• Partner Blog Series: PwC Perspectives Part 2 - Jumpstarting your IAM program with R2

- by Tanu Sood
Identity and access management (IAM) isn’t a new concept. Over the past decade, companies have begun to address identity management through a variety of solutions that have primarily focused on provisioning. . The new age workforce is converging at a rapid pace with ever increasing demand to use diverse portfolio of applications and systems to interact and interface with their peers in the industry and customers alike. Oracle has taken a significant leap with their release of Identity and Access Management 11gR2 towards enabling this global workforce to conduct their business in a secure, efficient and effective manner. As companies deal with IAM business drivers, it becomes immediately apparent that holistic, rather than piecemeal, approaches better address their needs. When planning an enterprise-wide IAM solution, the first step is to create a common framework that serves as the foundation on which to build the cost, compliance and business process efficiencies. As a leading industry practice, IAM should be established on a foundation of accurate data for identity management, making this data available in a uniform manner to downstream applications and processes. Mature organizations are looking beyond IAM’s basic benefits to harness more advanced capabilities in user lifecycle management. For any organization looking to embark on an IAM initiative, consider the following use cases in managing and administering user access. Expanding the Enterprise Provisioning Footprint Almost all organizations have some helpdesk resources tied up in handling access requests from users, a distraction from their core job of handling problem tickets. This dependency has mushroomed from the traditional acceptance of provisioning solutions integrating and addressing only a portion of applications in the heterogeneous landscape Oracle Identity Manager (OIM) 11gR2 solves this problem by offering integration with third party ticketing systems as “disconnected applications”. It allows for the existing business processes to be seamlessly integrated into the system and tracked throughout its lifecycle. With minimal effort and analysis, an organization can begin integrating OIM with groups or applications that are involved with manually intensive access provisioning and de-provisioning activities. This aspect of OIM allows organizations to on-board applications and associated business processes quickly using out of box templates and frameworks. This is especially important for organizations looking to fold in users and resources from mergers and acquisitions. Simplifying Access Requests Organizations looking to implement access request solutions often find it challenging to get their users to accept and adopt the new processes.. So, how do we improve the user experience, make it intuitive and personalized and yet simplify the user access process? With R2, OIM helps organizations alleviate the challenge by placing the most used functionality front and centre in the new user request interface. Roles, application accounts, and entitlements can all be found in the same interface as catalog items, giving business users a single location to go to whenever they need to initiate, approve or track a request. Furthermore, if a particular item is not relevant to a user’s job function or area inside the organization, it can be hidden so as to not overwhelm or confuse the user with superfluous options. The ability to customize the user interface to suit your needs helps in exercising the business rules effectively and avoiding access proliferation within the organization. Saving Time with Templates A typical use case that is most beneficial to business users is flexibility to place, edit, and withdraw requests based on changing circumstances and business needs. With OIM R2, multiple catalog items can now be added and removed from the shopping cart, an ecommerce paradigm that many users are already familiar with. This feature can be especially useful when setting up a large number of new employees or granting existing department or group access to a newly integrated application. Additionally, users can create their own shopping cart templates in order to complete subsequent requests more quickly. This feature saves the user from having to search for and select items all over again if a request is similar to a previous one. Advanced Delegated Administration A key feature of any provisioning solution should be to empower each business unit in managing their own access requests. By bringing administration closer to the user, you improve user productivity, enable efficiency and alleviate the administration overhead. To do so requires a federated services model so that the business units capable of shouldering the onus of user life cycle management of their business users can be enabled to do so. OIM 11gR2 offers advanced administrative options for creating, managing and controlling business logic and workflows through easy to use administrative interface and tools that can be exposed to delegated business administrators. For example, these business administrators can establish or modify how certain requests and operations should be handled within their business unit based on a number of attributes ranging from the type of request or the risk level of the individual items requested. Closed-Loop Remediation Security continues to be a major concern for most organizations. Identity management solutions bolster security by ensuring only the right users have the right access to the right resources. To prevent unauthorized access and where it already exists, the ability to detect and remediate it, are key requirements of an enterprise-grade proven solution. But the challenge with most solutions today is that some of this information still exists in silos. And when changes are made to systems directly, not all information is captured. With R2, oracle is offering a comprehensive Identity Governance solution that our customer organizations are leveraging for closed loop remediation that allows for an automated way for administrators to revoke unauthorized access. The change is automatically captured and the action noted for continued management. Conclusion While implementing provisioning solutions, it is important to keep the near term and the long term goals in mind. The provisioning solution should always be a part of a larger security and identity management program but with the ability to seamlessly integrate not only with the company’s infrastructure but also have the ability to leverage the information, business models compiled and used by the other identity management solutions. This allows organizations to reduce the cost of ownership, close security gaps and leverage the existing infrastructure. And having done so a multiple clients’ sites, this is the approach we recommend. In our next post, we will take a journey through our experiences of advising clients looking to upgrade to R2 from a previous version or migrating from a different solution. • 'ORA-01031: insufficient privileges' error received when inserting into a View

- by Patrick K
Under the user name 'MY_ADMIN', I have successfully created a table called 'NOTIFICATIONS' and a view called 'V_NOTIFICATIONS'. On the 'V_NOTIFICATIONS' view I have successfully created a trigger and a package that takes what the user attempts to insert into the view and inserts it into the table. The 'V_NOTIFICATIONS' trigger and package also perform the update and delete functions on the table when the user attempts to perform the update and delete functions on the view. I have done this with many views in the project I am currently working on, as many views sit over the top of many different tables, however when attempting to insert a record into this view I receive an 'ORA-01031: insufficient privileges' error. I am able to insert directly into the table using the same code that is in the package, but not into the view. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

• Convert xml as string

- by hakish
i have a scenario where in i need to send an xml as a tag content in a SOAP request message to a webservice for example <arg_1><xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><sometag><somemoretag>abcd</somemoretag></sometag></arg_1>
arg_1 happens to be an String parameter to a webservice. So i bring in a CDATA section for this <arg_1><xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><sometag><somemoretag>abcd</somemoretag></sometag></arg_1> But this keeps throwing me an exception org.xml.sax.SAXException: WSWS3084E: Error: SimpleDeserializer encountered a child element, which is NOT expected, in something it was trying to deserialize. Message being parsed: I keep getting this exception. Has anyone seen this before??

• Using truncate table alongside Hibernate?

- by Marcus
Is it OK to truncate tables while at the same time using Hibernate to insert data? We parse a big XML file with many relationships into Hibernate POJO's and persist to the DB. We are now planning on purging existing data at certain points in time by truncating the tables. Is this OK? It seems to work fine. We don't use Hibernate's second level cache. One thing I did notice, which is fine, is that when inserting we generate primary keys using Hibernate's @GeneratedValue where Hibernate just uses a key value one greater than the highest value in the table - and even though we are truncating the tables, Hibernate remembers the prior value and uses prior value + 1 as opposed to starting over at 1. This is fine, just unexpected. Note that the reason we do truncate as opposed to calling delete() on the Hibernate POJO's is for speed. We have gazillions of rows of data, and truncate is just so much faster.

• wm_concat function and small characer buffer

- by Ruslan
Hi, i have select like: select substr(account,1,4), currency, amount, module, count(*) quan, wm_concat(id) ids from all_transactions group by substr(account,1,4), currency, amount, module But sometimes COUNT(*) is more then 600. In that case i get: 'ORA-06502: PL/SQL: : character string buffer too small' Is there any way out to keep wm_concat(id) for all records? Because excluding this function for entries with big COUNT(*) is the way out.

• Fetch and bulk collect from a REF CURSOR returned by a procedure

- by Rachcha
I have a procedure that has a SYS_REFCURSOR as an OUT parameter. The signature is, for example, as follows: PROCEDURE myProc(p_someID IN INTEGER, p_cursor OUT SYS_REFCURSOR); I call this procedure from a function, where I have to copy a column named clientID from the p_cursor to a scalar nested table. I am doing as follows: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION myFunction RETURN sys_refcursor IS someID INTEGER := 1234; myCursor SYS_REFCURSOR; TYPE t_clientID_nt IS TABLE OF NUMBER(16,0); clientID_nt t_clientID_nt; otherID SYS_REFCURSOR; BEGIN myProc (someID, myCursor); FOR i IN myCursor LOOP clientID_nt.EXTEND; clientID_nt (clientID_nt.COUNT) := i.clientID; END LOOP; -- Other code that opens the cursor otherID -- based on the IDs in clientID_nt ... ... RETURN otherID; END; / When I try to compile this function, the error I get is: PLS-00221: 'CLIENTID_NT' is not a procedure or is undefined and it is at line 11 of the code. Any help on how to fetch and bulk collect from such a cursor is greatly appreciated.

• DBMS debugger causes TOAD to hang

- by James Collins
I can start the dbms debugger in Toad and use it normally but if I hit the 'halt execution' button or just hit the 'Run' button to reach the end of the function it causes TOAD to hang. Windows reports it as not responding and I have to kill it through the task manager. I have had this problem in Toad 9.7.2.5 and Toad 10 on two different laptops. Has anyone else experienced this problem? If you have did you find a solution to this?

• Global Temporary Table Concurrency

- by sahs
Hi, I have a global temp table which is set as delete on commit. How does it behave on concurrency issue? I mean what happens if another session wants to use that global temporary table? The answer will probably not be "they share the same data". Now, if my guess is correct :), is the table locked until the first connection commits, or does the dbms create a global temp table for each connection? ( something like an instance of the table? )

• Package creation issues using SQL Developer

- by Carter
So I've never worked with stored procedures and have not a whole lot of DB experience in general and I've been assigned a task that requires I create a package and I'm stuck. Using SQL Developer, I'm trying to create a package called JUMPTO with this code... create or replace package JUMPTO is type t_locations is ref cursor; procedure procGetLocations(locations out t_locations); end JUMPTO; When I run it, it spits out this PL/SQL code block... DECLARE LOCATIONS APPLICATION.JUMPTO.t_locations; BEGIN JUMPTO.PROCGET_LOCATIONS( LOCATIONS = LOCATIONS ); -- Modify the code to output the variable -- DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE('LOCATIONS = ' || LOCATIONS); END; A tutorial I found said to take out the comment for that second line there. I've tried with and without the comment. When I hit "ok" I get the error... ORA-06550: line 2, column 32: PLS-00302: component 'JUMPTO' must be declared ORA-06550: line 2, column 13: PL/SQL: item ignored ORA-06550: line 6, column 18: PLS-00320: the declaration of the type of this expression is incomplete or malformed ORA-06550: line 5, column 3: PL/SQL: Statement ignored ORA-06512: at line 58 I really don't have any idea what's going on, this is all completely new territory for me. I tried creating a body that just selected some stuff from the database but nothing is working the way it seems like it should in my head. Can anyone give me any insight into this?

• Spring Security - is Role and ACL security overkill?

- by HDave
I have a 3 tier application that requires security authorizations be placed on various domain objects. Whether I use Spring's ACL implementation or roll my own, it seems to me that ACL based security can only be used to authorize (service) methods and cannot be used to authorize URL or web service invocations. I think this because how could a web service call check the ACL before it has hydrated the XML payload? Also, all the examples for web access security in the Spring documentation are securing URL's based on Role. Is it typical to use Spring's roles to secure web presentation and web service calls, while at the same time using ACL's to secure the business methods? Is this overkill?

• optimizing operating systems to provide maximum informix performance.

- by Frank Developer
Are there any Informix-specific guides for optimizing any operating system where an ifx engine is running? For example, in Linux, strip-down to a bare minimum all unecessary binaries, daemons, utilities, tune kernel parameters, optimize raw and cooked devices (hdparm). Someday, maybe, informix can create its own proprietary PICK-like O/S. The general idea is for the OS where ifx sits on have the smallest footprint, lowest overhead impact on ifx and provide optimized ifx performance.

• DATE lookup table (1990/01/01:2041/12/31)

- by Frank Developer
I use a DATE's master table for looking up dates and other values in order to control several events, intervals and calculations within my app. It has rows for every single day begining from 01/01/1990 to 12/31/2041. One example of how I use this lookup table is: A customer pawned an item on: JAN-31-2010 Customer returns on MAY-03-2010 to make an interest pymt to avoid forfeiting the item. If he pays 1 months interest, the employee enters a "1" and the app looks-up the pawn date (JAN-31-2010) in date master table and puts FEB-28-2010 in the applicable interest pymt date. FEB-28 is returned because FEB-31's dont exist! If 2010 were a leap-year, it would've returned FEB-29. If customer pays 2 months, MAR-31-2010 is returned. 3 months, APR-30... If customer pays more than 3 months or another period not covered by the date lookup table, employee manually enters the applicable date. Here's what the date lookup table looks like: { Copyright 1990:2010, Frank Computer, Inc. } { DBDATE=YMD4- (correctly sorted for faster lookup) } CREATE TABLE datemast ( dm_lookup DATE, {lookup col used for obtaining values below} dm_workday CHAR(2), {NULL=Normal Working Date,} {NW=National Holiday(Working Date),} {NN=National Holiday(Non-Working Date),} {NH=National Holiday(Half-Day Working Date),} {CN=Company Proclamated(Non-Working Date),} {CH=Company Proclamated(Half-Day Working Date)} {several other columns omitted} dm_description CHAR(30), {NULL, holiday description or any comments} dm_day_num SMALLINT, {number of elapsed days since begining of year} dm_days_left SMALLINT, (number of remaining days until end of year} dm_plus1_mth DATE, {plus 1 month from lookup date} dm_plus2_mth DATE, {plus 2 months from lookup date} dm_plus3_mth DATE, {plus 3 months from lookup date} dm_fy_begins DATE, {fiscal year begins on for lookup date} dm_fy_ends DATE, {fiscal year ends on for lookup date} dm_qtr_begins DATE, {quarter begins on for lookup date} dm_qtr_ends DATE, {quarter ends on for lookup date} dm_mth_begins DATE, {month begins on for lookup date} dm_mth_ends DATE, {month ends on for lookup date} dm_wk_begins DATE, {week begins on for lookup date} dm_wk_ends DATE, {week ends on for lookup date} {several other columns omitted} ) IN "S:\PAWNSHOP.DBS\DATEMAST"; Is there a better way of doing this or is it a cool method?

• ORA-00904: "FORMAT": invalid identifier

- by gary A.K.A. G4
I am trying to format a date: FORMAT(table.TCKT.TCKT_ISS_DATE, 'YYYY') AS TICKETYEAR but I am getting the following error: ORA-00904: "FORMAT": invalid identifier Right now the date show the complete timestamp. Any suggestions on how to fix this problem, or any other way to format the date to just show the four digit year?
