  • What's the best practice for taking MySQL dump, encrypting it and then pushing to s3?

    This current project requires that the DB be dumped, encrypted and pushed to s3. I'm wondering what might be some "best practices" for such a task. As of now I'm using a pretty straight ahead method but would like to have some better ideas where security is concerned.   • Postfix/SMTPD Relay Access Denied when sending outside the network

I decided to post a new question so that I can ... a) Post updated info b) post my most current postconf -n output When a user sends mail from inside the network (via webmail) to email addresses both inside and outside the network, the email is delivered. When a user with an email account on the system sends mail from outside the network, using the server as the relay, to addresses inside the network, the email is delivered.   • Windows Azure Evolution - Web Sites (aka Antares) Part 1

    This is the 3rd post of my Windows Azure Evolution series, focus on the new features and enhancement which was alone with the Windows Azure Platform Upgrade June 2012, announced at the MEET Windows Azure event on 7th June. In the first post I introduced the new preview developer portal and how to works for the existing features such as cloud services, storages and SQL databases. In the second one I talked about the Windows Azure .NET SDK 1.7 on the latest Visual Studio 2012 RC on Windows 8. From this one I will begin to introduce some new features. Now let’s have a look on the first one of them, Windows Azure Web Sites.   Overview Windows Azure Web Sites (WAWS), as known as Antares, was a new feature still in preview stage in this upgrade. It allows people to quickly and easily deploy websites to a highly scalable cloud environment, uses the languages and open source apps of the choice then deploy such as FTP, Git and TFS. It also can be integrated with Windows Azure services like SQL Database, Caching, CDN and Storage easily. After read its introduction we may have a question: since we can deploy a website from both cloud service web role and web site, what’s the different between them? So, let’s have a quick compare.   CLOUD SERVICE WEB SITE OS Windows Server Windows Server Virtualization Windows Azure Virtual Machine Windows Azure Virtual Machine Host IIS IIS Platform ASP.NET WebForm, ASP.NET MVC, WCF ASP.NET WebForm, ASP.NET MVC, PHP Language C#, VB.NET C#, VB.NET, PHP Database SQL Database SQL Database, MySQL Architecture Multi layered, background worker, message queuing, etc.. Simple website with backend database. VS Project Windows Azure Cloud Service ASP.NET Web Form, ASP.NET MVC, etc.. Out-of-box Gallery (none) Drupal, DotNetNuke, WordPress, etc.. Deployment Package upload, Visual Studio publish FTP, Git, TFS, WebMatrix Compute Mode Dedicate VM Shared Across VMs, Dedicate VM Scale Scale up, scale out Scale up, scale out As you can see, there are many difference between the cloud service and web site, but the main point is that, the cloud service focus on those complex architecture web application. For example, if you want to build a website with frontend layer, middle business layer and data access layer, with some background worker process connected through the message queue, then you should better use cloud service, since it provides full control of your code and application. But if you just want to build a personal blog or a  business portal, then you can use the web site. Since the web site have many galleries, you can create them even without any coding and configuration. David Pallmann have an awesome figure explains the benefits between the could service, web site and virtual machine.   Create a Personal Blog in Web Site from Gallery As I mentioned above, one of the big feature in WAWS is to build a website from an existing gallery, which means we don’t need to coding and configure. What we need to do is open the windows azure developer portal and click the NEW button, select WEB SITE and FROM GALLERY. In the popping up windows there are many websites we can choose to use. For example, for personal blog there are Orchard CMS, WordPress; for CMS there are DotNetNuke, Drupal 7, mojoPortal. Let’s select WordPress and click the next button. The next step is to configure the web site. We will need to specify the DNS name and select the subscription and region. Since the WordPress uses MySQL as its backend database, we also need to create a MySQL database as well. Windows Azure Web Sites utilize ClearDB to host the MySQL databases. You cannot create a MySQL database directly from SQL Databases section. Finally, since we selected to create a new MySQL database we need to specify the database name and region in the last step. Also we need to accept the ClearDB’s terms as well. Then windows azure platform will download the WordPress codes and deploy the MySQL database and website. Then it will be ready to use. Select the website and click the BROWSE button, the WordPress administration page will be shown. After configured the WordPress here is my personal web blog on the cloud. It took me no more than 10 minutes to establish without any coding.   Monitor, Configure, Scale and Linked Resources Let’s click into the website I had just created in the portal and have a look on what we can do. In the website details page where are five sections. - Dashboard The overall information about this website, such as the basic usage status, public URL, compute mode, FTP address, subscription and links that we can specify the deployment credentials, TFS and Git publish setting, etc.. - Monitor Some status information such as the CPU usage, memory usage etc., errors, etc.. We can add more metrics by clicking the ADD METRICS button and the bottom as well. - Configure Here we can set the configurations of our website such as the .NET and PHP runtime version, diagnostics settings, application settings and the IIS default documents. - Scale This is something interesting. In WAWS there are two compute mode or called web site mode. One is “shared”, which means our website will be shared with other web sites in a group of windows azure virtual machines. Each web site have its own process (w3wp.exe) with some sandbox technology to isolate from others. When we need to scaling-out our web site in shared mode, we actually increased the working process count. Hence in shared mode we cannot specify the virtual machine size since they are shared across all web sites. This is a little bit different than the scaling mode of the cloud service (hosted service web role and worker role). The other mode called “dedicate”, which means our web site will use the whole windows azure virtual machine. This is the same hosting behavior as cloud service web role. In web role it will be deployed on the virtual machines we specified and all of them are only used by us. In web sites dedicate mode, it’s the same. In this mode when we scaling-out our web site we will use more virtual machines, and each of them will only host our own website. And we can specify the virtual machine size in this mode. In the developer portal we can select which mode we are using from the scale section. In shared mode we can only specify the instance count, but in dedicate mode we can specify the instance size as well as the instance count. - Linked Resource The MySQL database created alone with the creation of our WordPress web site is a linked resource. We can add more linked resources in this section.   Pricing For the web site itself, since this feature is in preview period if you are using shared mode, then you will get free up to 10 web sites. But if you are using dedicate mode, the price would be the virtual machines you are using. For example, if you are using dedicate and configured two middle size virtual machines then you will pay $230.40 per month. If there is SQL Database linked to your web site then they will be charged separately based on the Pay-As-You-Go price. For example a 1GB web edition database costs $9.99 per month. And the bandwidth will be charged as well. For example 10GB outbound data transfer costs $1.20 per month. For more information about the pricing please have a look at the windows azure pricing page.   Summary Windows Azure Web Sites gives us easier and quicker way to create, develop and deploy website to window azure platform. Comparing with the cloud service web role, the WAWS have many out-of-box gallery we can use directly. So if you just want to build a blog, CMS or business portal you don’t need to learn ASP.NET, you don’t need to learn how to configure DotNetNuke, you don’t need to learn how to prepare PHP and MySQL. By using WAWS gallery you can establish a website within 10 minutes without any lines of code. But in some cases we do need to code by ourselves. We may need to tweak the layout of our pages, or we may have a traditional ASP.NET or PHP web application which needed to migrated to the cloud. Besides the gallery WAWS also provides many features to download, upload code. It also provides the feature to integrate with some version control services such as TFS and Git. And it also provides the deploy approaches through FTP and Web Deploy. Today, I wanted to perform hardware-maintenance on the secondary node (node04), so I stopped the heartbeat service before shutting it down. What just happened here??? Heartbeat on node04 stopped and told node03, which was the active node at the time. Somehow, node03 decided to start the cluster processes that were already running. (For the processes that are not critical, I always return a 0 from the startupscript so it does not stops the entire cluster when a non-essential part fails.) When starting ActiveMQ, it returns status 1 because it is already running. This fails the node and shuts everything down. As heartbeat is not running on the secondary node, it cannot failover to there. When I tried to run ha_takeover to restart the resources, absolutely nothing happened. Only after I restarted heartbeat on the primary node the resources could be started (after a delay of 2 minutes). These are my questions: Why does heartbeat on the primary node try to start the cluster processes again? Why did ha_takeover not work? What can I do to prevent this from happening?   • Problem using Hibernate-Search

    Hi, I am using hibernate search for my application. It is well configured and running perfectly till some time back, when it stopped working suddenly. The reason according to me being the number of my model (bean) classes. I have some 90 classes, which I add to my configuration, while building my Hibernate Configuration. When, I disable hibernate search (remove the search annotations and use Configuration instead of AnnotationsConfiguration), I try to start my application, it Works fine. But,the same app when I enable search, it just hangs up. I tried debugging and found the exact place where it hangs. After adding all the class to my AnnotationsConfiguration object, when I say cfg.buildSessionfactory(), It never comes out of that statement. (I have waited for hours!!!) Also when I decrease the number of my model classes (like say to half i.e. 50) it comes out of that statement and the application works fine.. Can Someone tell why is this happening?? My versions of hibernate are: hibernate-core-3.3.1.GA.jar hibernate-annotations-3.4.0.GA.jar hibernate-commons-annotations-3.1.0.GA.jar hibernate-search-3.1.0.GA.jar Also if need to avoid using AnnotationsConfiguration, I read that I need to configure the search event listeners explicitly.. can anyone list all the neccessary listeners and their respective classes?   • MEB Support to NetBackup MMS

    In MySQL Enterprise Backup 3.6, new option was introduced to support backup to tapes via SBT interface. SBT stands for System Backup to Tape, an Oracle API that helps to perform backup and restore jobs via media management software such as Oracle's Secure Backup (OSB). There are other storage managers like IBM's Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) and Symantec's Netbackup (NB) which are also supported by MEB but we don't guarantee that it will function as expected for every release. MEB supports SBT API version 2.0 In this blog, I am primarily going to focus the interface of MEB and Symantec's NB. If we are using tapes for backup, ensure that tape library and tape drives are compatible. Test Setup 1. Install NB 7.5 master and media servers in Linux OS. ( NB 7.1 can also be used but for testing purpose I used NB 7.5)2. Install MEB 3.8 also in Linux OS.3. Install NB admin console in your windows desktop and configure the NB master server from there. Note: Ensure that you have root user permission to install NetBackup. Configuration Steps for MEB and NB Once MEB and NB are installed, Ensure that NB is linked to MEB by specifying the library /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/libobk.so64 in the mysqlbackup command line using --sbt-lib-path. Configure the NB master server from windows console. That is configure the storage units by specifying the Storage unit name, Disk type, Media Server name etc.  Create NetBackup policies that are user selectable. But please make sure that policy type is "Oracle".  Define the clients where MEB will be executed. Some times this will be different host where MEB is run or some times in same Media server where NB and tapes are attached. Now once the installation and configuration steps are performed for MEB and NB, the next part is the actual execution.MEB should be run as single file backup using --backup-image option with prefix sbt:(it is a tag which tells MEB that it should stream the backup image through the SBT interface) which is sent to NB client via SBT interface . The resulting backup image is stored where NB stores the images that it backs up. The following diagram shows how MEB interacts with MMS through SBT interface.     The following is an excerpt from the UniversalThread conference coverage of the German Visual FoxPro Developer Conference 2003 written by Hans-Otto Lochmann and Armin Neudert. Track: Visual FoxPro and Linux This track consists of 4 sessions presented on one day in one sequence. Originally the Linux portion of this track was to be presented by Whil Hentzen, the well-known publisher, book author and confer-ence speaker. Unfortunately some illness prevented him from joining this DevCon. Rainer got the bad news only on early Friday morning. It was definitely to late to find a replacement among the already invited speaker on such a short notice. So Rainer decided to take over these "three sessions in a row" by himself with "a little help from his friends". He hired a coach for him for the weekend and prepared slides and sessions by himself - the originally planed slides and session material were still in USA. Rainer survived barely an endless disaster of C0000005's due to various wrong configuration settings... At the presentation Jochen Kirstätter helped massively with technical details regarding Linux whereas Rainer did the slides and the presentation. Gerold Lübben then presented the MySQL part - as originally planned. This track concentrated on the how to run Visual FoxPro applications on Linux machines with the help of a Windows emulator like Wine. As more and more people use Linux machines in production (and not just for running servers), more and more invitations to bid for a development job includes the requirement to run the application in a Linux environment. If you would like to participate in such submissions, then you should get familiar with the open source operating system Linux and the open source Data Base system MySQL. [...] These sessions provided a broad, complete overview of where Linux fits into the current computing landscape from the perspective of a VFP developer, where VFP can be used with Linux, and a conceptual plan for how to approach the incorporation of Linux into your day-to-day work. In order for you to be able to work with a Linux back end, you're going to need to know something about how Linux works. The best way involves a two-step process: First, plunk down a Linux workstation on your desk next to your Windows machine and develop some experience with the new OS.Second, once you have a basic level of comfort with Linux, gained through your experience on a workstation, leverage that knowledge and learn to connect to a Linux server from your Windows machine. This track showed both of these processes: What you can expect when you set up your Linux work-station, how to set it up, how to connect to your Windows network, how to fit VFP into the mix, and even how you could use it to replace your Windows workstation in some cases. Also this track demonstrated how to connect to an existing Linux server, running MySQL or an another back end, and how to get your VFP apps talking to that back end data. This track also showed both of the positions you can take. Rainer disliked it wholeheartedly (the bad guy position in these talks) and Jochen loved it (the good guy and "typical Linux techie"-position we all love). These opposite position lasted for three sessions and both sides where shown with their Pros and Cons in live and lively discussions of the speakers (club banging was forbidden). Gerold Luebben showed how Visual Foxpro and MySQL can work together. MySQL is as one the most well known open SOURCE databases for nearly all platforms available.     Hi- I'm attempting to get my first "hello world" rails example going using the rails' getting started guide on my OSX 10.6.3 box. When I go to execute the first rake db:create command (I'm using mysql) I get: simon@/Users/simon/source/rails/blog/config: rake db:create (in /Users/simon/source/rails/blog) Couldn't create database for {"reconnect"=>false, "encoding"=>"utf8", "username"=>"root", "adapter"=>"mysql", "database"=>"blog_development", "pool"=>5, "password"=>nil, "socket"=>"/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock"}, charset: utf8, collation: utf8_unicode_ci (if you set the charset manually, make sure you have a matching collation) I found plenty of stackoverflow questions addressing this problem with the following advice: Verify that user and password are correct (I'm running w/ no password for root on my dev box) Verify that the socket is correct - I can cat the socket, so I assume it's correct Verify that the user can create a DB (As you can see root can connect and create a this DB no problem) simon@/Users/simon/source/rails/blog/config: mysql -uroot -hlocalhost Welcome to the MySQL monitor.   • Two different assembly versions "The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assem

    I have a project that I am working on that requires the use of the Mysql Connector for NHibernate, (Mysql.Data.dll). I also want to reference another project (Migrator.NET) in the same project. The problem is even though Migrator.NET is built with the reference to MySql.Data with specific version = false, it still tries to reference the older version of MySql.Data that the library was built with instead of just using the version that is there.. and I get the exception listed in the title: ---- System.IO.FileLoadException : Could not load file or assembly 'MySql.Data, Version=1.0.10.1, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=c5687fc88969c44d' or one of its dependencies. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) The version I am referencing in the main assembly is 6.1.3.0. How do I get the two assemblies to cooperate?     I cannot find back a library that allowed to format log output statements in a much nicer way than what is usually seen. One of the feature I remember is that it could 'offset' the log message depending on the 'nestedness' of where the log statement was occuring. But I remember seeing such cleanly formatted log output and they were really much nicer than anything I had seen before and, in addition to being just plain nicer, they were also easier to read for they reproduced some of the logical organization of the code. Yet I cannot find anymore what that library was. I'm pretty sure it was fully compatible with log4j or sl4j.

    Hi, I have a set of models which correspond to tables in my database. I have been retrieving them easily enough, for example. $result = $mysqli->query('SOME SQL'); $post = $result->fetch_object; What would be the best approach for performing a join and also returning the related objects? For example, each post is created by a user, so for each row returned in the joined statement, both a page and user object should be returned. Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

  • Is is better to store serialized data or raw html in mysql?

    I de-normalized my database, since the application was crawling otherwise, and Im storing a list of categories for each item in the DB as a raw html version, and simply echoing it out in my design. Each category is actually a link, which is include a tag. Naturally, this is abit of a pain, especially if I want to change the look of how the category links are displayed, since I gotta update all the old cached entries. What if I were to store this data as a serialized array instead, and simply unserialize it, and then apply formatting to it in php. Would there be a significant performance decrease over simply echoing out the raw html?

Now I created my own XML/RSS feed so that I can add additional XML tags and values. Now here's my big problem: enabling search. Since I'm not relying on Picasa's API anymore to return custom RSS/XML for the user's search, how can I create xml from another xml based on the user's search queries using only JavaScript and Jquery?
