• Cannot boot from windows 7 DVD

  Hi All, I have just purchased windows 7 64bit. I entered the disk in the drive and it told me I couldn't upgrade as I am using XP so I have tried to boot from CD instead but it doesn't work. It seems to look at the disk for a few seconds and then ends up at a screen saying windows failed to start and then I hit enter and it loads windows XP again. Does anyone know what could cause this? • How can I automatically boot to my new Windows 7 installation?

  When I bought a new computer, I reinstalled windows on the larger hard drive it came with, but kept the old hard drive as well. I'm keeping the old Windows installation on the hard drive in case I need saved passwords or other data only accessible after signing in. On the boot screen, it gives me the option to boot into the installation I'm currently using, or the "recovered" installation. Attempting to boot into the second one fails anyway. Is there a way I can automatically boot into this installation while still maintaining the possibility of booting into the old installation?

• Firefox: This connection is untrusted + Behind corporate firewall

  I've seen some similar issues strewn throughout Google's results about this, but none seem to be corporate-specific. I continually get the 'This connection is untrusted' screen every time I attempt to log into a secure site...for instance Gmail. This is pretty annoying as sometimes I have to go through the process of adding the exception two or three times before it finally lets me into Gmail. I am behind a corporate firewall, going through an internal proxy server to get to the Internet, so there is no possibility for me to update the firewall...etc. Does anybody know a way around this? Can it simply be disabled (and is that safe)? EDIT I'm going to reopen this question with a bit of new information. I have been using Google Chrome lately until today, and one thing that I noticed was that I never had this issue when using either Chrome or Internet Explorer. Is there something that these other browsers do that I need to manually do in FF?

• "Snapping" when in RDP

  I am using mstsc.exe version 6.0 (Remote Desktop non-Metro version) from an XP machine and cannot get Windows 8 snapping to work. I can drag a metro app window to the left or right, but it doesn't stick, it just bounces back to full screen. The snap bars do not appear. The client PC has two monitors, each with a resolution of 1280x1024. While mstsc.exe 6.0 does have an option to use both monitors simultaneously in normal settings, I am launching it with spanning enabled: mstsc.exe /span So the effective resolution in the session is 2560x1024. Is there a trick to getting this to work over RDP?

• Approaches to timed puzzle elements

  I'm working on a side scrolling game that has a number of timed puzzle elements. As a simple example: I have a number of moving platforms that have been setup to transition in a pattern. Ideally I'd like to ensure that as the player first approaches them, they are in an ideal state -- whereby the player can witness the full transition and more experienced players (i.e: speedrunners) can complete the puzzle immediately without having to wait for the current transition to complete. The issue here, in a nutshell, is that because these platforms begin transitioning at the start of the level, it's impossible to correctly calculate when the player is likely to stumble upon them. I've done a fair bit of Googling but haven't managed to turn up any decent resources with regards to solving a problem like this. The obvious solution is to only begin updating the objects when the player (or more likely: the camera) first encounters them. But this becomes difficult when you consider more complicated situations. It seems like potentially the easiest way of handling this is to have an invisible trigger volume that will tell any puzzle elements located inside of it that the player has 'arrived' upon first colliding with the player. But this would mean I'd have to logically group puzzle elements, which could become fairly messy in a hurry. Take, for instance, a puzzle that appears to the right of the screen. It may take the player a number of seconds to reach it. It would look strange if the elements involved were to remain stationary. But by the time the player arrives, it's likely things will be 'out of sync'. I wanted to post here in the hopes that others know of, or have implemented, a decent solution to this problem?

• Computer bluescreen-ing with 0x7A and 0xF4 errors

  Hiya, This computer is locking up for around 5-30 seconds before throwing Blue Screen of Death's with 0x7A and occasionally 0xF4 errors. The log files don't really show anything informative, and Windows Update doesn't show any new drivers for the HDD. Upon restart, it shows a "A disk error has occurred /n Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to continue", and to fix this I go into WinRE via the pendrive and run "bootsect /nt60 C: /force /mbr" and that seems to fix it so it boots. • how do I write a functional specification quickly and efficiently

  So I just read some fabulous articles by Joel on specs here. (Was written in 2000!!) I read all 4 parts, but Im looking for some methodical approaches to writing my specs. Im the only lonely dev, working on this fairly complicated app (or family of apps) for a very well known finance company. I've never made something this serious, I started out writing something like a bad spec, an overview of some sorts, and it has wasted a LOT of my time. Ive also made 3 mockup-kinda-thingies for my client so I have a good understanding of what they want. Also released a preview (a throw away working app with the most basic workflow), and Ive only written and tested some of the very core/base systems. I think the mistake Ive been making so far is not writing a detailed spec, so Im getting to it now. So the whole thing comprises of An MVC website (for admins & data viewing) 2 Silverlight modules (For 2 specific tasks) 1 Desktop Application Im totally short on time, resources and need to get this done quick, also, need to make sure these guys read it up equally quick and painlessly. So how do I go about it, Im looking for any tips, any real world stuff, how do you guys usually do it? Do you make a mock screenie of every dialog/form/page? Im thinking of making a dummy asp.net web forms project, then filling in html files in folders and making it look like my mvc url structure. Then having a section in the spec for the website and write up a page for every URL Ive got with a screenie. For my win forms app, Ive made somewhat of a demo Win Form project, would I then put in a dialog or stucture everything as I would in the real app and then screen shot it?

• Windows 7 keeps changing my language(keyboard) settings

  I am using Windows 7 Ultimate on a Windows network. My default settings is Danish locale, Danish keyboardlayout, but English system language. I only have Danish keyboard layout installed (in Text Services and Input Languages). However, at the login screen I can choose Danish and English, but whatever I choose Windows 7 changes system language (and keyboard layout!) to English (United States). Since this is a per-App setting I must change the language setting (language bar in the taskbar) Where can this be changed system wide and permament?

• Booting from a USB drive that was originally a boot drive

  When Win 7 went RTM, I upgraded my laptop from XP. But to protect myself against the possibility of having data inaccessible, I got a new disk and put it in the laptop, and took the old (XP) disk and put it in a USB enclosure. I have no trouble accessing the data on the USB drive under Windows 7. But I would like to be able to plug it in, tell the BIOS to boot from the USB drive, and be back on my old machine. The laptop is a Dell Precision M90, and it has a boot from USB option in its boot menu. But when I try to do that, it does read the drive, gets as far as putting up the Windows XP splash screen and starting the boot progress bar, and then reboots. What do I need to do to the old disk now running on USB to allow the machine to boot from it?

  About an year ago I installed gnome fonts on my MacBook Pro and I use them for Terminal.app Today I was using Terminal with three windows open and suddenly the app has quit (I don't know if I accidentally pressed command+q) but when I reopened the application fonts looks strange. I had a screenshot taken before the accident I did the same screenshot now and here's the result I don't know what's happened, I tried to reinstall the fonts, restarted the computer, but with no luck. One more thing, I use an external screen, I read some posts regarding font issues with external monitors but I had this monitor before this accident and everything worked fine until now. Please help me to solve this because my eyes were used to that font and now it looks weird to see this different font

• Role of systems in entity systems architecture

  I've been reading a lot about entity components and systems and have thought that the idea of an entity just being an ID is quite interesting. However I don't know how this completely works with the components aspect or the systems aspect. A component is just a data object managed by some relevant system. A collision system uses some BoundsComponent together with a spatial data structure to determine if collisions have happened. All good so far, but what if multiple systems need access to the same component? Where should the data live? An input system could modify an entities BoundsComponent, but the physics system(s) need access to the same component as does some rendering system. Also, how are entities constructed? One of the advantages I've read so much about is flexibility in entity construction. Are systems intrinsically tied to a component? If I want to introduce some new component, do I also have to introduce a new system or modify an existing one? Another thing that I've read often is that the 'type' of an entity is inferred by what components it has. If my entity is just an id how can I know that my robot entity needs to be moved or rendered and thus modified by some system? Sorry for the long post (or at least it seems so from my phone screen)!

• Ubuntu 10.04 install - frozen at splash, no errors

  Has anyone else come across this? After about as much of a fresh install as i can muster without buying new drives, and after walking through the amd64 alternate install with ease, and after a little 'pre-splash' screen where the orange dots under the (very sexy) new ubuntu logo blink away, I'm left with a vista of purple hues and logo plonked in the middle, with the dots not going anywhere. I was at this same position last night at 3 in the morning, left it lying overnight, and nothing had changed, so I'm pretty sure its frozen, but when i go in and inspect /var/log/* in the recovery console, no errors, no complaints, no problems. I'm at my wits end and am just about ready to try anything. If this was on SO I'd be bountying, but if anyone can help you'll just have to cope with my thanks! • Reliable alert dialogs from the shell

  I'd like to have a message pop up in response to various system events, mostly in order to be able to set reminders for myself from a shell session. There are a few ways to do this; zenity seems to be the most polished. However, I've found at least two problems with zenity: Messages do not appear on all workspaces. I tried using the gtk option --screen to control this, but they just appear on the current workspace regardless. So if I am switching workspaces as the message comes up, I will not see it. Messages do not appear above all other windows. Specifically, if I am using guake, a new zenity message will appear below the guake window and I won't be able to see it. I tried a few other apps a while back. Both gmessage and xmessage exhibited problem 1; gmessage also exhibited problem 2. I did find that kalarm, which can be scripted from the command line, worked acceptably, but I'm trying to avoid running the KDE stack if possible, and would prefer something lightweight with zenity's versatility. It seems that it might be possible to arrange for these problems to be resolved by setting the WM_CLASS, but I'm in a bit over my head there. It might also be possible to make modifications to the window after it launches with a script, but again I'm not sure where to look for resources on that.

• Laptop Touch-pad stops working after reattaching parts

  I was trying to replace my LCD screen for the first time, and it was a very hard process to do. I had to unscrew everything from the bottom of the laptop (Ram, HD, etc) and detach everything that was under the keyboard. After reattaching the LCD, putting everything back together, the touch-pad has stop working. Everything works except for that. Anybody know why it stopped working? I have an HP G61-429WM Laptop. Sorry if this was the wrong place to ask.

• How to Search for (and Find) Solaris Docs

  Just the other day, I went to the recently-released Oracle Solaris 11 library to search for information about the print service changes. I knew there had been changes in Oracle Solaris 11, but could not remember the new approach to printing. So, being the optimist that I (never) am, I went to the Oracle Solaris 11 Information Library on docs.oracle.com and typed "print service" into the search box. Imagine my surprise when the response back was: We did not find any search results for: print service site:download.oracle.com url:/docs/cd/E23824_01. OMG! WTF? Are you kidding me? After throwing a few stuffed animals at my computer screen, I tried again. Is search broken? Well, sort of (and I'm trying to get it fixed). In the meantime, however, there is a reasonably simple user workaround. Possibly unnoticed by most people, there is a Within drop-down menu on the Oracle search results page. If you simply open the Within menu, select Documentation, and click the little magnifying glass again, you (should) get the expected results. Is it perfect? • Arch Linux Terminal (via ssh) + Dropbox but sync only 1 single selected folder

  Sorry for the weird title... I'm (still) quite new to linux and are doing shh commands to an Arch Linux device that has not screen output options. So everything has to be done in the terminal (not my super element). I use the linux device to play around with python (which is quite fun). Now I would like sync my script folder with dropbox. Since I don't have enought space to sync all my dropbox files to the device, I would like to know how I can set it up in a way that it only syncs with the folder I choose. At the time being I have not installed dropbox because I'm afraid that it will immediately begin to sync all my dropbox folders onto my linux device. BONUS INFO: I already have created a folder in my dropbox that I that contains some py scripts I would like to have synced with my linux device.

• Calculate the Intersection of Two Volumes

  If you've ever played The Swapper, you'll have a good idea of what I'm asking about. I need to check for, and isolate, areas of a rectangle that may intersect with either a circle or another rectangle. These selected areas will receive special properties, and the areas will be non-static, since the intersecting shapes themselves will also be dynamic. My first thought was to use raycasting detection, though I've only seen that in use with circles, or even ellipses. I'm curious if there's a method of using raycasting with a more rectangular approach, or if there's a totally different method already in use to accomplish this task. I would like something more exact than checking in large chunks, and since I'm using SDL2 with a logical renderer size of 1920x1080, checking if each pixel is intersecting is out of the question, as it would slow things down past a playable speed. I already have a multi-shape collision function-template in place, and I could use that, though it only checks if sides or corners are intersecting; it does not compute the overlapping area, or even find the circle's secant line, though I can't imagine it would be overly complex to implement. TL;DR: I need to find and isolate areas of a rectangle that may intersect with a circle or another rectangle without checking every single pixel on-screen.

  I'm not a video editing type, so go easy on me ... practically don't know anything on the subject except that for some videos I view, "color modifying" works (buttons n, j, r for reset ...) and for some it doesn't. What influences that and how can I incluence contrast, saturation and so on on every video I play? (mostly some recordings of experiments in poor light conditions, so those controls really come in handy when viewing some details before taking out snapshots for reports) Also, KMPlayer has an enormous number of options. Is there one somewhere that can take a snapshot in a predefined directory of the what-I-see-on-screen every xy number of seconds?

  I need help enabling Intel 845g to run with intel drivers. I'v looked everywhere on the net with no joy. I can't seem to get intel video drivers to load the gui, only with vesa drivers. it drops me straight to the shell prompt. Xorg.0.log shows the following. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. • Firefox 12's hardware acceleration on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

  After I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32 bits), Firefox 12 works fine but without hardware acceleration. Needless to say I have the latest nVidia's proprietary drivers installed and my Firefox Preferences, on "Advanced" tab, "Browsing" section, have the option "Use hardware acceleration when available" checked. I have tried the following things before asking this question: Creating a boolean key "webgl.force-enabled" and set it to true on Firefox's page about:config; Starting a new profile like commented on thread Mozilla Firefox 12 is very slow on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS; I have updated my nVidia driver to version 295.53. And none of this have worked. As you can see below in my Firefox's page about:support report, "Graphics" section shows no "GPU Accelerated Windows": Adapter Description NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Vendor ID NVIDIA Corporation Device ID GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 Driver Version 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 WebGL Renderer NVIDIA Corporation -- GeForce GTX 460/PCIe/SSE2 -- 4.2.0 NVIDIA 295.53 GPU Accelerated Windows 0 AzureBackend skia I use the following site to test hardware acceleration: http://ie.microsoft.com/testdrive/Performance/FishBowl/ On Windows 7 I get 60 fps even with 1,750 fishes on browser's Full Screen Mode (1680x1050x32bit-color). • Migrated Virtual Machine Shows Up in Both Datastores

  Hi, We're using Vsphere client 4.0.0 Build 208111 with Virtual Center Server same version and same build. I have one vm with only one disk that is shown on 2 different datastores. If I look through VMs and Templates I see only 1 vm. If I look through Datastores screen, I see it in datastore-002 and datastore-003. If I go to settings of the virtual machine on datastore-002 and check the disk, I see the path as datastore-003. How can I fix this ?

• HTML5 game engine for a 2D or 2.5D RPG style "map walk"

  please help me to choose a HTML5 game engine or Javascript libraries I want to do the following in the game: when the game starts a part the huge map (full size of the map: about 7 screens) is shown. The map itself is completely designed in the editor mapeditor.org (or in some comparable editor - if you know a good alternative to mapeditor.org - let me know) and loaded at runtime or at design time. The game engine should support loading of isometric maps (well, in worst case only orthogonal maps will be sufficient) both "tile layer" and "object layer" from mapeditor.org should be supported. Scrolling/performance of this map should be fast enough. The map and the game should be either in 2D (orthogonal map) or in 2.5D (isometric map) The game engine should support movement of sprites with animation. Let say I have a sprite for "human" with animation sequences showing "walking" in 8 directions - it should be imported into game engine and should "walk" on the map without writing a lot of Javascript code. Automatic scrolling of the map the "human" nears the screen border. Collision detection, "solid" objects. The mapeditor.org supports properies on tiles. Let say I assign a "solid" property to some tiles in editor. It should be easy to check this "solid" property in the game engine and implement kind of "solid" behavior, so the animanted sprites do not walk through the walls. Collision detection - it should be easy to implement some custom functionality like "when sprite A is close to sprite B - call this function" Showing "dialogs" or popup windows on top of the map - should be easy to implement. Cross-browser audio support - (it is implemented quite well in construct 2 from scirra, so I'm looking for the comparable audio quality) The game itself is a king of RPG but without fighting scenes and without huge "inventory". The main character just walking on the map, discovers some things, there are dialogs and sounds. The functionality of this example from sprite.js http://batiste.dosimple.ch/sprite.js/tests/mapeditor/map_reader.html is very close to what I'm developing. But I'm not a Javascript guru (and a very lazy guy) and would like to write even less Javascript code as in the example...
