• Setting up Ubuntu on my mother's computer

  Intended use My mother had an old Compaq desktop computer running Windows 98, which she used for occasional Web browsing and playing cards. The name of her card game is Hoyle Card Games 3. Although I had to repair it several times over the last 10 years, it worked fine until it finally died at the end of last year. Hardware specifications A relative brought up a newer computer soon afterward: Operating system: Windows XP Asus K8N motherboard (with broken on-board sound; getting a sound card) Athlon 64? processor (don't remember the clock speed) 512 MB RAM Hope the graphics card works... Replacement sound card will be one of: Ensoniq ES1370 AudioPCI Diamond Monster Sound MX300 (Aureal chipset) Sound Blaster Audigy 2 SE Peripherals HP Scanjet 3400c scanner (USB connected) HP LaserJet multi-function printer (parallel port connected, and printing works with a PCL driver) Same serial mouse as old computer Question I had set up an SSH/VNC connection to allow for remotely working out problems. Or so I thought. A month later, the computer would not boot, rendering the SSH connection useless and an OS reinstall necessary. Unfortunately, I have neither the original Windows disc nor the product key. Unless I were to pay $200 for a full Windows 7 Home Premium license for my computer, I would not be able to re-install Windows XP on hers. I consider myself an advanced Linux user, having used Debian for years. So here are my questions. I have only one day to decide whether to use Ubuntu or buy Windows: A quick search leads me to believe all the hardware listed above is supposed to work with Linux, but am I mistaken? Would Ubuntu/Xubuntu suffice (specify which one if it matters), or would I be better off paying the $200 necessary for Windows XP? Is the card game likely to run on Wine? I believe the minimum system requirement is Windows 95. Failing Wine compatibility, will VirtualBox run fast enough on such a computer (Windows 98 as the guest OS)? Are there any free card games just as good? She plays mainly Bridge, Poker, and Solitaire. Is there any "Large Fonts" option for those with poor vision? The lack of it would be a big disadvantage. BONUS: Although I would probably replace the old mouse upon a move to Ubuntu, is it even possible to get a serial mouse working?

I was wondering if it is also possible to make them clients of the sound server computer, so that they will send their sound output over the network to be played by the Ubuntu computer running the Pulse audio sound server. And if so, how?

  I am looking for papers/algorithms for merging projected textures onto geometry. To be more specific, given a set of fully calibrated cameras/photographs and geometry, how can we define a metric for choosing which photograph should be used to texture a given patch of the geometry. I can think of a few attributes one may seek minimize including the angle between the surface normal and the camera, the distance of the camera from the surface, as well as minimizing some parameterization of sharpness. The question is how do these things get combined and are there well established existing solutions?

  I turn on Bluetooth on both my devices and open up Music on my Android. I select a song to play, press the menu button, and tap "Via Bluetooth": I tap on my computer in the "Bluetooth Device Picker": Then it says, under the name of my computer: Connected to media audio Now I should technically be able to play music through my computer, since it "Just Worked" in Kubuntu with Blueman. But nope, something must be up with PulseAudio, because I hear no sound from my computer (I'm running Xubuntu 12.04). The reason I say this is that the devices list in Blueman shows indication of data transfer and it says it's connected, but in the PulseAudio Volume Control has no indication of my Bluetooth device (or Blueman) playing audio.

  I was wondering if Ubuntu has an equivalent to the Windows feature "My Computer", which lists all available drives/storage devices. Typically, My Computer shows C:, which can be opened to view all of your directories and files. At this point, it is very similar to Ubuntu's Home Folder, but I am looking for something that allows me to view/select all available HDD's/Partitions. Here's my reason: I found a 6gb IDE HDD in my basement, and got an IDE cable for it. My desktop computer has a SATA drive in it, but has an IDE slot, so I wanted to plug it in and see what might be on it. The drive seems to be recognized in BIOS, but I can't find it in Ubuntu to view files, and Ubuntu is the only OS on that particular computer. If anyone has any ideas as to how to view the contents of that drive WITHOUT formatting it or tampering with the contents in any way, I would greatly appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

• How to troubleshoot a remote wmi query/access failure?

  Hi I'm using Powershell to query a remote computer in a domain for a wmi object, eg: "gwmi -computer test -class win32_bios". I get this error message: Value does not fall within the expected range Executing the query local under the same user works fine. It seems to happen on both windows 2003 and also 2008 systems. The user that runs the shell has admin rights on the local and remote server. I checked wmi and dcom permissions as far as I know how to do this, they seem to be the same on a server where it works, and another where it does not. I think it is not a network issue, all ports are open that are needed, and it also happens within the same subnet. When sniffing the traffic we see the following errors: RPC: c/o Alter Cont Resp: Call=0x2 Assoc Grp=0x4E4E Xmit=0x16D0 Recv=0x16D0 Warning: GssAPIMechanism is not found, either caused by not reassembled, conversation off or filtering. And an errormessage from Kerberos: Kerberos: KRB_ERROR - KDC_ERR_BADOPTION (13) The option code in the packet is 0x40830000 Any idea what I should look into?

Please enter new credentials A quick google search leads to some posts they all suggest I edit group policy, etc. I'm under the impression, that the common fix for this, is to follow those instructions -per Windows7 machine-.   Here’s what I dream of: I install Windows 7 Home on my parents’ PC. They have a regular user account that they use, meaning they can’t install anything. I have an administrator account, meaning I can install things for them. I install some sort of VNC software on their machine that lets me access their computer remotely under the administrator account, so that I can install software for them (or do other administrator tasks, e.g. updates) without actually going to their house. Is there any VNC or VNC-like software that supports the above? (I guess I might be better off buying them Windows 7 Professional, and using Remote Desktop. At some point I’ll give up and get them an iPad, but for now, remote Windows admin is the dream.)

CPU RAM Graphics Card L1 CACHE L2 CACHE L3 CACHE FSB ... And all other things. Which is the biggest bottle neck? Why would a person not want/need a big value in one of those categories in certain situations? P.S.: when reading the specs of the i5 750 processor, I came across this description: In place of the FSB, one or more high speed, point-to-point buses called Quick Path Interconnect (QPI) are used, formerly known as Common Serial Interconnect Bus or CSI. QPI features higher bandwidth than the traditional FSB and is better suited to system scaling. What is this, and how does it compare to FSB? EDIT: I am not planning to buy a computer at all. The goal of this question is to understand the internal relation of various hardware pieces, their specific functions and how they work together. For instance, I have heard to a somewhat higher-than-usual amount of L2/L3 Cache can help speed up your computer. What's up with saying that? Also I forgot to mention Hard-disk RPM.

  We have a small server farm (11 now, may add more in the future) of HP Proliant DL160 G6s. They all run either Linux (server only, no X11) or VMware ESX. We had intended to get models with iLO, in case BIOS-level remote admin became an issue, but that didn't happen. I had an IP KVM switch recommended to me (along with some sort of Remote Reboot hardware.) I've since realized that none of our machines need GUI administration, so perhaps a serial console switch would be a cheaper and more appropriate option. Something like this: http://www.kvm-switches-online.com/serimux-cs-32.html Do you folks have an opinions on which way is a better choice? Should we go for the ease of setup (plug and go, instead of turning on the feature in the BIOS and making sure the serial settings are correct) and the flexibility of an IP KVM switch even with the extra cost?   How can I determine who is logged on to a remote Windows XP computer from Linux? I do not have administrator access on the domain or on the remote computer. I can do it from a separate Windows computer using PsLoggedOn -L \\computer from PsTools I've tried using nmblookup -A remotecomputer, but I only see entries for the computer and the domain, not a <03> entry for the user. I've also tried running PsLoggedOn under wine; I get an error: Connecting to Registry of \\computer.company.com... fixme:reg:RegConnectRegistryW Connect to L"computer.company.com" is not supported. I started looking into winexe, but it looks like I would need administrative rights on the remote computer to get it working.

• HTC Android Fails to mount- Mount from computer?

  I Have an HTC Incredible S (S-Off, Rooted, ViperVIVO 1.3.0 ICS) that has seemingly ceased to posses the ability to mount its SD Storage to my computer. For whatever reason, whenever I plug in my device to transfer files from computer to phone and vice versa, the computer, for some reason, cannot actually aces the phone. I get prompted with a window on my phone when I first plug it in, asking me which mode I want to put the device into (Charge mode, tether mode, etc.), and even if I select the "Disk Drive" function, the phone still cannot successfully mount to my computer. The phone itself unmounts itself from the SD and says that the computer is connected, but again, it doesn't work. Is there any way to force mount the device from my computer- either via command or otherwise? This should help in that if I unmount the SD from the phone I should be able to mount it to my computer, from my computer, Correct?

  I try to get the Windows 7 (or Vista) remote assistance feature to work, without using UPnP on the novices computer. After enabling Teredo on the expert's computer (that is in a corporate network, and therefore has teredo disabled by default), I tried to connect to the novice both using Easy Connect and the invitation file with no success. My triubleshooting included the following (so far). A connection to the novice from my home pc was successful, hinting at a misconfiguration on the experts side. Both computers have a "qualified" connection to the Teredo Server. Both computers have a valid Teredo IP, access to the Global_ PNRP cloud and can resolve names registered with PNRP on the other computer. The expert can resolve the PNRP Id automatically generated with an Easy Connect help request Both computers can ping the other's PNRP name. Both computers can ping the other's Teredo IP Address using ping -6 Now, I am a little stumped. I expected Remote Assistance to work at this point, since my corporate firewall has no Teredo filtering. What could RA cause not to work in this setting? Thanks in advance!

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

  I've run into a weird, persistent issue regarding a remote desktop connection. Every time I successfully log into a server running Windows Server 2003 SBS, without taking any further action, after a few seconds a print job spontaneously appears on my machine, titled "Remote Desktop Redirected Printer Doc". The document is 4K, datatype RAW, processor "WinPrint". I've heard of people running into this issue before, but can't seem to hunt down a coherent solution. It's a minor annoyance, but I get annoyed when Windows complains about a print job that, as far as I know, came from nowhere. Any thoughts on why this would occur and how I could prevent it from happening?

• Computer won't start up. Stuck on Lenovo splash screen. Help Diagnose

  I have some (I'm not sure exactly what model) Lenovo 21" IdeaCentre. Honestly, the computer works off and on. I have had problems with it not being able to shutdown, which I fixed. The fan seems to be constantly running, a few other problems as well. Anyway, nobody was using it when all of a sudden it switched to a blue screen. I was in the kitchen, but when I got over to the computer I read the message. It said something about bad drivers, but that is all I saw and then it restarted. However, when it got to the Lenovo Splash screen, nothing happened. I waited there for over 10 minutes, but still nothing. I tried to turn of the computer, but the only way to do it was to pull out the power cable. I then removed all USB devices and tried again. Still nothing. It also won't respond to keyboard input when I try to use enter to interrupt normal startup. My guess is some piece of hardware is damaged inside the machine. However, I have no idea what piece it is. Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong with it? Thanks.

• Windows 7 Remote Desktop with dual monitors wont wake up.

  I run Windows 7 64bit with dual monitors at work. If i connect from home using remote desktop, the next morning i cannot wake up the monitors. The computer seems to be fine (i can connect again from another pc using remote desktop) but monitor will stay blank. I've tried unplugging the monitors and reconnecting them but still frustrating. The only solution is to restart the machine. Some specs if it helps. HP 3000 Pro Windows 7 Pro 64 bit ATI Radeon HD 4550 Samsung SyncMaster 2243 x2
