  • same flash file (.swf) downloaded multiple times on a page

    I have a page that has a table with each row corresponding to an audio file. The last cell in each row embeds a simple flash audio player. The problem is that the flash file for the player is being downloaded for each row separately and as soon as rows go beyond 40-50 it crashes the browser. I tried using different players (1pixelout, flash-mp3-player) and the problem is still there, so its not a player specific issue. Is there any way to cache the player so that it is only downloaded once?

    Hi, I was working on an application that streams live video using Flash client and Wowza media server. As of now, I use an independent desktop based encoder(Flash Media Live Encoder) to publish my live stream. I wanted to know if it is possible to do the encoding part in the browser? My application would be a used by many to publish their streams so I cannot ask everyone to use FMLE to publish. I was wondering how do the other web based video chat applications do the encoding part over the web. Please help. Thanks

  • How to limit number of displayed items in html.dropdownlist?

    I have a html.dropdownlist on my webpage as follows: <%=Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown"})%> I am populating the dropdown with ~80 items. The issue is that when I click the dropdown the list of items is rendered from the top of the screen to the bottom of the screen. How can I set up the dropdownlist so that it only displays a maximum of 20 items when the dropdown menu is clicked (i.e. user needs to scroll down to see items 21 - 80)? I was anticipating (!) that there would be a html.dropdownlist property to control the number of displayed items that would allow something like the following e.g.: <% =Html.DropDownList("MyDropDown", Model.Data, new { @class = "dropdown", rows ="20"}) %> From research I have been doing on the msdn website it appears that there is no such property and that each browser has its own rules of how many items are displayed in a dropdownlist (?). I am using IE6 and IE7.

  • Having issues when trying to insert an ajax response which is an html block into an element on IE 8

    Hello Everyone just like my title states, I am having issues with IE8 and innerHTML. For whatever reason, when I make an ajax call which returns an html block and try to insert it into an element using innerHTML, the browser gives me an error "Unknown Error Code: 0". The interesting part of this is that, if the message response does not have html element, innerHTML works. My code is like so: setTimeout(function() { element.innerHTML = context.response.message; }, 1000).bind(context) WORKS: context.response.message = 'String'; Does not WORK: context.response.message = '<p>String</p>';

    I'm using the following code to create an image element, load it, then append it to the article on load. $('<img />') .attr('src', 'image.png') //actually imageData[0].url .load(function(){ $('article').append( $(this) ); alert('image added'); }); The alert is firing off ok, but the image doesn't appear, and when I inspect the element it has been added without the closing slash <img src='image.png' > Why is the browser removing the forward slash and how do I stop it?

  • Can you suggest good ways of generating URLS for viewing tagged content

    For example, here on stack overflow the URL http://stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/javascript+php will give you all questions tagged with javascript and php. The system I have allows tags with spaces in them, so the approach used here would not be a good fit for me. What character would you use to separate the tags, so the URLs are still human readable, google readable and web browser compatible. My gut feeling was to use commas. eg http://example.com/tagged/first+tag,second+tag Any feedback or suggestions would be welcome.

    I am trying to setup IIS on my laptop. I have followed a guide which said to go to: Control Panel Programs Turn Windows Features On / Off Click on IIS. I have done this and my computer now says that IIS is running. However when I visit http://localhost in my browser I get a 'Page Cannot be Displayed' error.     With so many languages and frameworks that exist, and with new ones appearing all the time, I don't have the time to download, install, and configure each one to evaluate it. In the past I've run across webapps that allow one to write or paste code into a window, and see the results in realtime in the browser, usually in a tutorial setting. What are your favorite sandbox sites for a given technology? Edit: @fretj provided the link to the excellent Google Code Playground (+1 upvote), but I thought that it was just for experimenting with Google's own apps (Search, Maps, Earth, Language, etc). But it turns out that it contains a few hidden gems: In addition to their apps, you can try out the many Javascript libraries that they host including jQuery, jQuery UI, MooTools, Dojo, and Prototype Scriptaculous. They're all hidden under the Libraries category in the "Pick an API" box. I overlooked the category because I thought it was for an app called Google Libraries. There's also a Javascript category for Javascript itself.

    Normally in a web app i would put a font-family in the CSS something like this " font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, Geneva, sans-serif;" This way i cover my bases as to whether the target browser can handle the various fonts and will fail gracefully if it is missing some. However that are only a limited number of fonts on the iphone and presumably if you only specify one, say Helvetica, the iPhone will always have that font and use it. So i don't really need a font-family. Do I?

    I've been googling around and I still can't get it. Some people say: here you go, just use it. Others claim it has certain restrictions that does not allow you to use p2p the way you want it in Flash. So, here's a simple question: is it possible to implement a Flash10 application, that uses some of the existing torrent files to stream video/audio right into the user's browser? If no - why? Is there any possible workaround for this 'no'? If yes - what are the difficulties of the implementation and why have no one actually done it yet?

    Hi there, I would like to know some opinions from experienced developers on what they think the definitive way to size fonts (in a base sense). I know that working with ems is considered best but im referring to the best way to set the base font size. There is the technique of setting font to 10px using 62.5 method but i think ie has an issue with rounding which throws this out slightly (perhaps not) YUI framework uses body { font:13px/1.231 arial,helvetica,clean,sans-serif; /* for IE6/7 */ *font-size:small; /* for IE Quirks Mode */ *font:x-small; } which really confuses me! Tripoli uses html { font-size:125%; } body { font-size:50%; } a list apart suggest something along the lines of : body { font-size: 16px; *font-size: 100%; } So which is the best either out of these methods or any alternatives. The best being the easiest to work with and the most reliable cross browser.

  • jquery $(window).width() and $(window).height() return different values when viewport has not been r

    I am writing a site using jquery that repeatedly repeatedly calls $(window).width() and $(window).height() to position and size elements based on the viewport size... In troubleshooting I discovered that I am getting slightly different viewport size reports in repeated calls to the above jquery functions when the viewport is not resized... Wondering if there is any special case anyone knows of when this happens, or if this is just the way it is. The difference in sizes reported are 20px or less, it appears. It happens in Safari 4.0.4, Firefox 3.6.2 and Chrome 5.0.342.7 beta on Mac OS X 10.6.2... I didn't test other browsers yet because it doesn't appear to be specific to the browser. I was also unable to figure out what the difference depends upon - if it isn't the viewport size, could there be another factor that makes the results differ? Any insight would be appreciated...     Still on the WCF learning curve: I've set up a self-hosted WCF Service (WSDualHttpBinding), which works fine on my own computer, which resides behind a firewall. If I run the client on my own computer, everything works great. Now I installed the client on a computer outside my network, and I'm trying to access the service via a dynamic DNS, like so: http://mydomain.dyndns.org:8000/MyService. My port forwarding issues were taken care of in a previous question; I can now see the service is up in my browser. But now when I try to run the client on the other machine, I get the following error message: "The open operation did not complete within the allotted timeout of 00:01:00. The time allotted to this operation may have been a portion of a longer timeout." I have disabled security on the service, so that's not it. What else might be preventing the connection from happening?

    Hi, I have a problem with a client, who cannot log in to our system. We have PHP-based B2B system, which uses cookies to store session-id. The client cannot log in and is redirected to the login page, without any error message. He claims he have cookies enabled in his Firefox. Also, if he had cookies disabled, my javascript would detect this and would show him an red, very descriptive error info. He does not seen anything like this. What else could have same effect on sessions like disabled cookies in browser? Are there any proxies which filters cookies? Any AV software, etc? What to look for? Our login form works for any other user without problems.

    Hi, I'm trying to create a PHP based game where you have to do all sorts of simple but un-obvious tasks in order to progress to the next level (eg. refresh browser, press keyboard combination, ...) Kinda like the game "this is the only level" (if anyone has ever heard of it) Now I was thinking: Would it be possible to create a level where they'd have to sign up at a different page in order to progress to the next level? So say for example they need to sign up to goal.com and if they're signed up they proceed to the next level. The page would need to constantly check if the signup process on the other site is completed. Is this even possbible? And if so, any thoughts on how? Thanks!

    I am wondering if it is possible, and if so how, one could create a perl script that constantly monitors a file/db, and then call a subroutine to perform text processing if the file is changed. I'm pretty sure this would be possible using sockets, but this needs to be used for a webchat application on a site running on a shared host, and I'm not so sure sockets would be allowed on it. The basic idea is: create a listener for a chat file/database when the file is updated with a new message, call a subroutine the called subroutine will send the new message back to the browser to be displayed Thanks in advance.

    I'm pretty accustomed to clearing my floats by using <br style="clear:both"/> but stuff keeps on changing and I am not sure if this is the best practice. There is a CSS hack (from positioneverything) available that lets you achieve the same result without the clearing div. But... they claim the hack is a little out of date and instead you perhaps should look at this hack. But.. after reading through 700 pages of comments :) it seems there may be some places the latter hack does not work. I would like to avoid any javascript hacks cause I would like my clearing to work regardless of javascript being enabled. What is the current best practice for clearing divs in a browser independent way?

  • IWebBrowser2: how to force links to open in new window?

    The MSDN documentation on WebBrowser Customization explains how to prevent new windows from being opened and how to cancel navigation. In my case, my application is hosting an IWebBrowser2 but I don't want the user to navigate to new pages within my app. Instead, I'd like to open all links in a new IE window. The desired behavior is: user clicks a link, and a new window opens with that URL. A similar question was asked and answered here and rather than pollute that answered post, it was suggested I open a new discussion. The members on the related post suggested I should be able to do this by trapping DISPID_BEFORENAVIGATE2, setting the cancel flag, and writing code to open a new window, but I've found out that the browser control gets lots of BeforeNavigate2 events that seem to be initiated by scripts on the main page. For example, amazon.com fires BeforeNavigate2 events like crazy, and they are not a result of link invocation. Replies appreciated!
