• SSIS – Delete all files except for the most recent one

  Quite often one or more sources for a data warehouse consist of flat files. Most of the times these files are delivered as a zip file with a date in the file name, for example FinanceDataExport_20100528.zip Currently I work at a project that does a full load into the data warehouse every night. A zip file with some flat files in it is dropped in a directory on a daily basis. Sometimes there are multiple zip files in the directory, this can happen because the ETL failed or somebody puts a new zip file in the directory manually. Because the ETL isn’t incremental only the most recent file needs to be loaded. To implement this I used the simple code below; it checks which file is the most recent and deletes all other files. • How many different servers are needed to keep a website running with no downtime? [closed]

  Machines go down. It's a fact of life. They may need to be rebooted for some reason, or they may have a hardware failure, or a power outage. So if I wanted to deploy a website with a server backed by a SQL database, putting the whole thing on one server wouldn't be good enough. It obviously needs at least two servers, so that if one goes down, the other can pick up the slack until the first comes back up. Of course, if I have the server software on two machines, either one of which could go down, I can't place the database on either of those two machines, because it could go down. So the database needs its own server. But that server can go down, so I need a backup database server and some sort of replication system to keep it in sync so the main can fail-over to it. So far, that's a bare minimum of 4 machines to keep one website running with a reasonable chance of no downtime. (Assuming no catastrophic events take place that take down both front-end servers at once or both DB servers at once, and no hacks, DDOS attacks, etc. Am I missing any other factors, or should I consider 4 servers to be the minimum for running a website with a goal of continuing operation without downtime even when a server goes down?

• Lighttpd proxy module - use with hostname

  I have to proxy a site which is hosted on an external webspace through my lighty on example.org. My config so far: $HTTP["url"] =~ "^/webmail" { proxy.server = ("/webmail/" => ( # this entry should link to example2.org ("host" => "1.2.3.4", "port" => 80) )) } The webspace provider has configured my domain as vhost. So if i access http://1.2.3.4/webmail/ lighttpd will only deliver the main site of the webspace provider which says "Site example.org was not found on our server." Any suggestions how i have to configure lighty to proxy sites that are only hosted as vhost (and do not have an ip on their own)?

  In my home network , i have dd-wrt router in another room , which bridges wifi from main home router (linksys) to the computers wired behind dd-wrt router. Now I cannot ssh from my laptop ( connected to linksys wifi) to the computers behind dd-wrt wifi bridge. I am able to ping the individual computers behind the dd-wrt bridge. When it comes to ssh or telnet to the computers , it is blocked. What can I do to make dd-wrt bridge to open up all ports in the dd-wrt bridge ?

• SQL Sharding and SQL Azure&hellip;

  Herve Roggero has just published a paper that outlines patterns for scaling using SQL Azure and the Blue Syntax (he and Scott Klein’s company) sharding api. The idea of being able to split (shard) database operations automatically and control them from a web based management console is very appealing. These ideas have been talked about for a long time and implemented in thousands of very custom ways that have been costly, complicated and fragile. Now, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Scaling database access will become easier and move into the mainstream of application development. The main cost is using an api whenever accessing the database. The api will direct the query to the correct database(s) which may be located locally or in the cloud. It is inevitable that the api will change in the future, perhaps incorporated into a Microsoft offering. Even if this is the case, your application has now been architected to utilize these patterns and details of the actual api will be less important. Herve does a great job of laying out the concepts which every developer and architect should be familiar with!

• GLSL compile error when accessing an array with compile-time constant index

  I have this shader that works well on my computer (using an ATI HD 5700). I have a loop iterating between two constant values, which is, afaik, acceptable in a glsl shader. I get the following errors (94 and 95 are the lines of the two affectations) when calling glLinkProgram: Vertex info ----------- 0(94) : error C5025: lvalue in assignment too complex 0(95) : error C5025: lvalue in assignment too complex I think my code is valid, I don't know if this comes from a compiler bug, a conversion of my shader to another format from the compiler (nvidia looks to convert it to CG), or if I just missed something. I already tried to remove the if (bPointLightUse[i]) statement and I still have the same error. However, if I just write this: vVertToLight[0] = ConvertToTangentSpace(ShPointLightData[0].Position - WorldPos.xyz); vVertToLightWS[0] = ShPointLightData[0].Position - WorldPos.xyz; vVertToLight[1] = ConvertToTangentSpace(ShPointLightData[1].Position - WorldPos.xyz); vVertToLightWS[1] = ShPointLightData[1].Position - WorldPos.xyz; Then I don't have the error anymore, but it's really unconvenient so I would prefer to keep something loop-based. • Laptop with Intel Graphics: external VGA monitor only gets signal on boot (no "hot plugging")

  I am able to get an external VGA monitor (or projector) to work if I start my laptop with it connected. However, if I start the laptop with it disconnected there is no signal on the external. The Displays screen shows the external, and thinks that it is active, but there is no signal being sent to it. This has been a persistent problem since 10.04 (I am now on 12.04.... each upgrade hoping something is improved). I should note that even when it works (starting with display connected), Displays still says the monitor is "unknown" (but it sends the signal). For the correct resolution to display, I have had to add a few xrandr lines for my monitor to my .xprofile file... otherwise resolution is limited to default 1024x768. So, resolution issues can be worked around, but the main issue is that the external doesn't get a signal without starting the machine with it connected. • What’s the password for my FileVault 2 boot volume?

  Apple’s support document for FileVault 2 (a.k.a. “full disk encryption” or “FDE”) has lots of information about enabling FDE and what it means for booting the machine. However, it doesn’t cover one very important thing I’m trying to do: mount the drive in the Recovery HD environment to reinstall OS X on it. The Recovery HD environment asks me for the volume passphrase so it can mount my drive and try to install OS X onto it. If this were an external drive which I’d manually enabled FDE on with diskutil, or an external Time Machine volume, I’d know it because it makes you pick one (just like a regular login password), but FileVault 2 never asked me for a volume passphrase (I assume it selects one behind the scenes). I’ve tried my main user’s password, but that doesn’t work, and neither does the recovery key set for the volume. Keychain Access doesn’t have anything that I could find. How do I unlock this volume?

• How to call Office365 web service in a Console application using WCF

In this post, I’d like to show you how to call the same web service in the cloud, aka Office365.In office365, it uses claims authentication as opposed to windows authentication for normal in-house SharePoint Deployment. For Details of the explanation you can see Wictor’s post on this here. The key to make it work is to understand when you authenticate from Office365, you get your authentication token. You then need to pass this token to your HTTP request as cookie to make the web service call. • Most efficient way to connect an ISAPI Dll to a windows service

  I am writing a custom server for a client. They want scalability so I must use a thread pool and probably I/O completion port to regulate it. The main requirement is that a windows service manage the HTTP requests for a number of reasons. An example of one would be that a client session spans many requests and continuity must be maintained. Another would be that the ISAPI Dll will be in the IIS address space and so it's code will be lean and very carefully implemented. The extensive processing in the Windows service may get unruly for the duration of the lengthy development. If the service crashes it will not take out IIS. Anyway, the remaining decision is how to have these two processes communicate. We have talked about pipes, tcp, global memory and even a single pipe with multiplexed data ala FastCGI. Would love to hear anyones experience with a decision like this.

• What happens when the USB key or SD card I've installed VMware ESXi on fails?

  An SD (SDHC) card installed in an HP ProLiant DL380p Gen8 server running VMware ESXi just failed. I encountered some rather ominous looking messages on the vCenter console and in the HP ProLiant ILO event log... Lost connectivity to the device ... backing the boot filesystem. As a result, host configuration changes will not be saved to persistent storage. Embedded Flash/SD-CARD: Error writing media 0, physical block 848880: Stack Exception. VMware advocates the use of USB and SD (SDHC) boot devices for ESXi. It was one of the main reasons the smaller footprint ESXi was developed (versus the older ESX). I've spent much time highlighting the differences between ESXi's installable and embedded modes to coworkers and clients. However, these failures do seem to happen. In this case, this is my third instance. Luckily, this is a vSphere cluster with SAN storage. What steps should be taken to remediate this failure?

• Redirect as a backup trick? w/o modifying DNS?

  I specifically looked up how to do something like this ( Can you set a backup ip for your server in DNS? ) and the answer basically was you can't. If i say specify 2 ip addresses could i somehow use a HTTP response header to ignore it temporary (say 5mins) and go to the other IP address? Or maybe i can play dead however i'm unsure how to play dead using nginx. I then would like to be available after my box notice the other box is down and be some kind of readonly server. I'm sure something like this has been implemented i am just wondering how i might implement it with 2 boxes. I'm sure it isn't very difficult? How might i redirect traffic from a backup box to my main server without modifying the DNS?

I've compiled this day-by-day guide to help anyone keep track of all the “Product Lifecycle Management and Product Value Chain” sessions and activities at OpenWorld 2012, September 30 – October 4 in San Francisco, California.  Monday, October 1 There are great networking activities on Sunday September 30, but PLM specific sessions start after general conference keynotes on Monday, October 1 at 10:45 a.m. at the InterContinental Hotel in room Telegraph Hill. Again in Telegraph Hill from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. we have an interesting session with leading semiconductor customer LSI and partner Kalypso on how LSI leveraged Agile PLM to advance from homegrown applications to complete Product Value Chain Management. That type of transition can be challenging, and LSI details how they were able to achieve their goals and the value they gained along the journey – a fascinating account for any company interested in leveraging best practices to innovate their business processes and even end products. • PXE boot FreeBSD iso from pxelinux server

  I'm using FOG as a TFTP / PXE server and would like to be able to boot a FreeBSD LiveCD (specifically pfSense, but it could be any LiveCD, really); I've found HOWTOs for booting a "netboot" BSD but they all seem to use a BSD server. So: Is it possible to PXE boot BSD from a Linux server? Is it possible to PXE boot a BSD LiveCD? Is it possible to PXE boot a Linux LiveCD? My main motivation is to be able to boot small LiveCD images (e.g. < 100MB) that I may only use once and don't want to burn a physical CD for.

• Redistribution of sqlpackage.exe [SSDT]

  This is a short note for anyone that may be interested in redistributing sqlpackage.exe. If this isn’t you then no need to keep reading. Ostensibly this is here for anyone that bingles for this information. sqlpackage.exe is a command-line that ships with SQL Server Development Tools (SSDT) in SQL Server 2012 and its main purpose (amongst other things) is to deploy .dacpac files from the command-line. Its quite conceivable that one might want to install only sqlpackage.exe rather than the full SSDT suite (for example on a production server) and I myself have recently had that need. I enquired to the SSDT product team about the possibility of doing this. I said: Back in VS DB Proj days it was possible to use VSDBCMD.exe on a machine that did not have the full VS shell install by shipping lots of pre-requisites along for the ride (details at How to: Prepare a Database for Deployment From a Command Prompt by Using VSDBCMD.EXE). Is there a similar mechanism for using VSDBMCD.exe’s replacement, sqlpackage.exe? here was the reply from Barclay Hill who heads up the development team: Yes, SQLPackage.exe is the analogy of VSDBCMD.exe. You can acquire separately, in a stand-alone package, by installing DACFX. You can get it from: Feature pack is here: http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=29065 Web Platform Installer here: http://www.microsoft.com/web/gallery/install.aspx?appid=DACFX You will notice it has dependencies on SQLDOM and SQLCLRTYPES.  WebPI will install these for you, but it is al carte on the feature pack.   Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/tmurphy/archive/2013/10/25/what-is-a-software-architectrsquos-job-today.aspx It was 2001 when a project manager first put my job title as architect on a statement of work.  A lot has changed over the last twelve years.  The concepts around what an architect is has evolved.  In the early days I would have said that they just rebranded the role of the system analyst.  Now we have a multitude of architect titles: application, solution, IT, data, enterprise.  Whatever the title the goals are the same.  An architect takes the business needs and maps them to the solutions that are needed and at the same time works to ensure the quality of the solution and its maintainability. One of the problems I see these days is that we are expecting every developer to have architect skills.  That in itself is not a problem.  This reduces the need for dedicated architects.  Not every developer though is going to be able to step up to this level.  Some are just good at solving small problems instead of thinking in the larger abstract. Another problem is the accelerating speed and breadth of new technologies and products.  For an architect to be good at his job he needs to spend large amounts of personal time studying just to stay relevant. In the end I don’t think the main objectives of an architect has changed, just the level of commitment needed to stay of value to your company.  Renew your commitment to your profession and keep delivering great solutions. • wamp php scan additional php.ini file

  In addition to the main php.ini file. I would like to scan a php.ini file located in the root directory of a website on localhost. Is this possible? I have just done a lot of reading about this, but I am still not grasping exactly how this is done, or if it is even possible. I can do this on my remote server and it works. So not really understanding why wamp won't search my root directory for a php.ini.

• Twitter status id conundrum

  I have an interest, a slightly perverse one some might say, in using online services and trying to figure out what the underlying (logical) data model is and in this day and age Twitter is one that lends itself very well to scrutiny. Consider this recent tweet of mine: The URL that enables you to see that tweet is http://twitter.com/jamiet/status/12154647354. We can interpret that URL to mean "a tweet by jamiet with an id of 12154647354" and hence we might further assume that the unique identifier for the tweet is {jamiet,12154647354}. However, its well-known that Twitter gives each status a unique ID regardless of who tweeted it so we might expect we could reach that tweet just by using a URL of http://twitter.com/status/12154647354 however (at the time of writing) that only redirects to Twitter's homepage. That seems strange to me especially given that we can use Twitter's API to access information about that tweet using only the id of the status. Witness http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.xml: [We can also access a JSON version of that information using http://api.twitter.com/1/statuses/show/12154647354.json] I'm puzzled as to why a tweet can't be accessed using on the main twitter website using the id alone.   i my company i had hosted a web page on live ip. external users can come to that page on server having IIS 7.. the problem is that on my page i placed three buttons one of internal exchange server , internal ftp server and internal Intranet. they are in internal network on different locations. i can come to main page but when i click the links the page not found error occurs. how can i reach all my internal servers that are running different services from internet through one page that can also authentication properly i am new please guide me step by step.
