• Send post data while opening SSE connection

  I'm trying to establish SSE connection and do some long-taking actions on server-side, informing user about how it goes through SSE events. Actually, I don't understand how would I send some data along with new connection. I have to combine regular ajax with new EventSource or there is a way to transfer post data inside that event? Here is what I have so far, and I need to send pretty big JSON with the request. • MinGW screw up with COLORREF and RGB

  I am trying to build a 3rd party open source project using MinGW. One of the dependencies is wxWidgets. When I try to make the project from MSYS I get a compiler error from /MinGW/msys/1.0/local/include/wx-2.8/wx/msw/private.h In function 'COLORREF wxColourToRGB(const wxColour&)': error: cannot convert 'RGB' to 'COLORREF {aka long unsigned in}' in return This is somewhat odd given that, according to Microsoft the RGB macro returns a COLORREF. In fact, looking in H:\MinGW\include I find wingdi.h with the following code #define RGB(r,g,b) ((COLORREF)((BYTE)(r)|((BYTE)(g) << 8)|((BYTE)(b) << 16))) What sort of thing would cause this error? Is there some way I can check to see if COLORREF and RGB are being included from wingdi.h and not somewhere else? Is that even worth checking? Specifications GCC version 4.7.2 wxWidgets version 2.8.12 (I'm new to C++ and MinGW specifically but generally computer and programming literate)

• Codesample with bufferoverflow (gets method). Why does it not behave as expected?

  This an extract from an c program that should demonstrate a bufferoverflow. void foo() { char arr[8]; printf(" enter bla bla bla"); gets(arr); printf(" you entered %s\n", arr); } The question was "How many input chars can a user maximal enter without a creating a buffer overflow" My initial answer was 8, because the char-array is 8 bytes long. Although I was pretty certain my answer was correct, I tried a higher amount of chars, and found that the limit of chars that I can enter, before I get a segmentation fault is 11. (Im running this on A VirtualBox Ubuntu) So my question is: Why is it possible to enter 11 chars into that 8 byte array?

• Java Sound Clip Looping Frame Position

  Hi, I have a little problem with a loopting clip: If you have a soundfile e.g. 20000 samples long, the frame position will not reset after looping, so I get values that are "out of bounds" of the original soundfile. As I want to draw a position marker on my waveform, I'm a bit confused how to achive. At this time I just get myClip.getLongFramePosition() but this does not work as described above. Does anyone have an idea how to fix that? Is there a possibility to count how often a clip was looped before? Regards

• Entry points on different urls possible?

  Hi, I've got a typical gwt project, but am using some url rewriting techniques such that urls entered like: www.mysite.com/johndoe www.mysite.com/janedoe all get served by my main entrypoint project.jsp file. This works great when deployed. When I'm running in hosted mode, it's a total bummer because changing the url in the browser breaks the link with the hosted-mode debugging, such that when I make changes to the source in eclipse and refresh, those changes are not immediately shown. I need to recompile the app and relaunch, and we all know how long that takes. Is there any way to somehow get the hosted-mode environment to recognize that the same webapp is being served on these different urls, and just reconnect the debugging connection? We basically get: http://localhost:8888/myproject.jsp?gwt.codesvr=192.168.1.2:9997 when launching hosted mode, I'd like: http://localhost:8888/johndoe to just reconnect to the debugger, if possible. • iPhone screen rotates at random !

  I use a tabBar Controller as root controller. It has 4 tabs and each of its ViewControllers has - (BOOL)shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation:(UIInterfaceOrientation)toInterfaceOrientation { return YES; } as long as the tabBarController itself. But when I rotate the device (real or simulator), the screen turns at random! If it doesn't turn when I open the application it would have the same behavior until I quit the app. I tried to add the 4 viewControllers one by one in IB to see if one was problematic, but I obtained the same issue. It only always works when there is no tabs at all! Please tell me if you have any ideas. Thanks!

  What is the best C++ (not C++11) way of joining two enums from autogenerated class similar to one presented below: namespace A { namespace B { ... class CarInfo { enum State { // basically same enums defined in different classes Running, Stopped, Broken } } class BikeInfo { enum State { // basically same enums defined in different classes Running, Stopped, Broken } } } } What is needed is unified enum State for both classes that is seen to outside world alongside with safe type conversion. The best and probably most straightforward way I came up with is to create external enum: enum State { Running, Stopped, Broken } together with conversion functions State stateEnumConv(A::B::CarInfo::State aState); State stateEnumConv(A::B::BikeInfo::State aState); A::B::CarInfo::State stateEnumConv(State aState); A::B::BikeInfo::State stateEnumConv(State aState); Direction into right approach is needed. Gosh coming from C I hate those long namespaces everywhere an I wish it could be only A::B level like in presented example. Four conversion functions seem redundant note that CarInfo::State and BikeInfo::State has same enum "members".

• Visual C++ 2008: Finding the cause of slow link times

  I have a legacy C++ project that takes an annoyingly long time to build (several minutes, even for small incremental changes), and I found most of the time was spent linking. The project is already using precompiled headers and incremental compilation. I have enabled the "/time" command line parameter in the hope I would get more details about what is slowing the linker, and got the following output: 1>Linking... 1> MD Merge: Total time = 59.938s 1> Generate Transitions: Total time = 0.500s 1> MD Finalize: Total time = 7.328s 1>Pass 1: Interval #1, time = 71.718s 1>Pass 2: Interval #2, time = 8.969s 1>Final: Total time = 80.687s 1>Final: Total time = 80.953s Is there a way to get more details about each of these steps? For example, I would like to find if they are spending most time linking to a specific .lib or .obj file. Also, is there any documentation that explains what each of these steps do?

• Proper permission and directoy location for Git Version Control

  I am using Git Version Control on an remote server and I have set up a repository that multiple people will be using to push/fetch from. I have put the repo under /srv/subdir/git/.git I have been experiencing problem after problem it seems like. a) Is this location suitable for handling a project that will need to be accessed/modified by multiple developers and a designer? Or is there a better location? b)Do I need to modify the permissions on the subdir/ and git/ directories in order to allow remote access? If I do what is the appropriate permissions I should allow? I know this is a faily long request/question, but unfortunately like many other topics with well covered documentation, documentation does not always cover best practices. I would appreciate anybodies advice and suggestions? Thanks

• Facebook user_id as MongoDB BSON ObjectId?

  I'm rebuilding Lovers on Facebook with Sinatra & Redis. I like Redis because it doesn't have the long (12-byte) BSON ObjectIds and I am storing sets of Facebook user_ids for each user. The sets are requests_sent, requests_received, & relationships, and they all contain Facebook user ids. I'm thinking of switching to MongoDB because I want to use it's geospatial indexing. If I do, I'd want to use the FB user ids as the _id field because I want the sets to be small and I want the JSON responses to be small. But, is the BSON ObjectId better (more efficient for MongoDB) to use than just an integer (fb user_id)?

  I have a form with 3 sections in it. Each section has a dedicated div for fairly long contextual help messages regarding the input that has focus. My question is, if I give each of these help divs a class of "form-tip" and each input that has a tip the class "has-tip", how can I get the tip to always show up in the previous "form-tip" div? Something like: $('.has-tip').each(focus(function() { var tip = $(this).attr('title'); // Find most recent $('.form-tip') in the DOM and populate it with tip })); I hope that makes sense... • Where is the chink in Google Chrome's armor?

  While browsing with Chrome, I noticed that it responds extremely fast (in comparison with IE and Firefox on my laptop) in terms of rendering pages, including JavaScript heavy sites like gmail. This is what googlebook on Chrome has to say tabs are hosted in process rather than thread. compile javascript using V8 engine as opposed to interpreting. Introduce new virtual machine to support javascript heavy apps introduce "hidden class transitions" and apply dynamic optimization to speed up things. Replace inefficient "Conservative garbage colllection" scheme with more precise garbage collection scheme. Introduce their own task scheduler and memory manager to manage the browser environment. All this sounds so familiar, and Microsoft has been doing such things for long time.. Windows os, C++, C# etc compilers, CLR, and so on. So why isn't Microsoft or any other browser vendor taking Chrome's approach? Is there a flaw in Chrome's approach? If not, is the rest of browser vendor community caught unaware with Google's approach?

  I have a program that generates and outputs a sequence of simple sample math homework tasks, like: 1 + 1 = ... 3 + 3 = ... 2 + 5 = ... 3 + 7 = ... 4 + 2 = ... a sequence can be quite long, and I'd like to save space when this sequence is printed by converting it as follows: 1 + 1 = ... 3 + 7 = ... 3 + 3 = ... 4 + 2 = ... 2 + 5 = ... that is, wrapping the lines into the two or more columns. I was expecting the column linux utility to do the job using the -c N option witn N=2, however, it still outputs the lines in one column whatever the N is. How would I do the column-ifying of the sequence of lines?

• Should I create subclass NSManagedObject or not?

  Hi, I have spent a few days learning and writing NSCoding and finally got it working. However, it took very long to archive and unarchive the (quite complex) object graph, which is unacceptable. After searching the internet for some time, I think the better way is to use core data. Do you recommend that 1) I should rewrite all my classes as subclasses of NSManagedObject or 2) should I create an instance variable of NSManagedObject in each of my class so that any changes to the class also updates its core data representation? Doing either way will need significant changes to the exiting classes and I think I have to update lots of unit test cases as well if it changes the way the classes are initialized. What do you recommend? I really don't want to head to the wrong approach again... Thanks!

  hi. maybe it's a bit strange - and maybe there are other tools to do this but, well.. i am using the following classic bash command to find all files which contain some string: find . -type f | xargs grep "something" i have a great number of files, on multiple depths. first occurence of "something" is enough for me, but find continues searching, and takes a long time to complete the rest of the files. what i would like to do is something like a "feedback" from grep back to find so that find could stop searching for more files. is such a thing possible? thank you

• How can I implement "real time" messaging on Google AppEngine?

  I'm creating a web application on Google AppEngine where I want the user to be notified a quickly as possible after certain events occour. The problem is similar to say a chat server in that I need something happening on one connection (someone is writing a message in a chat room) to propagate to a number of other connections (other people in that chat room gets the message). To get speedy updates from the server to the client I'm planning on using long polling with XmlHttpRequest, hoping that AppEngine won't interfere other than possibly restriing the timeout. The real problem however is efficient notification between connections on AppEngine. Is there any support for this type of cross connection notification on AppEngine that does not involve busy-waiting? The only tools I can think of to do this at all is either using the data storage (slow) or memcache (unreliable), and none of them would let me avoid busy-waiting. Note: I know about XMPP support on AppEngine. It's related, but I want a browser based solution, sending messages to the users by XMPP is not an option.

• Ideas for Quick Hierarchical Listing - .NET

  I have a table in SQL Server listing corporate departments and their sections and subsections (3 levels). I would like to create some web-based listing of this, but similar to a TreeList. I was thinking to set up nested Ajax Accordions, but it was taking me way too long to put together. I would even settle for a GridView with non-repeating column values. Is there a way I can implement my idea without it taking me more than an hour or so for a newbie to complete? Any controls in ASP.NET or Ajax I can bind to would be great.

  As long as the mouse is over a specific control, we show some form. When the mouse leaves the control, we hide the control after a small timeout. This is standard hover behavior. However, when a control (for example a Treeview) has a scrollbar, and the mouse is ON or OVER the scrollbar, the events don't fire ... If we could get a reference to the scrollbar control, this would solve our problem, as we would add the same listener events to the scrollbar. However, the scrollbar isn't accessible as far as I know ... How can we solve this problem ?

  I am a long time agile advocated but one of the things that bothers me about Agile is that a lot of agile practitioners, especially the younger ones, have thrown out or are missing a whole lot of good (non Scrum, non XP) practices. Alistair Cockburn's style of writing Use Cases springs to mind; orthogonal arrays (pairwise testing) is another. I hope this is an okay forum to ask this, but since I read mostly Agile related books and articles and work with mostly Agile folk ... is there anything I'm missing? Thanks for all your help.   Hello. How would I get last 12 digits of a string using mysql? Let's say I have a varchar field with a tracking number, that may be anywhere from 5 to 20 varchars long. But I only need to select last 12 digits or less if there are less. so in a field = 12345678123456789012 I would only need to get what's in brackets field = 12345678[123456789012] I saw a few examples using mid, etc, but they dont' produce the desired result or I can't find an example that makes sense :-( Thank you.

  Hi, does BlackBerry has any possibility to track focus or scroll change direction? I will describe a case. On UI we have a list and some horizontal tab bar (tab bar at top and below the list actually). If User is somewhere in the middle of a list and decides to click another tab, it appears a little difficult to put focus on the Tab control, so User scrolls to the first list item and after changes focus to tab (as a result very long operation). The point here How to catch event of horizontal scroll to change currently focused tab? And after if you scroll (by trackball) vertically you go back to list.   We are using TFS Continuous Development model Main Trunk - Various Development branches - Various Release branches All merging back to main trunk Now we need some major changes to our folder structure and solutions How do you handle folder restructure in above model of TFS usage? do i need to draw line and create new structure from latest Main trunk and lock all branches and do updates then creates branches with restructured new trunk. Or am i underestimating TFS, would be able to handle major folder structure updates and propagate over to branches. As long as i know if we move around folders in branch or trunk it don't like it.
