• Best practices managing JavaScript on a single-page app

  With a single page app, where I change the hash and load and change only the content of the page, I'm trying to decide on how to manage the JavaScript that each "page" might need. I've already got a History module monitoring the location hash which could look like domain.com/#/company/about, and a Page class that will use XHR to get the content and insert it into the content area. function onHashChange(hash) { var skipCache = false; if(hash in noCacheList) { skipCache = true; } new Page(hash, skipCache).insert(); } // Page.js var _pageCache = {}; function Page(url, skipCache) { if(!skipCache && (url in _pageCache)) { return _pageCache[url]; } this.url = url; this.load(); } The cache should let pages that have already been loaded skip the XHR. I also am storing the content into a documentFragment, and then pulling the current content out of the document when I insert the new Page, so I the browser will only have to build the DOM for the fragment once. Skipping the cache could be desired if the page has time sensitive data. Here's what I need help deciding on: It's very likely that any of the pages that get loaded will have some of their own JavaScript to control the page. Like if the page will use Tabs, needs a slide show, has some sort of animation, has an ajax form, or what-have-you. What exactly is the best way to go around loading that JavaScript into the page? Include the script tags in the documentFragment I get back from the XHR? What if I need to skip the cache, and re-download the fragment. I feel the exact same JavaScript being called a second time might cause conflicts, like redeclaring the same variables. Would the better way be to attach the scripts to the head when grabbing the new Page? That would require the original page know all the assets that every other page might need. And besides knowing the best way to include everything, won't I need to worry about memory management, and possible leaks of loading so many different JavaScript bits into a single page instance?

  I am displaying some simple styled text as html in a UIWebView on iPhone. It is basically a series of paragraphs with the occasional strong or emphasized phrase. At runtime I need to apply styles to ranges of text. There are a few similar scenarios, one of which is highlighting search results. If the user has searched for "something" I would like to change the background color behind occurrences of the word, then later restore the original background. Is it possible to apply styles to ranges of text using javascript? A key part of this is also being able to unset the styles. There seem to be two likely paths to follow. One would be modifying some html in Objective-C and passing it through javascript as the new innerHTML of some container. The other would be to use javascript to directly manipulate DOM nodes. I could manipulate html, but that sounds tedious in Objective-C so I would rather manipulate the DOM if that is a reasonable approach. I am not that familiar with javascript and DOM so I do not know if it is a reasonable approach. I wrote some routines to translate between text ranges and node ranges with offsets. So if I start with text range 100-200 and that starts in one paragraph and ends in a third, I can get the text nodes and the offsets within the nodes that represent the given text range. I just need a way to split a text node at an offset in the text. Currently I just apply styles to the paragraphs containing the text range. A few notes: straight javascript please, no external frameworks like jquery. the changes never need to be written to disk. the changes should be undoable or at least removable. the styles to apply already exist in a css file. it needs to work in iPhone 3.0 and forward. all the source files are shipped with the app. please be verbose.   I have a simple array with x number of items. I am displaying them individually via a link click... I want to update a number that say 1 of 10. when the next one is displayed i want it to display 2 of 10 etc... I have looked all around and my brain is fried right now... • Utilizing back and forward browser buttons for web apps

  How do I use the back and forward browser buttons to navigate my javascript/jQuery web application? I know I can do window.location.href = 'this_url#placeholder' and then perform the appropriate action. But when I do that, the browser scrolls to the element with that placeholder id (or to the top if there wasn't one). How do I get the browser to not scroll anywhere? I've seen this on other sites like facebook, what's the appropriate mechanism for this?

• Javascript object dependencies

  In complex client side projects, the number of Javascript files can get very large. However, for performance reasons it's good to concatenate these files, and compress the resulting file for sending over the wire. I am having problems in concatenating these as the dependencies are included after they are needed in some cases. For instance, there are 2 files: /modules/Module.js <requires Core.js> /modules/core/Core.js The directories are recursively traversed, and Module.js gets included before Core.js, which causes errors. This is just a simple example where dependencies could span across directories, and there could be other complex cases. There are no circular dependencies though. The Javascript structure I follow is similar to Java packages, where each file defines a single Object (I'm using MooTools, but that's irrelevant). The structure of each javascript file and the dependencies is always consistent: Module.js var Module = new Class({ Implements: Core, ... }); Core.js var Core = new Class({ ... }); What practices do you usually follow to handle dependencies in projects where the number of Javascript files is huge, and there are inter-file dependencies?

• Iframe src set dynamically through JavaScript is being executed twice on Internet Explorer

  Hello Everyone, I am encountering a very annoying problem with IE. Basically I need to set the source of an IFrame using JavaScript, however the source document is being executed twice not once during each call. The simplified HTML code is pasted below (I simplified it so that readers can understand it quickly. The source is being set through JavaScript since it will contain dynamic content): <html> <head> <title>Iframe test</title> </head> <body> <iframe id="testIframe" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" src="" width="800" height="600"></iframe> <script language="JavaScript"> document.getElementById("testIframe").src = "http://localhost/test.php"; </script> </body> </html> In this example, test.php inserts a record inside a local database once called. Whenever the page above is called using IE, two rows are being inserted on most occasions (sometimes only 1 row is inserted but this is not the norm). I tested the same script on Chrome and Opera and it works correctly on them so this must be an IE issue. If is set the src directly inside the iframe tag IE starts behaving correctly, however I need to be able to build the URL using javascript. Has anyone encountered this issue? and does anyone know of a solution/workaround? Thanks and Regards Pierre

  hey guys, someone from doctype sent me here. long story short: var o="before"; x = function() //this needs to be an anonymous function { alert(o); //the variable "o" is from the parent scope }; o="after"; //this chages "o" in the anonymous function x(); //this results in in alert("after"); //which is not the way i want/need it in reality my code is somewhat more complex. my script iterates through many html objects and adds an event listener each element. i do this by declaring an anonymous function for each element and call another function with an ID as argument. that ID is represented by the "o"-variable in this example. after some thinking i understand why it is the way it is, but is there a way to get js to evaluate o as i declare the anonymous function without dealing with the id attribute and fetching my ID from there? my full source code is here: http://pastebin.com/GMieerdw the anonymous function is on line 303

• Best practice for defining CSS rules via JavaScript

  I'm loading a stylesheet that is only required when javascript is enabled. More to the point, it mustn't be present if JavaScript is disabled. I'm doing this as soon as possible (in the head) before any javascript libraries are loaded. (I'm loading all scripts as late as possible). The code for loading this stylesheet externally is simple, and looks like this: var el = document.createElement('link'); el.setAttribute('href','/css/noscript.css'); el.setAttribute('rel','stylesheet'); el.setAttribute('type','text/css'); document.documentElement.firstChild.appendChild(el); It's working fine, but all my CSS file contains at the moment is this: .noscript { display: none; } This doesn't really warrant loading a file, so I'm thinking of just defining the rule dynamically in JavaScript. What's best practice for this?. A quick scan of various techniques shows that it requires a fair bit of cross-browser hacking. P.S. pleeease don't post jQuery examples. This must be done with no libraries.

• Using Javascript to detect when a user has selected an item in an ASP.NET listbox

  Hello all, I am developing an ASP.NET web application that incorporates google maps. I have an ASP.NET listbox on my page which contains a list of items. When the user selects one of the items, I'd like to show this item on the map. The main complication lies in the fact that google maps uses javascript to control it and the listbox is a server control. I can think of two ways to do this. The first would involve the listbox calling a javascript function when the user selects a new item. I can then write this function to perform the necessary map operations. Unfortunately, the OnSelectedIndexChanged property of the listbox doesn't seem to support javascript functions. The second involves wrapping an UpdatePanel around the listbox and getting the listbox to perform a postback. In the SelectedIndexChanged event in VB/C#, I would the need to somehow make a call to a javascript function which would then update the map. Which solution can I use? Thanks --Amr

  Ok so perhaps someone can help me with a problem I'm trying to solve. Essentially I have a JSP page which gets a list of Country objects (from the method referenceData() from a Spring Portlet SimpleFormController, not entirely relevant but just mentioning in case it is). Each Country object has a Set of province objects and each province and country have a name field: public class Country { private String name; private Set<Province> provinces; //Getters and setters } public class Province { private String name; //Getters and setters } Now I have two drop down menus in my JSP for countries and provinces and I want to filter the provinces by country. I've been following this tutorial/guide to make a chain select in JavaScript. Now I need a dynamic way to create the JavaScript array from my content. And before anyone mentions AJAX this is out of the question since our project uses portlets and we'd like to stay away from using frameworks like DWR or creating a servlet. Here is the JavaScript/JSP I have so far but it is not populating the Array with anything: var countries = new Array(); <c:forEach items="${countryList}" var="country" varStatus="status"> countries[status.index] = new Array(); countries[status.index]['country'] = ${country.name}; countries[status.index]['provinces'] = [ <c:forEach items="${country.provinces}" var="province" varStatus="provinceStatus"> '${province.name}' <c:if test="${!provinceStatus.last}"> , </c:if> </c:forEach> ]; </c:forEach> Does anyone know how to create an JavaScript array in JSP in the case above or what the 'best-practice' would be considered in this case? • Using jQuery and AJAX works for all functions except one, really bizarre issue (from my perspective)

  I am working on a classic asp form that has a number of dropdowns. Three of these are cascading, i.e. they rely in the previous dropdown. For almost everything this code works fine, one of them however is not playing nice. To start off I have a script tag with the following in it: $(document).ready(function () { $("#AcademicLevel").change(getList); $("#CourseDeliveryTime").change(updateLocation); $("#ProgramType").change(updateEntryTerm); }); This works just fine for the first two elements of the form, AcademicLevel and CourseDeliveryTime, the third however does not take effect however. If I use Firebug's Console and run that same line of code, $("#ProgramType").change(updateEntryTerm);, it starts to work, sort of. What happens is what confuses me. If the function it is pointing to, updateEntryTerm, has an alert() call in it, it works. If the alert is commented out, it does not work. Second, why does the function itself, updateEntryTerm, not work unless the alert() call is present? Has anyone seem something like this before?
