  • What is the fastest way to filter a list of strings when making an Intellisense/Autocomplete list?

    Hello everyone, I'm writing an Intellisense/Autocomplete like the one you find in Visual Studio. It's all fine up until when the list contains probably 2000+ items. I'm using a simple LINQ statement for doing the filtering: var filterCollection = from s in listCollection where s.FilterValue.IndexOf(currentWord, StringComparison.OrdinalIgnoreCase) >= 0 orderby s.FilterValue select s; I then assign this collection to a WPF Listbox's ItemSource, and that's the end of it, works fine. Noting that, the Listbox is also virtualised as well, so there will only be at most 7-8 visual elements in memory and in the visual tree. However the caveat right now is that, when the user types extremely fast in the richtextbox, and on every key up I execute the filtering + binding, there's this semi-race condition, or out of sync filtering, like the first key stroke's filtering could still be doing it's filtering or binding work, while the fourth key stroke is also doing the same. I know I could put in a delay before applying the filter, but I'm trying to achieve a seamless filtering much like the one in Visual Studio. I'm not sure where my problem exactly lies, so I'm also attributing it to IndexOf's string operation, or perhaps my list of string's could be optimised in some kind of index, that could speed up searching. Any suggestions of code samples are much welcomed. Thanks.

  • Problem with type coercion and string concatenation in JavaScript in Greasemonkey script on Firefox

    I'm creating a GreaseMonkey script to improve the user interface of the 10k tools Stack Overflow uses. I have encountered an unreproducible and frankly bizarre problem that has confounded me and the others in the JavaScript room on SO Chat. We have yet to find the cause after several lengthy debugging sessions. The problematic script can be found here. Source - Install The problem occurs at line 85, the line after the 'vodoo' comment: return (t + ' (' + +(+f.offensive + +f.spam) + ')'); It might look a little weird, but the + in front of the two variables and the inner bracket is for type coercion, the inner middle + is for addition, and the other ones are for concatenation. Nothing special, but observant reader might note that type coercion on the inner bracket is unnecessary, since both are already type coerced to numbers, and type coercing result is useless when they get concatenated into a string anyway. Not so! Removing the + breaks the script, causing f.offensive and f.spam to be concatenated instead of added together. Adding further console.log only makes things more confusing: console.log(f.offensive + f.spam); // 50 console.log('' + (+f.offensive + +f.spam)); // 5, but returning this yields 50 somehow console.log('' + (+f.offensive + +f.spam) + ''); // 50 Source: http://chat.stackoverflow.com/transcript/message/203261#203261 The problem is that this is unreproducible - running scripts like console.log('a' + (+'3' + +'1') + 'b'); in the Firebug console yields the correct result, as does (function(){ return 'a' + (+'3' + +'1') + 'b'; })(); Even pulling out large chunks of the code and running them in the console does not reproduce this bug: $('.post-menu a[id^=flag-post-]').each(function(){ var f = {offensive: '4', spam: '1'}; if(f){ $(this).text(function(i, t){ // Vodoo - please do not remove the '+' in front of the inner bracket return (t + ' (' + +(+f.offensive + +f.spam) + ')'); }); } }); Tim Stone in the chatroom has reproduction instruction for those who are below 10k.   • Handling Junk Email with Apple Mail.app and Gmail

    I've just setup my Apple Mail client to work with Google Apps through IMAP. One lingering question is how to best handle SPAM (Junk Mail), however. In their Help section, Google recommends that we disable junk filtering on the client. http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=78892 This leads me to wonder what we should do when a junk message makes it past Google's filter? Do I just delete the message? If I do, the Google spam filter will never improve and "learn" that the message was junk. Do I have to log in to the web interface at Google to mark the message as spam? That seems a bit arduous for every spam email I get. What's the best way to handle this? Thanks!

    This makes my brain hurt. For some reason, SpamAssassin is giving high scores to certain emails, but when I test them on the command line, they get a low score. Is there some other way I should be testing emails? Also, my users have the ability to drag false positives into a folder called "False Positives," and every day a cron job fires off that runs this on every message in every user's folder: sa-learn --dbpath=/var/lib/amavis/.spamassassin --ham /tmp/*-*.eml >/dev/null I ran sudo locate bayes_toks and there's definitely only one bayes DB on the system, in /var/lib/amavis/.spamassassin. I'm clueless, any help would be great and may help restore my sanity!

    I have problem with spam and postfix + postgray. It generally good works but I have false-positive still and reject good email. And now I have problems. Can I configure postfix (and postgray) that: if_reject than redirect to [email protected] (change recipients). Or I don't know maybe: Each email have to copy and send to [email protected] Then filtering? If hit restriction than just reject (another copy is in [email protected]) How to do it? Sorry for my english. Can you help me? Thank you

    In Webmaster Tools, under the inbound links section, do ads get counted as inbound links? I am doing a review of inbound links on a website and found that most of them are sourced from meaningless blogs and spam websites. Before I accuse anyone of not doing their job properly, I would like to know something: Is it possible that those inbound links were generated when an ad for the website appeared on the spam website? An SEO firm was paid handsomly to generate inbound links and I am afraid all they did was submit material to spam blogs and websites.

  • Blog not even ranking for exact title match, after domain has been dropped twice [on hold]

    Consider a blog, related to blogging and SEO. The domain has been dropped (expired) 2 times before acquisition. The current owner is the 3rd owner of the domain since 5 months. Blog posts are not ranking, even for exact titles. Google+ or other shares will show up instead of the content. Some blog posts are not even indexed. Let us TAKE that it gets around 7 organic visits / day. Dropped domain, less likely used for spam (WayBack machine (2 Reframed drops) 3 captures since 2004, Don't know whether there was Email spam) (But no manual actions in WMT, so no reconsideration request). What could be the reason for this? How can Google be told that ownership is changed and the domain is now spam-free? Would this domain be salvageble, or does this only change after relocating to another domain?

  • SEO: Is promoting your backlinks a good strategy for improving search results for my site's name?

    I run a website that's been around for about three years in the sports space. I am successfully ranking well for targeted keywords, but searching for the name of my site itself returns very poor results - it shows my site, its FB/Twitter, and then 15 pages of unrelated spam that happen to contain two words that, when combined, form my website's name. After that, my backlinks begin to show up spordically. As far as I can tell, I simply don't have enough backlinks and the backlinks I do have are ranked worse than the spam. (Site Explorer lists 200 external links to any page on our domain and 20 external links directly to the front page). To counter this, my strategy is to promote my backlinks so they get a better page rank than the spam. Does that make sense? Am I going in the right direction or should I just focus on getting more backlinks pointing directly to my site? Thanks in advance and I'd be happy to answer any questions I can (without giving away my site of course).

Wp-comment-notifier is a small free app for Windows that lets you easily view, approve, reply to, and delete comments from your WordPress blog.  Whether you have a free WordPress.com blog or are running WordPress on your own server, this tool can keep you connected to your comments.  Unfortunately it only lets you manage comments at one blog, so if manage multiple WordPress-powered sites you may find this a downside.  Otherwise, it works great and helps you stay on top of the conversation at your blog. Get notified with wp-comment-notifier Download the wp-comment-notifier (link below) and install as usual. Run it once it’s installed.  Enter your blog address, username, and password when prompted. Wp-comment-notifier will automatically setup your account and download recent comments. Finally, enter your blog’s name, and click Finish. Review Comments with wp-comment-notifier You can now review your comments directly by double-clicking the new WordPress icon in your system tray.  The window has 3 tabs…comments, pending, and spam.  Select a comment to reply, edit, spam, or delete it directly from your desktop. I used the Arrays.asList() but the behavior (and signature) somehow changed from 1.4.2 to 1.5.0 and most snippets I found on the web use the 1.4.2 behaviour. I understand that I could put this into a view with a request transaction around it, but I want this to work in the Admin, and via an API, etc. Not just with forms, or views. How is it possible?

  • How to force adodb php library to use lowercase field names

    I'm trying to use adodb for db access in my webapp. However my hosting provider has mysql case sensitive, and I have all my fields in lowercase. But when I call getInsertSQL function, I got them in uppercase. Is there a way to force adodb to use lowercase? I tried with define('ADODB_ASSOC_CASE', 0); $ADODB_ASSOC_CASE = 0; But it seems to be ignored as the constant is suppose to be used only with oracle, MSSQL and other DBMS $conn = &ADONewConnection($this->DbType); $conn = PConnect($dbServer,$dbUser, $dbPassword,$database); $tableName = "sample"; $insertSQL = $conn->GetInsertSQL($tableName,$objDB); And I got the SQL statement with the column names in uppercase.

  • Odd Profiler Results with EF4

    I have been doing some testing of using the Microsoft Entity Framework 4 with stored procedures and ran across some really odd results in SQL Server Profiler. The application that is running which uses Entity Framework 4 is a simple Web Application written in C#, and the Entity Data Model is actually contained in a referenced class library of its own.  I’ll write more about my experiences with this later.  For now the question is, why does SQL Profiler think that the stored procedure is running in Master, and not in my application database? While analyzing the effects of using custom helper methods on my EDM classes to call the stored procedure, I decided to run Profiler while I stepped through the code so that I had a clear understanding of exactly when and what calls were made to the SQL Server.  I ran Profiler switching back and forth between the TSQL and TSQL_SP templates.  However, to reduce the amount of results rows I needed to wade through, I set a filter on DatabaseID to be equal to my application’s database.  Each time I ran this, the only thing that I saw was an Audit:Login to the database, but no procedure or T-SQL statements executed, yet I was definitely getting results back to my web page.  I tried other Profiler templates, still filtering on DatabaseID (tangent: I found, at least back in SQL 2000 Profiler, that filtering on DatabaseID was more reliable than filtering on DatabaseName.  Even though I’m now running SQL 2008, that habit sticks with me).  Still no results other than the Login.  Very weird! Finally, I decided to run Profiler with no filtering and discovered that that lines which represent my stored procedure and its T-SQL commands are all marked with DatabaseID = 1, which is Master.  Why in the world would that be?  My procedure is definitely in the application database, and not in Master, and there is nothing funny about the call to the procedure evident in Profiler (i.e. it is not called as MyAppDB.dbo.MyProcName, but rather just dbo.MyProcName).  There must be something funny with the way the Entity Framework is wrapping this call, and I don’t like it…I don’t like it one bit.  My primary PROD server contains 40+ databases on it, and when I need to profile something, I expect to be able to filter based on DatabaseID (for the record, I displayed DatabaseName in my results, too, and it also shows Master). I find the same pattern of everything except the Login showing up as being in Master when I run my version that uses standard LINQ to Entities instead of stored procedures, so that suggests it is not my code, but rather something funny with SQL Server 2008 Profiler or the Entity Framework.     We do a lot of mass emailing of our contacts to promote events, send out newsletters, etc. Some people read and react, some people unsubscribe, but I fear that some might actually mark the email as spam. Is there any way to figure out whether my domain has been added to email blacklists or spam registries? Also, if I use a service like MailChimp to send the emails, how would this work? If one unscrupulous customer was using MailChimp for evil, wouldn't it affect all of their customers?
