• Connecting a network printer via a Thecus N2100 - works in Vista, not in Windows 7

  I have a Lexmark E250d printer attached to a Thecus N2100 NAS. On Windows Vista I've managed to configure this using an "Internet" printer port with the URL of http://thecus:631/printers/usb-printer. I can add a printer in a similar way in Windows 7, but it never manages to print the test page. If I go to "Configure Port" in Vista, it just has "Security Options" - on Windows 7 it's asking about Raw mode vs LPR mode etc. On Vista I'm using an E250d-specific driver from Lexmark; on Windows 7 there's a Microsoft E250d driver, or a Universal PCL XL driver from Lexmark... I wouldn't expect this different to be related to the problem, but I thought I'd mention it anyway. (Lexmark doesn't have a Windows 7 E250d-specific driver as far as I can see.) Any suggestions? I was thinking of upgrading my main laptop from Vista to Windows 7, but I'd really like to get this sorted first... EDIT: If I connect to http://thecus:631/printers/usb-printer via Chrome while capturing with Wireshark, I get this response: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Wed, 06 Jan 2010 16:47:23 GMT Connection: Keep-Alive Keep-Alive: timeout=60 Content-Language: C Transfer-Encoding: chunked Content-Type: text/html;charset=iso-8859-1 0 No idea what that's meant to be doing... EDIT: On further consultation, this would appear to be the Internet Printing Protocol which is layered on HTTP. Printing a test page successfully from Vista posts to that URL. Will attempt the same on Windows 7...

• [Word2007] How to showing "only number" in picture cross-reference

  I have many pictures in a document and I reference them very often in text. I don't want to lose the order so I am using Insert - Cross-reference. This opens the cross-reference dialog where I can set Reference type to Picture. For "Insert reference to", there are 5 choices: - Entire caption - List item - Only label and number - Only caption text - Page number, Above/below What I need is a reference that would be inserted like this: [4], and not like this: [Picture 4]; None of these options enable me to do it. Is there any way to make Word 2007 insert a reference to only Caption Number? Note: The document is written in Croatian language which has 7 declension cases, so using "Picture 4" would not be valid in all cases. Actually caption label Picture is set to croatian word "Slika" and when I need to say say "in the picture" I can't because it would be "na Slici 5." and not "na Slika 5." (like Word would make me do). That's why I need to reference only the caption number. Is that possible in Word 2007?

• [Mac OS X] Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS is not recognized anymore

  I have used Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS for years now, alongside with Elgato EyeTV software. I am a happy and completely satisfied user! Since a couple of weeks the USB sitck stopped working on my MacPro1,1 (OS version 10.6.3): EyeTV does not see any device attached, and actually, the green led on the stick stays off. 1) it is not a USB port fault: I have unplugged any other USB/Firewire device and tried with different USB ports, to no avail (any other USB devices work as expected on any port) 2) I have completely uninstalled EyeTV software, including preferences and system daemons/extensions, rebooted and reinstalled the latest EyeTV. No way. 3) reset the PRAM. Nope. 4) checked the Apple System Profiler - USB: No device attached, The MacPro does not see it at all. ============= I need to say that: a) the device worked as a charm even with the latest OS 10.6.x (so it's not a OS upgrade cause) b) I have plugged the Terratec Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS to my MacBook5,1 where EyeTV is not installed and was never installed: The green led on the stick turns on, the growl bubble pops up, and the device is perfectly recognized by the system. Apple System Profiler says (sorry, Italian language): Cinergy Hybrid T USB XS (2882): ID prodotto: 0x005e ID fornitore: 0x0ccd Versione: 1.10 Numero di serie: 061102005755 Velocità: Fino a 12 Mb/sec Produttore: TerraTec Electronic GmbH ID posizione: 0x04100000 Corrente disponibile (mA): 500 Corrente necessaria (mA): 500 At this point I am pretty sure the Terratec stick is not damaged and there is something wrong with my MacPro. • Certain Japanese characters aren't displayed properly

  On the following site: http://www.nciku.com/search/radical the first 2 characters on the second row of the "Step 2" table aren't displayed properly. All other characters look fine. I tried re-installing the Asian fonts via the checkboxes regarding Asian fonts in the "Regional and Language Options" control panel applet. I have tried removing every single Font from the Fonts folder (some were ofcourse not possible to remove), and re-installing them all again. I did this by... Running cmd Closing down the explorer process In cmd; using the command DEL /F /S /Q * in the Fonts folder Putting in my XP SP3 Retail disc In cmd; using expand -r *.tt_ in the I386 folder on the XP disc (and any other font file, in the I386\LANG folder) I also tried installing this pack from Microsoft, but this solved nothing either. I even tried running my browser (Firefox) through AppLocale. And changing character encoding -- again, does not help. I've also tried viewing the page in Internet Explorer. What could be wrong? I have checked my Fonts folder, to make sure that every single font available on the XP disc is available in WINDOWS\Fonts. What shows in the first square on the second row - I can't really tell what it's supposed to look like (but it's not the proper character)... but the second square shows a rectangular symbol containing HEX code. I've been in this situation before -- and it has been when I've been missing fonts. But how could I possibly be missing a necessary font? Shouldn't it be provided in the Asian "font packages"? I've talked to some other users that has viewed the page, and they had no problems displaying those characters on second row - even though they're only using the fonts provided on the Windows installation disc. • Mail.app doesn't detect sender in Address Book

  I don't understand, how does 'smart addresses' in Mail.app work. Recently I mentioned, that for some emails I don't see person's full name in 'From' column. I started to dig into this behavior and found out, that I have few contacts in my Address Book, that are not recognized by Mail.app. Here how it looks: I have a person in Address Book with filled email entry and filled first/last name (localized). I have an incoming email from that person (from email specified in Address Book), but first/last name in the email itself doesn't match with ones specified in Address Book (e. g. 'From' field in email looks like 'John [work] <[email protected]>' while Address Book entry is 'John Smith' (localized, in Russian)). And Mail.app doesn't recognize that this mail is originating from that person in Address Book: if I click on 'From' field, it suggests to me to add sender to Address Book, while for others' emails I have 'Show in Address Book' menu entry (especially for ones with full localized name in 'From' field). I'm wondering, is that behavior correct or I'm missing something? I'm using Snow Leopard & Mail 4.0; my system language set to English, if that matters. I'd like to have some clarifications on that Mail.app behavior: whenever it fixable or not (and if it's fixable, I'd like to see a fix). By the way, is it possible to match sender's address against Address Book entry in filter rules or not? That would be great, if I can create rules like 'move all mail from that person to that folder' without specifying exact source address. Thanks, Ivan.

• Gvim on Windows 7: ALT codes not working

  I would like to be able to enter ALT codes in Gvim on Windows 7 as documented on the following site: Alt Codes On Windows (Windows 7 in my case), to generate a character via an ALT code you make sure that the NumLock key on your keypad is toggled on, hold down the ALT key, enter the keycode on the numeric keypad, and then release the ALT key. However this does not work in Gvim on Windows (which ignores the fact that I am pressing the ALT key and just prints to entered keypad key directly onto the screen). How can I get these keystroke combinations to work in Gvim as well? Thanks. EDIT: As the answer below points out, the way to insert non-ASCII characters for which you do not have entries on your keyboard without changing the keyboard layout is as follows: Make sure you are in insert mode, and then type CTRL-V followed by the Unicode character code of interest, for instance: CTRL-V u00E0 (generates à) CTRL-V u00C8 (generates È) CTRL-V u00E8 (generates è) CTRL-V u00E9 (generates é) CTRL-V u00EC (generates ì) CTRL-V u00F2 (generates ò) etc... • How to configure IIS for SVG and web testing with Visual Studio?

  Let's say I have a simple web page with svg image in it: <img src="foobar.svg" alt="not working" /> If I make this page as static html page and view it directly svg is displayed. If I type the address of this svg -- it is displayed. But when I make this as .aspx page and launch it dynamically from Visual Studio I get alt text. If I type the address of this svg (from localhost, not as a local file) -- browser tries to download it instead of displaying. I already defined mime type in IIS (for entire server -- "image/svg+xml") and restarted IIS. Same effect as before. Question: what should I do more? • Time Drift on VM servers, need a reliable solution

  We have some windows server 2008 VMware instances on multiple physical servers (hosted) and an application which requires the time to be synced across the server instances. Obviously, VMware has problems with this and we really have never gotten it working any better, we have setup the servers to poll for an NTP update every minute which mitigates the problem (in a fairly crude way). Except that every once in a while, the update will fail (because there's already too much drift) and then windows never does an NTP update afterwards which eventually allows the servers to drift far enough apart that our application breaks, and we notice. We are thinking about changing hosts to Xen servers on approximately the same setup, and I anticipate similar problems. can anyone tell me if Xen has the same time-drift issues VMware does, for guests? can anyone tell me what the best windows server settings are for syncing with an external NTP server to keep things in sync: how frequently do you recommend syncing? (assuming every minute) do you recommend running our own NTP server - even if it has to be on a virtual instance? (assuming not) is there any way to tell windows to sync with the NTP server no matter what the time difference is? any other suggestions for keeping windows servers time in sync? • Exclude list of specific files in wget

  I am trying to download a lot of pages from a website on dial-up and it can be brutally slow. I have almost got the perfect wget command, but because I'm downloading pages from the same site wget wastes times downloading the same standard images for each page. If I know the name of the default page images, is there any way to have wget ignore and thus avoid downloading those for each and every page? But if I just issue the second wget command as it is then that page, same file really with an alternate name, opens up fine. Something that if I could fix would also help to streamline the process.

• Failing Windows Updates with Error Code 800719e4

  On a number of Vista machines I have now come across the same error - when installing updates everything works fine, until it after it reboots and the rolls back during step 3. On all occasions (where a simple retry hasn't worked) the error code has been 800719e4. On my own laptop I have so far tried the following:- Installed the updates one by one manually - I started on the smallest and one by one have worked towards the largest one which has left me with "Security Update for Windows (KB2286198)" that refuses to install. Renamed all the files in "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS" to "xxx.old" where xxx was the original name with windows update turned off - no change Renamed all the folders in "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" in the same manner - no change Attempted to install it manually "Windows6.0-KB2286198-x86.msu" - no change Tried to un-install IE8 - doesn't work, rolls back at the end (Installing the IE9 Beta when it launched was what alerted me to the issue on this laptop) Ran a "Fix It" thing from the Microsoft Website - no help (Can't find the link now). Tried to recover from the disk - but alas my laptop only has a recovery partition (and was unservice packed original). Ran with nothing running on startup, and only MS services - again no change. Google is being useless with a load of posts trying to get me to call a telephone number with letters in (presumably an American number) The error code appears to mean error log full but no one has any idea which log! For my test, I wanted to cache everything for one minute at minimum. Am I missing something obvious? • Enabling mod_wsgi in Apache for a Django app on Gentoo

  I installed Apache, Django, and mod_wsgi on Gentoo using emerge (on Amazon EC2). I know that the mod_wsgi is configured in /etc/apache2/modules.d/70_mod_wsgi.conf: <IfDefine WSGI> LoadModule wsgi_module modules/mod_wsgi.so </IfDefine> # vim: ts=4 filetype=apache So in my /etc/conf.d/apache I added the WSGI module: APACHE2_OPTS="-D DEFAULT_VHOST -D INFO -D SSL -D SSL_DEFAULT_VHOST -D LANGUAGE -D WSGI" But when I try to list the loaded module, mod_wsgi isn't listed. root ~ # apache2 -M | grep wsgi Syntax OK I also know that mod_wsgi isn't loading properly because the Apache configuration file doesn't recognize WSGIScriptAlias. By the way for Django to work I need to include a custom Apache configuration file. Where should I insert the line below? Include "/var/www/localhost/htdocs/mysite/apache/apache_django_wsgi.conf" I currently have that in the httpd.conf file but I feel like that file will get reseted whenever I upgrade Gentoo or related package. EDIT: it seems the mod_wsgi file is located in /usr/lib64/apache2/modules/mod_wsgi.so. • Requesting better explanation for expires headers

  I have successfully implemented expires headers however, for several days I have been stumped by one thing. This article: http://www.tipsandtricks-hq.com/how-to-add-far-future-expires-headers-to-your-wordpress-site-1533 states Keep in mind that when you use expires header the files are cached in the browser until it expires so do not use this on files that changes frequently. Other sites indicate the same in my reading. But this doesn't seem to be true. I have updated an image, using the same name, several times. Each time I update and refresh my browser, the new image (with the same name) displays. I understand from this article that the old image should display unless I use a new name. Do you happen to know where the misunderstanding is? • Does this exist: a standardized way of documenting a file-system structure

  At work, I'm in charge of maintaining the organization of a whole lot of varied data on a standard file-system. Part of this is coming up with sensible classification (by similarity, need, read/write access, etc), but the bigger part is actually documenting it: what documents/files/media should go where, what should not be in this directory, "for something slightly different, see ../../other-dir", etc. At the moment, I've documented this using a plaintext file filing.txt in every directory I want to document. If someone is unsure what's meant to be in any directory, they read that file. This works alright, but it seems odd that I have this primitive custom solution to a problem that any maintainer of a non-trivial directory structure must experience. Every company I've known of, for example, has some kind of shared file-system where agreed terminology for categorization is important. In my experience, people just have to learn what's what by trial-and-error and experimentation. So allow me to propose a better solution, and hopefully you can tell me if it exists. Any directory on any filesystem can have a hidden plaintext file named .filing. Its contents are descriptive human language. It uses some markup like Markdown, with little more than bold, italic, and (relative) hyperlinks to other directories. Now a suitably-enabled file browser will check for a file named .filing whenever it displays a directory. If it exists, its contents are parsed and displayed in an unobtrusive pane near the directory-path widget. Any links therein can be clicked, and the user will be taken to the target directory of that link. I think that the effort of implementing such a standard would pay back many times over in usability gains. We would have, say, plugins for Nautilus, Konqueror, etc.. It could be used to display directory information in the standard file lists served by webservers. And so on. So, question: does such a thing exist? If not, why not? Do people think it's a worthwhile idea?

• v2v of RHEL5 box - issues with retaining MAC address

  For the last week we have been troubleshooting a customer's Red Hat Virtual Machine running on ESXi. We've been using Veeam to try to create a replica off-site and have been having getting it to work on a decent schedule and recently we noticed that there were issues with orphaned snapshots while looking at the datastore. You can see several snapshots in the same folder and it's causing issues with replication and backup, so we decided the cleanest way was to v2v the machine to another datastore so that we had a clean single-vmdk setup to work with, this is where our trouble started. We first started off with a v2v using vmware converter and connecting to the powered on machine as we were having issues doing an offline v2v. This copied fine but when I tried to set a static MAC using this article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=507 the new VM wouldn't take the address, it simply obtained a new MAC, received a dhcp lease and then would only boot up to a blank red screen, never the login screen. So the next step was to do an offline v2v, once we finally got it working. Same thing, followed the kb to the letter and still it wouldn't take the MAC. I then tried it again and upon completion I compared both old and new VMX file, copying every identifier and variable possible, then unregistered both VMs, uploaded the new VMX file and booted, only to see the same results. Finally I did the same as above but I copied the disk using DD to a second attached vmdk and then attached this to the new VM, and still no luck. After downloading the modified VMX file after the first boot and comparing it to the original I created I found that the bios uuid had changed from the one I typed in manually, so I'm assuming this may be the snagging point, but I have no idea. I've never had this issue before on a P2V and I'm just wondering if someone could shed some light on this, maybe it's to do with RHEL licencing?

• Free, simple, configurable SOCKS5 server

  I've been looking (for the past 6-7 hours) for a fast, free and configurable SOCKS5 server. I haven't found anything that matches my needs. They are either too complicated, too bare-bones or simply buggy as hell. This is (all) I need: I want it to run on Linux (and also OS X, preferably) I want it to listen on localhost:8888 When my app (say wget.. or curl --socks5=localhost:8888) requests http://www.google.com/search?q=asd (or any other url - both http and https), I want it to fetch the page not from google's servers, but from http://localhost:4444/cached?uri=http://www.google.com/search%3Fq%3Dasd. Nothing more! I don't need caching, or anything else. I just want a SOCKS5 server, running locally, which redirects all queries to my own (local) server. It could be written in C, C++, Python, PHP, Perl, Node.js or any other language. I don't care, as long as it supports my (very limited) needs, or I can easily change the source to make it so. • Is this "cache administrator" error my server's problem?

  Hey, I have a CentOS VPS running Apache with a phpBB installation. One specific user has received errors when posting a message or logging in to the forum. The following issue has arisen in parallel to installing nginx, which serves only the static files of my site. Not sure if this is only coincidence. Furthermore, my setup uses redirects (in some cases, double-redirects) to point the user to a different virtual folder. So, the forum is seen to be at /translation/ but the actual files are found in /phpbb/. I'm at a loss as to what may be the underlying issue. My server? The person's ISP? She has tested both at home and at work, with similar issues. Important to understand that the print failure only happens in certain circumstances: Note: We use a standard Windows printer selection box to choose the printer Terms used Superbase = a program language that uses ntvdm.exe (Windows process hosting 16 bit apps) Local Printer = printing to a driver loaded onto the Server 2008 Redirect Printer = printing to a automatically established remote printer through an RDP connection Printing Scenarios Server 2008 - 1: Print from notepad to a Redirected Printer = works Server 2008 - 2: Print from Superbase to a Local Printer = works Server 2008 - 3: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = fail Server 2003 - 4: Print from Superbase to a Redirected Printer = works Results The print causes a message in the drivers print queue of Local Downlevel Document, no print though and Superbase recognises that the "Print command failed". This is the thing, after installing and reviewing the logs on Wireshark: Outlook Express: HELO machine AUTH LOGIN username base64 encoded password base64 encoded mails go through. Outlook 2010: HELO machine AUTH DIGEST-MD5 response from server Outlook sends just a * AUTH LOGIN password base64 encoded So... I can send mails in the same domain, but can't send outside, it gives me a relay denied message. My point is... Why the h**l Outlook 2010 doesn't send the username AND the password?! It can never login the right way :| With other versions of Outlook it works fine, and with OE works great, it auths and allows to send mail to a different domain. I've googled and nothing worked. I'm pretty sure that I'm not alone with this one. My last resort will be to configure a local proxy/server that relays to the original one :| Any help would be appreciated. • Why Wireshark does not recognize this HTTP response?

It's written in Perl and using CGI module and it specifies only the most basic headers: print $q->header( -type => 'text/plain', -Content_length => $length, ); print $stuff; There's no apparent issue with functionality, but I'm confused about the fact that Wireshark does not recognize the HTTP response as HTTP--it's marked as TCP. • In solaris, how monitor & auto-respond to critical events

  I have a website that randomly fail. Is running in open solaris on joyent. I have a monitoring service that alert me when the site is down, but, I want a way to put a "insider" tool that tell me why that happened. Is because the cpu is too high? Not memory? Which process fail? Is possible to have a backtrace of that? Everything is running on the Solaris Service Management Facility. The webserver is cherokee, the database is mysql and the language is python/django. I want the most simple setup to monitor that & auto-respond , ie: restart the webserver or the django process in case of failure. I prefer a low-overhead tool. I don't need the fancy monitoring that some tools have, no ned graphs or sms alert. Only know what fail, restart it if possible (maybe up to n times), and have a log somewhere when I will check it.
