• Can a primary key be equal to a different column?

  I know that a primary key must be unique, but is it okay for a primary key to be equal to a different column in the same table by coincidence? For instance, I have 2 tables. One table is called person that holds information about a person (ID, email, telephone, address, name). The other table is staff (ID, pID(person ID), salary, position). In staff the ID column is the primary key and is used to uniquely identify a staff member. The number is from 1 - 100. However, the pID (person ID) may be equal to the ID. For instance the staff ID may be 1 and the pID that it references to may be equal to 1. Is that okay?

• Using Forms authentication with remote auth system?

  I am working on a website that uses a remote websites database to check for authentication (they are both share some database tables, but are separate website...) Right now I check the username and password against the remote websites account / member table, if there is a match I create a session. Questions: Is this secure? On authenticated pages I just check if a session of a specific type exists.Is it possible for someone to create an empty session or something that could bypass this? Is it possible to use Forms authentication with this setup? Right now if a user is authenticated I just get an object back with the username, email and id.

• Which messanging services can BlackBerry apps integrate with?

  I'm in charge of having a BlackBerry app developed that translates the contents of a message from one language to another. So the aim would be to have a button at the bottom of a received message which says 'translate this'. I've heard that this kind of thing is possible using J2ME plus the native BlackBerry API. Can this be done for all kinds of messanging features on the Blackberry, or just some? ie I'm thinking SMS, email and BB messages. Secondly, given that the translation itself is done via a web request, I feel like this should be a fairly lightweight application. Would anyone care to hazard a guess how long it might take an experienced contractor to develop such an app?

• Rails: Best practice to store user settings?

  Hi, I'm wondering what the best way is to store user settings? For a web 2.0 app I want users to be able to select certain settings. At the moment is it only when to receive email notifications. The easiest way would be to just create a Model "Settings" and have a column for every setting and then have a 1-1 relationship with users. But is there a pattern to solve this better? Is it maybe better to store the info in the user table itself? Or should I use a table with "settings_name" and "settings_value" to be completely open about the type of settings stored there (without having to run any migrations when adding options)? What is your opinion? Thanks

• Git 1.7.10 asks me for github username and password

  Since I have the new version it doesnt ask me anymore for the password I set in my ssh key file. It asks now directly for a github username and password when I push every time. Is this a new feature of git or changed it in the past or is there something what changed on github? I tried to authenticate using ssh and the email and password from my ssh ke file and it worked. • Read Velocity Tokens/Tag from .vm file

  I have an application where in I am trying to create a velocity template repository which will help me centralise all my email templates and will allow me to create a communication hub. All templates will be called at runtime and populates with data via services. My problem is that I need to provide users with optional and compulsory params list when they define the template inputs for the velocity template. Is there a way to read the tokens/tags from the velocity template file and extract them?? Like I want a list of tokens $name.address.streetName to be available to me from .vm file. I do not want to go for Regex . I do not have to cache or reuse them , its just going to be a one time read and store the default,compulsory & optional params in the database. • Form variable does not refresh with ajax call

The form submits correctly the first time but if you make any subsequent changes to the text in the form and then submit again then jquery does not pick up on the changes and posts the old data.   I'm working with ruby on rails 2.3.4 and I yesterday I found out I cannot send emails any more. The email-related credentials are ok because I could send emails until I upgraded my rails version about two weeks ago. • Starting out with Exchange Server development

  Hi, We've written several Outlook Add-ins for various projects and have now been asked to look at writing a Exchange server add-in. We will need to inspect all incoming / outgoing msgs and tag / file them into a document management system. If it's a message that we are interested in we would ideally like to change the default icon that is displayed in Outlook. We could I guess settle for Categorising / colour coding the email but we've been asked for a icon. Any guidance on how to get started / killer reference apps much appricaiated. Oh we will be needing to target both Exchange 2003 and 2007. vb.net is our bag but were fine with c# too. Thanks in advance - liking the site thus far btw

• I need to create a web service using .NET-- where should I start?

  Hi All I am trying to implement a feature. But I've never had anything to do with "Web Services" before, other than using them. I have a desktop application, and I want that application to be able to sort of "post" some information (i.e. email address, username, user-selected options (just plain text) etc) to an application or "web service" on my ASP.NET web server.   I'm looking for a pre-built solution I can use in my RoR application. I'm ideally looking for something similar to the ASP.NET Forms authentication that provides email validation, sign-up controls, and allows users to reset their passwords. Oh yeah, and easily allows me to pull the user that is currently logged into the application. I've started to look into the already written pieces, but I've found it to be really confusing. I've looked at LoginGenerator, RestfulAuthentication, SaltedLoginGenerator, but there doesn't seem to be one place that has great tutorials or provide a comparison of them. If there's a site I just haven't discovered yet, or if there is a de-facto standard that most people use, I'd appreciate the helping hand.

  I used the following in routes to add a new action to my Email controller: map.resources :emails, :member => { :newfwd => :put} The expected result was that newfwd_email_path(:id = 1) would generate the following urL: emails/1/newfwd It does. But I get an error, it treats '1' as an action and 'newfwd' as an id. I want '1' to be interpreted as the id for emails, upon which the newfwd action acts. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. (Note: I am using Rails 2.3.8)

  I have 3 tables in my database. ab_contacts id first_name last_name addressbook_id ab_addressbooks name id co_comments id link_id comment I'd like to create a query that will let me select all the contacts and comments related to them in a given addressbook. To select all the people in a given addressbook, I can use: select count(*) from ab_contacts where addressbook_id = '50'; This returns 8152 people. However, when I run my query: select ab_contacts.first_name, ab_contacts.last_name, ab_contacts.email, ab_addressbooks.name, co_comments.comments from ab_contacts JOIN ab_addressbooks ON (ab_contacts.addressbook_id = ab_addressbooks.id) JOIN co_comments ON (ab_contacts.id = co_comments.link_id) WHERE ab_contacts.addressbook_id = '50';` the format works, but I only get 1045 results. I'm sure there is something I am missing, but I cannot figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  I am working on an Outlook 2007 Add-in in C# (VS2008) and we want to send some background email items only when Outlook is not busy doing something else. Is there a .net way to see if Outlook is busy doing other things (perhaps due to other add-ins or the like taking up CPU cycles)? Alternately, is there a way to send emails such that they never appear in the Outbox? We need a method that would not require any additional software be installed. Thanks for any input.

  Im new to Smarty in combination with PHP and I really like it. Unfortunatly im running into a problem while validating fields after a $_POST has been done. I've made an array called $errors and use that to save error messages in, for example: $errors[] .= "Wrong email";. My problem is in sending the $errors array over to the template so I can use it to display the error messages. My question: How do you 'transfer' the $errors variable over to the template file so you can use it there with, for example {foreach}. I was planning on doing something like {if $hasErrors} {foreach from=errors item=error} <li>{$error}</li> {/foreach} {/if} Thanks in advance
