  A common theme in the GWT community is "I wouldn't want to build a project of THAT size using a pure JavaScript library!" What is the largest project that you have successfully delivered with frontend functionality written in JavaScript? (not Java or GWT) Please provide at least a hand-wavy SLOC estimate of the unique JS code (not including libraries, frameworks, toolkits, test code, generated code, server-side processing such as PHP, etc.) that was in the finished product. Note to GWT advocates: Please read the question carefully before answering. I've heard plenty of stories about JS failures and GWT successes, but I'd like to hear some quantified JS successes. • Why is HttpContext.Current.Session available in HttpModule but not in Response.Filter?

  I have written an HttpModule that adds a response filter. The filter is capturing page output and storing it in a session variable. I am able to access HttpContext.Current.Session in my HttpModule. The HttpModule is handling the PostAcquireRequestState event. I am still able to access HttpContext.Current.Session in the PostAcquireRequestState event. I am adding a custom stream that inherits from Stream to Response.Filter HttpContext.Current.Session is null when accessed from the Stream.Write method. Everything worked fine when using an InProc SessionState. However, I now must use StateServer. Using StateServer, the code is now broken. Any ideas?

• Teaching: How can you motivate students to comment?

  I remember when I was taught, "comments are the most important part of code." Or rather, when I was told that comments are the most important part of the code. I don't think I was convinced, and I still see common cases where programmers are not convinced of the necessity of good & thorough comments. I am certainly convinced myself at this point - trying to read, in particular, complex formulae that call functions that call other functions that I don't understand - but I don't know how to convey this to students.

• PNG file loading error in ImageMagick

  I'm trying to understand the tutorial 16 at http://ogldev.atspace.co.uk, which requires the image processing library ImageMagick. But when I run the tutorial, I encountered an following error: freeglut: failed to change scree settings Error loading textures 'test.png': no decode delegates for this image format 'C:/../appdata/magick-6024a_cIJcw90t-j'@error/constitute.c/ReadImage/552 I searched for google and found that my ImageMagick library do not have PNG Delegaes, but when I checked for the information of ImageMagick, it sees PNG in its delegate lists. Command line: convert -configure Result: LIB_VERSION 0x687 DELEGATES: bzlib, freetype, jpeg, jp2, lcms, png, tiff, x11, xml, wmf, zlib Could you explain to me this error, thanks so much!

  I'm not sure that it's not implemented yet, I hope that it is. But I know that in .Net programmers should manually run time-consuming task in the background thread. So every time we handle some UI event and we understand that this will take some time we also understand that this will hang UI thread and our application. And then we make all this Background work things and handle callbacks or whatever. So my question is: Is there in some language/platform a mechanism that will automatically run time-consuming tasks in the background and will do all related work itself? So we just write the code for handling specific UI event and this code will be somehow detected as time-consuming and will be executed in background. And if there isn't, then why?

• How Do I get the current instance from an AppDomain?

  Hi, I use the default appdomain (AD) which I use to create new appdomains (AD1) when required for running plugins in isolation. When creating the new domain I also wire up the AppDomainUnload event to allow me to call clean up code etc. The issue I seem to have is: 1) Create AD1 from AD 2) Run code in AD1 3) Call AD.Unload(AD1) The code switches to AD1 and calls the unloading event passing in a reference to the current AppDomain (AD1). At this point I'd like to get a reference to the current instance running in AD1 to call a shutdown method however there is no GetInstance on the AppDomain class. Any ideas how I can go about getting it?

• dojo.connect won't connect 'onclick' with button

  I'm running into a problem using dojo.connect() to connect an 'onclick' event with this button: <button dojoType="dijit.form.Button" widgetId="inbox_button" id="inbox_button">Inbox</button> and the code making the connection is: var inbox_button=dojo.byId("inbox_button"); dojo.connect(inbox_button,'onclick',function(){ var container=dijit.byId("center"); container.addChild(new dijit.layout.ContentPane({region: "left", content: "...", style: "width: 100px;"})) }); However, instead of executing the function when the button is clicked, ANY onclick event triggers the function, and I end up with a lot of children containers. Even though I'm pretty certain the .connect() function should be available as part of dojo's base functionality, I've 'required' it explicitly: dojo.require("dojo._base.connect"); Any ideas as to why this might be happening?

• Flash upload problems (FileReferenceList, timeouts, #2038 )

  Hello! I'm having problems with timeouts while trying to upload multiple files by using FileReferenceList. upload() is being called in a loop for all selected files on Event.SELECT event of FileReferenceList, but only 2 files are being uploaded simultaneously (I also see 2 opened sockets that are used for uploading by running netstat -aon | find "127.0.0.1:80"). If uploading of any file is not started in 60 seconds, I get a #2038 error. E.g., if I try to upload three large files (like 500MB each), first two uploads are started immediately, third one is not started (because limit is 2 simultaneous uploads) and it fails after 60 seconds with #2038 error (I'm fairly sure that this is because of timeout - tested it). This could be solved by calling upload() only when uploading previous file is completed, but I don't want to "hard-code" the number of possible simultaneous uploads (2 on my PC). Is there any way to get/set this number at runtime?

  I wonder if href and src attributes on <a> and <img> tags are always safe w.r.t. XSS attacks, if they start with http:// or https://. For example, is it possible to append javascript: ... to the href and src attribute in some manner, to execute code? Disregarding whether or not the destination page is e.g. a pishing site, or the <img src=...> triggers a terribly troublesome HTTP GET request. Background: I'm processing text with markdown, and then I sanitize the resulting HTML (using Google Caja's JsHtmlSanitizer). Some sample code in Google Caja assumes all hrefs and srcs that start with http:// or https:// are safe -- I wonder if it's safe to use that sample code. Kind regards, Kaj-Magnus

• Shader inputs in a general purpouse engine

  I'm not familiar with SDKs like Unity or UDK that much, so i can't check this off hand. Do general purpouse engines allow users to create custom uniform variables? The way i see it, and the way i have implemented it in an engine i'm writing to learn 3D, is that there is a "set" of uniforms provided by the engine and if you want to write a custom shader then you utilize uniforms you need to create a wanted effect. Now, the thing is, first of all i'm not an artist, second of all, i didn't have a chance to create complex scenes yet. So my question is, is it common practice to define variables that the engine provides and only allow the user to work with what they're given? Allowing users to add custom programs and use them where they want is not hard, but i have issues imagining how you'd go about doing the same for uniforms.

• Radio button inside anchor element is reset after jQuery click handler

  I have a situation where an element, of type radio, is contained in an element. The anchor element has a href but I want to override that behaviour by adding a jQuery 'click' handler to the element. The click handler makes the radio button inside it the selected one within the group. This all works when the anchor is clicked, however, when the radio button is clicked it appears that jQuery resets the selected radio to the previously selected one!   I have a Table and a Button. Table's cells have controls LiteralControl and CheckBox. I check some fields and then by click on button i remove these fields from database. On event Page_PreRender i clear Table and then fill it with updated data. Then it shows me Table with updated data. But if i check fields of table again and do a click on a button it wont do what i expected. In Page_Load event i see that it dont save properties of controls. Checked CheckBox controls appears as unchecked.

• Can't write text into textbox in ASP.NET web app

  Hi, I have an ASP.NET web application. In the codebehind for the .ascx page (which I embed as below), I attempt to write a string to a textbox in a method like this: Code for embedding control: Control ctrl = Page.LoadControl("/RackRecable.ascx"); PlaceHolder1.Controls.Add(ctrl); Method to make string for inserting into textbox: string AppendDetails() { StringBuilder sb = new StringBuilder(); sb.Append("msg" + " " + textbox1.Text etc etc ); return sb.ToString(); } Called as (in codebehind event handler for button click): this.TextBox4.Text = AppendDetails(); I call it by using ATextBox.Text = AppendDetails (in the button click event handler). The textbox TextBox4 is in the designer file so I am confused why the text does not get written into this textbox (it is readonly and enabled). When stepping through, the textbox4 control will successfully show the text I want it to display in quick watch but not in the actual page, it won't. Any ideas? Thanks

• WPF - How do I style a row based on a binding property value?

  Hey! So I am trying to bind a collection of objects (IList<) to a WPF datagrid. I would like to make the row background a different color if the 'artist' property is null or empty. I am checking the value stored at the property on the LoadingRow datagrid event. Currently my implementation seems to style all of the rows with an empty or null 'artist' property correctly. The problem is that is also styles the rows where the property is not null or empty in some cases. So some rows are given the red background even though the rows 'artist' property is not null. Can anyone tell me why this could be??   We've got a job queue system that'll cheerfully process any kind of job given to it. We intend to use it to process jobs that each contain 2 tasks: Job (Pass information from one server to another) Fetch task (get the data, slowly) Send task (send the data, comparatively quickly) The difficulty we're having is that we don't know whether to break the tasks into separate jobs, or process the job in one go. Are there any best practices or useful references on this subject? Is there some obvious benefit to a method that we're missing? I created a bunch of editable UITableViewCell by embedding an UITextField inside, but I have seen some apps that allows you to scroll the UItableview by scrolling inside an inactive editable cell. How can I do that? And how can I also dismiss the keyboard when tapping somewhere else? I know about the method: - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { UITouch *touch = [[event allTouches] anyObject]; if (touch.tapCount == 1) { [self resignFirstResponder]; } else { }} I put it inside my custom table view controller but the method doesn't seem to be called upon a tap, and I don't know if even if it gets called will dismiss the keyboard.   Hi Why is focus not set to noteTitle? I am using google maps API V3. The getNoteForm() returns a input field "noteTitle". The $("#noteTitle").focus() works fine when executed in firebug. • Is it better to concentrate on one or two research projects throughout undergrad?

  Currently in the 4th semester of engineering in an Indian university. The thing is - is it better to do as many short-lived projects/research work on diverse topics of computer science or stick to one/two projects consistently throughout my undergraduate years? Case in point: currently working on an image-processing project that promises to carry on for a year or so (as per the prof). Does this seem like being over-specialized at too early a level? Although taking on too many things will spread me out thin and in all probability not end up getting any meaningful work done. Especially as I hope to apply for grad school in the US. Would really appreciate any views and suggestions on this.
