• 32bit ODBC Postgres driver on Windows 2008 R2 x64

  I'm trying to install the Postgres ODBC 32bit driver on a Windows 2008 R2 64bit machine. After installing it, with no errors, I go to the ODBC panel, the 32bit version under the /syswow64 folder and try to add the driver, select the Postgres driver from the list but I get an error 126, saying he can't find the driver at the specified path. The problem is that the path he shows me, is the exact path the driver is in, I double checked on the registery (on the HKLM\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\ODBC\ODBCINST.INI\ location) and it's fine there too. A couple more people on technet have the same issue too. Did anyone ever run into this? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. edit: the driver works fine on my win7 x64 test machine, this behaviour only happens on the server.

• Backup of images

  I've just installed a Ubuntu for a file server. It will share a folder (samba) and employees of my company will save photos on that. Currently the total amount of the photos is about 100GB and every day 20MB will be added. My question is about backup plan. I want to backup the photos to a remote server using a cron job. I can think of 2 things. rsync git Image files won't be changed so rsync will do. But as people say, I must git all my data. What would you do? Thanks. Sam

• Ubuntu 11.10 w/ Cinnamon - Icons are gone and pictures do not display

  I'm new on this site and new to using Ubuntu and all. I currently have Ubuntu 11.10 and Cinnamon along with it. I've recently downloaded only a few applications, like the Adobe shockwave as well as a few games. After the downloads, the icons for the windows (the close, minimize, and maximize) are nothing but streaks of colours, and now just plain black, picture previews in my picture folder is gone, some icons on the panels are missing, and icons in the control center are gone. I'm sure more are gone, but that's the ones that I see often. I'm not sure what caused this to happen?? Please get back to me soon! I'm worried about what has happened. ): This is my only laptop to get online. I have no other way besides the library but that takes too long.. EDIT: Okay, I had asked my sister for some help and she helped me restore my minimize, maximize, and close button but I still haven't figured out how to show the icons in the cinnamon dock (which I have set at the top of the window) and how to have my pictures show up again. All of my pictures are just blank and I can't even preview them. They still have their file names but that is it. I'm not sure what has happened. I haven't downloaded any new apps as of the new edit.

• how do you uninstall an xampp installation that refuses to uninstall?

  I downloaded xampp 1.7.3 (32) on windows 7 (64) in the programs(86) folder. both MySql and Apache refuse to run, they start and then instantly turn of. All ports are free. So I decide to uninstall however, when i run the uninstaller I receive the following error "Input Error: Can not find script file "C:\Program Files (x86)\xampp\uninst.temp\xampp_uninstall.vbs" XAMPP uninstall not OK Why is there spaces in the above line and does this matter "C:\Program Files (x86)" ? Can somebody please help me to understand the problem & uninstall xampp (or get it to work). It does not show in the control panel so I am stuck. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

• Adding cygwin on right click on windows explorer

  I wish to add a command on right click menu in explorer that opens current directory with cygwin. For same I have successfully added these registries: [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\classes\directory\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\classes\drive\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" but this adds the command only when on some folder or drive. I want generic right click on explorer, on which, search gives me this registry to edit: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell\cygwin] @="c:\\cygwin\\bin\\bash.exe --login -i -c \"cd '%1'; bash\"" My problem lies with the value of the key, which doesnt work on %1 but on some static value like /cygdrive/c Could someone please tell me the proper way to pass current directory to the command, also please refer me some basic and advanced pages for same. • Outlook keeps dropping 'Other Calendars'

  We run Exchnage 2010 with Outlook 2007, and we have public calendars that users are able to 'Add to favorites...' - these are then shown under 'Other Calendars' when a user clicks their 'Calendar' tab. The issue we are having is that these calendars drop off every now and again. Looking under 'Public Folders - Favorites', I can see that the calendars are there, but Outlook doesn't seem to know that they are calendars any more. Simply clicking on one of them to open it changes the icon to that of a 'Folder containing calendar items' for each of the favorite items, and closing and reopening Outlook gets them back under 'Other Calendars' My question is this - how can I make Outlook stop forgetting that these public folders are calendars? I can see hidden Files with FarManager and I cannot see them in Windows Explorer(even with show hidden files option?!!) How can I restore it to its original file extension?   How can I recover a lost text file in Windows 7?? It has very important information in it and of course, it is gone because of the stupid Windows Update thing....it just automatically closed all of my stuff and restarted my computer!! Would the text file possibly be in the Temp folder in my computer?? I don't know much about this stuff...but I need it. • Deploying a Windows 7 image, which way is the fastest?

  I captured an image of a basic Windows 7 installation with some modifications using imagex. Before the image was captured, I ran sysprep generalizing and selecting to enter OOBE after it's done. Which way would be the fastest to deploy that image again? Using imagex /apply. Or naming the image install.wim and put it in the source folder of a normal installation (on a bootable USB device), running a normal setup afterwards. Currently I have only tried the second approach. However I just found out about the imagex way and wondered if it would be faster. Or are the even more methods that would be better?

  I know that under Windows there are multiple ways to get an app to autostart but I can never remember what all of those ways are. Is there a single unified way to bring up a list of all programs which are set to run themselves at startup and let me disable those I don't want? I'd prefer something built into Windows. I have Windows 7 Starter. But a free / open source / shareware tool would also be acceptable. (This time the software I want to prevent from autostarting is: MSN Messenger, Y! Messenger, and Vodaphone Mobile Broadband, which starts whether the dongle is inserted or not. None of these three are in Windows's "Startup" folder.)

• Restoring backup with Deja Dup from external HD

  So, here's the problem that I have with restoring. First, I backed up like everything. So I had place on the external HD for only one copy. I had to reinstall everything, but I didn't worry because I had a backup. But now, restoring doesn't work and it starts to be annoying. So, I right click "Restore missing files...". Then I have the popup window from Deja Dup asking where is the backup. So, I select the external HD and either put nothing in "folder" or just put ".". Thinking that it should be the base to look for backups. In both cases, after a while scanning, I get: The Volume "Filesystem root" has only 139.7mb disk space remaining. But my partition "/home" has 799.6Gb free. Also, I just want to restore some files, I don't need all of them. On my external HD, there's a file called: duplicity-full.20120514T220834Z.manifest. A text file. In it, I can see that everything is partitions in files of 52mb. So, small files are in one archive while very large files are split in multiple one. But I can see the exact list of file that I have. So, I'm guessing that my backup is intact. What am I doing wrong ? Is possible that it failes, even to list all the files, because I don't have enough space left on my ExtHD ? Why can't duplicity used another location to do that ?

• Uninstall nginx on Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS remote machine

  I was given a server to setup, problem is this server was no reset, and the provider is quite slow on resetting it, so I have to completely uninstall some stuff it has, one of which is nginx. I had a few problems when doing setup on my local machine for nginx due to multiple installations of it, so I want to avoid the same mistake now. Problem is, I got no idea how nginx was installed here, and I need to remove it. When I access the server thro SSH i only have this folder $HOME/backups/nginx any idea how to uninstall this? Whenever I google it only come up with apt-get uninstall and so forth. Thank you

• Is it possible to avoid umask 0002?

  Is it possible to give an automatic ability to modify files(folders and all recursively) created by one user to another within one specified folder (let's say "shared") on the basis of both users belonging to the same secondary group (let's say "coworkers")? I've tried to achieve this by using ACL but with no success. Seems that umask wipes out corresponding bits.... I'm on FreeBSD 8.1 (but seems this problem is actual for other *NIX systems).   I want to do something more than just normal mail - folder rules; I want to put a layer in front of my exchange server that lets me, for example, rewrite subjects into a more readable form. I get automated messages whose subject format makes them almost useless. Changing the emitting software is not going to happen, so I need to do something client side. I'm interested in anything that would allow me to do this, either on a mac, or on an older linux distro. Preferably the latter, and preferably in a way that I can turn on and forget about.

  I have an HDD with plenty of files, some of which are unfortunately corrupted. I'm now trying to copy the good files into a new HDD. I'm using: rsync -azP SRC TGT When rsync comes to one of the corrupted files, I can see a message in the console: rsync: read errors mapping XXX: Input/output error (5) In the target folder, I still see the corrupted file, which I'm not able to open and which I have to delete manually. Is there any option to tell rsync not to copy files after a i/o error?

• DVD RW: Are they still relevant for backups?

  Hello, With the availability of compact USB memory sticks with much, MUCH higher storage capacities is there still any use-case for taking periodic, incremental backups on DVD/RWs? The DVD/RW has an additional annoyance that you cannot drag and drop files to it as easily as you can on a USB memory stick. So, if I have a 4.7GB DVD/RW, I must re-burn the whole image every time I backup new stuff... with possibly rearranged file/folder structure. Secondly, why in this day and age you cannot install a file-system (like ext3 or FAT32) on a DVD/RW... and likewise on CD/RW's as you can on a USB memory stick? Many thanks, /HS

• Mount Docker container contents in host file system

  I want to be able to inspect the contents of a Docker container (read-only). An elegant way of doing this would be to mount the container's contents in a directory. I'm talking about mounting the contents of a container on the host, not about mounting a folder on the host inside a container. I can see that there are two storage drivers in Docker right now: aufs and btrfs. My own Docker install uses btrfs, and browsing to /var/lib/docker/btrfs/subvolumes shows me one directory per Docker container on the system. This is however an implementation detail of Docker and it feels wrong to mount --bind these directories somewhere else. Is there a proper way of doing this, or do I need to patch Docker to support these kinds of mounts?

• Good books or tutorials on building projects without an IDE?

  While I'm certainly under no illusions that building software without an IDE is possible, I don't actually know much about doing it well. I've been using graphical tools like Visual Studio or Code::Blocks so long that I'm pretty well lost without them. And that really stinks when I want to change environments or languages. I couldn't really do anything in D until someone made a Visual Studio plugin, and now that I'm trying to do more development on Mac, I can't use D again because the XCode plugins don't work. I'm sick of being lost when I see a .make file and having no idea what I'm supposed to do with a folder full of source files. People can't be compiling them one by one using the console and then linking them one by one. You'd spend more time typing file names than code. So what are the automation and productivity tools of the non-IDE user? How do you manage a project when you're writing all the code in emacs or vim or nano or whatever? I would love it if there was a book or a guide online that spells some of this out.

• List existing file server permission groups/users

  So we have taken over a new client and their existing file server is frankly a mess. We have migrated their old file server from a 2k box to a 2k8 DFS cluster and now I'm looking at rebuilding both the folder structure and their permissions. Unfortunately its been half done with AD groups (poorly named/no description/notes) and half with individuals named in security on the folders themselves. What I'm looking to do is to dump a complete list of all the folders with their security permissions (ideally I'd like to ignore files but not essential). CACLS got me half way there but fails with an odd error message and its output isn't particularly user friendly and I'm working with roughly 2Tb/250,000 files here so I really need something that gives me a bit more functionality. Question : does anyone have any experience of something similar/know of a bit of software that might help me out?

  Hi, I am using the free version for Google Apps to host my mail. I want to set is so that mail is routed via google apps as this will give me a much better reputation and mail will not go to the spam folder as much. Doe anyone know how this is done? Would I need to setup IIS to do this? The site is writeen in C# ASP.NET. So Could I perhaps just update the web.config file to route mail via google apps?

• How to disable the text shadow in plasma widgets KDE 4.6?

  I just switched completely to Kubuntu for the sake of the more suitable applications for my purposes and their overall integration in the system. But I'm not very happy with all those desktop effects and tranparent looks everywhere. Some things a matter of taste I guess. Some things just unbearable for me having weak eyes. One of them is that about every light theme seems to be using a text shadow effect on the plasma widgets. A white "spilled milk" effect underneath dark text on light grey or glassy background. Drives my eyes nuts! I can remove this effect on the desktop folder by unselecting "shadow" as text effect. I can't find any way to switch it of in the panel and the plasma widgets. My second, related question is, is there a plasma theme matching the oxygen look of the default desktop in light colors that uses the same colors as the ones chosen in the KDE color settings, - simple, opaque, no effects, gnome-like? • Monitor or log directory permission changes?

  I'm having an issue with a cPanel shared server running CentOS 5 where a few directories under the public_html folder keep getting changed to 777 from 755. The customer says they are not changing it and i'm wondering if there is a way to monitor these specific directories to find out who/what is changing the permissions. I have looked into using auditctl and after testing it and changing the permissions myself I don't see anything in the logs so i'm not sure if i'm doing it right or if it's even possible. Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas on how I could figure out what is changing the permissions? Thanks!!

• Deploying my first website!

  I have built a data driven website - an asp.net website, using the entity framework. In my solution I have 4 projects - the web application PresentationLayer, and 3 class libraries - Data Layer, Business and Common Layer. In one of these libraries, Common Layer I have my Model (MyModel.edmx). I have always tested my application on Cassini - Asp.Net Development Server. I have never touched IIS in my life. I bought a domain and hosting on go daddy. My logic tells me to grab my four folders (1 for each layer) and simply move them to the root folder. But I know I'm wrong since then the home page would be mywebsite.org/presentationlayer/default.aspx and second of all I start getting a bunch of errors where files do not load or they are not found. I also know that I need to manage the web.config but I don't have any experience where to start. I'm not sure if this is a problem but I also have a web service included in my presentation layer.
