  • How does glClear() improve performance?

    - by Jon-Eric
Apple's Technical Q&A on addressing flickering (QA1650) includes the following paragraph. (Emphasis mine.) You must provide a color to every pixel on the screen. At the beginning of your drawing code, it is a good idea to use glClear() to initialize the color buffer. A full-screen clear of each of your color, depth, and stencil buffers (if you're using them) at the start of a frame can also generally improve your application's performance. On other platforms, I've always found it to be an optimization to not clear the color buffer if you're going to draw to every pixel. (Why waste time filling the color buffer if you're just going to overwrite that clear color?) How can a call to glClear() improve performance?

  • Sorting NSSets of a core data entity - Objective-c

    - by ncohen
Hi everyone, I would like to sort the data of a core data NSSet (I know we can do it only with arrays but let me explain...). I have an entity user who has a relationship to-many with the entity recipe. A recipe has the attributes name and id. I would like to get the data such that: Code: NSArray *id = [[user.recipes valueForKey:@"identity"] allObjects]; NSArray *name = [[user.recipes valueForKey:@"name"] allObjects]; if I take the object at index 1 in both arrays, they correspond to the same recipe... Thanks

  • UIScrollView notifications

    - by ryyst
Hi, I'm coding an app that works much like Apple's Weather.app: There's a UIPageControl at the bottom and a UIScrollView in the middle of the screen. In my code, I implemented the - (void)scrollViewDidEndDecelerating:(UIScrollView *)scrollView method to figure out when the user did move to a new page. If they move to a new page, I load the adjacent pages' data, as to make further page-switching faster. (In one of Apple's examples, the - (void)scrollViewDidScroll:(UIScrollView *)sender is used, but that causes my app to shortly hang when loading a new page, so it's not suitable.) That code works very well. I'm using scrollRectToVisible:: to programmatically scroll inside the scrollview when the user clicks the UIPageControl. The problem is that the scrollRectToVisible: doesn't post a notification to the UIScrollViewDelegate when it's done scrolling - so the code responsible for loading adjacent pages never get's called when using the UIPageControl. Is there any way to make the UIScrollView notify its delegate when it gets called by the scrollRectToVisible: method? Or will I have to use threads in order to prevent my app from freezing? Thanks! -- Ry

  • How do I support the touch of the navigation bar label?

    - by iaefai
I have an editor that I am making, and I need a way of editing the document's title. I was considering touching the title of the navigation item and have a custom view appear. I did this in an initial version of the application with a button bar item (and target/action), but I cannot seem to find a way to do it with the managed navigation bar. The alternative I was considering was putting another bar at the bottom with an item to do just that, but it doesn't seem like the best design if I don't need to do it, as it takes away from viewing space. I've had this problem before but was able to work around it until now, Basically I'm creating a custom UIbutton setting its image as a uiimage and then the button that has had a label until I implimented the below code now loses its label. I need that label because it is set programatically in code that follows. NSString *imageName = [NSString stringWithFormat:kNameOfButtonimage ]; UIImage *image = [UIImage imageNamed:imageName]; [button setImage:image forState:UIControlStateNormal ]; Any help you could lend would be mucho appreciated. -nick

  • drawRect context Error

    - by user361228
Hi, I heard that a lot of people get a context error by not using drawRect Now I have this: - (void)drawRect:(CGRect)rect { NSLog(@"drawRect: Starts"); CGContextRef context = UIGraphicsGetCurrentContext(); CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor(context, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0); CGContextSetLineWidth(context, 3.0); CGContextMoveToPoint(context, lineStart.x, lineStart.y); CGContextAddLineToPoint(context, lineEnd.x, lineEnd.y); CGContextStrokePath(context); } Error: <Error>: CGContextSetRGBStrokeColor: invalid context Which had work on previous programs, but not on this one. Whats different: I have a view controller, which calls this UIView: -(void)createLine:(CGPoint)start:(CGPoint)end { NSLog(@"createLine: Starts"); lineEnd = start; lineStart = end; self = [super initWithFrame:drawRect:CGRectMake(fmin(lineStart.x, lineEnd.x), fmin(lineStart.y, lineEnd.y), fabs(lineStart.x - lineEnd.x), fabs(lineStart.y - lineEnd.y))]; } This is my first question, and I am not sure how much info code I should be putting here so be easy on me :D Thanks

  • NSURLConnection not "firing" until UITableView scrolls..

    - by Simon
Hi, I've got a UITableView that loads an image asynchronously and places it in the UITableViewCell once it's loaded (I'm using almost the exact same code as in the "LazyTableImages" tutorial). This works fine for all images when I scroll the table, but it's not loading the images that are first in the view. The code is definitely working fine as the class that actually sends the NSURLConnection request is being called correctly (I added an NSLog and it reached the console). The NSURLConnection is just not calling the delegate methods (didReceiveData, connectionDidFinishLoading, etc). Here's my code: HomeController.m - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { static NSString *CellIdentifier = @"Cell"; UITableViewCell *cell = [tableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:CellIdentifier]; if (cell == nil) { cell = [[[UITableViewCell alloc] initWithStyle:UITableViewCellStyleDefault reuseIdentifier:CellIdentifier] autorelease]; NSArray *feed = [feeds objectAtIndex: indexPath.row]; /** * Name of person */ [...] /** * Feed entry */ [...] /** * Misc work */ [...] } FeedRecord *feedRecord = [self.entries objectAtIndex:indexPath.row]; if( !feedRecord.image ) { if (self.table.dragging == NO && self.table.decelerating == NO) { [self startIconDownload:feedRecord forIndexPath:indexPath]; } cell.imageView.image = [UIImage imageNamed:@"Placeholder.png"]; } return cell; } - (void)startIconDownload:(FeedRecord *)feedRecord forIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath { IconDownloader *iconDownloader = [imageDownloadsInProgress objectForKey:indexPath]; if (iconDownloader == nil) { iconDownloader = [[IconDownloader alloc] init]; iconDownloader.feedRecord = feedRecord; iconDownloader.indexPathInTableView = indexPath; iconDownloader.delegate = self; [imageDownloadsInProgress setObject:iconDownloader forKey:indexPath]; [iconDownloader startDownload]; [iconDownloader release]; } } IconDownload.m #import "IconDownloader.h" #import "FeedRecord.h" #define kAppIconHeight 48 @implementation IconDownloader @synthesize feedRecord; @synthesize indexPathInTableView; @synthesize delegate; @synthesize activeDownload; @synthesize imageConnection; #pragma mark - (void)dealloc { [feedRecord release]; [indexPathInTableView release]; [activeDownload release]; [imageConnection cancel]; [imageConnection release]; [super dealloc]; } - (void)startDownload { NSLog(@"%@ %@",@"Started downloading", feedRecord.profilePicture); // this shows in log self.activeDownload = [NSMutableData data]; // alloc+init and start an NSURLConnection; release on completion/failure NSURLConnection *conn = [[NSURLConnection alloc] initWithRequest: [NSURLRequest requestWithURL: [NSURL URLWithString:feedRecord.profilePicture]] delegate:self]; self.imageConnection = conn; NSLog(@"%@",conn); // this shows in log [conn release]; } - (void)cancelDownload { [self.imageConnection cancel]; self.imageConnection = nil; self.activeDownload = nil; } #pragma mark - #pragma mark Download support (NSURLConnectionDelegate) - (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didReceiveData:(NSData *)data { NSLog(@"%@ %@",@"Got data for", feedRecord.profilePicture); [self.activeDownload appendData:data]; } - (void)connection:(NSURLConnection *)connection didFailWithError:(NSError *)error { NSLog(@"%@",@"Fail!"); // Clear the activeDownload property to allow later attempts self.activeDownload = nil; // Release the connection now that it's finished self.imageConnection = nil; } - (void)connectionDidFinishLoading:(NSURLConnection *)connection { NSLog(@"%@ %@",@"Done", feedRecord.profilePicture); // Set appIcon and clear temporary data/image UIImage *image = [[UIImage alloc] initWithData:self.activeDownload]; self.feedRecord.image = image; self.activeDownload = nil; [image release]; // Release the connection now that it's finished self.imageConnection = nil; NSLog(@"%@ %@",@"Our delegate is",delegate); // call our delegate and tell it that our icon is ready for display [delegate feedImageDidLoad:self.indexPathInTableView]; } @end Has anyone else experienced anything like this or can identify an issue with my code? Thanks!

  • Multiple View App shows Blank Screen in Simulator

    - by Brett Coburn
Hello; I am developing a simple app that first shows a menu screen, and when a button is pressed, a game screen appears. I was able to develop the game screen without any issues, but when I changed the code to first display the menu, the simulator showed a blank screen. I've read all the articles on connecting views with IB but I can't figure this out. Any help would be appreciated. • Change width of UIImageView

    - by BenMills
How would you change just the width of a UIImageView in objective-c? Currently I'm doing this: imageview.frame = GCRectMake(x,y,width, height); But when I change the width it seems to just change the position rather then change the size.

Can any one tell me how to search with a particular keyword (eg. medical services, garages) by using user current locations and annotate onto the map and when the user taps on the annotations it should show the complete address of the locations which is annotated. Can anyone help me in this?

  • Memory leak using (void) alloc

    - by Rudiger
I have seen a similar line of code floating about in Apples code: (void)[[URLRequest alloc] initializeRequestWithValues:postBody url:verifySession httpHeader:nil delegate:self]; URLRequest is my own custom class. I didn't write this and I think the guy that did just grabbed it from Apple's example. To me this should leak and when I test it I'm pretty sure it leaks 16 bytes. Would it? I know how to fix it if it does but wasn't sure as it was taken from Apple's code.

  • UIImage resize (Scale proportion)

    - by Mustafa
    The following piece of code is resizing the image perfectly, but the problem is that it messes up the aspect ratio (resulting in a skewed image). Any pointers? // Change image resolution (auto-resize to fit) + (UIImage *)scaleImage:(UIImage*)image toResolution:(int)resolution { CGImageRef imgRef = [image CGImage]; CGFloat width = CGImageGetWidth(imgRef); CGFloat height = CGImageGetHeight(imgRef); CGRect bounds = CGRectMake(0, 0, width, height); //if already at the minimum resolution, return the orginal image, otherwise scale if (width <= resolution && height <= resolution) { return image; } else { CGFloat ratio = width/height; if (ratio > 1) { bounds.size.width = resolution; bounds.size.height = bounds.size.width / ratio; } else { bounds.size.height = resolution; bounds.size.width = bounds.size.height * ratio; } } UIGraphicsBeginImageContext(bounds.size); [image drawInRect:CGRectMake(0.0, 0.0, bounds.size.width, bounds.size.height)]; UIImage *imageCopy = UIGraphicsGetImageFromCurrentImageContext(); UIGraphicsEndImageContext(); return imageCopy; }

The interesting thing is that CFNetwork is not visible in the dialog box at all. Am I missing anything? Do I have to add/install CFNetwork in some other way? Screenshot - Thanks in advance.

  • The accossoryView of a UITableViewCell disappears after the visible view is changed

    - by Luca
Hi! I'm experiencing this strange situation. I have a UITableView where, when the user selects a cell, a long (network) process begins. So, I performed this in a background thread and I placed (in the didSelectRowAtIndexPath) a UIActivityIndicatorView as the accessory view. This is what I wrote: UITableViewCell* cell = [self.tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:indexPath]; UIActivityIndicatorView* activityView = [[UIActivityIndicatorView alloc] initWithActivityIndicatorStyle:UIActivityIndicatorViewStyleWhite]; cell.accessoryView = activityView; [activityView startAnimating]; [activityView release]; everything seems to work correctly, except that, if during a loading process (when the indicator is animated), I switch the view using a UITabBar, when I go back to the UITableView, the UIActivityIndicatorView that should still be there has disappeared. Any idea of what I did wrong? Thanks!
