• Windows 7 crashes with STOP 0x101 ("A clock interrupt was not received..") every time the laptop tri

  I have an HP Compaq nc8430 with a new install of Windows 7 (32 bit). Every time I sleep the laptop, it crashes. It also crashes sometimes just during normal use. It does hibernate properly. The only reliable trigger I've found to crash it is sleep mode. It's not overclocked, and only standard drivers are installed. It seems to always be the following error: A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor within the time interval. And the following STOP code: STOP: 0x00000101 (0x00000061, 0x00000000, 0x80DBF120, 0X00000001) I'm not sure it's always the same parameters exactly, but always seems to be error 101. Given the text of the error message, I've disabled the Dual Core option in BIOS, and this appears to have fixed it - no crashes so far, and it sleeps ok now. However, I'd love a solution that doesn't involve cutting processor performance in half. Any suggestions?

• Backup Gmail using Mail.app and IMAP without redundancy

  I don't care for actually using mail app, I use mostly the gmail interface and mail app just for offline, for quickly reading and eventually replying. Everything is working fine, I think I've followed every guide out there... Here's a great one. But I could find nothing about avoiding redundancy. Well, I can manually do that either by using POP or by checking off most of my labels out of IMAP. But I do use a lot of labels and I often label messages with more than 1 label. And I want them on mail app. Is there anyway to make it keep just 1 copy of repeated messages? Maybe there's a message id or checksum that could be used... If there isn't a way to do it, be assured I still prefer having the extra messages and "wasting" space rather than not having any. edit: I've came across many solutions for finding duplicate files, but they just delete the files. That just make things worst: Mail will just sync it all again. I've realized it's probably better to keep two accounts setup, POP for backup and IMAP for everything else with removing the "All Mail" from it. That's because if the "All Mail" on the server is deleted for any reason, my "All Mail" local will also get deleted, while POP will keep all files regardless of the server. This doesn't solve the redundancy issue at all, but it doesn't create any new issue as well, and I can even use the search properly, without duplicated results, if I search just on the POP. So it helps optimizing a little bit. But I still think the best way to solve this issue would be having something such as aamann's Mail Scripts tweaked to hardlinking the duplicates rather than deleting, and optimized to not need to scan everything every time. I'm trying to contact him and see what we can do. At any pace, I'm still looking for an answer!

• Blank Icon in Control Panel?

  Hi all, Just recently I opened my Control Panel and saw that a blank icon came up before my list of icons. Has anyone else experienced this before? Would it be safe to delete it? Thanks in advance. EDIT: Oops, I should have mentioned this too, but when I try creating a shortcut on the desktop, I get a dialog box saying "Windows could not create the shortcut. Check if the disk is full." Clearly it isn't, since I still have 102 GB of free hard disk space... any ideas? EDIT2: Here is a screenie of my complete Control Panel: EDIT3: *So I did a manual search for .CPL in Windows Search and then looked at the list in TweakUI and got 3 unmatched .CPL files. They are [ncpa.CPL], [sapi.CPL], and [QuickTime.CPL]. I clearly know the QuickTime one, but not too sure about the rest. SCRATCH THAT, I FIGURED IT OUT... BUT IT'S NOT THE BLANK ICON.

• why does chkdsk always report errors on a bad shutdown

  Once in a while, Windows XP hangs on my laptop (usually when going into standby or hibernate and occasionally on startup) and I have to forcefully poweroff. Ususally chkdsk never runs automatically (I thought it should know that the partitions have nit been unmounted and do that). I religiously run chkdsk without /F after bad shutdowns like this, and invariably it reports that the drive has unfixed errors and must be checked with /F and I do that, and more often than not, the chdsk that runs on startup does not report fixing anything. I have had times in the past (and not only just on this system) when not running chkdsk leads to some strange errors like files not opening even though they exist and inability to save certain files, so I make it a point to always chkdsk after bad shutdown. I never understood why this is : Isnt the whole point of a journalling filesystem like NTFS to avoid file system corruption and endless chkdsks? I even tried once disabling write caching to see if it made any difference, but to no avail....

I have a custom LDAP server, which I can customize to generate whichever object class and attributes I need. I'm trying to display people from that server in the Mac OS X address book. Names and organizations display correctly, as well as work-related phone and address. However, I've never been able to have a home address displayed in the address book.   I don't mean anonymous surfing. I mean hosting and having your own domain and such. The reason is that my blog is about religious/political topics which may cause me trouble in the future. This is the domain I am working on: www.james-croft.com I know that using Whois search my name can come up: http://www.networksolutions.com/whois-search/james-croft.com The solution to that, as far as I understood, is to buy a privacy package from the domain registrar. in my case it is lucky register: http://i.stack.imgur.com/uvOdc.png Also hosting is a concern. I use the same hosting service for multiple websites. My question is this: Can my hosting be tracked and be used to identify me? Also: Are there other methods of finding out my identity from either Google Adsense or Amazon affiliate programs? I couldn't find any relevant articles online.   I'm trying to do a global replace of search in my database, which has a lot of articles with a double carriage return because of this code: <p> </p> I'd like to replace this in my WordPress blog so instead of that appears... nothing, and so I can delete the CR. I've tried this on my database UPDATE wp_posts set post_content = replace (post_content,'<p> </p>',''); but didn't work. Why? Do I have to add special thinks to consider the space between the <p>and the</p>? Mmm. Good points, both Jon Angliss and Wim. Jon, as you could have guessed, the database shows no entries with that text string. So there's something going on inside the post_content field. Wim, the famous   was replaced previously, but there are still hundreds of posts that for some reason have something different between the p and the /p tags.   I have been doing some reading about CPU clock speeds and how CPU clock speeds are calculated. After reading several articles, I have come to the understanding that your CPU clock speed is determined by: CPU clock speed = cpu multiplier x mobo clock speed A few questions came about after reading this which I cannot seem to find the answer to anywhere: If the CPU clock speed is dependent upon the mobo clock speed, then how is the clock speed of the CPU predetermined upon buying the CPU (i.e. written on the box without knowing what mobo is being used)? After installation, does the CPU adjust it's multiplier based upon the mobo clock speed to achieve advertised speeds? For example, if the CPU clocks speed is advertised at 2.4GHz and the mobo clock speed is 100MHz, will the multiplier be automatically set to 24x? Why does mobo clock speed seem to not be very important / talked about? For example, when I search on Newegg, mobo clock speed never seems to be listed. When I search enthusiast forums and overclocking forums, mobo clock speed is rarely mentioned. To me, it seems like the mobo clock speed would be pretty important. If I am understanding things correctly, a lower mobo clock speed means that you CPU must work harder to achieve advertised clock speeds. I guess that I should stop there with the questions for now, as I may be asking my questions based on incorrect assumptions. Thanks!

  I'm sure everyone has experienced it - if you leave a computer on too long, every once in a while, it needs a fresh reboot. I have a laptop, and I only hibernate it, but every week or two, I'm going to need to restart otherwise it will just slow down (usually when windows update makes me restart) I was wondering though... why? What are some of the things that occur that eat up memory that can seemingly not be freed unless I reboot the OS. In addition, are there any programs I can get that can free up this memory and keep the computer alive for longer? Preferably for windows 7.

  I always Hibernate my PC. Sometimes when I boot, it does not recognize the mouse/keyboard or any USB devices. I've also setup it to go in sleep in 5 minutes. In that case I can't restart the PC so that USB starts working. When I press the Power button then it starts shutdown but asks confirmation twice, one is for shutdown by force confirmation and then there is one more. When my USB is disabled I can't input these options. So I switch off the power. • Alternatives to Splunk?

  I'm pretty impressed with Splunk, especially version 4. Pretty graphs, alerting (Enterprise only), and fast, accurate, searching. It's a great product. However, the cost just way too high to consider for full production use for our company. All we really need is to be able to index different logs in a central place, and have reasonable searching on that. Having alerts based on a saved search is also really nice. We don't really go beyond that. In fact, our biggest usage has been in deploying new applications. Everything gets logged via log4net to either the Event log on Windows or a text file on Linux. Splunk makes it pretty easy to quickly search across those to make sure all the parts of the app are working ok -- that's saved us tons of time versus hunting down individual logging sources. What alternatives exist in this market? I have a sinking feeling Splunk's pricing is so high because they have the best product by far, and they know it. We want the server to run on Windows. I'd be open to a split model, using one product for general logs (collect via syslog/Snare), and a dedicated product for our custom apps (like Log4Net Dashboard). Would using a simple syslog server such as Kiwi, sent to SQL Server (perhaps with fulltext enabled) work? I'd hope the cost should be well under 5 figures, USD. (And yes, I know, we're cheap. We're a startup with little money, and BizSpark takes care of all our MS licensing.) Edit: I should add, we have about 10 physical servers, 20 VMs, and a couple firewalls and switches. 90% is Windows.

  Why every change in Asus UX50v causes screen resolution get lost? Installing a new application, connecting to another wireless network, change some settings, ... causes this problem. For example after installing an application, UX50v needs to restart. And when it got restarted, resolution would be set to 640x480(or 600x800) and Hibernate and Sleep options are disappeared from shutdown menu! (I have other problems with this Asus UX50v crap too - like I can't update windows 7 because it crashes on Asus UX50v crap - but this one is absolutely ridiculous and stupid!)

• Workstations cannot see new MS Server 2008 domain, but can access DHCP.

  The XP Pro workstations do not see the new replacement domain upon boot; they only see their cached entry for the old (server 2003) domain controller. The old_server is not connected to the network. I have DHCP working with the same scope as the old_server. The DC netbios is city01 while the domain's FQDN is city.domain.org (I think this is mistaken and should have been just domain.org) But, the second link led me to a post which I believe answers my question. I did as they instructed by opening Local Area Connection Properties, then selecting TCP/IPv4 and setting the sole preferred DNS server to the local hosts static IP (10.10.1.1). I am hoping to reach the point where I can define users and user groups. Also, does TechNet have a single theoretical overview document I could read. I really don't like treating comps as magic. So, I went and setup LDAP on a couple of my debian VMs, using libpam-ldapd and I discovered this odd problem. • Dual booting Linux/Win7, Grub refuses to load Win7

  Decided to give Linux Mint a try (Ubuntu's interface annoys me), so I installed it with the intention of dual booting with Windows 7. Installation went fine, but now I can only boot into Linux Mint. Grub lists two Windows 7 menu options, but selecting either of them causes an "unknown file system" error and dumps me into a Grub recovery prompt. There, I have to manually reset the root and prefix options, as they reset hd0,msdos6 when they should be hd0,msdos5. I ran Boot Repair twice, once to fix grub errors, once to rebuild the MBR, but it didn't fix anything. • Wake On Lan for Fedora 12

  I have a fedora 12 box that I am using as a sandbox for web development and a few other toys. The box gets really hot so I would like it to sleep/hibernate when no one is using it, however most of the people connecting to the box will not be able to access it physically. Is it possible to set up a Wake On Lan that wakes up the machine when it detects an SSH connection? A google search didn't yield much information. (or atleast I wasn't smart enough to register it as useful!)

• Spotlight can't see anything in Applications

  There have been other threads on this but none of the solutions mentioned have helped me. Spotlight has stopped showing any results for my Applications. I've tried reindexing and removing the index so it rebuilds it. No change. I've tried adding Applications to the Privacy tab and removing it, no change. I tried repairing disk permissions and redoing the above, no change. I've tried removing everything from the index except Applications and then I just get nothing for any search at all (except dictionary entries). I tried adding a symlink in my homedir to Applications and reindexing, but no change. Any ideas on what to do? I'm running Snow Leopard. This is driving me crazy! Update: I've noticed that when I start a reindex with sudo mdutil -E / and then immediately do a spotlight search for an app that the app shows up temporarily until spotlight gets disabled due to active indexing. After the indexing is done the app entries go away.

  I have a Windows 7 system that currently has a single update pending: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems If I try to install the update, Windows Update will: Create a restore point Fail with the error: Code 9C48 Windows Update encountered an error. The event log for the event reads: Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x80070643: Windows Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems. If you search the web for that error, there are many other people with the exact same issue. Sadly, I am unable to apply the proposed solutions to my case, because I just installed this system. There is nothing on it, except Windows 7. I installed the system and ran through the updates. I also did the exact same process with this machine several times over the past few days due to a long-term test we just started. I didn't have any problems with any Windows Update on the previous installation runs and I know I didn't do anything different this time because I followed the installation procedures instructions which are to be used during the test. How did this happen and how do I solve it? Further Investigation So, as I always like to do, I ran the update again while running Process Monitor and dug up further details. WindowsUpdate.log First of all, there is a Windows Update log file located at C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log which I didn't know about. • Error occurs when Win 7 opens

  I have an HP customized laptop barely a week old. Since yesterday it has given me an error message while opening Windows- every time. it gives error code (0x40000015) refers to an exception at location (0x0033fa4d). I have 64 bit Win 7 and had been transferring files. And installing programs. 8 GB Ram 650 gb hard drive. Not sure which program caused this. Q's that I've seen with this error code all say it occurs while shutting down. A search re. error code told me to use a removal tool. When I downloaded the tool,I got a message saying it is not compatible with Windows 7. Is that really possible? Search re. location code yielded nothing I am an intermediate user. I can restore to an earlier time but I don't know which program might do this again.

  I have a lenovo X1 that I am looking to dual boot windows and ubuntu on. I am having an issue. The disk came with 4 partitions SYSTEM_DRV, Windows C:, Lenovov Recovery, Hibernate Partition I have a SSD (250 gb) I have shrunk Windows C: so that I have 100gb of unallocated space. My plan was to install ubuntu on that. But when I try to create a new partition to install ubuntu on. Windows is saying I have to convert to a dynamic disk. I don't really understand the difference between Dyanimc and Basic disk but a quick search I am assuming I dont want to do this as I boot from this disk? Any suggestions on what I can do to dual boot? Thanks

  We host many websites on one of our two virtual servers. We use tomcat 6 and Java 6. It is an MVC model with a hibernate like layer. The problem is, one of our biggest clients with the most number of members, keeps crashing the server every 6-8 hours(precisely in the mornings when most members login) We have been having this issue for 4 days now. Trying to figure out the problem but we suspect memory leaks. Any suggestions?

• Why does this monitor go to sleep but won't wake up, event though all related power options are turned off?

  We have a machine, Windows 7 (64-bit) with ASUS motherboard, in our building that only sometimes seems to go to sleep, but won't wake up. The machine is still running but shaking the mouse or hitting keys on the keyboard won't wake it up. I have tried for days to isolate the problem, but every time we get to a "let's try this" scenario, it happens again, later. All power options related to display being off are set to never, except the simple, "turn display off after..." setting. That is, the hard drive is set to never turn off, and the computer is set to never sleep nor hibernate. All drivers seem to be up to date, but I am afraid I will hose the machine if I do a BIOS update (plus I figured that will probably have nothing to do with the issue and only make something else break). Wasn't sure if there was something obvious I was missing?

• Nexus functionality is limited after installation

  I have a CentOS based server with Sonatype Nexus 2.0.4-1 installed. The issue is that there are no standard "Artifact Search", "Advanced Search", "Browse Index", "Refresh Index" Nexus features, as well as Artifact Information tab after selection of any artifact (only Maven Information tab). I tried to Google, but was amazed that there're no information about this issue. • How do I find funny pictures?

  No, not lolcats. And I'm not really looking for a specific site, either. I have often wished that I had some funny picture to illustrate a presentation, a website, a post, an email, or something else. Google image search and stock photo services have hardly ever helped me, although that may be because I'm doing something wrong. Jeff Atwood seems to have no problem to find funny pictures for his codinghorror and stackoverflow blogs, as well as for the error messages on the trilogy sites. One of my favourites was this elephant. Other bloggers also seem to be quite good at it. I'm wondering if I simply lack the creativity or if there's sources or methods I don't know about. I could think of the following ways to get pictures, but I'm not sure whether this is really "how they do it". keep a collection of pictures that you stumbled upon and liked (takes quite some time to build up to a proper library), when you need a picture, there's one in there maybe have pictures on paper, too, like from magazines or ads. when you are looking for a picture, search online (Flickr, Google, stock photos). This has never really worked for me, I don't know why. produce the pictures yourself, i. e. have a good library of source material or find some online and apply some creativity and suitable software. I could imagine that this could work well once you have the practice.
