• Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System Databases

  For a majority of software developers little time is spent understanding the inner workings of the database management systems (DBMS) they use to store data for their applications.  I personally place myself in this grouping. In my case, I have used various versions of Microsoft’s SQL Server (2000, 2005, and 2008 R2) and just recently learned how valuable they really are when I was preparing to deliver a lecture on "SQL Server 2008 R2, System Databases". Microsoft Sql Server 2008 R2 System DatabasesSo what are system databases in MS SQL Server, and why should I know them? Microsoft uses system databases to support the SQL Server DBMS, much like a developer uses config files or database tables to support an application. These system databases individually provide specific functionality that allows MS SQL Server to function. Name Database File Log File Master master.mdf mastlog.ldf Resource mssqlsystemresource.mdf mssqlsystemresource.ldf Model model.mdf modellog.ldf MSDB msdbdata.mdf msdblog.ldf Distribution distmdl.mdf distmdl.ldf TempDB tempdb.mdf templog.ldf Master DatabaseIf you have used MS SQL Server then you should recognize the Master database especially if you used the SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) to connect to a user created database. MS SQL Server requires the Master database in order for DBMS to start due to the information that it stores. Examples of data stored in the Master database User Logins Linked Servers Configuration information Information on User Databases Resource DatabaseHonestly, until recently I never knew this database even existed until I started to research SQL Server system databases. The reason for this is due largely to the fact that the resource database is hidden to users. In fact, the database files are stored within the Binn folder instead of the standard MS SQL Server database folder path. This database contains all system objects that can be accessed by all other databases.  In short, this database contains all system views and store procedures that appear in all other user databases regarding system information. One of the many benefits to storing system views and store procedures in a single hidden database is the fact it improves upgrading a SQL Server database; not to mention that maintenance is decreased since only one code base has to be mainlined for all of the system views and procedures. Model DatabaseThe Model database as the name implies is the model for all new databases created by users. This allows for predefining default database objects for all new databases within a MS SQL Server instance. For example, if every database created by a user needs to have an “Audit” table when it is  created then defining the “Audit” table in the model will guarantees that the table will be located in every new database create after the model is altered. MSDB DatabaseThe MSDBdatabase is used by SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Database Mail, SQL Server Service Broker, along with SQL Server. The SQL Server Agent uses this database to store job configurations and SQL job schedules along with SQL Alerts, and Operators. In addition, this database also stores all SQL job parameters along with each job’s execution history.  Finally, this database is also used to store database backup and maintenance plans as well as details pertaining to SQL Log shipping if it is being used. Distribution DatabaseThe Distribution database is only used during replication and stores meta data and history information pertaining to the act of replication data. Furthermore, when transactional replication is used this database also stores information regarding each transaction. It is important to note that replication is not turned on by default in MS SQL Server and that the distribution database is hidden from SSMS. Tempdb DatabaseThe Tempdb as the name implies is used to store temporary data and data objects. Examples of this include temp tables and temp store procedures. It is important to note that when using this database all data and data objects are cleared from this database when SQL Server restarts. This database is also used by SQL Server when it is performing some internal operations. Typically, SQL Server uses this database for the purpose of large sort and index operations. Finally, this database is used to store row versions if row versioning or snapsot isolation transactions are being used by SQL Server. Additionally, I would love to hear from others about their experiences using system databases, tables, and objects in a real world environments.

• FGLRX Drivers Keep Crashing | "Installation Media" reads Natty even though I'm in Precise

  I recently switched back to Ubuntu after a year or so of hardly touching my Ubuntu partition, and upgraded from Natty. Every time I start up, i get the "A problem has occurred..." popup, but it won't let me report it because Precise is not in beta. The details on the report show a segfault, and going through all the details, I notice that it lists Natty under "InstallationMedia" -- I just installed these drivers, so I'm really unsure why it's saying this. I wish I could copy this entire error report, but I see no way of doing that (is it stored somewhere in /var/log?). I'm new to the Unity interface (it's why I stopped using Ubuntu to begin with, but now that I'm getting used to it I'm liking it better). Thanks.

• Stop KDE services from running

  I recently installed KDE with the command sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop. Now whenever I log into Unity I can see KDE-related services running in the background and I see no obvious way to prevent them from opening at startup. I checked bum but I see nothing there. These are the services I see running right now: kde4 klauncher knotify4 These ones I can identify as being related to KDE given their names, but there could be more. How can I prevent these services from launching by themselves? I should mention I often use KDE applications such as kate, okular and kile. Could these be responsible for opening those services?

• Wifi USB interface being detected after some time

  I've got a wifi interface connected by USB (its chipset is the zd1211b, which I think it works with the zyd driver). When I log into my ubuntu 12.04 it don't detect the inteface but after waiting an indeterminate amount of time (sometimes a few minutes, sometimes half an hour or more) it is detected and it works fine. It's just to weird and also very annoying because you don't know when are you going to be able to use the wireless connection. Any solution to this? Can I force somehow the SO to detect the interface?

The membership is limited to users of an online chess site (freechess.org) and any member of that site can join this site as well. I was wondering, is it needed to put up a terms and conditions for my new website? If so, can I have a model of that? I searched and found some models but they are all for big sites that have e-commerce etc.

• rotate player based off of joystick

  Hey everyone I have this game that i am making in android and I have a touch screen joystick that moves the player around based on the joysticks position. I cant figure out how to also get the player to rotate at the same angle of the joystick. so when the joystick is to the left the players bitmap is rotated to the left as well. EDIT: I got the angle and am rotating the sprite around in the correct angle however it rotates on the wrong spot. • Conky dropping shadow when invoked at startup

  I read this thread but it doesn't really address my issue. The problem that I have is that whenever I log in, conky starts up, as set up in Startup Applications, but the instance it runs is dropping shadow and is above every other window, showing the wallpaper beneath it. This can be easily fixed by relaunching conky, but that defeats the purpose of having it start up at login. Also, running conky at any point manually after logging does not cause this. Any suggestions? I rewrote the script and played about with Compiz, but it still keeps happening.

• SQL Server Subscriber Migration

  We're currently have one way transaction replication from a SQL Server 2005 OLTP publisher/distrbituor to two subscribers (one SQL 2005 and the other SQL2008 R2). Replication security is via the SQL Agents' domain service account (the same account is used on all boxes). The SQL2008R2 subscriber is used for BI purposes and hosts a database that has a subset of the Production publisher database tables, with different security and indexes. We need to migrate this BI subscriber to a newer box with more performant hardware. The plan is as follows: Stop replicating to the BI box (continue replicating to the other subscriber). Backup all databases on the BI box (including system databases). Restore all databases (including master in single user mode) to the new BI box (this has SQL Server 2008R2 already installed). Take the old BI box off the network and shut it down. Rename and Re-IP the new BI box to be the same as the old box. Switch replication back on. Are there any flaws in this approach?

• ATI graphics card, with gnome shell, screen flickers

  After installing gnome shell, without any problem, after log in the fonts are missing and it looks like crap...nothing is readable. Don't want to make it a double post, because my issue is similar to the one from this question but for me the problems have not been solved properly. After running the commands from that post, and installing the latest AMD 11.10 driver, the Gnome shell display issues have been solved. But each time I move the mouse in the upper left corner, to bring up the applications...my entire screen flickers. Without the applications been displayed, everything looks fine. Hardware: ATI HD4870, Intel Q6600.

  I have a machine running a java app talking to a mysql instance running on the same instance. the app uses jdbc4 drivers from mysql. I keep getting com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException at random times. Here is the whole message. Could not open JDBC Connection for transaction; nested exception is com.mysql.jdbc.exceptions.jdbc4.CommunicationsException: The last packet successfully received from the server was25899 milliseconds ago.The last packet sent successfully to the server was 25899 milliseconds ago, which is longer than the server configured value of 'wait_timeout'. You should consider either expiring and/or testing connection validity before use in your application, increasing the server configured values for client timeouts, or using the Connector/J connection property 'autoReconnect=true' to avoid this problem. For mysql, the value of global 'wait_timeout' and 'interactive_timeout' is set to 3600 seconds and 'connect_timeout' is set to 60 secs. the wait timeout value is much higher than the 26 secs(25899 msecs). mentioned in the exception trace. • nouveu driver logs into unity-2d by default

  I have an old system with NVIDIA Corporation NV25 [GeForce4 Ti 4600]. When running Ubuntu , the nouveau driver loads fine but does not log into Unity with compiz. Instead it logs into Unity-2D. Any idea how to enable 3D/ compiz with the nouveau driver. OS: Ubuntu 12.04 Beta2 The nvidia driver is no more available for this graphics card, so have to rely on nouveau. UPDATE: Bug reported on launchpad . See here. There has been no reply as yet to this bug-report - does anyone have any idea how to resolve this? Further information, Also, if I use kubuntu desktop, kwin graphics works just fine. But, the users prefer Unity over KDE so I have uninstalled Kubuntu.

• Problem in booting Windows Vista after repairing using a boot repair disk

  Been using Vista and I recently installed Ubuntu 11 in a separate hard disk(in BIOS, this hard disk was set for the 'Boot from' option)..Apart from the partitions used for Ubuntu, there are 2 more partitions(NTFS) in that hard disk..Then I installed Windows 7 on one of those partitions (just to see which Windows operating system I'd like to keep on using, along with Ubuntu)..But after installing Windows 7, the OS selection menu didn't appear anymore and had to fix it using the Boot-Repair-Disk... It kinda worked.. Now the OS selection menu is displayed.. • Unable to start backuppc

  I had a ext4 drive today I replaced with a RAID drive, I moved all the files from the old HDD. After that I tried to start the Backuppc but I'm getting the following error: Can't create a test hardlink between a file in /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/pc and /media/WESYS_RAID/backups/nbackuppc/cpool. Either these are different file systems, or this file system doesn't support hardlinks, or these directories don't exist, or there is a permissions problem, or the file system is out of inodes or full. Use df, df -i, and ls -ld to check each of these possibilities. Quitting... • messed up PATH and can't login

  I was screwing around and trying to add some environment variables to my path. I must have made a type or something because once I logged out, I could not lob back in. I know I'm not on caps lock or anything and in fact if I type the wrong password I am informed of this. However, when I type the correct password the desktop starts to load and then loops back to the login prompt. There also no other users on the machine for me to log in as other than guest which does not have the right permissions for me to fix things. Any ideas on where to go from here?

• Phantom activity on MySQL

  This is probably just my total lack of MySQL expertise, but is it typical to see lots of phantom activity on a MySQL instance via phpMyAdmin? I have a shared hosting plan through Lithium, and when I log in through the phpMyAdmin console and click on the 'Status' tab, it's showing crazy high numbers for queries. Within an hour of activating my account I had 1 million queries. At first I thought this was them setting things up, but the number is climbing constantly, averaging 170/second. I've got a support ticket in with Lithium, but I thought I'd ask here if this were a MySQL/shared host thing, because I had the same thing happen with a shared hosting plan through Joyent.

• Why Wikipedia doesn't appear as a referral in Google Analytics' Traffic sources?

  One of my clients has a website and got not spammy backlinks in a Wikipedia article. When I test it for SEO purposes with Google Analytics (from different IPs), apparently there is no referral information. On the Real-Time view my test visit is visible but with There is no data for this view in the referrals subview. And this visits appear as (direct) / (none) on the Traffic sources view. Wikipedia is not hiding in any way its links origin, since it is shown in the server visits log. Is Google ignoring Wikipedia as a referral? Am I missing anything else? Update: Now it works, several days after the link was active. Maybe something is detecting for how long the link was there so that it doesn't work just from the beggining, as a security measure? Many visits are actually not recorded.

• Xfce Power Manager on Xubuntu 13.10 doesn't work

  The problem is that its actually works, but something works with Xfce Power Manager at the same time. For example, I set that if I pressed Suspend button (on my Lenovo B560 its Fn+F2 hotkey) then system ask me what to do. But when Log out window appears, system goes to suspend. Another example is closing the lid. I set it to lock the screen via Xfce Power Manager, but system still goes to suspend. I thought that it might be laptop-mode-tools, but it's not installed. Before 13.10 I had 13.04 and everything were fine.

• Asterisk not playing custom sounds on Ubuntu Server 11.04

  I've installed Asterisk on my Ubuntu Server, all works fine, excepts playing the custom sounds. Asterisk sounds work, but this file I've uploaded does not play (on other servers it works, it is a .WAV PCM 16bit 8000). • VNC Server not responsive after a few days

  I am new to Ubuntu (11.10) - I installed Ubuntu on a box which has no screen and no keyboard. I connect to that box via tightvncserver. The box is mostly used as a file and media server (i.e. samba + XBMC). So far so good. I can connect via VNC to the box and take control of it. But after a few days, when trying to connect via VNC, I don't get a response. The media server is still on, ping is fine, but VNC is down. The only solution I have found is to plug a screen and keyboard and reboot. I am not sure how to diagnose the problem (maybe some log files?) or if this is just a configuration issue. Any help appreciated.

MS SQL Server requires the Master database in order for DBMS to start due to the information that it stores. Examples of data stored in the Master database User Logins Linked Servers Configuration information Information on User Databases Resource DatabaseHonestly, until recently I never knew this database even existed until I started to research SQL Server system databases. The reason for this is due largely to the fact that the resource database is hidden to users. In fact, the database files are stored within the Binn folder instead of the standard MS SQL Server database folder path. This database contains all system objects that can be accessed by all other databases.  In short, this database contains all system views and store procedures that appear in all other user databases regarding system information. One of the many benefits to storing system views and store procedures in a single hidden database is the fact it improves upgrading a SQL Server database; not to mention that maintenance is decreased since only one code base has to be mainlined for all of the system views and procedures. Model DatabaseThe Model database as the name implies is the model for all new databases created by users. This allows for predefining default database objects for all new databases within a MS SQL Server instance. For example, if every database created by a user needs to have an “Audit” table when it is  created then defining the “Audit” table in the model will guarantees that the table will be located in every new database create after the model is altered. MSDB DatabaseThe MSDBdatabase is used by SQL Server Agent, SQL Server Database Mail, SQL Server Service Broker, along with SQL Server. The SQL Server Agent uses this database to store job configurations and SQL job schedules along with SQL Alerts, and Operators. In addition, this database also stores all SQL job parameters along with each job’s execution history.  Finally, this database is also used to store database backup and maintenance plans as well as details pertaining to SQL Log shipping if it is being used. Distribution DatabaseThe Distribution database is only used during replication and stores meta data and history information pertaining to the act of replication data. Furthermore, when transactional replication is used this database also stores information regarding each transaction. It is important to note that replication is not turned on by default in MS SQL Server and that the distribution database is hidden from SSMS. Tempdb DatabaseThe Tempdb as the name implies is used to store temporary data and data objects. Examples of this include temp tables and temp store procedures. It is important to note that when using this database all data and data objects are cleared from this database when SQL Server restarts. This database is also used by SQL Server when it is performing some internal operations. Typically, SQL Server uses this database for the purpose of large sort and index operations. Finally, this database is used to store row versions if row versioning or snapsot isolation transactions are being used by SQL Server. Additionally, I would love to hear from others about their experiences using system databases, tables, and objects in a real world environments.

• Cannot start ubuntu-desktop

  I am mainly a Windows technician and am trying to install ubuntu server. Everything worked fine and I can log in using the shell but when I installed ubuntu-desktop it just refuses to start? I did try startx and I get the message "server already running" I tried "start gdm" (what is this supposed to do?) and it comes back with "Job is already running: gdm" I know that the server version is not really for ubuntu-desktop but all our other servers are like that and I want it, is there any help out there? Ps. the server is running on a VM install that my IT department made for me and I connect to the machine shell using "Tera Ter Web 3.1" Thank you Jack

• Network Manager troubleshooting

  I'm having some issues when connecting to my house's wifi from my Ubuntu 10.10 laptop. If the connection doesn't exists, when selecting the network (and after entering the WPA2 password) I'm able to connect. Once the connection is saved, when trying to reconnect, Network Manager works for a minute or so and then fails; the only way to reconnect then is to delete the saved connection and re-select the network from the list of available wireless networks. The same network works with no issues on the same laptop when running Win7, and on other wireless networks when running Ubuntu. Is there a Network Manager log which I can take a look at for troubleshooting the issue? Are there any tools for checking the wifi status?
