• Ur/Web new purely functional language for web programming?

  I came across the Ur/Web project during my search for web frameworks for Haskell-like languages. It looks like a very interesting project done by one person. Basically, it is a domain-specific purely functional language for web programming, taking the best of ML and Haskell. The syntax is ML, but there are type classes and monad from Haskell, and it's strictly evaluated. Server-side is compiled to native code, client to Javascript. See the slides and FAQ page for other advertised advantages. Looking at the demos and their source code, I think the project is very promising. The latest version is something 20110123, so it seems to be under active development at this time. My question: Has anybody here had any further experience with it? Are there problems/annoyances compared to Haskell, apart from ML's slightly more verbose syntax? Even if it's not well known yet, I hope more people will know of it. OMG this looks very cool to me. I don't want this project to die!!

• Why do I need to set up Autologon values in registry twice in before it works and can I fix this?

  Background: As part an automated testing suite I am building, I need to set up Autologon on my virtual machines 'on demand'. By on demand, I mean that I don't want to necessarily pre-configure my VM or any snapshot to have Autologon set up already, for security reasons and also a huge business case. My solution so far: I'm copying a script to the guest machine and then using Sysinternals PsExec to execute it. The script is: reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /f /v DefaultUserName /t REG_SZ /d myusername reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /f /v DefaultPassword /t REG_SZ /d myfakepassword reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /f /v DefaultDomainName /t REG_SZ /d mydomain reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /f /v ForceAutoLogon /t REG_SZ /d 1 reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon" /f /v AutoAdminLogon /t REG_SZ /d 1 reg add "hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\AutoLogonChecked" /f /ve /d 1 Note: I don't believe AutoLogonChecked is required for machines post Windows 2000 but I'm doing it just in case for now. The Problem: I see PsExec executes this properly and all the values are in the registry, however when I restart the machine, the user isn't automatically logged on...When I run this a second time then restart the machine, the user is finally logged on. A diff between the registry states shows that the first time I run this, it is missing both the "1" for AutoAdminLogon, and also the DefaultPassword key. The second time I execute it, these values are correctly intact as I intended. So, what is going on here? Is this expected? This post claims in the end that it really all just works (the problem was that a logoff script was setting off the values). Doesn't seem to work for me however. Note this seems unique to Windows 7, does not occur in Windows XP Also note that you don't need PsExec to recreate the issue - just modify the registry yourself EDIT/update: Login interactively and run script (so, not executing it remotely), logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when I'm interactively logged in, logging off automatically logs me back in (so, it works) remotely execute the script in guest when with non-interactive session if I log in afterwards (so, interactive now) then back off, it logs me back in (so, it then works) EDIT/update 2: This only occurs for Win7x86, Win7x64, Win8x64. This does not occur for Windows XP

  I could run Notepad++ easily but I fail to run the Angry bird exe. Whenever I open the exe, I see one of my screen flickrs a bit (as lines and not the whole screen) and nothing happens. Any ideas? • Troubleshooting inconsistent ODBC connectivity

  I'm attempting to integrate UPS WorldShip with a SQL Server 2008 R2 database but the connection is very inconsistent. UPS claims this is a DSN/Windows problem and I have not been able to convince them otherwise. The integration is quite simple: my shipping guy clicks a button which opens a form where he enters an order #. After pressing enter the shipping information will be pulled from the database for that order #. The problem is that WorldShip often times thinks the DSN does not exist. However, I am able to open WorldShip's customization tool and browse all the tables and fields in the database my DSN is connected to which means at the very least my DSN does, in fact, exist. The reason this has been so difficult to troubleshoot is because there is no consistency to the problem and I'm not able to reliably repeat any behavior. That is to say that rebooting the PC doesn't cause the connection to break and opening the integration tool and viewing the tables and fields doesn't cause the integration button to work. Is there some way for me to monitor this connection from the SQL server or get any clues as to why it fails? As requested by TallTed here is a sample of the trace file I created. After a mere 5 hours the trace file was over 130MB so there's no way I could provide it in its entirety. • VSDB to SSDT part 3 : command-line deployment with SqlPackage.exe, replacement for Vsdbcmd.exe

  For our continuous integration needs, we use a powershell script to handle deployment. A simpler approach would be to have a deployment task embedded within the build process. See the solution provided here by Jakob Ehn (a most interesting read which also dives into the '”deploying from Visual Studio” specifics) : http://geekswithblogs.net/jakob/archive/2012/04/25/deploying-ssdt-projects-with-tfs-build.aspx   For our needs, though, clearly separating our build phase from our deployment phase is important. It allows us to instantly deploy old versions. Also it is more convenient for continuous integration. So we stick with the powershell script approach. With VSDB projects, that script used to call the following command (the vsdbcmd executable was locally available, along with needed libraries): vsdbcmd.exe /a:Deploy /dd /cs:<CONNECTIONSTRING TO TARGET DB> /dsp:SQL /manifest:< PATH TO .deploymanifest FILE>   To be able to do the approximately same thing with a SSDT produced file (dacpac), you would call this command on a machine which has VS2012 installed (or the SSDT installed, see here : http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh500335%28v=vs.103%29):   C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   And from within a powershell script :   & "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\110\DAC\bin\SqlPackage.exe" /Action:Publish /SourceFile:<PATH TO Database.dacpac FILE> /Profile:<PATH TO .publish.xml FILE>   The command will consume a publish.xml file where the connection string and the deployment options are specified. • MOSS2007 tries to use ActiveDirectory when I have configured an alternative membership provider

  I've got a MOSS site that I am trying to configure using Forms authentication and absolutely any kind of membership provider whatsoever. Thus far ActiveDirectory has proved obstructively difficult so I've just whipped up a simple stub membership provider and put it in the GAC. It's a very basic and simple provider but it works fine with an ASP.Net site, I just can't make it work with Sharepoint. I've made sure I reset IIS and even restarted the server to see if either of those helped but they made no difference.

• git/gitolite: big git repo with several mini projects

  I'm pretty new to the whole version control thing, and even more so with git. I recently installed git on my computer(s) and set it up on a NAS server. However, I have several client folders with several project folders per client folder. Each one of these client folders is a giant repo, encompassing every project inside it. What I'm wondering is, is there a way to break this apart? So, for instance: The NAS is my 'origin', and has gitolite installed On computer1 I have every project folder in a client folder ever created (clean branch), In computer2 I do not a new checkout of the client branch (because all the projects in that branch are all completed and I don't need a working copy of it), but I do have a brand new project folder for that client "newproject". Is there a way to commit and push to the NAS repo from computer2? Or perhaps is there a better way of organizing all this?

  So tonight this convo happened: Intrigued, I viewed the video Lee mentions and found that its the now infamous Brent Ozar video which shows a bug in Word on the Surface RT (you can read this article which talks about the tempest in a teacup that ensued). But Lee is correct – in the video, when Brent starts up Word 2013, we see this: That sure does look like a desktop doesn’t it! But…aren’t Windows RT devices *not* supposed to come with a desktop? Actually, it does. However, it’s not a *full* desktop. From Seth Rosenblatt’s fantastic Windows RT FAQ article: Windows RT will have a Desktop mode, but it will be restricted to pre-installed, Microsoft-produced software.   The portable libraries are the  response to the growing profile fragmentation in .NET frameworks. With help of portable libraries you can share code between different runtimes without dreadful #ifdef PLATFORM statements or even worse “Add as Link” source file sharing practices. If you have an existing .net class library which you would like to reference from a different runtime (e.g. you have a .NET Framework 4.5 library which you would like to reference from a Windows Store project), you can either create a new portable class library and move the classes there or edit the existing .csproj file and change the XML directly. The following example shows how to convert a .NET Framework 4.5 library to a Portable Class Library. But sometimes I it would be good to ignore files for certain dir and I don't like idea of creating project file in that dir or remembering how I named project file in some special folder like ~/.tmproject. Is there some sort of plugin or something like this which will allow me to ignore files in dir? Perfect solution would be reading .gitignore file.

• Referencing SQL Server 2008 R2 SMO from Visual Studio 2010

  Hello. We read a number of things about referencing SQL Server SMO from Visual Studio but still don't have the definite answers we need. So, here it goes... A number of years ago we created a C# application using Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005. In that application, we added .NET references to a number of SQL Server SMO objects, and everything worked fine. Those references were: Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.Smo GAC 9.0.242.0 Microsoft.SqlServer.SqlEnum GAC 9.0.242.0 We have now migrated to Visual Studio 2010 and SQL Server 2008 R2. However, when we try to reference those same SMO objects for SQL Server 2008 R2, they don't appear in the .NET references tab. We're wanting to reference the SQL Server 2008 R2 version of those same SMO assemblies for our upgraded C# application. On our development machines, we have SQL Server 2008 R2 Developer installed with all options, including the SDK such that the assemblies are found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, my first questions are: Are we supposed to do file references to the SMO assemblies instead of .NET references in Visual Studio 2010 w/ SQL Server 2008 R2? Or, is there some problem with our development machines such that the SMO assemblies are not appearing in the .NET references tab? Next, our production machines will have SQL Server 2008 R2 Workgroup installed with the client tools option selected, thus providing those same SMO assemblies in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\SDK\Assemblies. So, the next questions are: When we release to production, are we supposed to redistribute the SMO assemblies with our application? Or, will our application work on the production servers without redistributing the SMO assemblies (since the client tools/SMO assemblies have been installed)? What else????? Thanks for the help!

• Can defect containment metrics be readily applied at an organizational level when there is only a consistant organizational process framework?

  Defect containment metrics, such as total defect containment effectiveness (TDCE) and phase containment effectiveness (PCE), can be used to give a good indicator of the quality of the process. TDCE captures the defects that are captured at some point between requirements and the release of a product into the field, indicating the overall effectiveness of the entire process to find and remove defects. PCE provides more detail at each phase of the software development life cycle and how the defect detection and removal techniques are working. Applying these metrics makes sense at a level where you have a well-defined process and methodology for product development, often a project. However, some organizations provide a process framework that is tailored at the project level. This process framework would include the necessary guidance for meeting certifications (ISO9001, CMMI), practices for incorporating known good techniques (agile methods, Lean, Six Sigma), and requirements for legal or regulatory reasons. However, the specific details of how to gather requirements, design the system, produce the software, conduct test, and release are left to the product development teams. Is there any effective way to apply defect containment metrics at an organizational level when only a process framework exists at the organizational level? If not, what might be some ideas for metrics that can be distilled from each project (each using a tailored process that fits into the organizational process framework) that captures defect containment metrics to discuss the ability of the process to find and remove defects? The end goal of such a metric would be to consolidate the defect containment practices of a large number of ongoing projects and report to management. The target audience would be people in roles such as the chief software engineer and the chief engineer (of all engineering disciplines) for the organization. Although project specific data would be available, the idea is to produce something that quantifies the general effectiveness of all tailored processes across all ongoing projects. I would suspect that this data would also be presented as part of CMMI, ISO, or similar audits to demonstrate process quality.

  I have been advise by Commvault partner support to turn off the backup of the master database as the backup failed due to the log file being lock. The following is the advise given: "The message is caused by Commvault’s inability to backup the master database’s transaction log. If this is happening intermittently its possible that something is locking the transaction log, preventing SQL iData agent from accessing the log. • How can I debug user mode driver failures in Windows 8

  I have a 32 GB SD Card. Whenever I insert this card in to my newly upgraded Windows 8 laptop the OS stops responding normally. Metro Apps won't work. The system may or may not log in. Desktop apps may or may not be able to do things. When I remove the card and restart then all is fine. As soon as I put the card back in, the system starts misbehaving again. I've run Windows Update, so I have the latest drivers from Microsoft. This does not occur with the 8 GB cards I have. Unfortunately I only have one 32 GB card, so I can't test with others. From examining the system event log I've determined this is happening due to a user mode driver failure. How can I best debug this issue from here? How can I figure out which driver this is related to? Will there be a Dr. Watson crash dump somewhere? • Is my current employer expecting too much?

  This is my first job as a programmer.I am working on ASP.NET/C#,HTML,CSS,Javascript/Jquery. I am working for a firm which develops software for small banking firms. Currently they have their software running in 100 firms.Their software is developed in Visual Fox Pro. I was hired to develop online version of this software.I am the solo developer. My boss is another developer.So my company has two developers. My boss doesnot have any idea about .NET development.I am working on their project since 8 months.The progress is surely there but not very big. I try my best to do what my boss asks.But the project just seems too ambitious for me. The company doesnot have any planning for the project.They just ask me to develop what their older software provides.So I have to deal with front end , back end,review codes , design architecture and etc. I have decided to give my best.I try a lot.But the project sometimes just seems to be overwhelming. So my questions is , is it normal for a programmer to be in this place. I always feel the need to work in atleast a small team if not big one. Are my employers just expecting too much of a fresher.Or is that I being a programmer am lacking the skills to deal with this. I am just not able judge my condition.Also I am paid very low salary.I do work on saturday as well. Can anyone just help me judge this scenario? Any suggestions are welcome.
