• Expanding RAID 1 array size (Adaptec 1420SA controller)

  I have an Adaptec 1420SA controller in server and RAID 1 array created. The old disks slowly started to report S.M.A.R.T errors so I replaced first one, rebuild array and then other one and rebuild the array again. But the new drives are bigger, so I'd like to expand the array to use full disk capacity. Is it somehow possible? In the Adaptec configuration utility, after POST, I didn't found anything that could do it. I still have the old drives, if it helps. The array is used for system (Windows 2008 R2 SP1) booting. • How do I catalog files on several external hard drives that I want to store off-line? OSX

  My partner, an artist, has more than 10 external hardisks both USB and firewire and every 2-3 months a new one has to be added (She's working with videos and pictures) currently its 10TB and growing so too much for a affordable NAS. Right now the files are not indexed and I think can not be searched with spotlight because not all drives can be connected at the same time. So if she wants to search for a file, she has to guess which disk/disks (based mostly on the date) and then search several drives. Now I'm looking for a solution to index/catalog the drives, something like GentibusCD Cathy Disclib (all these solutions are unfortunately Windows only) Is there any software for OSX that will catalog all the hard drives, so she can search the catalog, find the files, and get the ID of the disk / disk name that has the content? Preferably something with a GUI so my partner can also use it easily Preferably with Thumbnails for pictures/videos (But even an equivalent to "tree /F /A" would be better than nothing)

• How do I determine which HD is involved in the Event Viewer?

  My PC apparently crashed before I came home from work (so my daugthers tell me; they rebooted it). The first thing I did, after it came up, was got into the Event Viewer to see what it said. Several hours before they rebooted it, there's a message in the event viewer that says: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk5\DR5 I've no idea what that means. I got into Computer Manager, to take a look at the disks on my machine. There's only 1 hard drive, and a few slots for microSD, etc, but none of them are labeled "Harddisk5", nor is there anything there labeled "DR5". How do I determine what, if anything, those are? Could they be USB drives that my daughters used?

• SAN/NAS with high availability?

  I have two servers that I plan to use for storage. Each of them has a few SATA disks directly attached. I want the storage to be available even if one of the storage servers is down (preferably the clients wouldn't even notice that the fail-over, although I'm not sure if this is possible). The clients may access the storage via NFS and samba, but this is not a must; I could use something else if needed. I found this guide, Installing and Configuring Openfiler with DRBD and Heartbeat, which apparently does the thing I want. It relies on three components, Openfiler, DRBD, and Heartbeat, and all three of them need to be configured separately. I'm wondering are there simpler solutions? Is using DRBD+Heartbeat the best practice for a situation like mine? I'm also interested to know if there are alternatives that don't depend on DRBD.

  I have some questions about raid card. Use LSI MegaRAID® SAS 9260-8i raid card as a example. There is only two connection ports on the raid card, and they provide two cables that can connect 8 SAS/SATA storages. The document say it can connect "Maximum 32 drives per controller", I want to know how can I connect more than 8 hard disks with this card. Is that they say "Eight internal SATA+SAS ports" means they provide two cables which can connect 8 hard drives, but you can use other way to connect Maximum 32 drives? The other question. I see host bus adapter has raid integrated , so what is the difference between host bus adapter and raid card. Are they the same? I also know is SAS/SATA Expander's function only to connect more hard drives? Thanks in advance.

The disks are managed by SVM and "metadb" is showing the flags as "a" Are there any tests or indications as to check/see if the disk is actually failing or was that error message initiated by something else.   I am setting up a server. I already have rented a machine running centOS 6 but I have run into a bit of a technical problem with configuring the server software: The server will have some files that it will try to read/write to them but what I need is a way to have a blueprint of these files and everytime the server restarts the files that it used get deleted and replaced by the blueprints. I have heared of a RAM disks or Virtual File Systems but didnt quite understand how they work or how to set them up. The server software is written in java which means bash commands can be run from it. I cannot modify what happens when the server shuts down entirely what I can do is run a command before the server runs the final shutdown save

  Most companies I have worked at have had either a collection of disks or a network share with the installs of the commonly used software in them. This is to allow the IT dept and skilled users to install the software they need on their work machines very easily. However some users would see this as an opportunity to get "free" software for their home machines. I've seen the draconian approach of locking the machine down completely, but that does not work well (in my view - if you disagree feel free to comment on it) because You add so much extra work to IT Users get that big brother feeling So how do you find a way to prevent users from taking home software but still allowing them to install what they need? You can make the assumption that most of the users in the organisations I work in are smart enough to install software, I'm not worried about the tea lady here.

• Lustre - is this bad form?

  Im going to be consolidating several 'server rooms' into a single installation soon. Part of this effort will be finding a home for 5Tb (and growing) of files / logs. To this end Im looking at Lustre and appreciating its ability to scale. The big vendors want to sell me a $20K SAN to manage this but Im wondering about buying several iSCSI units (like this http://www.asacomputers.com/3U-iSCSI-Solution.html) and using VMs for the OSS machines. This would let me fail-over to cover problems and not require a dedicated system for each OSS. Given articles like this (http://h30565.www3.hp.com/t5/Feature-Articles/RAID-Is-Dead-Long-Live-RAID/ba-p/1422) that talk about how RAID is not keeping up with drive density Im leaning towards more disks with lower capacity each. Again - some akin to the iSCSI array above. Tell me why this is a terrible idea. Do I really need to invest in a PE710 for each OSS/OST?

  I have had to reinstall Home Server on my server and I would now like to restore it back to the state it was the last moment it stopped. I have the hard drive in a state it was last in, which is a small 250 gb hard disk. I have now installed 1.5tb hard disks, and installed a full licenced copy, as the original copy was a trial version. So I'm in a state where I have a new install, I have one of the old drives plugged in, but I can't transfer the old backups across, how do I do this?

• Can I change from BIOS IDE mode to AHCI mode at any time?

  Currently my Windows 7 computer is crashing during startup, after loading the AMD achix64s.sys driver, if I enable BIOS AHCI mode for the disks. It boots fine with IDE mode. Since I need my computer working, I am wondering if I can just use IDE mode for now, and later change to AHCI mode, when I figure out what is wrong. Background: I was running RAID mode, which needed additional drivers to install/boot Windows. But the MoBo RAID is flaky so I'm trying to switch to using a Windows mirrored volume instead - for that I expected to use AHCI mode.

• Upgrading HP DL185 G5 8LFF, is using a Dell J1520 4-Drop SATA Adapter possible?

  The HP DL185 G5 8LFF model supports 8 3.5" drives and 1 optical drive. However, instead of the optical drive, I'd like to have 2x 2.5" drives instead. The problem is that the PSU has no more SATA power cables (even though the motherboard has 4 additional SATA data ports). The PSU does have a free 10-pin connector and it looks like the J1520 cable from Dell would fit the bill. Link to cable description Does anyone have any experience using these cables? Are they safe? Any other ideas for adding the disks to the server if I don't use the cable? Thanks!

• RAID 1 Mirror Error with Two Western Digital 500GB Drives

  I have Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit installed on a Western Digital 500GB drive (WD5000BEVT-22ZAT0) that was partitioned automatically by Windows as 100MB System Reserved and 465.66GB drive C. There is also an unallocated second Western Digital 500GB drive (WD5000BPVT-22HXZT1) that I want to use for RAID 1 to mirror the first drive but I get an error message stating “ALL DISKS HOLDING EXTENTS FOR A GIVEN VOLUME MUST HAVE THE SAME SECTOR SIZE, AND THE SECTOR SIZE MUST BE VALID.” I uninstalled Windows patch KB-982018 but I still get the same error message. Could you please let me know how to resolve this? Thanks.

  Our organization is load testing our application using virtual servers via Hyper-V to see what the user load can be using fair equipment on a single box setup. The developer group questioned the validity of the tests given the normal use of the box by the other virtual machines. IT admins answered that it is an acceptable platform to load test on because it has its own CPUs, memory and disks allocated. Is their answer mostly correct? What hardware factors may be considered bottle necks given the other virtual machines when testing our application? For example, would bus speed be a concern or network IO? The application consists of a windows service written using the 4.0 .NET Framework and SQL Server 2008 R2.

  Dear people, My Small Business Server 2003 failed to install this update SP2 for WSUS3.0. The update is not available for rollback. WSUS 3.0 is not to be found in my software configscreen or startup menu. Some files have been deleted from the hard drive and last but not least. The service will not run and .NET runtime errors keep flooding my logs. Question. How to remove an update or program which is not listed in add/remove software anymore. I am hesitant to roll back to a system restore point since exchange is running on the same disks.... :)

• Post raid5 setup reboot shows single hard drive failure on ubuntu 12.10?

  I just set up raid 5 on linux using three HDDs as per a guide. It all went fine until when I rebooted I got the following text: http://i.stack.imgur.com/Zsfjk.jpg. Does this mean one of my HDDs has failed? How do I check if any of them are failing? I tried using smartctl and didn't see any issues. Or is it nothing to do with failure and something else altogether? I would like to get the raid 5 working again but I'm not sure where to go from here. I'm using ubuntu 12.10 and the three raid disks each have a gpt partition with a single full size partition of filesystem type ext4. Note I only got an error on reboot not while I was creating the raid array which went fine. Thanks.

• mysql error code 13 on windows xampp caused by lower case table names = 0

  I can import an sql (from test linux server mysql) file if the lower case setting is removed. But then the table names are lower case and the web site doesn't work. Originally it was working (my.ini with the lower case settings), I then exported to a linux server, it was working there. Now importing back to my windows (xampp setup) fails. After wild goose chase looking at disks and permissions, I found that if I remove the lower_case_table_names=0, the import works! But I need the case sensitive command so that I can deploy on the linux server.

• How can I mount an image from an external HDD to a partition within the host system?

  I'm currently using Acronis True Image Home 2010 and I have created an image of my Windows 7 OS. I copied it to my external HDD and I repartitioned my other PC's HDD. The primary partition houses the Windows Xp system which also has Acronis installed. The new partition is logical. Whenever I try to go through the steps on "Clone Disk" the program would not let me select a destination drive if I choose the external HDD as the source. I also did not know that it you can only select disks instead of partitions as a source or destination. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

• Windows Home Server is showing signs of death

  I have a Windows Home Server (HP EX485 MediaSmart Home Server) and it started acting up about 4 weeks ago and a few days ago complained of a corrupt database and would I like to try and recover it? Yes, I would but I ended up losing all backups. I have to reboot it frequently for the client machines to be able to see it. I have 4 hard disks in the computer. I suspect that the primary hard disk is going bad. My first question: How can I confirm if it's going bad or not? I'm thinking about removing the primary disk and replacing it with one of the others and reloading the OS with the server restore disk. I know that I'll lose everything (but I recently did anyway) but is there any other reason why I should not do this?

• Windows 7 Refuses To Install To A Partition

  I have 4 HDDs in my PC on a Gigabyte EP45-UD3 rev1.0 motherboard on SATA ports 0-3 and running AHCI mode. Windows 7 refuses to let me install to any partitions or disks I select saying Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition. I will get to the bottom of this, after I sacrifice my Friday nights and weekends to Microsoft (they don't just want my money, they want my soul). Keep tuned, if no one has the answer, I will find one. I suspect I have to rip out 3 HDDs so that the n00bs at Microsoft can actually deal with spinning media. Really angers me how paid-for-products are so inferior to Linux they don't even qualify to be called "software".

• FreeBSD 9 (amd64) reboot/shutdown process is very slow

  I have a Dell Poweredge 2900 III with FreeBSD 9 (amd64), the server uses mfi wich handles a raid10, I had to reboot the server, but notice that either when rebooting or shutting down the server, something is going wrong, besides taking to much time to reboot/shutdown, after rebooting I notice that that some ldap instances within some jails could'nt start and this was because the database was corrupted. This make me think that probably something was wrong with the disks or mfi card, but checking the disk array / logs everything seems to be working fine. My set up is something like this: Host server has the minimum base of FreeBSD 9 amd64, within I create some jails, the ones contain services like mysql, email, and some others ldap. With FreeBSD 7 and 8 I didn't notice this behavior but with FreeBSD 9 something is not working well. I did a clean installation of FreeBSD 9 and root filesystem is using ZFS.   I'm trying to make a 250G USB hard disk Ubuntu-bootable on a Compaq nc6220 laptop. I've removed all other disks, so /dev/sda (the USB disk) is the only disk other than CDROM. I installed Ubuntu 9.10 to this disk from the live CD, putting the bootloader on /dev/sda . The default system couldn't be booted, and nothing I did in the Grub menu/cmdline helped. So I chrooted onto the disk and did grub-install /dev/sda. That seemed to work fine, but Grub (1.97 beta 4) keeps coming up with error: out of disk Even when I drop to the command line to do something simple like ls or help, it's always the same error message. Any hints for resolving this, please?

• How to force Windows to call the partition it installs on C:?

  I'm going to install Windows XP from a CD and want to make sure it calls the partition it lands on C:. The target partition is the first one on a SATA disk, which is not the first one in my computer. There's no IDE disk there. I don't think I can swap the disks, as I'm using a fake RAID and really don't want to get problems with it. The target partition is on a normal disk. I know it may be unimportant, but I don't want to run in any problems I can avoid. I've seen a question slightly related to it, but I'm not going to install from a USB.
