  • I have bluescreen-phobia

    I'm scared of the Blue Screen of Death. Seriously. Whenever I hibernate or shutdown my computer, I have to turn the screen off in case it bluescreens during that process. Whenever I see a bluescreen, it makes my heart skip a beat and I jump a little - especially if it's on my own computer. I decided that this is getting ridiculous after I experienced a BSOD this evening. My computer booted back up and I decided to switch off the screen and leave the room. I came back about a minute later and it still hadn't got to the login screen. To find out what happened, I actually covered the screen with two A4 pages and gradually peeled them back after I saw that the screen wasn't blue. This is going way too far, but I can't help it. I am legitimately afraid of BSODs. Does anyone have any advice on how I can help myself?

  • ESXi hard drive power saving

    I currently have a Windows Server running beneath my desk and was considering replacing it with a ESXi layer to run both a Windows and Unix virtual machine. The ESXi is going to give me some nice advantages that I can use but I am still stuck on this issue: The server is mainly used as a fileserver/local webserver, and I use Windows tasks to hibernate/wake the machine at night. Also there is an aggressive disk spin down timeout to reduce noise. With ESXi, this will not be possible to do any more. I could live with the server running 24/7, but I would really like to spin down the disks when not in use. Is there a way to do this on ESXi?

  • Whys is System process listening on Port 80?

    I am running Windows 7 RC1. I have multiple issues getting IIS to work on my system and today when I installed a new application and I tried to load it using http:\localhost\MyApplication I get absolutely no errors and I get no page load. Just a pretty, white blank page. I did some digging and I found something about some other process listening on port 80 so I did a scan using netstat -aon | findstr 0.0:80 and discovered that PID 4 was listening on that port. PID 4 does not show in task manager so I fired up Process Explorer and it showed me that PID 4 is the System process. (Multiple google searches seems to indicate that System always uses PID 4). Since then I am basically stuck. I have no idea why System needs port 80 and what to do about it. If you google the following strings you will find two helpful Experts-Exchange articles at the top of the search results and you can read them for some helpful information. (If I gave the direct URL to the pages then Experts-Exchange would ask you to pay...but when you click on the results from a google search you can scroll all of the way to the bottom to read the exchanges.) Here are the google searches... "System Process is listening on port 80 (Vista)" "SYSTEM Process is listening on Port 80 and Preventing IIS Default Website from Running" The last entry from the first result showed how to do a trace of http.sys at the following URL: http://blogs.msdn.com/wndp/archive/2007/01/18/event-tracing-in-http-sys-part-1-capturing-a-trace.aspx Trace showed nothing useful. Any thoughts?

  • fedora12, yum not releasing "lock" after performing an action

    Hello, This problem has been occurring quite frequently recently and I can't seem to find a way of preventing it.   • Windows Start Menu Not Staying on Top

    Hey everyone. I've had this problem since Windows Vista. I did a clean install with Windows 7 and hoped it would fix the problem. Also swapped out the video card just to rule out a strange driver issue. Here's what's happening. After running for some period of time (usually a few hours), the Start button/orb will loose it's "Chrome" and turn into a plain button that just says "Start." It will work fine for a while, but then the start menu will just stop showing. Additionally, when I hit Win+D to show the desktop, the entire taskbar completely disappears. I can get it back usually by moving/minimizing windows that may be overlapping where the start menu should show. Otherwise, it requires either a full reboot or I'll end up killing & restarting the explorer.exe process.     Hello, I'm getting following error when using Hibernate in a Java application over my DB2 database. This error occurs with one DB2 database and not with another (I'm almost sure the problem is in DB2 server side configuration), and I didn't found the difference between the two databases. The SQL error -443 is missing from the documentation I found: http:// rikipedia.co.za/index.php/DB2_SQL_Error_Codes (one link maximum per question due to reputation) According to following link, the 111 part of the sql state 38111 would indicate the reason of the failure. http://www.sqlerror.de/db2_sql_error_-443_sqlstate_42724.html Any idea ?
