• Is there a version of Debian-Lenny that is legal for export from the US?

  I wanted to bundle my application in a Debian-Lenny Virtual Machine so others could download it and run it without having to configure anything. However, I don't want to have to worry about US legal issues. Many of the packages in a default Debian installation include encryption algorithms. Are all default versions export-safe?    If not, is there an export-safe version?       If not, is there an easy way to make one?

• Radeon 9200 Driver?

  I've been using Linux for a while, but haven't really done more than installed programs. I have Ubuntu 12.04 with an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card. Ubuntu didn't recognize it during the install. All I want is a driver. Preferably the proprietary driver, but I'll settle for an open-source one if I need to. I went to the AMD support website, and whenever I click on the download link for "ATI Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver 8.28.8" I get redirected to the main AMD website. I tried this on Firefox, Chrome, even booted up my netbook and tried it on IE9. Does anybody have a download link? And if not, a link to download an open-source alternative? • No HDMI audio - Windows 8 - ASUS H81M-PLUS

  I have an issue with HDMI audio on Windows 8 using an ASUS H81M-PLUS motherboard (without an external GFX card). There are many forum posts advising you to go into playback devices and setting HDMI to be default - I have done this. To eliminate what works and what doesn't work: I have not been able to get sound from my HDTV using HDMI. I have used this HDMI cable with my PS3, so this cable should be fine. I am able to use the HDMI cable in extended mode, so that I have two monitors (including the TV), just no audio. This HDMI cable goes straight from the motherboard to the TV. Below I have included 'Device manager', and 'Playback Devices' (Sound). Device Manager Playback Devices, showing disabled and disconnected devices I am at a loss. I have uninstalled all drivers, and then rebooted and made windows look for the correct ones, made sure the HDMI device was default. Thanks, Paul

  I am trying to learn Clojure, which seems a good candidate for a successful LISP. I have no problem with the concepts, but now I would like to start actually doing something. Here it comes my problem. As I mainly do web stuff, I have been looking into existing frameworks, database libraries, templating libraries and so on. Often these libraries are heavily based on macros. Now, I like very much the possibility of writing macros to get a simpler syntax than it would be possible otherwise. But it definitely adds another layer of complexity. But it is hard to recognize what the structure is. What does the function timestamp return? Or is it a macro? Having all this freedom of writing my own syntax means that I have to learn other people's syntax for every library I want to use. How can I learn to use these components effectively? Am I supposed to learn each small DSL as a black box?

• Varnish doesn't seem to be caching

  I've setup a Varnish cache mirror to sit in front of a file server, but it seems to be endlessly re-downloading data from my file server. There's about 100GB of data in total, but so far Varnish has downloaded 800GB from my file server. • How can I set up OpenVPN to accept more than 60 connections?

  Greetings! We're using OpenVPN and today hit an unexpected connection limit of 60 - even though max-clients is set to the source code default 1024. • Location Services are always disabled in Mac OS X Lion

  A simple location services program was working fine on my machine and suddenly stopped working. Upon further exploring the problem, I realized that some process has disabled location services in System Preferences » Security & Privacy » Privacy. I checked Enable Location Services, but again it got disabled automatically. After some research I found that it's not just my program, even built-in system functions are also failing because of this problem for example System Preferences » Date & Time » Time Zone failed to get the current location. • How do I stop Outlook from stealing mailto protocol from Gmail?

  In Chrome, when I click on a mailto: link, I'd like to be taken to my Gmail's Compose window. So I downloaded ChromeMailer and it works relatively well. However, after using Outlook 2010, the default for the mailto reverts to Outlook. I went into Outlook's Options, clicked Default Programs... and was greeted with this: As you can see, the checkbox is grayed out and I can't do anything to changed it. Clicking Select All checkbox does nothing either. How do I stop Outlook from stealing the mailto protocol handler?

• Problems with Intel Video Resolution on Acer Laptop Wide Display

  I have an ACER Aspire 5332 laptop which I have just installed Ubuntu 12.04 x64, which is causing some issues with the video display on boot and video resolution. First and foremost, it will only boot past the purple screen if GRUB has been edited to replace 'quick splash' with 'nomodeset'. Secondly, once it has booted with the the 'nomodeset' option, it does not allow me to change the resolution higher or lower from 1024 x 786. Is it OK to use the 'nomodeset' for normal use? Will this compromise performance of other devices? The video card is an on-board one, integrated within the Intel GL40 chip-set. The display is a wide-screen LCD, and under Windows could operate under various resolutions. Ideally I would like it to operate on a resolution to fit the wide-screen display as it a bit stretched out at the moment, and less desktop space as I am used to. I believe the optimal resolution is 1366 x 768. • Configuring subdomains for a machine (Win2k8) in a lan

  I am currently setting up a windows 2008 server to host a website with multiple subdomains, all accessible only within the lan. also, there is no active directory. what I did is : 1 - computer name : 'web' 2 - in IIS, I added a site binding as 'site1.web' to the default web site 3 - added DNS role to the server 4 - added 'web' as principal zone in direct lookup zones (default options) 5 - added CNAME 'site1' From a client machine, in tcpip config I added the ip address of 'web' to the DNS list in addition to the ISP DNS. (client machine ip is from DHCP) Now browsing to 'http://web' or 'http://site1.web' works correctly. My question is, is it possible throught additional steps in the server to have the websites accessible without requiring the DNS config in all the client machines ? thanks in advance

• USB device is recognized but has no address

  Good day folks, I'm trying to use a USRP1 with GNURadio if anyone knows what any of that is. I am running Ubuntu on a Windows 7 machine via VMware player. When I connect this USRP1 via USB 2.0 drive to Windows 7 it is recognized as Ettus Research LLC USRP1... When I connect the device to Ubuntu through VMware, it shows: usb device fffe:0002 on my removable devices. When I run lsusb I receive the following: Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub Bus 002 Device 002: ID 0e0f:0003 VMware, Inc. Virtual Mouse Bus 002 Device 003: ID 0e0f:0002 VMware, Inc. Virtual USB Hub Bus 001 Device 004: ID fffe:0002 When I run this program that comes with the USRP driver... uhd_find_devices I receive: -------------------------------------------------- -- UHD Device 0 -------------------------------------------------- Device Address: type: usrp1 name: serial: 00000000 So when I run this program, it does recognize the fact that this device is connected. However, the device has no address, no name, and has a null serial. I need to know the device address so I can run more programs in GNURadio. Does anyone know what the problem is here? Thanks!

• scary islamic messages on mouse in libreoffice - a virus?

  This is weird. Today I opened an excel file with libre office. Suddenly I saw the mouse changed color, and stuck to it was a message in Arabic, which changed every second in a loop. I can actually read Arabic so I immediatly recognized it as Islamic messages praising Allah (including the Takbir). Here's a screenshot: At first I thought this was something with the file, but then I saw that this happens with any libre office program (but only libre-office programs), and even when they're open, it only changes the mouse when it's hovering over the libre program, and goes back to normal anywhere else. Also, re-installing did not help. I tried running software updater - but I got an error where it couldn't load some steam repositories, but that seems like a coincidence: Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en_US Failed to fetch http://repo.steampowered.com/steam/dists/precise/steam/i18n/Translation-en Here's another hint - I tried taking several screenshots of several messages, but they all ended up showing the same message (the one above). Hopefully that means anything. I should note I haven't installed anything fishy lately, and I hardly ever use libre office at all (I prefer Google Drive whenever I need to work with documents), so I'm really unsure as to how this happened. Anyway, this is scary. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• IPv4 private address assignment

  I'm working on a private network which uses static IPv4 addresses as well as DHCP addressing for the physical LAN network. At a previous company I worked at they would assign static addresses in the 10.*.*.* space and all DHCP/LAN addresses were assigned in the 192.168.*.* space. Both of these address spaces are defined in the IPv4 private address space and there were never any internal conflicts. From personal experience at home, school, at work, and pretty much any other machine I've dealt with extensively (Windows and a few Linux distros), the DHCP server would always by default choose an address from the 192.168.*.* address space. Now my question is can I rely on this behavior? Do DHCP servers always by default assign from the 192.168.*.* pool (or any pool other than the 10.*.*.* pool), leaving the 10.*.*.* pool free for private static addressing? If not, under what conditions might a DHCP server choose an address in the 10.*.*.* address space?

• How to combine wildcards and spaces (quotes) in an Windows command?

  I want to remove directories of the following format: C:\Program Files\FogBugz\Plugins\cache\[email protected]_NN NN is a number, so I want to use a wildcard (this is part of a post-build step in Visual Studio). The problem is that I need to combine quotes around the path name (for the space in Program Files) with a wildcard to match the end of the path. I already found out that rd is the remove command that accepts wildcards, but where do I put the quotes? I have tried no ending quote (works for dir), ...example.com*", ...example.com"*, ...example.com_??", ...cache\"[email protected]*, ...cache"\[email protected]*, but none of them work. (How many commands to remove a file/directory are there in Windows anyway? And why do they all differ in capabilities?)

• Windows 2003 and 2008 AD integrated DNS zones

  We have a Windows 2003 server DC1 which is our primary DC holding all FSMO roles. It also is a DNS server for our domain domain.local which is an active directory integrated zone. We also have a Windows 2008 DC name DC2 All servers have the correct DNS entries etc. However on all dns servers there are event id 4515 indicating there are duplicate zones in separate directory partitions and only one will be used until the other is removed. And I see these, there is a zone for domain.local under the default naming partition CN=System, CN=MicrosoftDNS, DC=domain.local. As well as the DomainDNSZones partition DC=DomainDNSZones, DC=DOMAIN, DC=local, CN=MicrosoftDNS It seems that the partition in the Default Naming partition is the one which is being used currently. • How to disable visual effects and compiz 100%

  UPDATE 1: The problem is not a monitor refresh rate flickering problem, as then the whole screen would be flickering. For me, only the application windows flicker in and out of view, then most of the time, when there do decide to show themselves, they only partly show themselves, like just top half, bottom half, left half, corner missing, window disappears when you try moving it or mouse over it even etc etc. I know it is a visual effect problem as I know my computer cannot handle visual effects and for some reason when the windows do appear partly, I can see the shadows behind the windows. Those shadows are part of the visual effects which are turned on by default for some reason. I get the same problem with 10.04, but can quickly turn off the visual effects by right clicking the desktop, selecting change background image, and in the visual effects tab, I can click on none, which stops all the visual problems. ORIGINAL QUESTION: I am having problems with 11.04 on my computer. For some reason it is enabling visual effects by default in the live cd when it should not be as my computer cannot support such effects. My computer cannot support Unity either, but it defaults to standard gnome with visual effects for some reason. It should be defaulting to standard gnome with no visual effects. THerefore, all I get is a very flickery live cd which makes it very difficult to see anything. So my question is, how do I disable the visual effects from the live cd? To put it simply, the live cd flickering is so bad, that I had to log back into my standard 10.04 install just to write this question, as I just couldn't see enough of the screen because of the flickering in 11.04 to even get to askubuntu.com...

  Hello, I'm using apt-get install to install various software on my PC. I have a handful of PCs that needs the same software packages installed all over them. How can I get list of software installed via apt-get install and the sequence in what the packages are installed. Okay, the sequence is not so important since the package manager resolves dependencies... I want to create a script that once run installs all needed software on the other PCs. All of these PCs are Ubuntu default installations. It is obvious that the packages list must not include all the packages that are installed trough a default installation :) Also that list should not contain software installed via synaptic or dpkg if possible.

Any web service support three kinds of protocol HttpGet,HttpPost and SOAP. In framework 1.0 it was enabled by default but after 1.0 framework it will not be enabled by default due to security issues and WS-Specifications.   Since most operating systems I've heard of besides Windows seem to derive their heritage from Unix, I've been curious whether any OS's with the following characteristics exist: Not generally considered Unix-like, i.e. wasn't designed with Unix compatibility as a primary goal, doesn't use X11 as its default GUI in the most common distributions, doesn't support Unix commands by default, etc. Not in the Windows NT family. Is a modern production operating system, not a purely legacy operating system, a research/hobby project or an OS that's still in an alpha state. Is targeted at commodity x86/x64 PC hardware.
