• Fast Bookmarking In Firefox

  Making bookmarks in Firefox has become tedious. Can any one point me to a bookmarking extension that works as follows... Decide you want to bookmark a page Left click your way to the target bookmark folder Right the target bookmark folder to get a "Bookmark this page here" option. (It is this "Bookmark this page here" add on that I am looking for) (Edit the book mark title tags etc) Click done Currently you have to: Decide you want to bookmark a page Click on the bookmarks menu pulldown Click on "bookmark this page" Click on the "folder" pulldown Click on "Bookmarks tool bar" or "Bookmarks menu" Left click your way to the target bookmark folder (in a teeny window that that doesn't move the focus as you expand folders) (Edit the book mark title tags etc) Click "Done" That would be four (or five) steps to replace the seven (or eight) steps to make a bookmark in an existing folder. @Chris I assume you are referring me to "Read It Later" http://www.ideashower.com/ideas/launched/read-it-later/ I'll take a look.

• double-click does not open the default program

  I installed Ubuntu 12.04, with texlive-full and texworks. When I double-click a .tex file in Nautilus, it pops up a Do you want to run "xxxxxxxx.tex", or display it contents? "xxxxxxxx.tex" is an executable text file. Run in Terminal Display Cancel Run If I choose Display, it opens texworks. How can I make it open without seeing the above conversation window? By the way, is .tex file indeed an executable file? ADDED Just for the case, my ~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list file looks like the following: [Default Applications] text/html=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/http=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/https=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/about=google-chrome.desktop x-scheme-handler/unknown=google-chrome.desktop text/x-tex=texworks.desktop x-scheme-handler/mailto=google-chrome.desktop [Added Associations] text/x-tex=texworks.desktop; text/x-bibtex=jabref.desktop;gedit.desktop; I observe texworks are both up and down. Should I remove one? ADDED This does not happen with all .tex files. In fact, I am currently using Ubuntu 12.04 under Virtual Box with Windows 7 host. I have my Dropbox account synced with the Windows 7 host, and I access files in Dropbox in Ubuntu through Virtual Box's shared folder functionality. (I didn't install Dropbox client in Ubuntu.) Files in Dropbox are owned by root with group vboxsf. My personal account is in the group vboxsf. It seems that I have to uncheck the option for "executable", but I have all my .tex files in the Dropbox shared folder. Would there be any workaround?

• connect to ssh server thru 80 via HTTP proxy?

  Hi, Please help: I want to connect to my ssh server at home However, I'm behind a corporate (CORP) firewall, which blocks almost all ports (443, 22, 23 etc). But it seems that 80 is not blocked, coz I am able to surf the web after I login (i.e. IE sets to CORP's proxy server, and start IE - displayed CORP intranet portal - type in google.com - dialog pops up for userid + pwd - login successful, and surf without restrictions) My ssh server listens at 443. My question is: Is there a way to connect from a computer behind the CORP firewall to the ssh server thru the 80 port, with the ssh server still listening on port 443? Changing the ssh server to listen to port 80 is not an option, coz my home ISP blocks 80. Can I use a public proxy which listens at 80? After some research on google I found that there is something called "connect to SSH thru an HTTP proxy" using the Cockscrew software. Is it useful? Or is there some other way to solve the problem?

• Script language native extensions - avoiding name collisions and cluttering others' namespace

  I have developed a small scripting language and I've just started writing the very first native library bindings. This is practically the first time I'm writing a native extension to a script language, so I've run into a conceptual issue. I'd like to write glue code for popular libraries so that they can be used from this language, and because of the design of the engine I've written, this is achieved using an array of C structs describing the function name visible by the virtual machine, along with a function pointer. Thus, a native binding is really just a global array variable, and now I must obviously give it a (preferably good) name. In C, it's idiomatic to put one's own functions in a "namespace" by prepending a custom prefix to function names, as in myscript_parse_source() or myscript_run_bytecode(). The custom name shall ideally describe the name of the library which it is part of. Here arises the confusion. Let's say I'm writing a binding for libcURL. In this case, it seems reasonable to call my extension library curl_myscript_binding, like this: MYSCRIPT_API const MyScriptExtFunc curl_myscript_lib[10]; But now this collides with the curl namespace. (I have even thought about calling it curlmyscript_lib but unfortunately, libcURL does not exclusively use the curl_ prefix -- the public APIs contain macros like CURLCODE_* and CURLOPT_*, so I assume this would clutter the namespace as well.) Another option would be to declare it as myscript_curl_lib, but that's good only as long as I'm the only one who writes bindings (since I know what I am doing with my namespace). As soon as other contributors start to add their own native bindings, they now clutter the myscript namespace. (I've done some research, and it seems that for example the Perl cURL binding follows this pattern. Not sure what I should think about that...) So how do you suggest I name my variables? Are there any general guidelines that should be followed?

• Domain changes required for SSL integration

  Currently my site supports regular payment options (User is taken to Payment Gateway/PG website). Now I'm trying to implement "seamless" PG integration. I need SSL for this. I'm having a dedicated server with 5 static IPs from Hostgator/HG. options: I take SSL for www.my_domain.com. According to HG, I need to change IP of main site as current IP is not really dedicated as it is being shared by cpanel etc. So They need to bind another dedicated IP to main domain for SSL to work. This would required DNS change for main website and hence cause few hours downtime (which is ok). I've noticed that most of the e-commerce websites are using subdomains like secure.my_domain.com for ssl/https. This sounds like a better approach. But I've got few doubts in this case: a) Would I need to re-register with existing PGs (Paypal, Google Checkout, Authorize.net) if I switch to subdomain? Re-registering is not an option for me. b) Would DNS change be required for www.my_domain.com in this case. This confusion arose because of following reply from HG : "If the sub domain secure.my_domain.com is added to an existing cPanel it will use the IP for that cPanel so as long as it is a Dedicated IP that will be fine. If secure.my_domain.com gets setup as its own cPanel it will need to be assigned to a Dedicated IP which would have a DNS change involved.". Please suggest?

• qemu/virt-manager no permisson on shared folder

  I have a strange problem. Iam trying to create a shared folder via the add-hardware-filesystem option. For Type and Modus i choose Passtrought and for Driver Path. The Source Path is /free and target is mytag. I mount it with: mount -t 9p -o trans=virtio mytag /mnt/test -oversion=9p2000.L Everything worked without problems. But when i enter /mnt/test and do a ls, i get "ls: Öffnen von Verzeichnis . nicht möglich: Keine Berechtigung" in english something like "ls: cant open folder . no permission" I set permissions of /free to 777 recursivly but nothing changed. Also tried some other modes in virt-manager but nothing changes. Do you have any clues, what i am doing wrong? The guest-os ist Ubuntu 12.04 and the host-os is Ubuntu 11.10 Thank you for your help.

• Can't get any SMART or temperature data from HDDs

  I have a PC with recently installed Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 MB. I've encountered some weird problem with getting SMART data or temperature for HDDs. Every single tool I've tried in Windows 7 just can't get any data (HDTune, AIDA64...). I was suspecting that SMART feature is disabled in BIOS but it's seems like there is no such option in BIOS settings. I've even tried to update BIOS but still no luck. Same issue with both controllers on that MB (Intel and Marvell). It seems unlikely that both controllers end up with exact same issue. Both controllers are working in AHCI mode. Is there anythig that can interfere with getting SMART ant temp data from HDDs? Or is there any way to check that it's actuall MB issue? Is it even possible that it is hardware issue since all HDDs seems to work normal despite the fact that I can't get any temperature or SMART data from it.

• How to crop black bars or zoom on Youtube and other Video websites?

  Many desktop software (VLC, MPC) and have an option to 'zoom in' , 'crop black bars', or crop to a specific aspect ratio. How can we do this in Fullscreen on Youtube or other flash Video sites? I am the viewer, NOT the video's creator/publisher. iOS Can do this (double tap to zoom, which removes black bars, zoom depth not configurable). afaik, Desktop computers (and android devices), cannot do this on the fly. The only 'workaround' I've found is F11 and zooming of the entire web page - basically a fake full screen and zooming the web page beyond the screen size. Use Case: watching 4:3 flash videos from the web on a widescreen monitor. Looking for all creative solutions, including any software that accesses YouTube without using a web browser.

• Session serialization in JavaEE environment

  Please consider the following scenario: We are working on a JavaEE project for which the scalability starts to become an issue. Up until now, we were able to scale up but this is no longer an option. Therefore we need to consider scaling out and preparing the App for a clustered environment. Our main concern right now is serializing the user sessions. Sadly, we did not consider from the beginning the issue and we are encountering the following excetion: java.io.WriteAbortedException: writing aborted; java.io.NotSerializableException: org.apache.catalina.session.StandardSessionFacade I did some research and this exception is thrown because there are objects stored on the session which does not implement the Serializable interface. Considering that all over the app there are quite a few custom objects which are stored on the session without implementing this interface, it would require a lot of tedious work and dedication to fix all these classes declaration. We will fix all this declarations but the main concern is that, in the future, there may be a developer which will add a non Serializable object on the session and break the session serialization & replication over multiple nodes. As a quick overview of the project, we are developing using a home grown framework based on Struts 1 with the Servlet 3.0 API. This means that at this point, we are using the standard session.getAttribute() and session.setAttribute() to work with the session and the session handling is scattered all over the code base. Besides updating the classes of the objects stored on session and making sure that they implement the Serializable interface, what other measures of precaution should we take in order to ensure a reliable Session replication capability on the Application layer? I know it is a little bit late to consider this but what would be the best practice in this case? Furthermore, are there any other issues we should consider regarding this transition? • Observable Adapter

  .NET 4.0 introduced a pair of interfaces, IObservable<T> and IObserver<T>, supporting subscriptions to and notifications for push-based sequences. In combination with Reactive Extensions (Rx), these interfaces provide a convenient and uniform way of describing event sources and sinks in .NET. The StreamInsight CTP refresh in November 2009 included an Observable adapter supporting “reactive” event inputs and outputs.   While we continue to believe it enables an important programming model, the Observable adapter was not included in the final (RTM) release of Microsoft StreamInsight 1.0. The release takes a dependency on .NET 3.5 but for timing reasons could not take a dependency on .NET 4.0. Shipping a separate copy of the observable interfaces in StreamInsight – as we did in the CTP refresh – was not a viable option in the RTM release.   Within the next months, we will be shipping another preview of the Observable adapter that targets .NET 4.0. We look forward to gathering your feedback on the new adapter design! We plan to include the Observable adapter implementation into the product in a future release of Microsoft StreamInsight. • esxi 5.1 - copy paste host config doesn't work?

  I followed these instructions for esxi 5.1 to enable copy paste from the host config. (search for "To enable this option for all the virtual machines in the ESX/ESXi host:") http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1026437 But copy and paste doesn't work for new VMs or existing VMs. Did I do something wrong somewhere? I've rebooted VMs and even rebooted host. I can confirm that if I do a per VM configuration, it works. Just not a central host config. Here is a screenshot of my /etc/vmware/config file

  In Web Applications, we often come across requirement of sending and receiving emails through our application. So same can be for the applications hosted on Azure. So Do you want to send email from an application hosted on Azure? CloudMail is one of the possible answers. CloudMail is designed to provide a small, effective and reliable solution for sending email from the Azure platform directly addressing several problems that application developers face. Microsoft does not provide an SMTP Gateway (yet) so the application is forced to connect directly to one hosted somewhere else, on another network. So to implement such functionality one of the possible option is using Free email providers. This might be fine for testing, but do you really want to rely on a free service in production? There can be other issues with this approach like if your chosen SMTP gateway is down or there are connection problems? Again there can be some specific requirement that, you want to send email via a company’s mail server, from inside their firewall. CloudMail solves these problems by providing a small client library that you can use in your solution to send emails from you application and a Windows Service that you run inside your companies network that acts as a relay. • Multi-Resolution Mobile Development

  I'm about to start development on my first game for mobile phone (I already have a flash prototype completed so it's jsut a matter of "porting" it to mobile and fixing up the code) and plan on hopefully being able to get the game working on iphones and most android devices. I am using Haxe along with OpenFL and HaxeFlixel for development. My question is: What resolution should I design the game in initially and/or what is the best way to develop a game for multiple resolutions. I have found multiple different methods, the best, in my opinion, being strategy 3 on this page: http://wiki.starling-framework.org/manual/multi-resolution_development. However I have some questions about this. First, what would the best base resolution to use be, the guide suggests 240*320 which seems alright to me, although if I chose to use pixel graphics as I most probably will given I'm using HaxeFlixel, I'm not sure if they'll look too blocky on larger screens which I'm not even sure is a problem as it might still look alright. (Honestly, not sure about that and if anyone has any examples of games that use this method and look nice). Finally, please feel free to share whatever methods you use and think is best. For example, HaxeFlixel has a scaling feature that scales the game to fit the exact screen size, but I'm afraid that would lead to blurry and improperly scaled graphics since it would scale by non-integers. But, I'm not sure how noticeable a problem that may or may not be. Although from experience I'm pretty sure it won't look nice and currently I do not think I'm going to go for this option. So, I would really appreciate any help on this subject. Thank you in advance.

• Ubuntu VPN Server (PPTPD) Configuration - Pass Traffic to Internet

  I am trying to configure PPTPD on my Ubuntu box to pass all VPN traffic through to it's internet connection, so I essentially want it to work like a Proxy. I think the problem is that no default gateway is being assigned to my PPTP client (Windows 7). I can connect to the VPN fine, I get an IP address and DNS servers but no default gateway. Do I need to configure a specific option to tell the VPN server to forward all traffic it receives down it's eth0 port and out to the internet. Thanks!

• My parked domain was de-indexed by Google - what to do?

  I have a question about how to handle my domain. In a nutshell, I bought a domain last year from Go Daddy. My intention was to launch a real site with this domain and I have spent the last year working on my site. For the last year, I have been using the default Go Daddy page display for an up and coming site. When I first bought this site, it was indexed by Google - you could search for "alphabanter" and my site would show up on the search result page for Google. Several months ago, it seemed Google de-indexed my domain and if you type "alphabanter," my domain no longer shows up on the list of search results. However, if you search for "www.alphabanter.com", that's the only way it shows up in the search results for Google. Anyways, I am about to launch my site for real. However, I don't quite know if I can get my site back into Google's index. I have a few questions: 1) Was my domain permanently penalized by Google and removed from their index just because it was a parked domain? I don't believe I have done anything abusive other than using the Go Daddy default page for almost a year because my site was not ready. 2) Should I just launch my site, put a few backlinks to my site, and hope that Google indexes my site again? 3) Should I submit my site to Google at Google submit your content I assume getting Google to reconsider my site is the last option if none of the above works.

• KeepLevelReg settings to eliminate sync prompts - errors occurred while Windows was synchronizing your data

  We have 2 XP pro VMs (Citrix) that both have problems with logout prompts appearing during logout. Users are closing the rdc before these appear: The Microsoft solution involves the creation of the KeepProgressLevel registry entry along with a value of 1 for "pause on errors." I have implemented this across the domain for this problem, yet these 2 VM's continue to have the prompts. Today, I experimented by changing the KeepProgressLevel option to 0. This is not one of the options given by MS, yet I stopped getting the prompts. Can anyone tell me what I've done by setting the value to 0? Have I basically turned off the feature as if the KeepProgressLevel entry is gone? If so, why no more prompts? I did notice during logoff that there is a red x and error message, yet no prompt.

• When clicking an irc:// link, a new instance of chatzilla opens instead of the existing one being used.

  That is my problem in a nutshell. I'm running Win7 32-bit. I have chatzilla on XulRunner, so not as the Firefox add-on. When I clock any irc:// link, a new instance of Chatzilla will be started. I have a lot of startup-commands set, so all those will be executed. I stop the new instance before it takes off, but this is rather annoying. Firefox application setting just link to the path where the executable is, with no option to set any command-line stuff to make the existing instance be used. Is there any firefox or windows setting that I can manipulate, so that when firefox calls chatzilla.exe, the existing instance is used instead of a new one opened?

• Access Control Service: Home Realm Discovery (HRD) Gotcha

  I really like ACS2. One feature that is very useful is home realm discovery. ACS provides a Nascar style list as well as discovery based on email addresses. You can take control of the home realm selection process yourself by downloading the JSON feed or by manually setting the home realm parameter. Plenty of options – the only option missing is turning it off… In other words, when you setup your ACS namespace and realm and register identity provider, there is no way to keep the list of identity providers secret. An interested “user” can always retrieve all registered identity provider (using the browser or download the JSON feed). This may not be an issue with web identity providers, but when you use ACS to federate with customers or business partners, you maybe don’t want to disclose that list to the public (or to other customers). This is an adoption blocker for certain situations. I hope this feature will be added soon. In addition I would also like to see a feature I call “home realm aliases”. Some random string that I can use as a whr parameter instead of using the real issuer URI.

• Force Direct3D anti-aliasing in a Direct3D game?

  Some old games look really jagged nowadays on large displays without any anti-aliasing, but don't have any option built-in to the game to enable it. On a PC with an NVIDIA graphics card, it's possible to force anti-aliasing in the NVIDIA control panel which can really improve this. But I'm playing the game in Parallels on a Mac, and although the Mac has an NVIDIA graphics card, it's Parallels' emulated card that Windows sees and so obviously there's no NVIDIA control panel. Is there some generic way I can force anti-aliasing for a Direct3D game without using the NVIDIA control panel?

  Here is the flag to enable or to disable JSSE.-Dweblogic.ssl.JSSEEnabled=true|false Oracle recommends that you keep this value set to true.  Starting WLS 12c, Even if the above option is set to false , it is ignored. The changes are neither persisted nor the Mbean value is also left unmodified.... Please also be aware of the below changes in SSL implementation in 12c version 1. Certicom has been removed from WebLogic Server 12.1.1 and is no longer supported. 2. JSSE is the only SSL implementation that is supported in WebLogic Server 12.1.1. The following configuration changes have been made to be consistent with this support: The default for JSSEEnabled has been changed to true. Oracle recommends that you keep this value set to true. If JSSEEnabled is set to false, it will be ignored. That is, the MBean value will not be changed either in memory or the persisted config.xml file. • Setting Redmine path

  Hello, How can I set the path on which Redmine should be run, e.g. example.com:3000/redmine instead of example.com:3000? There is an appropriately named option in the settings panel, but it serves a different purpose, according to the documentation and experimental observations (it is used to write URL in emails sent to users). A wider picture: I need this in order to properly serve Redmine on port 80 over Apache's mod_proxy (i.e. at example.com/redmine). The problem is that when running it on /, the home page fails to load the necessary resources (such as JavaScript and CSS files). Any workarounds?

• Compiled code spreadsheet-like cell management? (auto-updating)

  Okay so I am fully aware how spreadsheets manage cells, they build dependency graphs where when one cell changes it tells all the other cells that are dependent on it that it changed. So they can from there update. How they update I think involves either re-evaluating the formulas stored as strings, or re-evaluating the abstract syntax tree which I think is stored differently and might be faster. Something like that. What I'm looking to do is manage a few variables in my code so I don't have to update them in the correct way, which would be a nightmare. But I also want it much faster than spreadsheets. And since I'm not looking for any functionality as great as are in these spreadsheets, I just figured from that thought point that there has to be a way to have a very fast implementation of this functionality. Especially since I don't have to modify cells after compiling unless that would be an option. I'm very new to programming so I have no idea. One example might be to have a code-generator that generates code that does this for me. But I have no clue what the generated code would look like. Specifically, how exactly would variables inform others that they need to update, and what do those variables do to update? I'm looking for any kind of ideas. Programming is not my job but nonetheless I was hoping to have some kind of system like this that would greatly help me with some stuff. Of course I have been programming plenty lately so I can still program. I just don't have the full scope on things. I'm looking for any kind of ideas, thank you very much in advance! Also, please help me with the tags. I know C# and Java mainly and I'm hoping to implement this in either of those languages and I'm hoping this can stay in those tags. Forcing this into some kind of spreadsheet tag wouldn't be accurate.
