  • Constantly getting ...DeviceMonitor] Failed to start monitoring

    I find that after running or debugging my application a few times using eclipse, that I get the above output in my console (in red) and I get no feedback from Dalvik as to the connection status to my phone is going. My application will still debug etc. I just get nothing useful in my Console. Any ideas how to fix this? It appears intermittent. It starts doing it after a few minutes, continues to do it for quite a while and occasionally goes away again. This has happened on my last laptop and now on my new laptop with a completely fresh install etc.

  • monitoring streaming server and display throughput

    Scenario: laptop (running RHEL 5.3 / 5.4) with Wi-Fi allowing incoming connections (the laptop is the DHCP server and default gateway of any device that connects to it). The laptop has a streaming server installed (my app). I need to program an app that could monitor this link (device / streaming server) and display the throughput. More importantly, I need this app to be able to throttle the throughput. Think WANem but as an app, or netlimiter but (way) simpler and for RHEL. If you need clarifications, let me know. is there a library that could help me? i've done mostly windows business applications programming, and i have no clue about this stuff. please help me to get started!

I need to write the application that collects some statistics from using of big set of applications (app names read from configuration file). My application works as Service and should remember moments of switching of activities between foreground and background. Set of applications is sufficiently big and most part of these applications will never work on certain phone.

  • Advanced Registry Monitoring

    I'm attempting to create a small utility to watch for the creation (or modification) of a specific registry key, and to kill the process responsible for causing that registry modification. I have had success in watching the changes to the registry via a class called 'RegistryMonitor', however it does not give you any information on what process initiated the registry call, through some googling I found that a library called 'EasyHook' should be able to do what I want, but all the documentation states that its designed for a per-application hook. The program itself is a temporary security patch, until our vendors come out with an official security update. As best I can tell there isn't a way to do exactly what I want to accomplish from C#, which is the only language I can comfortable write, test and execute software in. Any help on this would be appreciated I'm considering watching the registry changes via the program I already have, then if the change is discovered (the pc is already infected) running RKill and locking down the PC to prevent the issue from getting any worse

  • How to protect/monitor your site from crawling by malicious user

    Situation: Site with content protected by username/password (not all controlled since they can be trial/test users) a normal search engine can't get at it because of username/password restrictions a malicious user can still login and pass the session cookie to a "wget -r" or something else. The question would be what is the best solution to monitor such activity and respond to it (considering the site policy is no-crawling/scraping allowed) I can think of some options: Set up some traffic monitoring solution to limit the number of requests for a given user/IP. Related to the first point: Automatically block some user-agents (Evil :)) Set up a hidden link that when accessed logs out the user and disables his account. (Presumably this would not be accessed by a normal user since he wouldn't see it to click it, but a bot will crawl all links.) For point 1. do you know of a good already-implemented solution? Any experiences with it? One problem would be that some false positives might show up for very active but human users. For point 3: do you think this is really evil? Or do you see any possible problems with it? Also accepting other suggestions.

    What disorders and diseases commonly afflict programmers? The only one I can think of is the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, but up to now, I still don't know anybody who has suffered from it. Please only post those disorders and diseases that you or some other programmer you personally know have acquired from programming. Edit: I was just recently diagnosed with GERD, which was caused by my excessive amount coffee, which stimulate gastric acid secretion that causes the thinning of the esophagus. Just imagine yourself without an esophagus just because you drank too much coffee. That's for drinking an average of 3 mugs of coffee a day on weekdays. On weekends, one liter a day.

  • How do I know if have RSI or carpal tunnel?

    I feel that this is a much better place to ask this than a medical forum, we have ~250 people who spent most of their day in front of a computer. Does anyone here have any experience with such injuries? How/when did you find out? What did you do (if anything)? I don't know if I have the RSI, but I can tell you that I can "crack" my wrist and almost any one of my fingers whenever I want. Also, my wrist sometimes hurts me when I type for a very long time (especially on a laptop keyboard I have very long fingers so the palm is in an uncomfortable position most of the time) Is this normal? I bought a Logitech Wave keyboard, obviously it feels much better than the laptop keyboard, but I can't really tell if it helps the "cracking" and my wrist still sometimes hurts.

  • Is it practical to program with your feet?

    Has anyone tried using foot pedals in addition to the traditional keyboard and mouse combo to improve your effectiveness in the editor? Any actual experiences out there? Does it work, or is it just for carpal tunnel relief? I found one blog entry from a programmer who actually tried it: So now I can type using my feet for most of the modifier keys. I am using the pedals as I type this. I am still getting used to them, but the burning in my left wrist has definitely reduced. I think I can also type a little faster, but I am too lazy to do the speed tests with and without the pedals to verify this. On the negative side: Working out where to put your feet when you aren’t typing can be a little awkward. The pedals tend to move around the carpet, despite being metal and quite heavy. Some small spikes might have helped. Although the travel on the pedals is small, they are surprisingly stiff. Another programmer's experience: Anybody with hand pain must get foot pedals, since they can remove a tremendous load from your hands. I have two foot pedals, and use one for the SHIFT key, and the other for the CONTROL key. (I still type META by hand.) I have found that in the process of using the Emacs text editor to compose computer programs, I tend to use the SHIFT, CONTROL and META keys constantly, and it is easy to remove most of this load from one's hands.     Hi, I'm trying to build a CCD document. My application has some raw data which has to be converted into a CCD document. And I've no idea where I should start from!! From this thread I learned that MDHT and Braid can be used to create a CCD document. But thats all I could grasp. I thought that I need a CCD XSD, a java library which will transform my raw data into a CCD document using this XSD ( or may be the library itself takes care of it ). But I'm stuck at both. I suppose the CCD XSD has to be purchased. If I get hold of the XSD, how should I proceed ahead? I got really confused reading the Braid and MDHT sites. Sorry, I'm a complete nOOb in this domain. Can anyone guide me?

  • Add columns to SqlWebEventProvider

    In an asp.net application, we'd like to use the SqlWebEventProvider to log any Event that occurs during the application lifetime. The problem is that we think that the table aspnet_WebEvent_Event doesn't provide enough columns and should log more information (we need to keep the Logged user). I'm aware that this information could be stored in the "Details" column but it wouldn't then be really simple to filter the results and build reports. So I'm searching for a simple solution to add a column. I wish I could derive SqlWebEventProvider but the methods used to build the stocked procedure parameters are private (PrepareParams() and FillParams()). Any simple solution that doesn't imply to rewrite the entire Provider class ?

    I started getting carpal tunnel symptoms about a year back and have tried different mice/keyboards and nothing seems to help. When my right wrist (i am right handed) started giving me pain, I switched from a regular optical mouse to this logitech mouse: It helped for a short while. I then started to learn using my left hand to operate the mouse. Now, my left wrist has started experiencing the symptoms. Which mouse do you recommend that has really helped you?

Literature says that healthmonitoring and custom events should work under Medium or higher trust (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb398933.aspx). Problem is it doesn't. In less than high trust I get a SecurityException saying The application attempted to perform an operation not allowed by the security policy It works in Full trust or when I remove the inheritance of System.Web.Management.WebErrorEvent. So, in the first few moments after I try a new technology and experience failure, I cannot tell if I am on the path to success and have just experienced a momentary failure or if I am going to fail.   • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

    I am designing a level-based game where the user completes the level 1, then 2, 3 and so on. There are 200 levels and each is rather short: 60-ish seconds. I am tracking Each played, completed (cleared for the first time), failed and cleared level Milestones: number of players to reach level 1, 5, 10, etc. Also for number of failed and played levels. Separate new players from returning ones. However, I still find it difficult to get a clear picture of what is going on from the stats. So what are the best practices for determining where I am losing players?
