• How do I fix a terrible system error on ubuntu 12.04

  I don't know what happened, but one day my computer had some sort of a system error and could no longer update itself. The software center will not open, it will begin to initialize and then a message pops up saying theres a system error and needs to shut down the software center. Then another box pops up after I go to report it saying it was unable to identify source or package name. I also can't extract a zipped folder to anything, or reinstall Ubuntu from a USB boot drive anymore, it keeps telling me my my computer isn't compatible when I know for a fact it is, because thats how I got Ubuntu on here in the first place. the only thing I know about this error is that a message popped up after I went to check for updates saying to report the problem and include this message in the report: 'E:malformed line 56 in source list /etc/apt/sources.list (dist parse)' it also called it a bug. I just want to know how to either get rid of the bug completely or find some way to be able to reinstall Ubuntu again. I know it's not a lot of information, but It's all I can give. Sorry.

  Hi, I cant browse php pages in my local server.Before it was working fine. But now i cant browse php pages, i can browse html pages and asp pages , no problems with that. But when i try to browse a php page its not loading. What will be the problem?? I am using windows 2000 advanced server and my web server is Tomcat please someone help me Guys i'm not getting anything in my browser, its just continue to loading Nothing showing in that page i'm not getting any 404 error or anything like that. its just continue to be loading for example consider my file is located under insider a folder named as myproject i can reach upto this http://localhost/projects/myproject but after that i cant browse php pages inside that... http://localhost/projects/myproject/index.php this will continue to be loading, and nothing shows in that page

• Dual Boot Win8 and Win7 - Win 7 fails while booting

  Below are my dual boot settings. Both are on different partitions, default is Windows 8. Both were working fine. There are multiple users of this machine, few run 8 while few 7. All 7's users are novice and they use Internet only. I frequently update Windows 8 but not 7. Few weeks ago, Win 7 stopped booting. Machine gets restarted while booting with 7(Windows 7 start up glowing-Win-logo-screen does not appear) and the 8's loader reappears. Win 7's partition still exists and contains Windows folder What steps should i take to check the problem?

• Symlink across local volumes in webroot?

  I am looking for a good short-term solution to storage space concerns on my website. Currently, I have all uploaded files (flash video, images, etc.) inside the 'files' directory in my web root (/home/account/public_html/files). That directory is located on my high-speed main hard drive (a 15k SCSI drive). I have another drive with much more capacity, but spinning at 10k rpm (so still fast, but not as good for random reads/writes as the main drive. The entire drive is mounted at /backup Right now I'm just using it as a backup volume. I would like to create a symlink from my /home/account/public_html/files folder to /backup/files, and have all files reside on the second drive. However, if someone accesses a file at http://www.example.com/files/filename.jpg, would it still work if I symlinked to the second drive? (Basically, would Apache/PHP automatically know to follow the symlink for that directory?).

  I have a static mockup page, which I want to "customize" by switching a variable used in image-src and link-href attributes. Paths will look like this: <img src="/some/where/VARIABLE/img/1.jpg" alt="" /> <link rel="some" href="/some/where/VARIABLE/stuff/foo.bar" /> I'm setting a cookie with the VARIABLE value on the preceding page and now want to modfiy the paths accordingly by replacing VARIABLE with the cookie value. I'm a htaccess newbie.   OS: Windows 7 64-bit App: Outlook 2010 32-bit Server: Exchange 2010 I'd like to modify Outlook's default startup behavior so that it shows both my Inbox and Calendar when I click my shortcut. I use both of them all day, and know how to just right-click the calendar and select "Open in New Window." I run my inbox on one screen and my calendar on another. I also configured my calendar to be the folder that opens by default when I start Outlook so I don't miss early appointments, but if I could somehow have BOTH open in two separate windows, that would be awesome. Is there a command-line interface or something that can accomplish this? Thanks in advance.

• Can Robocopy be made to skip open files?

  We are using Robocopy to redistribute files which arrive via FTP in a drop folder. Ideally we want Robocopy to leave files alone if they are still being FTPd. Having tried various switches, Robocopy still copies the open files. It doesn't delete them, so the FTP continues unaffected. However, we end up with truncated files being distributed to their destination. Can Robocopy be made to skip open files? Perhaps there is something more suitable than Robocopy for this task?

  I know there are ways to share a folder across computers making it easy to move files. But I was wondering how one would setup a single login which lets you access the same files regardless of which machine you login on? What I would like is something similar to something you would see in a college campus where students login on machines in the lab and see their files regardless of which machine they use. I know there are server involved here. I have a need to create this on a smaller scale where we have a few computers available (and one of these could act as the server if needed and host the files) that every one shares. Note, the specific install of software might be different on each computer but the login and OS are the same. Since some computers have additional capability that our group members will need to use at rotating schedules (software licenses or hardware components, etc.). I have not done this before, so I would appreciate detailed instructions if possible or a reference to a guide that describes this. Thanks in advance.

• Best practice to create an ftp administrator account on vsftpd

  Background: My manager would like me to create an administration account for out FTP server. When logged in via ftp, it should instantly display all of the home directories of the users, and be able to modify any directory or file in any way possible. What would be the best way to go about this? I planned on chrooting this ftp admin to /home, but I don't know how to properly go about the permissions. Maybe make a group called ftp_admins, and chgrp the /home folder? But then wouldn't it affect the users accessing their folders? any help is appreciated.

  A couple of basic questions related to SEO. 1) If I have a site that has several different niches that I am trying to promote from. Example Web Developer broke down into section of Web Design, Graphic Design, Programming, Software for SEO purposes, would it be better to use subdomains for these main sections or use the main domain with a folder like structure? 2) Is PR different for each page of a domain or ever page has a PR of the same on that domain? Also do sub-domains have a different PR? 3) When entering a hugely over saturated niche such as web-design, is it even possible to compete with the big sites that have been ranked on google #1 page for years? 4) Lastly, I have read about how important titles, link anchors, and headings are for SEO and how content is the most important. So left's say we are building a standard header, body, sidebar, footer page. In the the actual markup, would it be better to make sure the main content comes before the sidebar on the page or does this probably not make a difference? 5) I seen mentioned in another answer here that microformats can help with SEO, is there any fact behind this? • Bash script getting automatically deleted from Ubuntu 12.04 Server?

  I'm running a bash script on an ubuntu 12.04 through cron. The script works fine for a few weeks (runs daily backups of websites, mysql databases, and copies to Amazon S3). However, twice now I've noticed that backups stopped happening. Both times the backup script (backupscript.sh) located in my home folder was no longer there. No one else has access to this server, so nothing was manually changed on the server and no one deleted the file by mistake. The cron job (nano /etc/crontab) still references this script, but the script itself disappears. What could cause this to happen? Does Ubuntu delete the script if it runs into some sort of error?

  I'm trying to use a cURL command to download a file from an FTP server to a local drive on my computer. I've tried curl "ftp://myftpsite" --user name:password -Q "CWD /users/myfolder/" -O "myfile.raw" But it returns an error that says: curl: Remote file name has no length! curl: try 'curl --help' or 'curl --manual' for more information curl: (6) Could not resolve host: myfile.raw; No data record of requested type I've tried some other methods, but nothing seems to work. Also, I'm not quite sure how to specify which folder I want the file to be downloaded to. How would I do that?

  Hi all, here's my case, I have set up a share in a virtual windows server 2008 R2, the server is hosted by GoDaddy my question is, how do I access the server's public folders, I need to open a file locally (on the client) and to do that I need the server to show up in my Network locations, I have the right credentials and have created a special group that has access to the particular folder that I'm sharing the problem is I don't know how to add the server to my network locations. I have tried VPN Connection but it is my understanding that it cannot be done since it is virtual share server. Any help is trully appreciated.

• How do I fix this error? Windows server 2003 the application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022)

  Opening one of the programs from the user desktop I get the above Aplication error. It is a proram stored on the server and then the icon put on the users desktop (this is how I was told to do it) but it does not run the application. I don't know anything about group policies etc and can just about manage to add users in the active directory and that is it. We just have a folder which we drop the program icons into. Any ideas? I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't always show up on their desktop either. What is the simplest way to do this? Thanks

• What's a fast way to copy a lot of files from an internal hard-drive to external (USB) storage?

  I have a large amount of data - about 500 GB - on the internal hard drive of a desktop PC. This includes music, videos, PDFs... you name it. I want to copy everything to an external USB hard drive (1.5 tb capacity). The desktop PC runs Ubuntu. To being with, I simply plugged in and mounted the hard drive and dragged the top-level folder onto the drive. It's started copying, but it seems to be proceeding very slowly. About 10 minutes later and it's only done about 500 MB. I'm sure this is slower than what I could achieve with less total data. So I'm wondering if there's a quicker way of doing this. Would it be better to copy it in portions of 500MB or so, rather than all at once?

  I'm looking for a good batch script that would quickly find & clean all the known safe temporary folders/files from Windows (as many variants as possible) machines (e.g. the windows temp folder, all users IE temp folders, etc.). I'm fond of UI tools like CCleaner (over Cleanmgr.exe), but when I'm trying to clean several computers quickly and/or with minimal involvement, it would be nice to have a script. Plus with a script, I could chain several scripts together. Maybe one to then fire up various antivirus and/or malware detectors. Anyone have a good one or can point to a good resource?

Now the issues is that for one folder it works perfect, but for 80 to 90 folders it is taking too much time. I think it's because of findstr and the different extensions used. Is there any way to make it faster?

• Worker processes not starting in IIS 7.5. What should I check?

  I have a Windows 7 machine (Windows version 6.1.7601 SP1 Build 7601) with IIS installed. At some point the installation appears to have become 'corrupted' in some way, as any requests are now met with the message: Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. In IIS manager IIS is started and the app pool I am using reports itself as 'Started', yet there is no w3wp.exe process listed in the process list in task manager (I am a local admin and have clicked the 'Show processes from all users' button. I have enabled logging for the web site (at default location of %SystemDrive%\inetpub\logs\LogFiles), but this folder is empty. I am assuming that this log output is written by w3wp.exe as it handles requests (no w3wp.exe, no log file?). Presumably there is another layer of request handling that is responsible for starting the worker processes, does thsi layer have log files I can check, and/or can I uninstall/re-install that layer?   I use Outlook 2010 with Hotmail connector. MS says that you can sync your Outlook rules with your Hotmail but I cant see how. My actual problem is - I add a guy to my Junk blocked senders list (and I check it visually - it is in the list). But I keep receiving emails from this guy. It doesnt go to the Junk folder in Outlook. I need my Outlook to honor the rules locally at least. Is it possible?

• Mac Console.app not logging any messages

  I recently attempted to overcome the 500 message limitation on console logs using the advice provided here: Mac: Extend or disable 500 Messages Limit of Console I copied the PLIST file onto my desktop, made the modifications, and re-copied into the LaunchDaemon folder. No dice. Unfortunately, this also broke logging in general- the console hasn't logged a message since I attempted this switch. I even went back and undid my changes. Still no logs. What's going on? Is there a way to reinstall Console.app, or revert to original settings?

• How To Export/Import a Website in IIS 7.x

  IIS 6 had a great feature called ‘Save Configuration to a File’ which would allow you to easily export a website’s configuration, to be later used to import either on the same server or another box.  This came in handy anytime you wanted to duplicate a site in order to do some testing without impacting the existing application.  So naturally, Microsoft decided to do away with this feature in IIS 7. The process to export/import a site is still fairly simple, though not as obvious as it was in previous versions.  Here are the steps: 1. Open a command prompt and navigate to C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv and run the following command: appcmd list site /name:<sitename> /config /xml > C:\output.xml So if you were wanting to export a website named EAC, you would run the following: If you’ll be setting up another copy of the site on the same server, you’ll now need to edit the output.xml file before importing it.  This is necessary in order to avoid conflicts such as bindings, Site ID, etc.  To do this, edit the XML and change the values.  Go ahead and make a copy of the home directory, and rename it to whatever folder name you specified in the output – /EAC2 in this example.  If you decide to change the app pool, make sure you go ahead and create the new app pool as well. Once these edits have been made, we are now ready to import the site.  To do that run: appcmd add sites /in < c:\output.xml So for our example it would look like this: That’s it.  You should now see your site listed when opening up Inet Manager.  If for some reason the site fails to start, that’s probably because you forgot to create the new app pool or there is a problem with one of the other parameters you changed.  Look at the System log to identify any issues like this.
