• How to write the content of a dictionary to a text file?

  I have a dictionary object of type Dictionary and trying to use StreamWriter to output the entire content to a text file but failed to find the correct method from the Dictionary class. using (StreamWriter sw = new StreamWriter("myfile.txt")) { sw.WriteLine(dictionary.First()); } I can only retrieve the first element and it is bounded by a square bracket plus a comma separator in between as well: [Peter, Admin] and would be nice to have [Peter Admin] (without the comma)

• Entity Framework Custom Query Function

  I have an Entity Framework 4.0 Entity Object called Revision w/ Nullable DateEffectiveFrom and DateEffectiveTo dates. I was wondering if there was a short-hand way of querying an object's RevisionHistory based on a particular QueryDate date instead of having to use the following query structure: var results = EntityObject.Revisions.Where(x => (x.DateEffectiveFrom == null && x.DateEffectiveTo == null) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom == null && x.DateEffectiveTo >= QueryDate) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom <= QueryDate && x.DateEffectiveTo == null) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom <= QueryDate && x.DateEffectiveTo >= QueryDate)); I've tried creating the following boolean function in the Revision class: partial class Revision { public bool IsEffectiveOn(DateTime date) { return (x.DateEffectiveFrom == null && x.DateEffectiveTo == null) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom == null && x.DateEffectiveTo >= date) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom <= date && x.DateEffectiveTo == null) || (x.DateEffectiveFrom <= date && x.DateEffectiveTo >= date)); } ... } And then updating the query to: var results = EntityObject.Revisions.Where(x => x.IsEffectiveOn(QueryDate)); but this obviously doesn't translate to SQL. • Testing the context in asp.net mvc

  I got pretty experienced with testing controllers, my question here is though, aren't we supposed to test the data context as well, and how ? I mean, there are a lot of relationships and constraints coming from the DB that simply testing controllers does not cover. On the other hand, testing against the DB is not considered a good practice - what then ? Simply testing without db.SubmitChanges() or what ?

Assuming that I can compare objects of V against objects of T, I'd like to find which items are in listOfOnes but, not in listOfTwos. • Is it more efficient to always run a delete query, or to check if that information exists first

  Ok this is going to seem like a dumb question to experienced developers, but questions like this bother me until I ask them. So... is it more efficient to always run a delete query by default whether an entry exists or not, for example to delete a user name after a certain period of time (DELETE * from table where username=user), or should you check if that entry exists first using a select query and mysql_num_rows. What uses more processor on the server side? Obviously one approach contains more code, but I was wondering if certain mysql operations used a lot more cpu than others.

  hey all, im using linq2SQL to grab information from my SQL database, i have a gridview which shows all the top level information, in this case a list of groups (i.e admin, users and so on) when a user clicks say the admin group, i want to be able to show each member in that group, i have the following code which grabs the information from the database, DataClassesDataContext dc = new DataClassesDataContext(); GridViewRow row = GridView1.SelectedRow; var query1 = from p in dc.Users where p.groups.GroupID == Int32.Parse(row.Cells[1].Text) select new { p.Name, p.Address, p.Contact Number, p.Bio, }; i no i can use gridview again to display the results of the query, but this doesnt really look nice as it shows too much information at one, how would i go about having some sort of display which will show just one user at a time giving me the chance to click next and back ? thanks

Is there any php function or class that I can use to generate tree structure for my data???? • Self-referencing tables in Linq2Sql

  Hi, I've seen a lot of questions on self-referencing tables in Linq2Sql and how to eagerly load all child records for a particular root object. I've implemented a temporary solution by accessing all underlying properties, but you can see that this doesn't do the performance any good. The thing is though, that all records are correlated with each-other using a correlation GUID. Example below: RootElement - Id: 1 - ParentId: null - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement1 - Id: 2 - ParentId: 1 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement2 - Id: 3 - ParentId: 2 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD ChildElement1 - Id: 4 - ParentId: 2 - CorrelationId: 4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD In my case, I do have access to the correlationId, so I can retrieve all of my records by performing the following query: from element in db.Elements where element.CorrelationId == '4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD' select element; But, of course, I want these elements associated with each other by executing this query: from element in db.Elements where element.CorrelationId == '4D68E512-4B55-44f4-BA5A-174B630A03DD' && element.ParentId == null select element; My question is: is it possible to combine the results the first query as some sort of 'caching mechanism' for the query where I get the root element?   i use the downloadable geonames database for all countries, states, counties and cities in the world. but i wonder if there is a database for streets? so you could pick: country - state/department/district - (county/region) - city - street in whatever country you like? cause when i do a search for a street in google map i can see all the upper levels (country/region/city). is there a database you could download for mysql for this? there has to be a database for this, cause there are always national companies that provide this kind of information. where did they get it from? thanks in advance!

• Problems with contenttypes when loading a fixture in Django

  I am having trouble loading Django fixtures into my MySQL database because of contenttypes conflicts. First I tried dumping the data from only my app like this: ./manage.py dumpdata escola > fixture.json but I kept getting missing foreign key problems, because my app "escola" uses tables from other applications. I kept adding additional apps until I got to this: ./manage.py dumpdata contenttypes auth escola > fixture.json Now the problem is the following constraint violation when I try to load the data as a test fixture: IntegrityError: (1062, "Duplicate entry 'escola-t23aluno' for key 2") It seems the problem is that Django is trying to dynamically recreate contenttypes with different primary key values that conflict with the primary key values from the fixture. This appears to be the same as bug documented here: http://code.djangoproject.com/ticket/7052 The problem is that the recommended workaround is to dump the contenttypes app which I'm already doing!? What gives? If it makes any difference I do have some custom model permissions as documented here: http://docs.djangoproject.com/en/dev/ref/models/options/#permissions

  I'm doing a basic select against a view. Unfortunately the result can be slow and I'm getting timeout errors intermittently. How can I increase the timeout? Using .NET 3.5, Sql Server 2000, Linq2Entities I'm using the very basic query List<MyData> result = db.MyData.Where(x.Attribute == search).ToList(); Fixing the query so that it's faster on the DB side is not an option here. Exact Error: "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." Update: I'd prefer to just change it for this one query.

  I have a huge IEnumerable(suppose the name is myItems), which way is more effective? Solution 1: Filter it first then ForEach. Array.ForEach(myItems.Where(FILTER-IT-HERE).ToArray(),MY-ACTION); Solution 2: Do RETURN in MY-ACTION if the item is not up to the mustard. Array.ForEach(myItems.ToArray(),MY-ACTION-WITH-FILTER); Is one of them always better than another? Or any other good suggestions? Thanks in advance.

  I'd like to know why most Banks or Financial companies prefer Oracle than other RDBMS for their core systems (the absolutely minimum features that a Bank must support). I found a few answers that didn't satisfy me. For example: Oracle has more features. But features for what? Can't you implement that in application level if you were not using Oracle? Could someone please describe a bit more technical but still on high-level overview of what the bank needs and how Oracle would solve it and the others can't or don't have the features yet? I came from the web-app (web 2.0) crowd who normally hear news about MySQL, PostgreSQL or even key-value/column-oriented storage solution.   I want to help the Dev team identify areas of knowledge (practical and theoretical) that they can work on. Though I am big believer in focusing on people's strengths being a good programmer requires (I think) being challenged by concepts and ideas that don't always come naturally. We work largely in the web app space using PHP & MySQL but better skills in data modelling, query optimisation, use of MVC and OOP etc. would help the team and the company a lot. I want to help the Dev team manage their careers, explore and expand their skills sets. Be all they can be and better than they were previously. I know its an idealistic goal but work must be about more than simply getting the work done. There should be some time to review, to learn, to grow and get better. Any thoughts, ideas, opinions and directions to tests or similar resources would be greatly appreciated.

• Get correct output from UTF-8 stored in VarChar using Entity Framework or Linq2SQL?

  Borland StarTeam seems to store its data as UTF-8 encoded data in VarChar fields. I have an ASP.NET MVC site that returns some custom HTML reports using the StarTeam database, and I would like to find a better solution for getting the correct data, for a rewrite with MVC2. I tried a few things with Encoding GetBytes and GetString, but I couldn't get it to work (we use mostly Delphi at work); then I figured out a T-SQL function to return a NVarChar from UTF-8 stored in a VarChar, and created new SQL views which return the data as NVarChar, but it's slow. The actual problem appears like this: “description†instead of “description”, in both SSMS and in a webpage when using Linq2SQL Is there a way to get the proper data out of these fields using Entity Framework or Linq2SQL?

  Lets say i have the strings abc_ and abc2_. Now, normally when sorting i C# abc2_ would come after abc_, leaving the result: abc_ abc2_ I am using this to sort, if it matters: var element = from c in elements orderby c.elementName ascending select c; How can i change this? I want abc_ to come last. Reversing is not an option because the list is contains more than two elements.
