want to be impartial and help my site visitors to make informed choices on which companies to book when arranging their weddings. Of course I will exercise my ability to remove offensive or fake reviews but I do not want to be removing reviews just to satisfy my clients. Suppose a client pays me a premium fee to have their listing on my front page and at the top of the listings. Now suppose that client gets lost of negative reviews - the fact that they have increased visibility means that they will also get increased bad publicity. This in turn means they won't renew their package and will most likely request the listing to be taken down. So, how can I get the right balance here and keep everyone happy?

I was wondering what professional JS developers use to write and test their code: Do they use a good text editor with syntax high-lighting + autocompletion, hit F5 in the browser to reload the page every time they make a change, and use some add-on in the browser to investigate errors? Or are there full-fledged IDE's similar to MS VisualStudio for non-web languages?

  Possible Duplicate: Data input validation - Where? How much? I'm a new PHP developer and am into Powershell quite a bit but this question is language agnostic. I've been questioning my code quite a bit lately thinking about how many nets I should setup to catch exceptions, verify results, etc. I realize that I could go crazy trying to verify each and every line of code but at the same time I want the code as resilient as possible. I'm not talking about user input but verifying output from methods. Is there some standard or rule of thumb to go by when deciding when and where to do data validation?

  I own a domain, let's call it mydomain.com. I need to host the following off it: forums.mydomain.com www.mydomain.com blog.mydomain.com objects.mydomain.com I believe I can get 5 static IPs. I plan on assigning one each to those four hosts. Then I need to adhoc create names, all below objects.mydomain.com. For instance: one.objects.mydomain.com two.objects.mydomain.com three.objects.mydomain.com I need to create these names programatically, and without human intervention. Preferably, they would not get their own IPs. They would use the IP of objects.mydomain.com. First question: Does this mean that I need to host my own DNS? Second question: I'm using Apache as a web server. What does the virtual host configuration look like?   Its been 2 years since graduating from uni and working in a IT solutions company as a programmer. My initial year was particularly exciting when we were trying to get a fresh product up to speed. The product has now gone live and are in the maintenance phase. My current day job involves merely bug fixing and also small designing/implementing change requests and also helping resolve issues faced from clients. Slowly I feel a little 'normal' in my role.   DISCLAIMER: I know that this might be a "regional" question but I'm also asking for help as far as what resources to use to determine my decision. I'm currently talking to a recruiter for a game developer in the SF Bay area. I work in a relatively low-cost area in the south. I really want to get into game development but my current career is general web development. I'm very interested in taking the job, but my concern is that the amount they're willing to pay might be a relative pay cut. Here are some factors: It's not an entry-level position, the title is Senior Software Engineer. I have 5+ years of experience. The calculators online tell me that I should be expecting around 2x my current pay rate(http://www.bestplaces.net/col/). My current pay is in the mid $60k/yr, so that's like 120-130k. The recruiter told me at my experience level I can expect about $90-100/yr, and that those cost of living calculators were way off. The benefits will definitely be better, it's much larger company (help with commuting, catered meals, etc). But is the recruiter trying to give me a snow job on the pay scale, or is that a reasonable change from a smallish town in the south to somewhere in the SF bay area? How can I find this out? Glassdoor and Payscale seem to say "senior software developers" in that area make around 110 in median salary, but Payscale says it's closer to $135k, that range seems pretty large.

• Help deciding on an area of study for a PhD [closed]

  I am going to start a PhD in about 1 year. My undergraduate degree is in computer science and my master's is in artificial intelligence. I want to get ideas about what's going to be hot in say 5 years i.e. what could I spend 3-4 years studying to potentially have expertise that will be applicable to industry and the computing world ? Impossible to answer factually but some ideas and thoughts would be great. I have narrowed my ideas down to AI (yes, even more AI) and information security. AI seems to becoming popular again but security is always a going to be useful. From a career point of view, if I were to stay working in software development then this might actually be the best move but I've always wanted to do a PhD! Many thanks :).
