  • What is the max connections via remote desktop for a small server?

    - by Jay Wen
I have a small server running MS Server 2012. The CPU is a Xeon E3-1230 V2 @ 3.30GHz, 4 Cores, 8 Logical Processors, 8 GB RAM. Main HD is a Samsung 840, and the big storage is a 4 disk WD Black Raid 10 Array in a Synology NAS enclusure. My question is: given this hardware, approximately how many users can the system support via "Remote Desktop Connection"? Assume there are no licensing limits. These are not admin users. I know there is a two admin limit. This boils down to: What resources does one remote connection require? RAM? % of the CPU? Networking bandwidth? I guess the base case would be for a conection where the user is inactive or simply browsing cnn. Once you know this, you know how many you could fit on the machine before something is maxed-out. In reality, users would be mostly on Excel (multi-MB spreadsheets). I know the approx. resources currently required by each copy of Excel.

  • What is the best solution for remote desktop / visual support?

    - by SchizoDuckie
We are currently investigating different remote-desktop support solutions to help our clients if they have any problems with our software and I would like some input on the best solutions out there. We have the following needs / wishes: Cross platform Preferrably no installation on the user-end Should penetrate firewalls and not be bothered by antivirus stuff. Should leave no residu behind after support. I know of VNC, logmeinrescue.com, dameware remote control, msn remote desktop and many others, but which one is the best?

  • How Can I Test My Computer’s Power Supply?

    - by Jason Fitzpatrick
You’re concerned your computer troubles stem from a failing (or outright fried) power supply unit. How can you test the unit to be sure that it’s the source of your hardware headaches? Today’s Question & Answer session comes to us courtesy of SuperUser—a subdivision of Stack Exchange, a community-driven grouping of Q&A web sites. The Question SuperUser reader Sam Hoice has some PSU concerns: My computer powered off the other day on its own, and now when I push the power button, nothing happens. My assumption would naturally be that the power supply is done (possibly well done) but is there any good way to test this before I buy a new one? How can Sam test things without damaging his current computer or other hardware?   The Answer SuperUser contributor Grant writes: Unplug the power supply from any of the components inside the computer (or just remove it from the computer completely). USE CAUTION HERE (Though you’d only be shocked with a max of 24 volts) Plug the power supply into the wall. Find the big 24-ish pin connector that connects to the motherboard. Connect the GREEN wire with the adjacent BLACK wire. The power supply’s fan should start up. If it doesn’t then it’s dead. If the fan starts up, then it could be the motherboard that’s dead. You can use a multimeter to check if there is power output from the power supply. Adrien offers a solution for readers who may not be comfortable jamming wires into their power supply unit’s MOBO connector: Most well-stocked geek-stores sell a “power-supply tester” that has all the appropriate connectors to plug each part of your PSU into, with spiffy LEDs indicating status of the various rails, connectors for IDE/SATA/floppy power cables, etc. They run ~$20 US. With a little careful shopping you can even find a highly-rated PSU tester for a measly $6. Have something to add to the explanation? Sound off in the the comments. • How do I remove the on screen keyboard from the logon screen in Windows Remote Desktop Server 2008 R

    - by Gomibushi
The on screen keyboard (OSK) from the "ease of access" tools pops up on EVERY connect to the server, even if you have not activated it. I can't seem to find a control panel or reg setting to switch it off. It is VERY "in your face" for linux users who connect at lower resolutions and do not provide all credentials, but have to type username and password. I'm running a 2008 R2 Terminal Server/Remote Desktop Server.

  • Stop Your Mouse from Waking Up Your Windows 7 Computer

    - by The Geek
If you use Sleep Mode on your PC, have you ever noticed that moving your mouse will wake the computer from sleep mode? If you would prefer to only have the PC wake up when you hit a key instead, there’s a simple tweak. Just type Mouse into the start menu search box, or the Control Panel search box, and then open up the Mouse Properties panel. Find the Hardware tab, select your mouse in the list, and then click the Properties button. You’ll have to click the “Change settings” button before you can see the Power Management tab… And now, you can uncheck the box from “Allow this device to wake the computer”. That’s all there is to it. • How to force a login for an administrator when using Remote Desktop Connection and fast user switching enabled?

    - by brett rogers
Scenario: I am at work. I want to remote desktop into my machine at home. Problem is, my 5-year-old daughter is playing games on Starfall.com (or something similar) on her (non-admin) account. When I attempt to connect I see this message: Another user is currently logged on to this computer. If you continue, this user has to disconnect from this computer. Do you want to continue? I click Yes and then see Please wait for 'UserName' to respond This presents my daughter with an Allow/Disallow dialog on whether to let me connect. She clicks Disallow (or No or whatever it says) and then I see 'UserName' has denied your request Question: How can I force my account to log in and disconnect her session? Additional Info: My account is an administrator account. My daughter's account is a non-administrator account. Home machine is Windows 7 Pro with fast user switching enabled. Turning off fast user switching is not an option (Kyle pointed out in his answer that turning it off would allow the admin to force another user off). I would keep fast user switching's ability to change accounts without closing the previous account's session over being able to force myself to connect.

  • Is there a remote desktop management tool that I can email to people?

    - by Matt 'Trouble' Esse
I often need to remotely manage PC and Macs for desktop support. I'm after a remote desktop management support tool that I could email (or send a url) that the customer could click on (or run) and I could then remotely manage their PC/Mac A tool that could work on both operating systems would be great but not mandatory (a separate tool for both/either will suffice) A tool that has an iPhone App would be fantastic too but this would just be very much a 'wish list' Looking forward to your suggestion!

  • Building a computer for the first time from scratch - will this really work?

    - by Nike
Hey there. I'm building my own computer, and i just finished picking out all of my parts. Now i just want to be sure it'll all work before i order it. I'm mean specifically if the RAM & Graphic card will fit on the motherboard i chose. Below is a list of all parts. I'm sorry, i selected the parts from a Swedish website so it might be hard to understand some parts. Google Translate will help ;) I really appreciate any help/suggestions. Thanks in advance! :) Oh, and here's the parts i mentioned: EDIT: As i'm not allowed to post more than one link here, i'll just link to my homepage: http://nike1.se/c/ I know i didn't choose the most expensive parts, but this won't be my primary computer. I'm only going to use this one for testing purpose, if that makes any sense. I'm sorry for my english, i'm just so tired now. Haha! Once again, thanks in advance! :)

  • SSH Proxy (SOCKS) through remote computer - TCP & DNS

    - by Moz Morris
My problem: Need DNS to be resolved through my remote machine. So I have a REMOTE that I can access from LOCAL via SERVER. This REMOTE can access a host TARGET_HOST. TARGET_HOST is setup in REMOTE's host file like so: 123.123.123.123 TARGET_HOST I want to be able to access (in the browser & my application) TARGET_HOST from LOCAL. I have setup a 'proxy' like so: LOCAL to SERVER: ssh -L 4567:LOCAL:4568 user@SERVER SERVER to REMOTE: ssh -D 4568 user@REMOTE LOCAL's network config is setup to use a proxy on localhost through port 4567. So, everything is great and I can see TARGET_HOST in my browser. The problem I have is that the DNS doesn't resolve from LOCAL and therefore some code I have going on in my application, fails. Can anyone help me? Can anyone suggest a better method?

  • Remote Desktop triggers a loud Beep on local machine - how to shut it up?

    - by codeulike
When I remote desktop into a server, I get a loud beep coming out of my local machine whenever certain messageboxes pop up. (An example is to search for something in the Event Log - when the search finds no results, I get a message box accompanied by a loud beep) Annoyingly, the beep still happens even if I have sound turned off locally or the volume right down - it seems to be hooking in to some low level OS-beep mechanism. Any way to turn it off?

  • Is it possible to use some form of code for example in PUTTY to execute a task which is done Remote

    - by xnxmx
Basically, Every morning at 6:00AM I have to do login to remote desktop, open a program, and click on a few things to make reservations before anyone else does. I want to know if there is any other way that this can be done by simply turning it into some form of a code and executing it instead of manually doing it. Of course, time is precious here and the task needs to be done at the same pace if not faster. Thanks!!!

  • Routing and Remote Access Port Mapping not applied to localhost

    - by Computer Guru
Hi, I've set up Routing and Remote Access (Windows Server 2003) to forward publicip:80 to a server on the private internal network, and that's working great. Incoming requests from the internet to port 80 are correctly forwarded to our internal web server and everything is fine. However, requests on the server itself are not being forwarded. That is, if I open a console window and type "telnet publicip 80" from the server on publicip, the request is not forwarded to the private server. I understand that in RRAS I've mapped port 80 on the public interface to the private server and that's why it's not working; but I don't know how to configure it so that requests from the local PC are also forwarded to the private server. I'd appreciate any help or feedback on the matter. Thanks!

  • What happens when the server that the Remote Desktop Connection Broker goes down?

    - by Frank Owen
I would like to setup the Remote Desktop Connection Broker to allow better load balancing of the two terminal servers we have as well as allowing the user to re-establish to the correct server if they get disconnected. My worry is, if I set this up and the server this service is running goes down, does the terminal server stop accepting connections or will they just lose the benefit of having RDCB turned on? I don't want to add another point of failure in this equation unless I have to.

  • How to connect to database on remote server

    - by user137263
Where there is VPN to remote server and then access to the database via local network interface, how can one establish a remote link between one's computer (with a programme such as Visual Studio 2010) and SQL Server (e.g. 2008 R2) ? Any attempts to create a direct link to the SQL Server are blocked. Whilst the SQL Server can be configured to allow external access, this provides its own host of problems. Any help would be much appreciated.
