• How do I generate (and label) a random integer with python 3.2?

  Okay, so I'm admittedly a newbie to programming, but I can't determine how to get python v3.2 to generate a random positive integer between parameters I've given it. Just so you can understand the context, I'm trying to create a guessing-game where the user inputs parameters (say 1 to 50), and the computer generates a random number between the given numbers. The user would then have to guess the value that the computer has chosen. I've searched long and hard, but all of the solutions I can find only tell one how to get earlier versions of python to generate a random integer. As near as I can tell, v.3.2 changed how to generate and label a random integer. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

  I know that peripheral devices such as a hard driver, a floppy driver, etc are controlled by reading/writing certain control registers on their device controllers. I am wondering about the following questions: Is it true that when these peripheral devices are plugged onto the computer, the addresses(port numbers) of their control registers are thus determined by how they are attached to the address bus (i.e. the hard-wiring rules, not any soft things)? Who makes the scheme of the port number assignment? If I was given a naked computer(with no operating system and with many peripheral devices), how could I figure out the port number assignment so I can use them to control peripheral deveices. • Website Design; SEO Dilemma

  Okay so I designed a website for a restaurant and the design is aimed mostly to entice the viewer by using images of the restaurant's platters and foods. Not to say that text is totally non-existent but the design makes it hard to have enough keywords. Most keywords are found in the ALT attribute of image tags and a couple of headers. The reason as to why I am in this dilemma? I'm still new to web development and at the time I made the design, I didn't really know much about SEO. So I come here in search of help because I have an idea... Would it be good practice to have hidden SPAN blocks that would help me fill with keywords? For example a hidden SPAN would have text in bold to help with SEO. Of course, I will play it safe and not exploit this technique if it works. I have searched that this may be considered spamming by search engines and some companies are taking measures to prevent this. Thanks in advance!

• How to use files/streams as source/sink in PulseAudio

  I'm a PulseAudio noob, and I'm not sure if I'm even using the correct terminology. I've seen that PulseAudio can perform echo cancellation, but it needs a source and a sink to filter from, and a new source and sink. I can provide my mic and my audio-out as the source and sink, right? Now, here's my situation: I have two video streams, say, rtmp streams, or consider two flv files, say at any given moment, stream X is the input stream that's coming from another computer's webcam+mic and stream Y is the output stream that I'm sending, (and it's coming from my computer's webcam+mic). Question: Back to the first paragraph - here's the thing, I don't want to use my mic and my audio-out, instead, I want to use these two "input" and "output" streams as my source and sink so to speak (of course, I'll use xuggler maybe, to extract just the audio from X and Y). It may be a strange question, and I have my reasons for doing this strange this - I need to experiment and verify the results to see.

  I am a web developer that is starting to look into hosting his own website. I would like to showcase my programming skills (PHP, MySQl, C#, Wordpress). My knowledge of languages I am OK with but the actually hosting site is where my knowledge starts to get a little shaky. I know the basics (bandwidth, sub-domains, re-write rules) but I would love your input, to help me formulate a check list of certain web-hosting services that I should be on the look-out for. Also I was wondering if there were any reliable hosting providers who give you the option to host both c# code-behinds and PHP code. As I would like to have two versions of my site, one in C# and one in PHP the hope is that if I need to look for another job this website will help me show possible employers my server side knowledge. I hope this is enough info, I did some researching online but found a bunch of unless articles and I've always have had luck on the StackExchange sites. So hopefully you, can help me. Thanks alot.

  I'm running Linux E6520 3.2.0-56-generic #86-Ubuntu SMP Wed Oct 23 09:20:45 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux on a Dell Latitude E6530. (This is a new machine; have run the same version of linux on an older machine for a year, without this happening.) I've been losing sound regularly, though have not been able to isolate the trigger for this. I've scoured the web on this subject, in particular https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshootingProcedure and Audio stopped working suddenly in 12.04 Nothing from the first site seemed to work for me. From the second site, I learned enough to be able to fix the problem when it happens, but nothing on the web has helped me figure out why the problem is happening in the first place. Patching together stuff from the web, and with some blind luck, I've found that the following steps seem to restore sound pulseaudio --kill pulseaudio --start pavucontrol -> output devices Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which mutes audio Click on the "Mute audio" icon, which unmutes audio. This obviously doesn't make sense: audio wasn't muted in the first place, but somehow, magically, toggling mute audio off and on seems to reset something. Can anybody suggest from this information why sound would be disappearing in the first place (it seems as though something is getting muted at the system level, but I don't know what)? a simpler (command-line/script) way of restoring sound, in particular, is it possible to reset pavucontrol from the commandline? Some other pieces of information that may be of use: The problem is clearly happening at the system level, since I've set up a clean new user, and this user has the same problems that I do. So user fixes like deleting the .pulse directory aren't (and don't) help. Sound works fine in Windows (dual-boot) so it's not a hardware problem Any help/suggestions on this would be most appreciated.

  so I recently had my question deleted and merged into a standard how to for blank screens. I am relatively new to This type of computer work and i don't understand the steps nessary to diagnose my problem well enough to solve it so this help full how to has me feeling helpless I can use Ctrl + Alt +F1 and log in So how do I use sudo commands to fix the blank screen on my old dell? sudo lsoci -nn tells me my video card is a ATI rage 128 pro ultra tf /var/log/Xorg.0.log tells me Permission denied that is all i get Sudo apt-get install --reinstall unity tried thay also have also tried Apt-get update and upgrade Please dont close this question without providing an actual answer or if you think it is an exact duplicate provide a solution that worked for that question. You will need to configure these your self how do i do that? • When decomposing a large function, how can I avoid the complexity from the extra subfunctions?

  Say I have a large function like the following: function do_lots_of_stuff(){ { //subpart 1 ... } ... { //subpart N ... } } a common pattern is to decompose it into subfunctions function do_lots_of_stuff(){ subpart_1(...) subpart_2(...) ... subpart_N(...) } I usually find that decomposition has two main advantages: The decomposed function becomes much smaller. This can help people read it without getting lost in the details. Parameters have to be explicitly passed to the underlying subfunctions, instead of being implicitly available by just being in scope. This can help readability and modularity in some situations. However, I also find that decomposition has some disadvantages: There are no guarantees that the subfunctions "belong" to do_lots_of_stuff so there is nothing stopping someone from accidentally calling them from a wrong place. A module's complexity grows quadratically with the number of functions we add to it. (There are more possible ways for things to call each other) Therefore: Are there useful convention or coding styles that help me balance the pros and cons of function decomposition or should I just use an editor with code folding and call it a day? EDIT: This problem also applies to functional code (although in a less pressing manner). For example, in a functional setting we would have the subparts be returning values that are combined in the end and the decomposition problem of having lots of subfunctions being able to use each other is still present. We can't always assume that the problem domain will be able to be modeled on just some small simple types with just a few highly orthogonal functions.   I'm not interested in a hardware solution, I want to know about software that may "read" modulated signal received trough the power supply - some sort of a low-level driver that would access the power signal in a convenient place and demodulate it. Is there a way to receive signal from the computer's power supply? I'm interested in an API or library that would allow the computer to be seen as a node in a Power Line Communication network and receive data directly through the power cable, without the need for a converter. Is there any active research in this field? Edit: There is software that reads monitors and displays internal component voltages - DC voltage after being converted and filtered by the power supply - now I need is a method of data encoding that would be invariant to conversion and filtering, the original signal embedded in AC being present in some form within the converted DC signal.

  I am a computing science post graduate in my first job from after my degree. During my 12 month review my boss posed the question "What can we do for you in terms of progressing your career?". This got me thinking, after university I hadn't really thought about what other qualifications were available. So this is my question, what courses/qualifications should I be looking to do. Which are highly regarded and which would be really useful to complete. I've searched Google it but all I see is a jumble of courses with no idea of the credibility of each. Any help is much appreciated. I'm traditionally a systems architect, but with this job I've turned to more embedded work so Id like to edge towards electronics, embedded programming, real time OS to help with my work also it would be more likely to be accepted if it was related to my job. Finally UK based courses/ qualifications are a must as travel is probably out of the question. Help me grow as a programmer.

• Can a MAC address be used as a reliable part of a rights management (DRM) scheme?

  We're currently writing some software that we want to protect. We thought that registering a user's MAC address in a database upon activation of the software seemed viable; we can profile and grab that with a Java applet, (is there a better way?) so getting it isn't too much of a problem. However, we want their computer to only run the application, and download application files/updates from the server when their MAC address has been verified with their one on-file. We understand that this means a lockdown to one computer, but special changes can be made on request. What would be the best way to verify their MAC address, to see if it exists in the database, and then serve them the files to run the application? (And to simply run it on subsequent requests, to prevent re-downloading.)

• Touchpad issues on HP Pavilion dm4 (can't right click)

  Can anyone help me with my touchpad issues? I have a HP Pavilion dm4 and it has two areas on the bottom of the touchpad to designate right and left clicks. This mostly doesn't work on Ubuntu in the fact that it recognizes any taps on either tap zone as a left click. Instead, I have it set so if I tap anywhere on the pad it makes a left click. There should be, and there are, many ways in the mouse configuration window to simulate a right click using only a touchpad. None of these work. Changing mouse orientation doesn't do anything, "dwell click" also does nothing, and, the oddest part of this problem, whenever I try to turn "Simulated Secondary Click" off (it doesn't work anyways, but just to try to toggle it), the entire theme of my desktop changes to a gray Windows '95ey look. The only way to get rid of this is to close and reopen the mouse preferences window. My computer is fairly new and the Ubuntu installation is less than a day old. I didn't do anything that I think could cause this. The problem is that I can't right click. Help, please?s that I can't right click. Help, please? Afterword: I installed two scripts from http://sansmicrosoft.blogspot.com/2010/10/pavilion-dm4-1160-erratic-touchpad.html . They didn't do anything I couldn't already do, and they did not make it possible for me to right click. :(

• How can I restore my Acer Aspire one GNU version 1.98 to factory settings?

  Requires keyring and authentication to install and unistall programs or update anything. I just want to restart from scratch so i can clean it up anyways. Can anyone help? Also, on start up a list on a black screen will come up saying Ubuntu with linux version 26.32-40 generic or recovery version and at the bottom of different versions has one Window 7 loader option. When I get into recovery menu to try and restore to factory settings my netbook has no restore option. I've tried pressing alt-f10 and holding alt and repeatedly tap f10 but nothing seems to work, and my acer asks for a password login to even load windows 7 which I don't have. Any ideas? I've looked a lot on the internet for help but I'm getting to my last resort, to get of this thing for once and for all. I want to be able to personalize and add programs as I please, this is all bs to go through to unistall one freaking game or get rid of ubuntu gnome keyring!! Please help!! Thank you. :)

• Is it reasonable to null guard every single dereferenced pointer?

  At a new job, I've been getting flagged in code reviews for code like this: PowerManager::PowerManager(IMsgSender* msgSender) : msgSender_(msgSender) { } void PowerManager::SignalShutdown() { msgSender_->sendMsg("shutdown()"); } I'm told that last method should read: void PowerManager::SignalShutdown() { if (msgSender_) { msgSender_->sendMsg("shutdown()"); } } i.e., I must put a NULL guard around the msgSender_ variable, even though it is a private data member. It's difficult for me to restrain myself from using expletives to describe how I feel about this piece of 'wisdom'. When I ask for an explanation, I get a litany of horror stories about how some junior programmer, some-year, got confused about how a class was supposed to work and accidentally deleted a member he shouldn't have (and set it to NULL afterwards, apparently), and things blew up in the field right after a product release, and we've "learned the hard way, trust us" that it's better to just NULL check everything. To me, this feels like cargo cult programming, plain and simple. A few well-meaning colleagues are earnestly trying to help me 'get it' and see how this will help me write more robust code, but... I can't help feeling like they're the ones who don't get it. Is it reasonable for a coding standard to require that every single pointer dereferenced in a function be checked for NULL first—even private data members? (Note: To give some context, we make a consumer electronics device, not an air traffic control system or some other 'failure-equals-people-die' product.) EDIT: In the above example, the msgSender_ collaborator isn't optional. If it's ever NULL, it indicates a bug. The only reason it is passed into the constructor is so PowerManager can be tested with a mock IMsgSender subclass.

• How do I add "Press any key to boot from usb" when installing Windows from a flash drive? (Grub4dos question / how to remove a bootloader)

  Hi there! I've been struggling with this problem for a while now and finially decided to ask for help. Let me first explain what the main purpose of the app is: to provide the a very easy to use way of backing up files, after which I format the drive and start Windows 7 setup. I do this by booting WinPE, which runs a script to detect Windows installations and then opens a file browser. After the file browser is closed, the script continues and formats the drive that contains the Windows installation, and starts an unattended Windows 7 install. Now here is the problem: When you start Windows setup or WinPE from a dvd, you get a nice option to "Press any key to boot from DVD". This is to prevent the computer from booting the DVD when the first phase of the installation is complete and the computer reboots. However, when booting from a flash drive, Windows does not provide this option: it simply boots the flash drive every reboot. To replicate the "press any key" function, I installed Grub4Dos, which works great. It provides a small menu, the first standard item being "Continue installation", the second being "start installation". After quite a lot of tweaking, I got everything working: Start installation starts WinPE, which in turn starts the Windows installation. At first reboot, the Grub4Dos menu comes up, counts 5 seconds and boots the second stage of the installation. Here, I am greeted with the error: "Windows setup could not configure windows to run on this computer's hardware." When I boot into WinPE the normal way (put the bootmgr on the stick root) and change my bios to boot from the primary hdd after first reboot, I don't get this error. I've been looking around, and the only thing I could find was that the BIOS automatically names the boot device hd0, and that Windows can only be run / installed to hd 0. I'm not sure if this is the problem. I read about remapping to solve this problem, but to do that you have to know the phisical location of the hard drive and partition, like hd(0,1). I want this flash drive to work on any PC, regardless of where the OS is installed, so that's not really a possibility. A possible fix I thought of is removing the bootloader from the flash drive when I'm in WinPE. That way, when the pc reboots the BIOS will not see the flash drive as a boot drive and instead boot the primary hdd. I have yet to find a way to do this.   I've installed a vb.net windows service on a Windows 2008 machine, that is attempting to connect to SQL 2005. The service starts succesfully, but can't see the database. The event log has the following entry. The description for Event ID 0 from source SU4.ESMR.DAL.Job.FillPriorityJobByType(oJobDS, TypeID: 3 cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer. This was tested locally on both XP and 2008. All environments are 32 bit.
