  I have just bought one Raspberry pi RaspberryPi. I want to load linux kernel there. Actually my plan is to first load kernel ver sion 2.6.* after that one 3.10.* above that and in boot time I want to load 3.10.* (can choose). just after booting, I want to log in there through my windows machine using client like putty or telnet, on telnet I want see following prompt there: login as: root [email protected]'s password: ********** Last login: Thu Aug 21 22:41:07 2014 from 10.78.235.82 [root@debd ~]# [root@debd ~]#ls [root@debd ~]# Documents ... Can any one tell what kind of modification I needed to do for this? I am college student and have less knowledge managing hardware

• How to make Firefox windows style less space consuming?

  Firefox takes up so much space on small screens, so I'm searching for solutions that make firefox' interface less space consuming on ubuntu 12.04 with gnome3. Good examples are the chromium-style, but chromium is kind of slow in gnome3. Chromium does it, firefox on osx does it. Is this also possible on ubuntu via a custom modification or something? • Using source code with no license

  I've recently come across a publicly viewable project on Github that has no license associated with it. In this repo, there is a file with the logic and most of the code needed to work as a piece of a project I am working on. Not verbatim, but about 60% of it I'd like to use with various modifications. Once my code base is a little bit more stable, I plan to release what I've done under the WTFPL License. I've emailed the repo owner, and so far have not gotten a reply. I know I have the rights to fork the repo, but if I release a stripped down and modified version of the other project's file with mine, under the WTFPL, am I infringing on copyrights? Per Github's Terms of Service, by submitted a project on Github and making it viewable to the public, you are allowing other users to see and fork your project. Doesn't say anything about modifying, distributing, or using the fork. And at what point of modification to the original does it become owned by me?

  This question already has an answer here: How to diagnose a search engine ranking drop? 5 answers I modified a site recently : - I added many google analytics events, to better understand user behaviour. - I added also two buttons on almost all the pages of the site. Those buttons show modal-views (I am using bootstrap) with questions about user opinion. This modals views are on almost all pages of the site. After this modification the ranking of the site decreased on google search from the second place to the seconde page :( Is it the events-collected or the model-views added ? If the model-views are the reason, then how to better do similar surveys ? Did you have please similar experience, or explanation to this ? Perhaps it is the effect of panda4 update. In this cas, what can I look for to improve the site. How to debug the problem/reasons ?

• Is it possible to hide some topics in phpBB forum?

  I would like to be able to hide some of the topics in a phpBB-based forum temporarily from the users - perhaps with the exception of administrators and moderators. I am using the forum for my students and I have solutions of some problems from exams and tests there - posted either by me or by some of the students. I plan to use the same or very similar problems during the next academic year. So I don't want the students to see them, but I want to make the solutions visible again after the tests; so that I do not have to post solutions to same questions again. Is something like this possible? Is this a standard part of phpBB, or do I need to install some modification(s) for it?

• Setting up International Keyboard -layouts over X? Why do my kbd -layouts get reseted after reboot?

  I have asked a related question in different sites such as here in German and a related thread here, a different case in the latter though. I almost solved the question here, basically: "/etc/default/keyboard" -modification and one-line "$ setxkbmap -option grp:caps_toggle -variant dvorak-intl,nodeadkeys, us,de,no &" -- but the layout-settings get reseted after reboot. I use Debian but I believe the same settings apply to Ubuntu hence asking here. • Update live USB distro?

  I have Lubuntu 14.04 (and Ubuntu 14.04) on a pair of USB disks created by writing the img files to USB using dd on Mac OS X. Unfortunately these systems both have some known bugs (that have since been corrected) and lack certain important drivers for my system (which I have located online). How can I make the USB disks writable and how do I update the distribution upon them as one may do for a locally-installed system? And if I later proceed to install from these USB sticks onto a hard-drive, will they ‘carry’ the package and driver updates with them or will I have to start from scratch again? (I seem to remember from my ancient Windows XP days that such procedures were referred to as ’slipstreaming’ or somesuch on that side of the fence.) (No, I did not create a persistence partition when I created the sticks, because from Mac clearly that isn’t an option. And anyway, as I imperfectly understand it, the persistence partition is for user files and not for the modification of the system.)

• Steps to rebuild gspca_kinect driver module?

  I recently purchased a Kinect for Windows and quickly discovered that the camera drivers included in linux kernel 3.0+ aren't compatible with the Kinect for Windows hardware revision. After looking at the source code it seems like a tiny modification is all that is required for compatibility, so I've been trying to recompile the driver - to no avail. I've been referring to this article and this one as well, though they are a bit outdated. When I try to compile the module, I get an error because the header file "gspca.h" can't be found in the include path. I located the missing header in my filesystem, but the file itself is empty. I've also tried downloading the kernel source (3.2.0-24-generic), which allowed me to compile the module, but when I load the module I get an error. -1 Unknown symbol in module Is there a standard way to go about this without first building the kernel? Will building the kernel ensure that I can build the module? Thanks

  Most people have a single monitor for their computers, many have two, and some individuals enjoy “3 monitor plus” goodness. This week we would like to know how many monitors you use with your computer. Photo by DamnedNice. A good majority of people have a single monitor that they use with their computers and that single monitor serves their needs very well. It could be that these individuals do not engage in a heavy amount of work or play on their computers…they just need to do the basics like checking e-mail, using I.M., working with photos, etc. Another possibility is the use of virtual desktop software such as Dexpot, Yodm 3D, or Sysinternals Desktops on Windows systems. Linux systems such as Ubuntu already have that wonderful multi-desktop functionality built in. The wonderful part about virtual desktops is that a single monitor can feel equivalent to a small army of monitors. The ability to separate your open windows into “categories” and spread them out across multiple desktops is definitely nice. With each passing year dual monitor setups are becoming more common. Having twice the screen real-estate visible at the same time can be extremely convenient when you are multi-tasking. Perhaps you like to monitor your system’s stats and an e-mail account on the second monitor while working with software on the first. It certainly beats having windows popping up and down on your screen constantly while keeping on top of everything! Next we have the people who have three or more monitors in use with their computers. This may be a result of the type of work they do, an experiment to see if multiple monitors are right for them, or the cool, geeky factor that comes with having all those monitors. Needless to say these individuals can induce a good amount of envy and/or inspiration in the rest of us when we see their awesome setups. Are you perfectly content with a single monitor? Do you have two or more monitors that you use? If you have two or more monitors are they actually that useful to you? Perhaps you are getting ready even now to add additional monitors to your system. • Set modified date = created date or null on record creation?

  I've been following the convention of adding created and modified columns to most of my database tables. I also have been leaving the modified column as null on record creation and only setting a value on actual modification. The other alternative is to set the modified date to be equal to created date on record creation. I've been doing it the former way but I recent ran into one con which is seriously making me think of switching. I needed to set a database cache dependency to find out if any existing data has been changed or new data added. Instead of being able to do the following: SELECT MAX(modified) FROM customer I have to do this: SELECT GREATEST(MAX(created), MAX(modified)) FROM customer The negative being that it's a more complicated query and slower. Another thing is in file systems I believe they usually use the second convention of setting modified date = created date on creation. What are the pros and cons of the different methods? That is, what are the issues to consider?

  As I understand, the term "Backporting" is used to describe a fix which is applied in a future version which is also ported to a previous version. Wikipedia definition is as follows: Backporting is the action of taking a certain software modification (patch) and applying it to an older version of the software than it was initially created for. It forms part of the maintenance step in a software development process... For example: A problem is discovered and fixed in V2.0. The same fix is ported and applied to V1.5. What is the term when this is done in the opposite direction? The problem is discovered and fixed in V1.5. The same fix is ported and applied to V2.0. Would the term "Backporting" still apply? Or is there a term such as "Forwardporting" (which amusingly sounds a lot like "Port Forwarding")?

  Even with the new version of VMware Player 4.0.4 you are still required to patch their sources. So, same game as last month. Just changing the value of the required version in the kernel patch script of Stefano Angeleri (weltall) and you are done: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh Please change line 8 at the top of the script like so: plreqver=4.0.4 Save your modification and then run the following commands: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.shsudo service vmware restart And again, on first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Interestingly, one day ago the Ubuntu repositories provided a newer kernel version 3.2.0-25, so everything is running fine for now.

• Compaq Presario R3000 randomly fails to boot on 11.10, 12.04, 12.10

  I’m trying to figure what to do with random failures to boot. My old HP Presario R3000 with AMD Athlon XP-M sometimes boots, sometimes hangs with a blank screen during boot, and sometimes hangs on shutdown. After a few boot attempts it will finally boot to the GNU GRUB screen where I usually can select Recovery Mode, then select return to a normal boot, and the thing will startup and function normally. The pattern is not repeatable and seemed to start after upgrading from 11.04. Clean installs of 12.04 and 12.10 on newly-formatted hard drives make no difference. If this might be a clue, hangs on shutdown often stop at a line with: “pcmcia_socket pcmcia_socket0: cs: IO port probe 0x3000-0x7fff: excluding 0x3000-0x30ff 0x3400-0x34ff 0x3800-0x38ff 0x3c00-0x3cff”. I did try the “acpi=off” modification from 11.10 randomly fails to boot on Compaq Presario R3000 with no change in these random boot failures. Any suggestions sure appreciated.

  Lets say I have library "A2" as a dependency in a project. Library "A2" is derived from library "A1" where someone has done few changes to the library "A1" 's source code. Lets say there is a new version of "A1" I want to use the new version but no modification to its sourcecode at all. I am planning to identify what are the changes done to the original library when deriving library "A2" out of it and decorate the latest version of the library with those changes. Is it a good approach to solve this? if not can someone suggest the best approach to solve this kind of problems?
