  • Signal amplitude against time in Java

    - by wsr74ws84
I'm racking my brain in order to solve a knotty problem (at least for me). While playing an audio file (using Java) I want the signal amplitude to be displayed against time. I mean I'd like to implement a small panel showing a sort of oscilloscope (spectrum analyzer). The audio signal should be viewed in the time domain (vertical axis is amplitude and the horizontal axis is time). Does anyone know how to do it? Is there a good tutorial I can rely on? Since I know very little about Java, I hope someone can help me.

  • How do you assign a variable with the result of a if..else block?

    - by Pierre Olivier Martel
I had an argument with a colleague about the best way to assign a variable in an if..else block. His orignal code was : @products = if params[:category] Category.find(params[:category]).products else Product.all end I rewrote it this way : if params[:category] @products = Category.find(params[:category]).products else @products = Product.all end This could also be rewritten with a one-liner using a ternery operator (? :) but let's pretend that product assignment was longer than a 100 character and couldn't fit in one line. Which of the two is clearer to you? The first solution takes a little less space but I thought that declaring a variable and assigning it three lines after can be more error prone. I also like to see my if and else aligned, makes it easier for my brain to parse it!

  • The Definition of Regular Languages

    - by AraK
Good Day, I have tried, and burned my brain to understand the definition of Regular Languages in Discrete Mathematics and its Applications(Rosen) without reaching the goal of understanding why the definition is like that in this book. On page(789), I am rephrasing the definition: Type 3 grammars are defined as: w1 --> w2 Where w1 is a non-terminal, and w2 is of the form: w2 = aB w2 = a Where B is a non-terminal, and a is a terminal. A special case is when w1 is the starting symbol and w2 is lambda(the empty string): w1 = S S --> lambda Two questions I couldn't find an answer for. First, Why can't w2 be of the form Ba. Second, Why lambda is only allowed for the starting symbol only. The book states that, regular languages are equivalent to Finite State Automaton, and we can easily see that a we can build FSA for both cases. I took a look at other resources, and these restrictions don't exist in these resources. Thanks,

  • Site hosted with Blogger has some display problems in IE

    - by dafactopedia
Hello guys..My site url is : Da Factopedia It opens up perfectly in all browsers Firefox, Opera, Safari, Chrome. Even in IE 8 the Home page is perfectly displayed . But if you click on any post page like this one : http://www.dafactopedia.com/2010/03/7-surprising-facts-about-sleep.html the right sidebar starts acting up. It starts floating within the main post area and I have no clue why this happens. • How does a programmer think?

    - by Gordon Potter
This may be a hopelessly vague question. But I am interested to hear whatever logical thought processes people go through when learning a new concept or trying to get their brain around code they might not have ever seen before. Basically, what general steps does one take to to break down problems and what does it take to "get it"? If you were to diagram a flowchart of how your mental process works when you look at code or try to solve a problem what might it look like? What common references, tips, and mental assumptions do you find useful in problem solving? How is this different between different domains? For example in what ways is a web programmer's thought process similar or different from a traditional desktop app developer's process?

  • Freebase Query with "JOINS"

    - by codemonkey
... Yeah, yeah, I know traditional joins don't exist. I actually like the freebase query methodology in theory, just having a little trouble getting it to actually work for me : ) Anyone have a dumb-simple example of getting Freebase data via MQL that pulls from two different "tables"? In particular, I'm trying to get automotive data... so for example, pulling fields from both /automotive/model_year and /automotive/trim_year. I've read the documentation (for hours actually). There's a distinct possibility that I'm looking right at such an example somewhere and just not seeing it because my OLTP brain just doesn't comprehend what it's seeing. * Note * ... that the two "types" I'm working with above are siblings, not parent/child. Does freebase even allow joining data between sibling nodes... I see examples of queries pulling from parent/child, but not from siblings I don't think (or I've overlooked them).

Good Day, I have a simple Python question that I'm having brain freeze on. This code snippet works. • Static struct in C++

    - by pingvinus
Hi, I want to define an structure, where some math constants would be stored. Here what I've got now: struct consts { //salt density kg/m3 static const double gamma; }; const double consts::gamma = 2350; It works fine, but there would be more than 10 floating point constants, so I doesn't want to wrote 'static const' before each of them. And define something like that: static const struct consts { //salt density kg/m3 double gamma; }; const double consts::gamma = 2350; It look fine, but I got these errors: 1. member function redeclaration not allowed 2. a nonstatic data member may not be defined outside its class I wondering if there any C++ way to do it?

  • Handling big user IDs returned by FQL in PHP

    - by ggambett
I'm using FQL to retrieve a list of users from Facebook. For consistency I get the result as JSON. This causes a problem - since the returned JSON encodes the user IDs as numbers, json_decode() converts these numbers to floating point values, because some are too big to fit in an int; of course, I need these IDs as strings. Since json_decode() does its own thing without accepting any behavior flags, I'm at a loss. Any suggestions on how to resolve this?

  • How to remove maximize button in Mac OS X tool window in Qt

    - by Andy Brice
I have a floating tool window. It works fine on Windows, but I can't get rid of the maximise button on Mac OS X. I have tried unsetting Qt::WindowMaximizeButtonHint and setting the window to fixed size. Nothing seems to work. MyWidget::MyWidget( QWidget* parent ) :QWidget( parent, Qt::Tool | Qt::CustomizeWindowHint ) { setupUi( this ); setFixedSize( sizeHint() ); // doesn't remove maximise button setWindowFlags( windowFlags() & ~Qt::WindowMaximizeButtonHint ); // doesn't remove maximise button } I don't want to use a frameless window. Any ideas? I am using Qt 4.4.

  • Selecting pictures with Jquery and Javascript

    - by Axschech
    I'm testing out a layout on a website using 3 pictures here: Schechterbusiness.info the left button works, making it go through the pictures. But I can't figure out how to get the right button to work, which is supposed to scroll through the other way. I know there's probably a way to do it with arrays but I can't wrap my brain around it. Halp! Code to scroll through pictures: $('#fryLink').click(function() { $('#hide').hide(); $('#img').hide(); count++; if(count == 1) { $('#img').attr("src","images/fry.png"); } else if(count == 2) { $('#img').attr("src","images/bender.png"); } else if(count == 3) { $('#img').attr("src","images/zoidberg.png"); } $('#img').show("fade"); if(count > 2) { count = 0; }

  • Adding to a multidimensional array in PHP

    - by b. e. hollenbeck
I have an array being returned from the database that looks like so: $data = array(201 => array('description' => blah, 'hours' => 0), 222 => array('description' => feh, 'hours' => 0); In the next bit of code, I'm using a foreach and checking the for the key in another table. If the next query returns data, I want to update the 'hours' value in that key's array with a new hours value: foreach ($data as $row => $value){ $query = $db->query($sql); if ($result){ $value['hours'] = $result['hours']; } I've tried just about every combination of declarations for the foreach loop, but I keep getting the error that it's a non-object. Surely this is easier than my brain is perceiving it.

  • Python Beginner: Selective Printing in loops

    - by Jonathan Straus
    Hi there. I'm a very new python user (had only a little prior experience with html/javascript as far as programming goes), and was trying to find some ways to output only intermittent numbers in my loop for a basic bicycle racing simulation (10,000 lines of biker positions would be pretty excessive :P). I tried in this loop several 'reasonable' ways to communicate a condition where a floating point number equals its integer floor (int, floor division) to print out every 100 iterations or so: for i in range (0,10000): i = i + 1 t = t + t_step #t is initialized at 0 while t_step is set at .01 acceleration_rider1 = (power_rider1 / (70 * velocity_rider1)) - (force_drag1 / 70) velocity_rider1 = velocity_rider1 + (acceleration_rider1 * t_step) position_rider1 = position_rider1 + (velocity_rider1 * t_step) force_drag1 = area_rider1 * (velocity_rider1 ** 2) acceleration_rider2 = (power_rider2 / (70 * velocity_rider1)) - (force_drag2 / 70) velocity_rider2 = velocity_rider2 + (acceleration_rider2 * t_step) position_rider2 = position_rider2 + (velocity_rider2 * t_step) force_drag2 = area_rider1 * (velocity_rider2 ** 2) if t == int(t): #TRIED t == t // 1 AND OTHER VARIANTS THAT DON'T WORK HERE:( print t, "biker 1", position_rider1, "m", "\t", "biker 2", position_rider2, "m"

  • Single dimension peak fitting

    - by bufferz
I have a single dimensional array of floating point values (c# doubles FYI) and I need to find the "peak" of the values ... as if graphed. I can't just take the highest value, as the peak is actually a plateau that has small fluctuations. This plateau is in the middle of a bunch of noise. I'm looking find a solution that would give me the center of this plateau. An example array might look like this: 1,2,1,1,2,1,3,2,4,4,4,5,6,8,8,8,8,7,8,7,9,7,5,4,4,3,3,2,2,1,1,1,1,1,2,1,1,1,1 where the peak is somewhere in the bolded section. Any ideas?

  • Sort a set of multidimensional arrays by array elements

    - by Joseph Carrington
    Let's say I've started here: $arr[0] = array('a' => 'a', 'int' => 10); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'foo', 'int' => 5); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'bar', 'int' => 12); And I want to get here: $arr[0] = array('a' => 'foo', 'int' => 5); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'a', 'int' => 10); $arr[1] = array('a' => 'bar', 'int' => 12); How can I sort the elements in an array by those elements elements? Multidimensional arrays always feel like a little bit more than my brain can handle (-_-) (until I figure them out and they seem super easy)

  • MySQL Insert not working with Date column

    - by Ian McCullough
Hello All, I am having an issue with a simple insert query into a table. I have this PHP Code $T_MEMBER = "INSERT INTO T_MEMBER (MEMBER_IDENTIFIER,LAST_NAME,FIRST_NAME,BIRTH_DATE) VALUES ('$memberID','$last','$first','$birthdate')"; mysql_query($T_MEMBER) or die(mysql_error()); Here are a few examples of what the query looks like if i echo it: INSERT INTO T_MEMBER (MEMBER_IDENTIFIER,LAST_NAME,FIRST_NAME,BIRTH_DATE) VALUES ('2007','Hayes','Karin','1958-30-10') INSERT INTO T_MEMBER (MEMBER_IDENTIFIER,LAST_NAME,FIRST_NAME,BIRTH_DATE) VALUES ('2020','Long','Peggy','1968-29-5') INSERT INTO T_MEMBER (MEMBER_IDENTIFIER,LAST_NAME,FIRST_NAME,BIRTH_DATE) VALUES ('2021','Torres','Diane','1968-30-8') BIRTH_DATE is a date type column. The problem is, after i do any of these queries, the date shows up as 000-00-00!!!! I have been wracking my brain and i cannot seem to find the issue. Thanks, Ian

  • How can I write a power function myself?

    - by Koning WWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW
Since I was 12, I was always wondering how I can make a function which calculates the power (e.g. 23) myself. In most languages these are included in the standard library, mostly as pow(double x, double y), but how can I write it myself? I was thinking about for loops, but it think my brain got in a loop (when I wanted to do a power with a non-integer exponent, like 54.5 or negatives 2-21) and I went crazy ;) So, how can I write a function which calculates the power of a real number? Thanks

  • Python: Getting the attribute name that the created object will be given

    - by cool-RR
Before I ask this, do note: I want this for debugging purposes. I know that this is going to be some bad black magic, but I want to use it just during debugging so I could identify my objects more easily. It's like this. I have some object from class A that creates a few B instances as attributes: class A(object): def __init__(self) self.vanilla_b = B() self.chocolate_b = B() class B(object): def __init__(self): # ... What I want is that in B.__init__, it will figure out the "vanilla_b" or whatever attribute name it was given, and then put that as the .name attribute to this specific B. Then in debugging when I see some B object floating around, I could know which one it is. Is there any way to do this?

  • .NET --- Textbox control - wait till user is done typing

    - by Cj Anderson
Greetings all, Is there a built in way to know when a user is done typing into a textbox? (Before hitting tab, Or moving the mouse) I have a database query that occurs on the textchanged event and everything works perfectly. However, I noticed that there is a bit of lag of course because if a user is quickly typing into the textbox the program is busy doing a query for each character. So what I was hoping for was a way to see if the user has finished typing. So if they type "a" and stop then an event fires. However, if they type "all the way" the event fires after the y keyup. I have some ideas floating around my head but I'm sure they aren't the most efficient. Like measuring the time since the last textchange event and if it was than a certain value then it would proceed to run the rest of my procedures. let me know what you think. Language: VB.NET Framework: .Net 2.0 --Edited to clarify "done typing"

  • Help with grasping (INNER?) JOIN

    - by Greenie
I'm having trouble building a query. I can do what I want in 3 different queries. SELECT id FROM table1 WHERE url LIKE '%/$downloadfile' put that in $url_id SELECT item_id FROM table2 WHERE rel_id = '$url_id'" put that in $item_id SELECT rel_id FROM table2 WHERE rel_id = '$item_id' AND field_id = '42'" put that in $user_id But from reading examples on joins and inner joins I think there's a more elegant way. I cant wrap my brain around writing a better query (but would like to) I can describe how it should go: table1 fields: id, url table2 fields item_id, rel_id, field_id I know the last part of table1.url (LIKE '%/$filename') with that I select table1.id. table1.id is equal to one entry in table2.rel_id. So get that and select the table2.item_id. In table2 there is another entry which has the same table2.item_id and it will have a table2.field_id = '42' And finally the value I need is the table2.rel_id where the table2.field_id was 42. I will fetch that value and put it in $user_id Can this be done with one query using joins/inner joins?

  • Are there any modern platforms with non-IEEE C/C++ float formats?

    - by Patrick Niedzielski
Hi all, I am writing a video game, Humm and Strumm, which requires a network component in its game engine. I can deal with differences in endianness easily, but I have hit a wall in attempting to deal with possible float memory formats. I know that modern computers have all a standard integer format, but I have heard that they may not all use the IEEE standard for floating-point integers. Is this true? While certainly I could just output it as a character string into each packet, I would still have to convert to a "well-known format" of each client, regardless of the platform. The standard printf() and atod() would be inadequate. Please note, because this game is a Free/Open Source Software program that will run on GNU/Linux, *BSD, and Microsoft Windows, I cannot use any proprietary solutions, nor any single-platform solutions. Cheers, Patrick

  • Adding a new view to a Window-based app (re: MapKit tutorial)

    - by blackkettle
I'm trying add a new view in a window-based application but not really getting anywhere. I've been going through a great MapKit tutorial lately, http://mithin.in/2009/06/22/using-iphone-sdk-mapkit-framework-a-tutorial/ and have successfully set it up and added some further buttons and customizations. However I've gotten stuck at what I assume ought to be a brain-dead simple step. I have added a toolbar to the bottom of the app, and a 'settings' style button. Following this I created a SettingsViewController complete with it's own view. Now I'd like to connect them but I've had absolutely no luck trying to figure out how to do this. I've also gone through several other good tutorials lately, http://miketeo.net/wp/index.php/2008/08/31/simple-iphone-tutorial-part-1.html http://blog.webscale.co.in/?p=228 http://www.iphonesdkarticles.com/2009/01/uitableview-searching-table-view.html but I've gotten lost trying to tie these two bits together. I'm sure it is quite trivial to link these two items but I've had no luck.

  • Python - How to find a correlation between two vectors ?

    - by psihodelia
Given two vectors X and Y I have to find their correlation, i.e. their linear dependence/independence. Both vectors have equal dimension. A resulted answer should be a floating point number from [-1.0 .. 1.0]. Example: X=[-1, 2, 0] Y=[ 4, 2, -0.3] Find y=cor(X,Y) such that y belongs to [-1.0 .. 1.0]. It should be a simple construction involving a list-comprehension. No external library is allowed. UPDATE: ok, if dot product is enough, then here is my solution: nX = 1/(sum([x*x for x in X]) ** 0.5) nY = 1/(sum([y*y for y in Y]) ** 0.5) cor = sum([(x*nX)*(y*nY) for x,y in zip(X,Y) ]) right?

  • Rails ActiveRecord: Find All Users Except Current User

    - by SingleShot
I feel this should be very simple but my brain is short-circuiting on it. If I have an object representing the current user, and want to query for all users except the current user, how can I do this, taking into account that the current user can sometimes be nil? This is what I am doing right now: def index @users = User.all @users.delete current_user end What I don't like is that I am doing post-processing on the query result. Besides feeling a little wrong, I don't think this will work nicely if I convert the query over to be run with will_paginate. Any suggestions for how to do this with a query? Thanks.

  • Recommended Python publish/subscribe/dispatch module ?

    - by Eli Bendersky
From PyPubSub: Pypubsub provides a simple way for your Python application to decouple its components: parts of your application can publish messages (with or without data) and other parts can subscribe/receive them. This allows message "senders" and message "listeners" to be unaware of each other: one doesn't need to import the other a sender doesn't need to know "who" gets the messages, what the listeners will do with the data, or even if any listener will get the message data. similarly, listeners don't need to worry about where messages come from. This is a great tool for implementing a Model-View-Controller architecture or any similar architecture that promotes decoupling of its components. There seem to be quite a few Python modules for publishing/subscribing floating around the web, from PyPubSub, to PyDispatcher to simple "home-cooked" classes. Can you recommend a module that works well in most cases ? Which modules have you had positive experience with ? Negative ? Thanks in advance
