• Which is generally considered faster or best practice: symlinks or Apache aliases?

  I'm curious as to what most people's views are on this subject. Personally, I will almost always prefer symlinks unless I have no other option -- I find that it is far more obvious when someone is navigating the file system, but, on the other hand aliasing is more platform independent. Windows XP, for example, doesn't have anything remotely comparable to symlinks (NTFS junctions are not interpreted correctly by at least some environments), which means that anything which relies on symlinks in a *nix based system cannot be transferred. (I know that Windows 64x OS's have symlinks, but I've not seen if they can be read correctly by the environments previously mentioned) In addition to this, I was also wondering which is considered faster. Is this even possible to know? Do you have a conjecture? I would imagine that since symlinks are generally more low-level than Apache it would make sense that they would be referenced faster, but, on the other hand, I would guess that Apache is required to do a lookup in either case so it would be disk read dependent.

• Restoring GRUB2 on Software RAID 0 after Windows 7 wiped it using LiveCD

  I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on my system. However, I need to install Windows 7 back, and I expect that it would alter GRUB and it did. Right now, my partition on my Software RAID 0 looks like this: nvidia_acajefec1 is Ubuntu 10.10 and nvidia_acajefec3 is Windows 7. I've been following some guides around and I am always stuck at GRUB not able to detect the usual RAID content. I've tried running: sudo grub > root (hd0,0) GRUB complains it couldn't find my hard disk. So I tried: find (hd0,0) And it complains that it couldn't find anything. So I tried: find /boot/grub/stage1 It said "file not found". Here's the text from the console: ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ grub Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. This may take a long time. However, ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ sudo dmraid -r /dev/sdb: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 /dev/sda: nvidia, "nvidia_acajefec", stripe, ok, 488397166 sectors, data@ 0 So what now? Do you have an idea for how to make fdisk see my RAID array on live cd (Ubuntu 10.10)? Honestly, I am lost, very lost in trying to restore GRUB2 on this software RAID 0 system right now.

  CURRENT: single domain, single Exchange 2007 NEW: two domains, single Exchange 2007 Can this be done? Details: Current setup is a single W2k3 domain with a single Exchange 2007 server. We are merging with another company that currently hosts their email with their ISP via POP3. We'd like to start hosting their email on our Exchange server using their existing domain SMTP addresses. They don't have an AD domain at all at the moment. Recommendations? Can I do this with a trust between the 2 domains? Requirements: They can't have multiple SMTP addresses on both domains...such as I've seen with articles pointing to "hosting multiple domains". I want companyA to have the same account settings they've always had...companyB to have the same SMTP address they've had and not an additional one on the current companyA Exchange domain. They should be able to collaborate (calendar, contacts, GALs) but should still be distinguishable based on which company they "work for". Please help...thanks!

• Ubuntu 11.10 and Mobility radeon HD 4570, 512MB can't find working drivers

  i'm pretty new to Linux and my new problem is ATI drivers. When i installed Ubuntu then i had black screen issue with the blinking in left upper corner, fixed it with F6 and set the "nolapic" mode, can boot only with "nolapic". Now the problem is the drivers. The suggested drivers, from the "Additional drivers" are not working. • How do I have to take into account the direction in which the camera is facing when creating a first person strafe (left/right) movement

  This is the code I am currently using, and it works great, except for the strafe always causes the camera to move along the X axis which is not relative to the direction in which the camera is actually facing. • OpenLDAP server logs filled with "TLS negotiation failure"

  I recently migrated an old OpenLDAP setup to a newer server, with a more robust certificate setup. Currently, most hosts are required to verify the cert matches the host: tls_checkpeer yes TLS_REQCERT always In the server logs, there are multiple occurences of: Nov 6 10:45:08 <servername> slapd[1773]: conn=2785646 fd=35 closed (TLS negotiation failure) These errors appear from multiple hosts, but there don't seem to be any issues actually logging into those servers with an LDAP account. Does anyone know what would cause these errors? The server is running Ubuntu 12.04.2, and OpenLDAP version 2.4.28. The cert was generated using GnuTLS.

• Can't bring NAT to work

  Hello, I bought a D-link DIR-300 wireless router and i can't bring NAT to work, i have an ssh and http service i need to forward to the internet. My connection is as follows: I have an ADSL connection, i'm using a ADSL ethernet modem connected and working, it doesnt let me put it on bridge mode. I have my router connected to my adsl modem through ethernet, it gets its ip through DHCP (and i'ts always the same) I have a desktop computer running linux with apache and openssh configured and working, it has fixed ip. I configured the NAT in the modem forwarding port 22 from the router ip to the internet. In the router i setup NAT forwarding port 22 from the desktop computer fixed ip to out there. This setup already worked with a fonera i had before, can anyone help me with this or tell me what kind of tests do i need to do? How can i test if the router is forwarding ports correctly before the modem?

• Strange FTP issues - some files are not downloaded

  I have a machine, which cannot fetch some files from remote servers by FTP. Machine is powered by CentOS. I tested FTP on three files: 12.09.2012 21:21 166 007 ll091212.002 13.09.2012 11:32 23 040 ll091212.003 13.09.2012 11:50 61 313 ll091212.004 From them, I can always successfully download only one - ll091212.004. Two others are downloaded by about 90% (I can see them on disk) and then FTP transfer hangs without any error messages. I move files, copy them about the remote server - no luck. Another machine from the same subnet can download all three of them easily. I just don't know what's the reason of this.

• Google chrome IETab login pages

  Hi, I'm using Google Chrome and for certain sites I need to use IE. I've installed IE tab classic but I've noticed then when I have pages that require an active directory popup login that chrome will prompt me for the username/password and then send switch over to IE. IE will always show a message indicating that a connection to the page could not be made and I have to then press the "Refresh the page" link and then be prompted again for the username/password (this time inside IE) and then the the login will work. Does anyone know why this happens and how I can just login once? thanks, Jeff

• DNS name not on cert

  I've got an interesting one... My users have always typed in 'mail' to get to their mail. There was an internal DNS A record that resolved that to the IP of the mail server. I'm putting in an Exchange server to replace that. In order for people to get their mail, I try putting in an A record that does the same thing as the previous one. When I try to get to OWA, it tells me that the certificate on the server is not trusted. I only have the names: mail.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.com autodiscover.mydomain.internal mydomain.internal mailserver.mydomain.internal so when the browser sees that this cert is trying to cover https://mail/owa it says the cert's not trusted. What amy I supposed to do about that?

• QuickTime X incorrect aspect ratio for H.264 video

  I'm running Snow Leopard and have a serious issue with QuickTime X. I have a Samsung HMX-H100N/XAA camcorder that records H.264 video in either 720p or 1080i. In either of these resolutions, QuickTime X (and, by extension, all QuickTime-associated applications like FCP, iMovie, etc.) displays an incorrect aspect ratio for all video produced by this camcorder. For example, 720p video is reported as being 1280x720 in the movie inspector (which is normal), but the displayed size is always at an aspect ratio of something like 63:20 (never heard of such a ratio) with sizes like 1700x539. If I open the video in QuickTime 7 player on the same computer, it is displayed correctly. If I process the video through something like MPEG Streamclip to transcode it, it displays correctly. As it stands right now I have to transcode all of my video in order to use it in any iLive (or other QT-based application) unless I want it to look ridiculous. I've tried installing Perian, but that seemed to have no effect.

• Where do I start in regards to making a Gnome/Unity Form Application

  Ok so I am familiar with developing Form and Console applications on Windows using Visual Studio .Net with C#, but where do I start when it comes to Linux distro's like Ubuntu, is there an equivalent? How would one go about matching what they can do in a Windows environment with .Net and C# in a Linux environment without .Net coding in something like Java or C/C++? I am aware of Eclipse, does eclipse have a form designer or do you have to code the design of any Gnome/Unity forms manually? Can I use eclipse to write the Linux equivalent of a console application, that you just double click on to run? I also know about Mono, but the idea is that I want to learn how to develop software without using anything in the Microsoft stack and am not sure where to start. What is the standard language/framework used to develop these types of applications on Linux? As I become more proficient with Visual Studio, C# and .Net, it has struck me that without these Microsoft tools, I am nothing. I am only capable of developing for the Microsoft OS and this scares me. This isn't some anti Microsoft thing, Microsoft makes some incredible Software/Hardware/Operating Systems/IDE's, but it is generally a bad idea to put all of your eggs in one basket so if I want to learn how to develop Terminal and Gnome/Unity form applications where in the world do I start? I have used Linux on and off for years, but Windows has been my primary OS. However I have watched Linux get better and better and as much as I love Windows 7, I am dubious about Windows 8 (I for one will sorely miss my start menu)! Obviously MS aren't going anywhere anytime soon and I could spend the the next couple of decades developing for .Net without any issues but just because you can get away with something doesn't always mean it's a good idea. • Multicast in private LAN with different subnets

  after i read Multicast IP Addresses and Multicast accross the subnets I am confused. Configuration: I have two devices in the same network. They may not be in the same Subnet, but always in the same physical network (beyond the same router, switch etc.) I want to communicate across IP multicast either 224.x.x.x or 239.x.x.x may be more fitting because we want it local, not beyond of forward through the router. Can one machine be the receiver and the other machine sender of the same multicast address? and can the receiving machine send an answer to the sending machine?

• Windows Hosted Network Redirect to IIS

  I would like to setup a Windows 7 machine as a wifi hotspot that always redirects to the IIS web hosting on the same machine. I have the hotspot piece working with the built in hosted network of Widnows 7. The webhosting was easy enough with IIS. Now, how do I connect the 2? The idea is to have a standalone device that users will be able to connect to the wifi and any webpage they go to will redirect to the internal webpage. I only expect 1 or 2 users at a time and there won't be any internet access involved.

• What is the easiest way to get MySQL's Archive Storage Engine working on CentOS 5.4

  The Archive Storage Engine is not enabled by the default build of MySQL in CentOS/RHEL. I would like to enable it on our CentOS 5.4 server. My initial reaction was to modify the SPEC file for the SRPMS file, but this indicates that this might not be that easy. There's always the option to build from MySQL source, but I would prefer if possible to stay within the RPMS/Yum world. Does anybody have a successful approach to this by using RPMS/SRPMS/Yum? Some patches which makes this work flawless with SRPMS?

  I've used Daemontools to provide a simple and reliable way to supervise Unix services on my servers. It works well, but it requires a different way of thinking (The DJB Way) and some common complaints are: TAI64N based timestamps Doesn't store scripts under /etc/init.d (or (/usr/local)/etc/rc.d) Doesn't always work with scripts like apachectl. Some scripts need to be rewritten. I remember that some similar "supervisor/watchdog" daemons were in the works about two years ago, but some were still a little rough around the edges. If you have switched from Daemontools to something else, what did you choose and did it work well for you? Does RedHat or Ubuntu come with any process supervisor utilities by default?

My situation: As a programmer myself in one company i use all my knowledge, 20++ hours a day (office , home, office, home) because every-time its challenge/complex/stress/over-time feature-requests, at the end of the year in Europe i was getting in total not even the lowest amount shown here (UK pound vs Euro + high-tech most of the time they use + speed in development): http://www.itjobswatch.co.uk/ In one company i have to use my best performance knowledge for whole year with: C, Java, PHP (Zend Framework, Cakephp), BASH, MySQL/DB2, Linux/Unix, Javascript, Dojo, JQuery, Css, Html, Xml.   I'm in the stage of planning new CMS. Before I used WordPress and other open source CMS for my clients, but I always had to write new modules and even mess with the code in order to do certain things. Which as you understand is not the best thing to do. So I finally decided to make my own CMS to work with, the way I need. But before I start it, I would like to think it trough carefully to ensure that I won't need to rewrite it ground up, just because I forgot to include some feature into architecture or did it wrong. I would like to hear your thoughs and the most important I would like you to suggest me some articles or books on that subject, especially on architecture of such systems. I googled a few good books, but that is not enough. The way I'm planning to do it: PHP5, completely OOP, modules architecture. You make a page and add any modules you need there, but modules are not global, but local to a page so you can make two pages with the same module, but content will be different if you set different "content ID" for these two entities. But it can be set the same, so two pages has the same content of the modules put there. Also I plan to support online storage web service (like amazon S3) for images and files, so I would like to hear your thoughs on it too. Also I have not yet decided how to store language data. I don't want to use DB for that, but I haven't decided yet. Also I think I will support other DB with global DB class and separate DB wrappers for MySQL and other databases. And, well, I would appreciate any other information you can provide for that subject.

• Permanent death in a MUD (think command line MMORPG)

  I have considered writing a MUD for years, and I have a lot of ideas my friends think are really cool (and that's how I'd hope to get anywhere -- word of mouth). Thing is, there's one thing I have always wanted, that my friends and strangers hated: permanent death. Now, the emotional response I get to this is visceral revulsion, every time. I'm pretty sure I am the only person that wants this, or if I'm not, I'm a tiny minority. Now, the reason I want it is because I want the actions of the players to matter. Unlike a lot of other MUDs, which have a set of static city-states and social institutions etc, I want the things my players do, should I get any, to actually change the situation. And that includes killing people. If you kill someone, you didn't send them to time out, you killed them. What happens when you kill people? They go away. They don't come back in half an hour to smack talk you some more. They're gone. Forever. By making death non-permanent, you make death not matter. It would be similar if a climax to a character's arc is getting a speeding ticket. It cheapens it. Non-permanent death cheapens death. How can I: 1) Convince my players (and random people!) that this is actually a good idea?, or 2) Find some other way to make death and violence matter as much as it does in real life (except within the game, of course) sans character deletion? What alternatives are there out there?

  In trusty 14.04 containers fail to autoboot despite all settings being set as 14.04 requires. They show all as STOPPED I have correctly configured 2 LXC containers: calypso encelado They run perfectly if I run sudo lxc-autostart then sudo lxc-ls --fancy results in: ubuntu@saturn:/etc/init$ sudo lxc-ls --fancy NAME STATE IPV4 IPV6 AUTOSTART calypso RUNNING 192.168.1.161 - YES encelado RUNNING 192.168.1.162 - YES The problem is trying to run them at boot. • VMware Workstation on Linux: Dropping core files in a shared folder...

  I'm using VMware 6.0.2 on a RHEL 4.6 host. The VMs are MontaVista CGE 5.0 (2.6.21 kernel). I'm trying to get applications running in the VMs to drop any core files on a HGFS volume, i.e. in a "shared folder". The core files get created as per the path and format given in /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern, but they are always zero length. If I change the path to a local path (on a virtual disk in the VM), all is well. Any ideas what I have to do get the core files written into a shared folder? Thanks for your help!

• Ubuntu 11.10 power management does not recognize removal of power supply!

  I have a Lenovo Ideapad Z370 with Ubuntu 11.10 and the battery status indicator shows wrong information. Problem: The indicator always shows that the power supply is connected, even if it's not connected. The battery charges and discharges normally. However, the status information is wrong. When charging, the "time to charge" decreases, and when discharging the "time to charge" increases. If the power supply is connected the power statistics show: "Supply Yes" "Online Yes" If it is not connected it shows: "Supply Yes" "Online No" My trials: I tried reinstalling the indicator applet, but that doesn't help. Searching for solutions or similar problems didn't point out any help. Background: The problem occured after I switched the battery mode in Windows. (I use a dual boot system.) Lenovo drivers allow a "battery runtime mode" for maximum runtime and a "battery health mode" for maximum battery lifetime. I initially used the runtime mode, tried the health mode for some time, but switched back to the runtime mode. The problem occured after switching to health mode. Does anyone have an idea what is wrong? The problem is relevant for me as I get no information when battery status low and the computer runs out of energy without shutdown or hibernation. This is really a problem for me!

• Outlook 2010 + Move IMAP PST file = Outlook data file cannot be accessed.

  I set up a new IMAP account in Outlook 2010. It works but creates IMAP PST file in C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook. I want the file on my data drive in D:\Users\User\Documents\Outlook Files (the same folder where outlook automatically creates the local Outlook PST. I followed the instructions here to move the IMAP PST. Testing the account (send/receive) works fine, but if I try to manually send an email I get error 0x8004010F Outlook data file cannot be accessed. I've tried repairing the PST using SCANPST (it always finds errors), and deleting and recreating the account but I get the same error. If I move the PST file back, it works again, but this is not ideal. Note: I don't think this is a duplicate of this question as the cause is different and the solution does not help.
