    I just changed the location of my blog, and have done the appropriate redirects. Does anyone have knowledge or experience for the delay in updating all the links across Google? Reason I ask, I wish to change the A record. So this will eliminate the .htaccess file, and thus null and void the redirect. How long must I wait prior to the undertaking? Thank you.

  • Using USB HDD with Arcserve / Brightstor

    I am having an issue configuring a standard USB HDD for use with CA Arcserve Brightstor 11.5 SP2 : Under the device list it shows a USB device category but none of my USB drives are listed underneath. I have attempted to "scan devices" but it makes no difference. I have also tried restarting the tape engine to no avail! Is anyone successfully using USB drives with Brightstor?

  • What is a good program for mixed mode circuit simulation?

    I'm looking for a program that will perform schematic capture and mixed-mode (analog and digital) circuit simulation. If it also did PCB layout and routing, that would be a bonus, but not necessary. I currently use an old version of CircuitMaker/TraxMaker, but its dated, and the simulation engine is a bit lacking. Windows or Linux, doesn't really matter. What is a good program for this purpose?

  • Splunk is fantastically expensive: What are the alternatives? [closed]

This has been discussed, but it has been several months, so it may be time to revisit it: Earlier discussion RE Splunk alternatives For the record, Splunk rocks. But the pricing is simply beyond what we can consider (When I spoke with Splunk today, the cost for a system to index 5gb/day of data is over $30,000.) That is more than we spend on SQL Server (by a large multiple), more than we spend on a rack of servers (by a multiple), etc. etc. The splunk sales team is correct (that for $30K we get more value and functionality than if we spend the same building our own system), but it doesn't matter. The splunk cost is simply too high (by a multiple). Soooooo, we are looking around! Is anyone out there building a splunk like system? Our basic need: Able to listen for syslog messages on multiple udp ports Able to index the incoming data in an async way Some kind of search engine Some kind of UI An API to the search engine (to embed in our console) We currently need to index 3-5gb/day, but need to be able to scale to 10gb/day or more. We do not need a lot of history (30 days is fine). We use Windows 2008 and 2003 servers. Thanks for your thoughts! UPDATE: We spent two weeks researching commercial and open source options. Our conclusion: Write our own (we are a software company... we know how to write things). We built a great system built on mongodb and .NET that gives us the functions we needed from MongoDB in about one engineering week. We have now completed our implementation. We use two Mongodb servers (master and slave), and are able to log and index any amount of log data (5gb/day, 15gb/day, etc), limited only by disk space. OBSERVATIONS: This space needs a solid solution that is $1000-3000 flat rate. The licensing models used by the commercial firms are based on a "milk the data center ops guys" models. That is their right (of course!), but it leaves a HUGE space open for someone to come in underneath them. My guess is that in another year or two there will be a good open source solution that will be really usable. Thank you all for your input (even if it was self promotion).

    Hi, Could anyone possible post a virtual host sample from a working httpd server, if possible with the most features enabled (like suPHP, suExec, php directives such as engine on off and others) ? The reason is that i wanted to see how it is formarted, and built per vhost... it's been a long time i dont use cPanel nor have it available so i can't really get it, i've been googling for it but havent found it at all.   • I know it is a VLC know issue, but cant find a workaround

    I installed VLC player, because it works better that other video player on HD videos, but know I have an issue all most of my games (All of those using Bink Video, that means all Unreal Engine games, Call of duty, and more). When I load the game, I can hear the videos, the audio is working, so I know the videos is loading, but there is no image on the screen! Once I read that it was a known VLC issue with DivX or something like that, cant remember, does anyone, know a way to fix it? Thanks in advance

    Hi, I'm configurint Postfix to use external smtp. For this, I use the following tutorial: http://carlton.oriley.net/blog/?p=31 After following it, I found in the logs that /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db couldn't be read. The file didn't exist. I used postmap hash:/etc/postfix/sasl_passwd (http://postfix.state-of-mind.de/patrick.koetter/smtpauth/smtp_auth_mailservers.html) as root, but I get: postmap: fatal: open database /etc/postfix/sasl_passwd.db: Permission denied Why do I get this?     This is a crucial question to many: Searching the web, I have found several command line tools that allow you to convert a HTML-document to a PDF-document, however they all seem to use their own, and rather incomplete rendering engine, resulting in poor quality How can you print the rendered output of a modern web-browser to pdf, (and/or svg) whilst retaining as much vector graphics as possible? There is a solution called: webkit-pdf (which renders everything to bitmap graphics) I am looking for options, alternatives, suggestions perhaps even a printer-driver or webservices? Thanks

  • Can I uninstall Silverlight? Does any major site still require it? [on hold]

    The last major site using Silverlight was Netflix but there's been an effort to implement Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 on the Mac for Safari. According to Netflix support is coming with OS X Yosemite. (See blog link below) For other platforms it appears Google Chrome also has support for Premium Video Extensions for HTML5 and Netflix will use it. Ubuntu has ec2-ami-tools and ec2-api-tools, but I couldn't find equivalent packages for Debian. A blog post titled "Install EC2 AMI & API tools in Debian" talks about installing Amazon's packages outside package management, but that seems a little clumsy.

Although the archived pages will probably be in Google's cache for a few weeks after they've gone and some of the pages will be in the Way Back Machine I'd like to archive those sites to my hard disk for future reference. What is the best way to do this? Is there any software that transforms a blog (e.g. Blogspot) into a chronological PDF?

    I've seen offerings such as VPSs (Linode, Rackspace Cloud), which are very cheap but you're on your own, and managed hosting (Engine Yard, Rackspace), which are very expensive but they do all the system administration for you, in some cases even writing your deploy scripts. Is there any kind of middle-ground option where I don't have to pay the huge flat rate for the management, but can still request specific sysadmin tasks to be carried out and pay on an hourly basis?
